Our Mission Statement

Lee County Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to enhance the quality of life in Lee County by providing a broad variety of accessible leisure, recreation, cultural activities and services.

Fr

om the Director 2008 was a very good and very busy year for Parks & Recreation. There were many accomplishments during the year. Tramway Road Park was finally completed after several years of planning and two phases of construction. In addition to four lighted baseball/softball fields, there is a soccer field, concession/restroom building, playground, trails, pond, shelter, and parking for about 100 cars at this facility.

Many are to be commended for their contributions to make this project happen. Two grants were received from the NC Parks & Recreation Trust Fund totaling $750,000 for this project. Sanford Contractors donated over $80,000 of work in order for Phase I to proceed. The Sanford Area Home Builders Association donated and built the 1600 square foot concession/restroom building. The three local Rotary Clubs donated over $17,000 to get the shelter by the pond constructed. The Southern Lee Booster Club along with a memorial gift from the family of Joshua Mann constructed two of the batting cages. A dedication for this wonderful facility is planned for the spring of 2009. Hopefully, you will be able to attend. Our gymnastics program moved this year to a new building on Commercial Court in Moore Business Park. The new facility is only a little bigger than the old one. The great news however is this facility has air conditioning. Summer programs were much more enjoyable for students this summer but especially so for our instructors. We are hopeful that the new venue along with Olympic coverage will encourage more participants in this great program. The old bridge spanning the creek at Buchanan Park was replaced. The new bridge is a 37’ span created from an aluminum loading ramp from a decommissioned military transport plane that parks & recreation purchased from federal surplus. A great team from Sanford Contractors and Hall Fencing refurbished the bridge, added safety railing, and made the installation. Go by Buchanan Park and check out this great addition. We had several volunteer groups to provide valuable service during the year. A team of Boy Scouts and their sponsors replaced the planters and fencing in the lower parking area at San-Lee Park. Another group of Boy Scouts built a rugged bulletin board for the Tent Campground Area at San-Lee Park. A group of Cub Scouts picked up two small dump truck loads of limbs and pine cones around the Gazebo area of Kiwanis Family Park. Corporate volunteers also lent a hand. A team of volunteers from Wyeth constructed a 64’ boardwalk along an often muddy section of the Leopold Lake Trail at San-Lee Park. San-Lee Park staff did the planning and pre-cut the materials for the boardwalk. The team from Wyeth leveled the path and installed the boardwalk. Another volunteer team from Wyeth cleaned up the area around the Gazebo and helped spread rock screening materials to improve footing along the Strolling Garden Trail at Kiwanis Family Park. We are grateful for all these good things that happened during 2008. We hope that you will get involved with parks & recreation in 2009 if you are not already.

Youth Flag, Pee-Wee & Midget Football

The Lee County Parks and Recreation Youth Football program is designed to provide learning and growing experience for participants while they have fun. It stresses participation, sportsmanship, and skill development. Participants must be present at the time of registration to be weighed. New players are required to bring a copy of their birth certificate to registration. A skill review session will be held for new players in each league. Each player should wear comfortable clothing and shoes to perform skills such as passing, catching and running. Complete football uniform is provided except shoes. Parents/guardians are required to sign a contract of responsibility for participant’s football equipment.

For a child just starting out in sports, this program is instructional and teaches the basic fundamentals of baseball. Emphasis is placed on fun, participation, sportsmanship and skill development. Practices will begin in early December and games begin in January. Co-ed teams begin practicing after Christmas and games will begin in February. 2-Ball Competition

A 2-player team plays this unique basketball skills game. Each team has one minute to score as many baskets as possible from any of the designated shooting spots identified on a half court.

Triple Threat Basketball Camp

This program is a fast-paced weeklong afternoon camp, which focuses on individual offensive skills instruction and is complemented by team play, competition and a world-class level of fun! The camp is designed to ignite and propel a player on his/her own journey to successfully reach their goals in the game and in life!

The objective of the Youth Volleyball league is to provide enjoyment and instruction in the game. Good sportsmanship and participation are stressed. This program provides a wonderful opportunity for beginners and advanced volleyball players. New players are required to bring a copy of their birth certificate to registration. A skills review session (try-outs) will be held for all new players in each league. Participants should dress in athletic clothing and tennis shoes so that they may perform skills such as passing , setting, and serving. Team shirts will be provided before games begin. School players are encouraged to register.

The adult softball league is designed to enhance physical and mental well being and promote community involvement. Participation in the adult softball league is a great way to meet new people and build relationships.

The adult fall softball program is specifically designed for those adults who cannot get enough softball. The league is open to anyone over the age of 18 that is interested in having fun, meeting people and enjoying the game of softball. TINY TOTS PRESCHOOL

Tiny Tots is a preparatory program that promotes social and recreational interaction between children ages 3-5 years old. Your child will learn to listen, recall, follow directions, practice newly acquired skills and solve problems. Age appropriate activities will be offered in academics, language development and large and small muscle development. Please be sure that your child is toilet trained before enrolling them into the program.

Children’s Dance

The Children’s Dance program is designed to offer a supervised and structured recreational environment that promotes diversity through several types of dance. This program offers instruction in ballet and tap. Weekly one-hour classes are offered.

A recital is held at the end of the year in May or early June.

Dance Workshops In the Dance Workshop students will learn to use upbeat music and sharp movements as well as turns, leaps, jumps and develop balance and flexibility. In the Adult Dance Workshops participants will learn the fundamental techniques of ballet while tightening and toning their body.

Happy Day Camp

Happy Day Camp is designed to involve individuals with special needs in recreational activities. One-week sessions are held for different age groups. During camp participants have the opportunity to interact with their peers through activities such as arts and crafts, nature studies, boating, swimming and special field trips.

Senior Games and Silver Arts of Lee County

This program gives senior adults 55 and older the opportunity to interact on a recreational and social level. The participants have the chance to compete in “Olympic” type sporting events as well as heritage, visual and literary art events. Senior games begin and end with spectacular ceremonies to introduce the games and reward the participant’s for their efforts. After winning locally, participants are given the opportunity to compete statewide.

Pool Information

O.T. Sloan Pool

O.T. Sloan Pool is located at 1420 Bragg Street. The pool is open to the public from 1-5 pm Tuesday-Sunday beginning Memorial Day weekend. The pool will be open weekends only while schools are in session. Pool will close on Labor Day. The fee for public swim is $3 per person.

O. T. Sloan Pool is available to rent on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 6-10 pm June - August. For more information on pool fees, rules and available dates call 775-2107 ext. 201.

Swim Lessons Swim lessons are taught at O.T. Sloan Pool. Classes are held Monday-Thursday; Friday is a make up date in case of rain. Morning and evening classes are approximately 45 minutes in length, for each level offered. Students will be taught the appropriate skills for each level. All instructors are certified through Lee County American Red Cross. Class size is limited and enrollment will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Call 775-2107 ext. 207 if you have any questions.

See your wild neighbors up close and learn more about them. The Nature Center houses live native, non-releasable wildlife in the forms of mammals, reptiles, fish, and birds of prey.

The Wildlife Rescue Center

The Wildlife Rescue Center is a non-profit organization made up of dedicated volunteers who take in, rehabilitate, and release back to the wild injured or orphaned wildlife. If you are interested in volunteering with this organization you can contact the park at 776-6221 for information on how to do so. If you find an injured or orphaned wild animal you can go to www.ncwildlife.org, coexisting with wildlife, locate a rehabilitator. You can also call the park for a local rehabilitator. Please do not drop animals off at park. Please note that it is illegal to keep in your care any wildlife without the proper permit from the state government (and sometimes the federal government). The park can help those individuals who are serious about obtaining these permits.

Scout Projects

Over the years, Boy & Girl Scout projects have provided San-Lee Park with many needed improvements. A new bridge for the meadow, amphitheater, and trails are examples of scout projects. Program Dates: Year Round Fees: Cost of building materials for projects is covered through donations and
