October 2018

¾ On Oct. 24, the Lee County Port Authority conducted its tri-annual Mass Casualty Incident training exercise, which is required by the Federal Aviation Administration to comply with our FAR Part 139 certification. This vital exercise demonstrates Southwest Florida International Airport’s ability to respond to and mitigate an emergency, practice established procedures and identify equipment, personnel, resources and support needs. More than 350 people from 30 regional agencies and organizations participated in this comprehensive emergency training exercise.

¾ Officer James Ross (K-9 Savannah), Sergeant Eric Burton (K-9 Bo) and Officer John Heald (K-9 Beyer) from the Airport Police Department all scored 100 percent on their canine re-certifications. ¾ On Dec. 19, Santa Claus (aka Capt. Gardner Blizzard) arrived at the Joseph H. Messina Center with an escort from the Airport Police Department to give the children a gift and an opportunity to take a picture with Santa. In addition, APD was successful in their fundraising efforts throughout the force and other LCPA contributors to be able to purchase a Buddy Bench for the center, which is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground. Thank you to the entire Airport Police Department for being so generous and having a positive influence on the children at the Messina Center.

¾ Mark Twombly was selected as the 2018 Aviation Ambassador of the Year. This award recognizes an outstanding individual involved at Page Field who has a strong background in aviation, advocates aviation awareness and has made a positive impact on aviation in our community. Twombly has been a supporter of Page Field for decades and has a long history as an aviation writer for Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association and other industry publications.

¾ The Sounds of the Season music program was a huge success in 2018 with 28 schools and 30 performances. More than 1,300 Lee County School students entertained passengers, employees and meeters and greeters at RSW during the holiday season!

¾ In December, a new art exhibit was installed at RSW in coordination with the Alliance for the Arts. Entitled “My Florida,” local artists were invited to express what living in Florida means to them. The 30 canvas paintings will be on display in the hallways leading to Concourses B and D through June 2019.
