LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE: AN OVERVIEW

Strategic PlanIn 2009, the Board of Trustees adopted

an updated Strategic Plan designed to re-main in effect through 2016. The Boardrecognizes that strategic planning is a con-tinuous process, that achievement of goalsmust be measured periodically, and thatgoals must be challenged and revised as nec-essary. The Strategic Plan is guided by theoverriding principle that LVC aspires to bethe best regional liberal arts and pre-profes-sional college in Pennsylvania. [link toStrategic Plan]

Faculty and StaffLVC has about 100 full-time faculty

members, supplemented by a strong cohortof adjunct faculty. Eighty-eight percent offull-time faculty have earned a Ph.D. orequivalent degree. Except for departmentchairs, most full-time faculty maintain a 4/4teaching load.

LVC maintains a celebratory culture withrespect to excellence in teaching; it is themost fundamental aspect of faculty per-formance evaluation. However, facultymembers are also respected contributors totheir disciplines as active scholars and per-formers. [link to Faculty Work webpage]Recent initiatives, such as the Arnold Expe-riential Grants and the Pleet Initiative, pro-mote faculty-student projects and supportthe notion of high impact experiences forthe student body.

The College is also blessed with a strongteam of general officers and administratorswho work collaboratively in support of in-stitutional initiatives. Central Pennsylvaniais known for its stable and hardworkingworkforce, and LVC has been the benefici-ary of that work ethic.

Student LifeThe interrelatedness of student learning

and student life bridges the gap between the‘in’ and ‘out’ of class experiences. LebanonValley offers a large variety of programmingoptions designed to prepare students for lifeafter college as well as to encourage studentsto become involved in their community. Forexample, Effective Development throughGuided Education (EDGE) provides leader-ship development programs. Spiritual Life,Multi-Cultural Activities, Study Abroad, and Alumni Career Mentors provide oppor-tunities to extend LVC experiences far be-yond the classroom.

LVC’s more than 85 clubs and organiza-tions include the Wig and Buckle TheaterCompany, the Concert Choir, and La VieCollegienne, the weekly student newspaper.

The modern Arnold Sports Center andrelated facilities offer recreational opportu-nities for students, faculty, and communitymembers. It also supports Intramural Pro-grams and is the hub of a highly successfulDivision III Athletic Program. LVC isunique in that 29 percent of the full timeundergraduate student body participates inintercollegiate athletics.

All these activities create a collaborative, exciting environment in which LVC stu-dents live and learn.

FacilitiesThe LVC campus contains over 340

acres; campus life, including athletic facili-ties, is concentrated on approximately 150acres. Over $74,000,000 has been investedin major capital projects over the pastdecade. LVC has adopted a capital renewaland planned maintenance program. TheBoard of Trustees is acutely aware that whilea beautiful, attractive and modern campus isimportant, effective programs that fulfill themission of the College are more important.

Financial StandingLVC is financially sound, with annual

operating revenues consistently in excess ofoperating expenditures. LVC’s 2011–2012operating budget is $52 million. The annualoperating budget includes allocations forprogrammatic initiatives as well as provi-sions for planned maintenance and capitalimprovements, additions to quasi-endow-ment, and debt retirement.

The freshman discount rate for the2011–2012 academic year is anticipated tobe 46 percent; controlling the discount ratewill be a challenge for LVC and for its peersin the coming years. Approximately 98 per-cent of the full time student body receivessome type of financial assistance.

As of June 30, 2011, the total endow-ment stood at $50,000,000. Long term debtstood at about $33,200,000.

PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH

Lebanon Valley College MissionLebanon Valley College is a small, private, liberal arts college. Its mission arises directly

from its historical traditions and a relationship with the United Methodist Church. The College’s aim is to enable our students to become people of broad vision, capable of

making informed decisions, and prepared for a life of service to others. To that end, we seekto provide an education that helps students acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and val-ues necessary to live and work in a changing, diverse and fragile world.

Through both curricular and co-curricular activities, we endeavor to acquaint our stu-dents with humanity's most significant ideas and accomplishments, to develop their abilitiesto think logically and communicate clearly, to give them practice in precise analysis and ef-fective performance, and to enhance their sensitivity to and appreciation of differencesamong human beings.

Lebanon Valley College aspires to pursue this mission within a community in which car-ing and concern for others is a core value. We value strong and nurturing faculty interactingclosely with students; encouraging individual student development; and affirm the interre-latedness of liberal learning and the ideal of vocation. We regard the cultivation of wisdomthat is the capacity of judging rightly in matters of life and conduct, and a lifelong love oflearning as the ultimate reward of the educational experience.

The College motto is, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."(John 8:32)
