  • Beyond the traditional D.C. attractions – the Smithsonian museums, the U.S. Capitol, the monuments – you'll find fresh food, arts and nightlife scenes. You can spend your morning perusing the city's cache of farmers markets and contemporary exhibits and your afternoon taking in the scenery from the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument before catching a show at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Many of the best things to do in D.C. are free. Whether you are looking for some family fun, historical sights, an excursion out on the town, or a quiet day to yourself, Washington is a loaded with a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities that don't cost a dime. The National Mall is the first stop on most sightseeing tours of Washington, and most of the attractions are free. With dozens of museums and historic sites, there are plenty of things to see and do to keep the whole family occupied. This part of the nation's capital is home to national monuments and memorials and world-class museums like the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art, the National Air & Space Museum, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Take your time and remember you can't see it all in one day. The National Zoo is set within the beautiful Rock Creek Park and is a part of the Smithsonian Institution. Admission is free. The attraction, one of the most kid-friendly places to visit in the nation’s capital, has more than 400 different species of animals, including the famed pandas. Washington's premier concert hall offers a free performance every evening at 6 p.m. Programs include performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, jazz musicians, poets, and dance troupes, among others. The Kennedy Center also hosts a variety of seasonal festivals and provides free guided tours of the venue. Guided tours of the U.S. Capitol building are free, but they require tickets, which are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. While waiting for a tour, you can browse galleries at the Capitol Visitor Center that display historic artifacts, touch a 10-foot model of the Capitol Dome, and watch live video feeds from the House and Senate. More than 330,000 American servicemen, as well as many famous Americans, are buried at the 624-acre Arlington National Cemetery. Visitors can walk the grounds for free or take a guided bus tour. Be sure to see the Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns and visit Arlington House, the former home of Robert E. Lee, which is atop a hill. It provides one of the best views of Washington. Learn about the history of Washington's neighborhoods by following one of Cultural Tourism D.C.'s walking trails. The illustrated signs combine stories, historical photos, and maps. Explore a variety of communities, including Adams Morgan, U Street, and Barracks Row and themed trails like the Civil War to Civil Rights Downtown Heritage Trail.

RSW has a network of airside pavement infrastructure (taxiways and aircraft parking aprons) that has been constructed at various times from as early as 1979 (during the original RSW construction) through 2005 (as part of the Midfield Terminal construction). Maintaining these pavement areas is critical to the safe continued operation of aircraft at RSW. This project will evaluate all pavement and recommend rehabilitation measures to correct existing pavement distresses and extend the useful life of airport infrastructure.

The increase in passenger volume within limited corridor spaces during peak hour operations has negatively impacted the terminal’s functionality. There are conflicting passenger flow patterns, insufficient space to provide additional screening for passengers within the limits of the security screening checkpoint areas, insufficient length of queuing, and the building systems are challenged to support peak hour passenger volume. The Lee County Port Authority is also seeking to increase concession amenities for the general public.
