Preface

The 6th International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition(IWAIPR 2018) was the biennial event of a series of pioneer conferences on artificialintelligence and pattern recognition in the scientific community active in these fields inCuba and other countries.

As has been the case for previous editions of the conference, IWAIPR 2018 hostedworldwide participants with the aim of promoting and disseminating ongoing researchon mathematical methods and computing techniques for artificial intelligence andpattern recognition, in particular in bioinformatics, cognitive and humanoid vision, computer vision, image analysis and intelligent data analysis, as well as their appli-cation in a number of diverse areas such as industry, health, robotics, data mining, opinion mining and sentiment analysis, telecommunications, document analysis, andnatural language processing and recognition. Moreover, IWAIPR 2018 was a forum forthe scientific community to exchange research experience, to share new knowledge, and to increase the cooperation among research groups working in artificial intelli-gence, pattern recognition, and related areas.

IWAIPR 2018 received 101 contributions from 12 countries. After a rigorous blindreviewing process, where three highly qualified reviewers reviewed each submission,42 papers authored by 138 authors from seven countries were accepted. The scientificquality of the accepted papers was above the overall mean rating.

Like the most recent editions of the conference, IWAIPR 2018 was a single-trackconference in which all papers where presented in oral sessions. IWAIPR 2018 pre-sentations were grouped into six sessions: Artificial Intelligence and Applications;Biometrics, Image, and Video Analysis; Data Mining and Applications; MachineLearning Theory and Applications; Pattern Recognition and Applications; SignalsAnalysis and Processing.

We like to point out that the reputation of the IWAIPR conferences is growing andtherefore the proceedings are published in the series Lecture Notes in Computer Sci-ence by Springer.

Besides the 42 accepted submissions, the scientific program of IWAIPR 2018 alsoincluded the contribution of an outstanding invited speaker, namely, Edwin Diday(Paris-Dauphine University, CEREMADE, France). The paper of this keynote appearsin these proceedings.

IWAIPR 2018 was organized by Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas, Cuba(UCI) and the Cuban Association for Pattern Recognition (ACRP) with the sponsorshipof the Cuban Society for Mathematics and Computer Sciences (SCMC). Weacknowledge and appreciate their valuable contribution to the success of IWAIPR2018.

We gratefully acknowledge the help of all members of the Organizing Committeeand of the Program Committee for their support and for the rigorous work in thereviewing process.

We also wish to thank the members of the local committee for their unflagging workin the organization of IWAIPR 2018 that has helped create an excellent conference andproceedings.

We are especially grateful to Alfred Hofmann (Vice President Publishing, ComputerScience, Springer), Anna Kramer (Assistant Editor, Computer Science Editorial,Springer), and Volha Shaparava (Springer Nature OCS Support) for their support andadvice during the preparation of this LNCS volume.

Special thanks are due to all authors who submitted to IWAIPR 2018, includingthose of papers that could not be accepted.

Finally, we invite the artificial intelligence and pattern recognition communities toattend IWAIPR 2020 in Havana, Cuba.
