Hi Everybody,

Welcome to yet another jam-packed issue of Enlightening Times where we have lots of positive, uplifting news to report in what has been a very fragile start to 2017 around the world.

Firstly, we kicked off the year with the launch of the largest ROBUS Catalogue at our Annual Sales & Marketing Conference in Dublin City, a truly magnificent event where our global teams come together in one room- they really are a force to be reckoned with!

LED Group are proud partners of the newly formed LEDLUM consortium spear headed by our very own Pat Kelly, RD&I Director who will go into more detail about this exciting project. We also have lots of other exciting partnerships and sponsorships to tell you about in this edition including our Engineers Ireland Registration whereby LED Group is now a CPD Registered Training Provider.

Hopefully by now you have information about our latest product launch – the new STREEX street light as featured on the front cover. This is our first Street Lighting range and is the result of much research and development by our NPD team over the past few months. There are more exciting project fittings on the way.

I had the pleasure of meeting Marcus Child again in May as we invited him to be guest speaker at our Head Quarters in Dublin. Speak to any of the staff here and they will tell you that they never come away from a session with Marcus feeling anything other than energised and inspired. If we could bottle his enthusiasm… we wouldn’t need ROBUS to light up the world!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all staff who have progressed internally within the LED Group, it’s clear to see that management are demonstrating ‘Succession Planning’ throughout the business worldwide. As you read on, you will learn more about who has been promoted along with a lot of new faces too… in fact we are still hiring for more positions in the UK and Ireland so if you know anyone who wants to work with a Deloitte Best Managed Company, please do get in touch.

The LED Group Management team continue to participate in a “Good to Great” programme with Brian McGeough, which is proving extremely successful in nurturing their leadership and communication skills. Every day I witness its significance shining through in all departments and am very proud of everyone’s commitment towards this programme.

The ROBUS New Product Development Team have launched over 20 new product ranges since the start of 2017, with plenty more exciting projects in development.

Some of the highlights include the SPACE UGR<19 LED panel range which fully complies with EN12464 for offices, classrooms or similar areas, the TRIPLEX Fire Rated LED Downlight which enables installers to choose from 1 of 3 colour temperatures before installation, and the new Emergency Pack (R3EMPK-PSU) that is plug and play with our LED Panel and ETERNITY downlight ranges.

2016 saw the Irish Sales Team deliver record breaking numbers that surpassed all previous numbers registered in the history of the business! Since the start of 2017 the Irish Sales team have continued to produce great results. We are all looking forward to exciting times ahead!

Early this year we announced an exclusive partnership with SLV – this brings many opportunities to our stockists and project sales, where we can now fulfil a very broad range requirement. Successful already, we welcome an upward trend in sales of SLV product. The sales team spent 2 days in SLV in February, touring the head office and factory – a most impressive facility in Dusseldorf.

Sean Slein has been appointed to Area Sales Manager

With Sharon moving, this has created an opening for a new graduate ASM position which has been filled by Sean Slein who has just finished a Bachelor of Business Studies from the National College of Ireland. Since a young age, Sean has worked in several departments at the LED Group, including Internal Sales, Warehouse and NPD. Sean has also previously worked in online sales, and is looking forward to bringing his experience to the role.

Emma Ryan is currently on maternity leave and her area is in the very capable hands of Katie Slein. Recently Katie has worked with electrical wholesalers conducting energy audits for the end user – her relationship with local electrical contractors has proven very beneficial in pulling through project orders.

MARKETING UPDATE

During the first week in January 2017 the LED Group first ever offsite day and evening conference was held in the Alexander Hotel, Dublin.

With 150 attendees from around the globe, the day was a resounding success with powerful presentations from Mick Slein, John Humphery and Global Sales & Marketing personnel.

The Marketing Team started work on the conference several months prior, with Adam literally working through the night on content and Denise putting her superb event management skills into play.

Launching the 2017 catalogue at the conference was the culmination of work across NPD, RD&I, QC and Marketing for the previous 4 months. The 2017 catalogue, packed with over 1,000 products is our largest to date; containing over 60 new products and featuring case study photography from Dublin to Darwin and everywhere in between!

To support the catalogue we have also recently distributed new and updated versions of the very popular Modular Display Boards as well as new Linear Fitting Display units. The RAMADA counter displays have also been dispatched to support the massive interest across various markets and customer groups.

We had two new starts on the team (well one new and one transfer).

Gemma O’Hagan was previously self-employed and hails from Antrim. We are delighted to have Gemma’s creative experience on the team and she has already made her mark with CounterPoint by ROBUS, the monthly New Product Newsletter and is working on something very exciting launching in Q3!

Hazel Breen transferred from the National Lighting team – Hazel is still managing marketing activity for National Lighting and is also now working on ROBUS Social Media, producing a dramatic increase in followers to date. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, LinkedIN and Twitter!

Megan Muir in Brisbane has also taken on responsibility for Social Media (Facebook and LinkedIN) in Australia and is enjoying this new role.

The Marketing Team have also enjoyed focusing on some of the ‘Good to Great’ work (a personal and cultural development programme being run across the business) – in particular ‘the NEED right NOW’. If you don’t know what that’s all about, ask them, I’m sure they would love to share!

Phew! So what are we working on now – if we told you that we might just have to kill you!!

Phil Hunt has been promoted to UK Sales Director.

Phil has been with the business for 14 years and has progressed from Area Sales Manager to Regional Manager and Regional Director and has excelled in every role he has undertaken.

From 2011 – 2016 he ran both the UK Western and Irish regions, delivering fantastic results in both regions and winning Regional Director of the year four times. Phil brings his customary sales focus, tenacity, hard work and strategic and tactical nous to the new role.

Chris Roberts has been promoted to Western Region Sales Manager.

Chris has worked within the business for 9 years and has progressed from Graduate Sales Representative within the National Accounts team to Area Sales Manager in the Western Region.

Ian Lawrie has been appointed to Western Region Area Sales Manager.

Ian joins us from MK, where he has worked for over 8 years. Before that Ian worked at Schneider after making the jump from the wholesale world. Ian is enjoying his new role as he continues to build the ROBUS brand across the South West.

The UK sales team hit the ground running on January 6th at the annual Sales & Marketing Conference in Dublin.By week two the team were conducting 2017 catalogue launch meetings with customers. This included 20 new product ranges and 67 products in total. Particularly well received was the tilt version of our most popular TRIUMPH ACTIVATE downlight range.

At the sales conference we also announced key personnel changes across the team:

John Humphery has been appointed to UK & European Managing Director.

In his new position, John will draw on his extensive sales and marketing experience to bring fresh energy and a harmonised approach to our European business.

With an HND in Business & Finance, John first joined the LED Group in 2006 as a Regional Sales Manager, where he demonstrated strong leadership skills and delivered record sales results year on year.

He was promoted to UK and Ireland Sales & Marketing Director in 2012, where his broad knowledge of the business, market place and his previous track record in Marketing stood him in great stead to drive the business to further success. John joined the main Board of Directors in 2014 and has successfully directed his teams across the UK and Ireland over the last 5 years with a real ‘can do attitude’ culminating in a record year in 2016 for the division.

In the first quarter of 2017 the Australian team have created over 20% growth in revenue. We launched a new catalogue and to date have conducted 5 National Promotions.

The new warehousing facilities in Sydney and Perth, operating alongside the Brisbane HQ has generated impressive efficiencies around order processing and deliveries.

The Business Support Team in Brisbane go from strength to strength and there have been several additions to the expanding sales team:

• Nick Swift (formerly State Manager of WA) moved to Melbourne to oversee Victoria and Tasmania as State Manager. Nick recruited Gerrit Booysen from South Africa, to look after Western Victoria and the customer accounts based on the Island of Tasmania. Nick also appointed Declan Street who looks after the Eastern Victorian region. More recently, Nick appointed Katy Groves, who will be looking after some key accounts within the Victorian region

• Craig Filer State Manager oversees South Australia and the Northern Territory with the assistance of Martin Ailmore

• Ryan Muir joined the LED Group last October bringing with him 8 years sales management in building supplies. Ryan is based in Perth and took over Nick’s role as State Manager, to oversee Western Australia. Ryan appointed Kyle Van der Heever to manage our customers in parts of greater WA

• Neil Jones State Manager Queensland, has also expanded his team appointing Wade Clarke to look after the far Northern QLD. Neil appointed Gordon Matthews to manage our relationships with our customers based in the South of Queensland and Cathy Lockerbie looks after the Sunshine Coast and Central Queensland

• Olly Slack joined the NSW and ACT team and manages customers based in-and-between Sydney and Dubbo. Matt Vukovich manages Northern NSW, as well as Jackson Teo who will be managing our customer accounts based in ACT and Southern NSW

As you can tell, there has been a lot of new blood and fresh eyes added across the business and thankfully we are reaping the rewards of investing and moving into a strong second half of the year.

CPD Registered Training Provider – Engineers Ireland

LED Group has successfully registered with Engineers Ireland as a CPD Training Provider with one course approved and another two courses pending. This will help to further elevate the ROBUS brand into the specification market.

Lighting Association Ireland

LED Group is contributing well as a founding member of the Lighting Association Ireland, which is beginning to establish itself as Ireland’s premier lighting committee.

Product Approvals

LED Group continues to invest significantly to the LIA’s Verified Scheme to quality product performance – TRIUMPH ACTIVATE and EAGLE are expected through the approval process soon.

LED Group is also preparing to join in the kick-off of the new EU Market Surveillance Safety Scheme to be run by the LIA.

Technical Dept is working to ensure that there is a strong selection of ROBUS commercial lighting products on the ETCL after the new efficacy limits come into effect later this year.

The list of ROBUS products approved on the SEAI EEE Eligibility List continues to grow steadily in Ireland.

SPACE, DISK and MORPH have all recently been approved by IPART in Australia.

We welcome two new engineers to LED Group’s Dublin RD&I Team.

Conor Moran joined the LED Group RD&I team in November 2016, as Mechanical (Value) Engineer based in Dublin HQ, reporting to Niall Moran.

Michael ‘Chet’ Kelly, joined the LED Group RD&I team in mid-March 2017, as Electronics/Controls Engineer based in Dublin HQ, reporting to Pat Kelly.

LEDLUM, a European cooperative research project, has officially started on November 1st, 2016 and is planned for a duration of 36 months. By developing the world’s smallest Light Engine, LEDLUM targets to establish Europe as the world leading innovator in Solid-State-Lighting solutions. The project receives funding from the European Union´s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement n° 731466.

The LEDLUM project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 731466. This project is an initiative of the Photonics Public Private Partnership, of which LED Group is also a member.

LEDLUM: “Tiny Light Engine for Large Scale LED Lighting” is addressing the task of reducing the size and cost of the conventional LED driver, while also improving its performance and reliability. Targets are:

• size and weight reduction by 90%

• material costs reduction by 50%

• energy losses reduction by 45%

• expected lifetime increases from 5 to 10 years

LEDLUM develops a highly integrated cost competitive light engine technology platform for Solid State Lighting (SSL) connected directly to the electrical power grid.

LEDLUM is committed to make a major innovation step in overall solid-state lighting engines by reduction of size, material costs, energy losses and an increasing lifetime. The methods include integrated magnetics, deep-trench silicon level capacitor design, integrated circuit level power electronics and mechanical design for optics and end customer ready demonstrators.

LEDLUM for the first time proposes to develop an integrated system level solution for realising a highly miniaturised, efficient light engine.

LEDLUM – LED Group participates in a Horizon 2020 EU funded research and development project for the first time

LEDLUM covers the whole supply chain starting from passive and semiconductor components of power electronics systems, light engines to complete luminaires. Thereby a European eco-system that supports highly optimised LED systems is established.

LEDLUM with its disruptive technological approach will therefore strengthen the market position in the field of LED drivers and LED based luminaires for the next decade.

The LEDLUM consortium consists of 7 partners from 4 different countries (Austria, Denmark, France and Ireland) who will support the project success with their know-how and expertise.

Cathy lives in the heart of the Sunshine coast with her teenage son and daughter. She has a keen interest in Archery and Sailing, spending much of her spare time out on the ocean in the Whitsundays.

Olly is originally from London and joined the ROBUS team last September when he moved to Sydney, Australia. Olly’s previous experience in sales and the electrical industry, alongside his approachability and customer service skills make him a strong member of the ROBUS team. Outside of work, Olly enjoys kickboxing and music.

Megan Muir has been appointed to the role of Office Administrator & Sales Support, Megan joined the team last August. Megan has a passion for all things outdoors and enjoys hiking, camping, trail running and getting out on her stand up paddle board.

Tania lives in Brisbane with her husband and two children, Jennifer and Jai. She is heavily involved in the sport of drill-dance and is the current president of her club. Her Masters team recently placed 5th at the Australian National Titles in Sydney.

Matt was born in Port Macquarie and now lives in Newcastle where he completed his Bachelor of Business. Matt joined the ROBUS team last December and is building strong relationships with his customers. Matt is passionate about surfing, golf, tennis and photography. He also enjoys AFL and NRL.

FUNDRAISERS

LED Group Ladies would like to thank everyone who donated money, baked & bought at the cake sale and came out to support them on the day. A massive €2,000 was raised for ARC Cancer Support Centres who are very grateful for the funds raised by LED Group.

The streets of Dublin were thronged with over 33,000 women who came out to brave the elements from sunshine to showers and cross the finish line on Monday 5th June, in the largest female-only event of its kind in the world - the 3th Annual VHI Women’s Mini Marathon.

The ladies at LED Group took part to fundraise for ARC Cancer Support Centres - an Irish charity dedicated to supporting people diagnosed with cancer, their family members, friends and carers, through their drop-in centres, complementary therapy and counselling services. All their services are free of charge so they really do depend on the generosity of the public.

Key of Hope – ROBUS Soccer Team in South Africa

Key of Hope is a non-profit organization reaching out to children living in the greatest poverty and AIDS stricken area in the world, Durban, South Africa.

ROBUS are proud to sponsor football shirts for the “Cross Training” sports program which includes boys’ soccer teams and girls’ netball teams where the children compete in monthly tournaments after school.

Neil O’Briain Golfer

Neil grew up playing the game on Ireland’s second oldest course, Royal Dublin. Since turning pro, Neil has played in a number of European, Challenge and EuroPro Tour events.

With three Irish PGA victories and 11 victories in total across the country, 2016 was undoubtedly the most successful year to date in Neil’s career and has opened up some exciting event starts for the 2017 season.

LED Group staff enjoyed the summer sun after work on Thursday 25th May in Dublin’s Phoenix Park as they joined 5,000 other staff members from companies all over Dublin in a 25k Relay.

The 5 x 5km fun relay event is in its seventh year and invites staff members from organisations all around the Dublin area to participate. LED Group put forward 3 teams this year to enjoy some fun, fitness and teamwork among office friends and colleagues- with lots of banter and competitiveness along the way!

The vision of the Staff Relay Series is to provide a unique and special opportunity to build team spirit and create a sense of healthy competition within the workplace and to bring a sense of fun to a running event.

World Down Syndrome Day took place on March 21st

The Down Syndrome Centre is one of the LED Group ROBUS’ chosen charities for 2017.

Each year Down Syndrome Centre need to raise €500k and, with no government funding, this is raised solely through the generosity of the Irish people.

The Soar Foundation

LED Group is a proud supporter of The Soar Foundation and the work of Tony Griffin. Soar is an independent national youth outreach movement built on an early intervention preventative model focused on the peer to peer delivery of critical life-skills. Soar creates and delivers programs for young people in which they are given the opportunity to be themselves, to build self-confidence, self-belief and emotional awareness.

LED Group have chosen SOAR as one of their main charities in 2017 to help achieve their Vision:

• Soar strive to reach approx. 7,000 young people with their life changing early intervention emotional well-being programs

• Soar aim to have a program delivery team of 6 x accredited facilitators, 6 x facilitators in training and 20 x early training crew

• Official launch of Soar’s Young Men’s Program in Q3 reaching approx. 780 young men across the country

• Continued roll-out of Soar’s Young Women’s Program reaching approx. 1,500 young women across the country

• Investigate a Parent/Guardian program assisting in authentic engagement with young people

• Potential Emotional Well-being Teacher Training Module in partnership with DCU

• Align with international leaders to research and evaluate Soar’s work in personal development and emotional well-being

• Appoint Head of Development to focus on Soar’s long term financial sustainability

• Launch sustainable funding initiatives such as corporate programs, a monthly giving campaign and on-line Soar merchandise

LED Group Marketing Manager Deirdre Howard was delighted to visit the Centre with her son Ronan to present a donation of €10,000 to fundraising co-ordinator Aileen Moon. “We are delighted to support the DSC, a beacon of light to families all over Ireland and a centre of education and early intervention for children with Down Syndrome” commented Deirdre.

ROBUS welcomed Marcus Child to LED Group’s Headquarters in Dublin where staff enjoyed inspiring talks about “The Power of Positivity at Work…playing your part in a can-do culture at LED Group” and “Exceeding Expectations…contributing to the Wow Factor of the ROBUS customer experience”

Marcus is an unstoppable person... A rock climber, mountaineer, caver, footballer, adventure fisherman and father of three. Former English Literature Teacher, Teacher Trainer, Management Consultant he now travels the world sharing his ideas with people who want to achieve growth, success and happiness at work and beyond.

Here Marcus is pictured with LED Group’s CEO Michael Slein who found both sessions uplifting, leaving him and all the staff at LED Group truly motivated and energised!

Marcus has had a remarkable and uplifting impact on the people and results of many well-known businesses during the past years. His commitment to individual and organisational development began with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, awarded with distinction at Cambridge University.
