Very Rev. Thomas P. Acklin, O.S.B.

Father Julio Alvarez-Garcia (right) andMonsignor Raymond G. East, members of theSeminary Board of Regents, presented aworkshop on March 24 examining theHispanic culture and its impact on Seminaryformation, parish life and the need forinculturation. He spoke about his personalexperiences and from documents provided bythe National Conference of Catholic Bishopson Hispanic ministry.

In our last newsletter, I spoke of some ele-ments of the Seminary spiritual life program, particularly its focus upon the Eucharist. An-other aspect of Seminary lifeat Saint Vincent which hasborne much fruit is our strongemphasis on community life.

Benedictine seminarianslive in the Monastery andparticipate in the prayer andcommunity life of the monas-tic community. DiocesanSeminary students live inLeander and Roderick Halls, and share a life together in-cluding prayer, meals, recre-ation and study. In placing anemphasis upon communitylife, we are well aware thatmost of these diocesan semi-

place in the give and take of daily life together.Indeed, one reaches maturity not only by bear-ing with each other but in forming good, deepfriendships in which faith-sharing, hard workand fun take place. As we watch the growthof seminarians throughout their time at SaintVincent, it has often been our experience thatdeepening sensitivity which comes through the

common life allows individualseminarians to become moreother-oriented, and more at-tentive and sensitive to theneeds of others. It is our hopethat future priests will formstrong bonds with seminar-ians, not only from their owndioceses but from elsewhere, bonds that will hopefully con-tinue into the years to come, but which will also spur the fu-ture priest to continue to nur-ture and treasure relation-ships with fellow priests.

Though the future diocesanpriest will probably never live

narians will be parish priestsand not monks. Particularlyduring these times of a priest shortage, thismeans that many of them will probably be liv-ing alone throughout much of their priestlyministry. Nonetheless, the Program of PriestlyFormation designed by the national Confer-ence of Catholic Bishops and approved by theVatican Congregation does call for four yearsof residential Seminary community life. It seemsto me that this is very important. The manyindefinable ways in which a future priest be-comes more deeply aware of the meaning ofhis membership in the Body of Christ takes

in such a community settingagain, I am reminded that

there are many aspects of priestly formationwhich are meant to be nourishing and intenseduring these years, so that the priest can con-tinue to draw upon these strengths when hehas left the Seminary. The experiences ofpraying together and living together are richopportunities to develop a great love of com-munity so that the future priest will be able tobe a community builder and an outstandingleader of community prayer. While the futurepriest will probably not have the opportunityto enter so deeply into the study of theology, nor to continue to be supervised in his pasto-ral endeavors as he is in the Seminary, theseprocesses are extremely important for his fu-ture theological development and pastoralattunement. Likewise, community life providesan attunement which the priest, later livingmuch more on his own, needs to have in orderto be aware of others within a lived-faith ex-perience of membership in the Body of Christ.Indeed, the priest is among those whom heshepherds in the person of Christ, as the headof that body. We likewise try to balance thelife of the Seminary community with an aware-ness of the Universal Church. Saint VincentSeminary is enriched by having seminariansstudying here from countries such as Haiti,Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Brazil, El Salvador,Colombia, Mexico, India, Slovakia and Po-land. Moreover, the experience of each of thesixteen local diocesan churches is brought intoour common experience here at Saint Vincent. We constantly keep in mind the needs and in-tentions of that greater community, those whorequest our prayers, certainly also you, ouralumni and friends, who enable us to continueto flourish as a Seminary community and whoare living reminders to us of Christ so power-fully in our midst.

ceived his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture fromthe Pontifical Biblical Commission in VaticanCity. “It was read by many people and I hada lot of feedback from people who found ithelpful. The more I taught Scripture the moreaware I was that it was not receiving a wideraudience,” he explained. “There is a lot of goodBiblical scholarship out there, but it is not ac-cessible to people who are not scholars.”

He wanted to write a book “which could beunderstood in the context of ordinary life,”while retaining the scholarly historical-criticalmethod.

Although his book is “really for anyone wholoves the Bible,” Father Demetrius has said twomain groups of people have been impactedby his work. The first group was “people whostruggled with unfulfilled expectations in retire-ment. The second was people who were ter-minally ill. They found it helpful. So there weresome unexpected results in that regard.”

Father Demetrius has always been inter-ested in writing. But he was always busy withother duties and just did not have the time towrite.

“I was rector for 17 years, novice directorand teaching, and it was too difficult to writethen. I was giving summer retreats also and

workshops on renewal. I was relieved of myadministrative duties in 1983 and applied fora sabbatical in 1985-1986. So in the spring of1986, I went to Savannah and in three monthswrote my first book, all in longhand. By Easterit was finished.”

Father Demetrius’ second book is CherishChrist Above All: The Bible in the Rule of

Benedict (1996), also published by PaulistPress. It was based on a series of lectures hegave at an annual workshop for abbots.

“It was a natural development. I had taughtScripture for 40 years and lived a monasticlife for 50 years. And no one had written abook like this, dealing with the use of Scrip-ture in The Rule. Most of the commentatorswere scholars of The Rule, and they looked atit from the perspective of Benedict. My pri-mary expertise is Scripture and so I looked atThe Rule from this perspective first. So the sec-ond book seemed to fill a void.”

When he is not able to write due to otherduties, he is always thinking about his ideas andfuture book projects.

“I have kept in the back of my mind a bookon the Bible and aging, but there is anotherone that is more urgent, and that is what I amworking on next. That is the spirituality of theGospel of John. It has some very interestingperspectives on Christian living, especially themystical challenge of Christianity. John was agreat mystic.”

The title is tentatively: “The Fourth Gospel:A Mystical Portrait of Jesus.”

“I would like to point out in the book thatthe gospel is a very urgent challenge to movebeyond merely ritual and verbal expressionsof Christianity to a deeply personal, intimateunion with God. I think this would be very help-ful for people who are yearning for a moremystical experience in religion.”

Vincent portrays: Each man, woman and childis a creation of God, shaped in the likeness ofGod, a sister or brother of mine, another I. Inthe Christian vision, every human person, however warped, however savage, is to beloved as Jesus loved and loves us. A toughtheology, not easily translated into today’srealities.”

His third choice was information orappreciation. Father Burghardt, quoting fromRabbi Abraham Heschel, said that today’s trapis believing that “everything can be explained, that reality is a simple affair, which has only tobe organized in order to be mastered ... MustI envy Bill Gates, marvel at my Macintosh, gaze openmouthed at the computer thatcrushed chess champion Garry Kasparov, andnever see myself, man or woman, as the mostingenious creation of them all, the very imageof God on earth?

“What will drive the priestly people of Godin the next century? Only information piledupon information, or information selectivelyimbibed and salted with wonder? And wherewill you take your stand? Happily, in all three

choices, it’s not an either/or; it’s the Catholicboth/and. It’s individualism for the building ofcommunity; it’s ethical justice supplemented bybiblical; it’s information ingested with awe.

“A swift conclusion. A Sufi mystic wascomplaining to God about the terrible stateof the world. Finally, in angry desperation, hecried out to God, ‘Why don’t you dosomething about this?’ God’s reply? ‘I did. Imade you’.”

Father Burghardt has received 21 honorarydoctoral degrees from colleges and universitiesacross the United States. His books includePreaching the Just Word (1996); Love is aFlame of the Lord: More Homilies on the JustWord (1995); Preach the Word withBoldness: Homilies for Risen Christians (1994);and others. Marous, Jr.,Chairman, Seminary Board of Regents, who also spoke at the commencement.

The Rev. Walter J. Burghardt, S.J.,received an honorary doctor of divinity degreefrom Saint Vincent Seminary at the Seminary’s152nd annual commencement, May 8, atSaint Vincent Archabbey Basilica.

Father Burghardt, a senior fellow atWoodstock Theological Center, has written 17books, and has been featured on national radioand television programs and lectured atcolleges, universities and seminaries across theUnited States. He has been listed inContemporary Authors, Two ThousandNotable Americans, Personalities of America,Who’s Who in the East, The Directory ofAmerican Scholars, The American CatholicWho’s Who, Dictionary of InternationalBiography, The International Authors andWriters Who’s Who, Who’s Who in Americaand a number of other publications.

Father Burghardt served for 45 years as themanaging editor/editor-in-chief of thescholarly journal, Theological Studies. Heestablished and directs the WoodstockTheological Center’s Preaching the Just Wordprogram, which assists priests and otherministers of the gospel in being more effectivein preaching social justice. The program, sinceits formation, has reached over 2,700preachers in the United States, Australia,Canada and Jamaica.

In his commencement speech, “From I toAwe: A Catholic Vision for the ThirdMillennium,” Father Burghardt looked at threecritical areas which confront the United Statesand the Catholic Church today, “three sets ofchoices, goals, where the priesthood of all thefaithful can make a difference, choices whereunless you and your kind make a difference, there will be no difference.”

He proposed choices between individualismor community, where individualism in today’ssense means acquisition of wealth, power andprestige; while community is “the good animaginative God had in mind on the six daysof creation; the good symbolized in theGarden of Eden, in that original, all-embracingsingle community where for a brief shiningmoment humanity was at peace with God,humans with one another, humans with earthand sea and sky. It is the covenant Godenvisioned in Christ...

“Very simply,” he asked, “what will driveAmerica in its third century: a despotism ofrugged individualists or a democracy ofindividuals for others? Will the individualismwe proudly cherish serve the common goodor greedy self-interest?”

His second choice was between ethicaljustice or biblical justice. Father Burghardtnoted that “ethical justice does not demand ofus what Christ commands, ‘Love one anotheras I have loved you.’ ... A justice symbolizedby a blindfolded lady with measuring scalesand a sword is admirable but insufficient.Imperative is a fresh vision, the vision Saint

The March 18, 1998, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s story on men who opt for thepriesthood after pursuing other careersfeatured a number of Saint Vincentseminarians from the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

“My life was empty. There was a bigvoid within me. God kept calling me to thepriesthood,” Tom Lewandowski, a second-year theologian from Duquesne, toldwriter Vicki Rock. He had worked ata Strip District warehouse for eightyears and driven a tractor-trailercross-country for five years beforeanswering the call.

Others interviewed were Joseph Codori,Emsworth, a former civil engineer; TonyGargotta, Beechview, a former hospitalradiation therapist; Bob Vular, Wexford, aformer sales manager; James Holland, EastMcKeesport, a former nurse; and TerryO’Connor, Squirrel Hill, a former criminaldefense and personal injury lawyer.

Men entering the priesthood later in life“found their careers inadequate. They thoughtthey wanted material things, but they’ve foundthat’s not enough,” commented Father ThomasAcklin, O.S.B., Seminary Rector. Statisticsback him up, indicating 13 percent of menentering theological programs are 40 or older.

Father Sparacino, who was an occupationaltherapist, was inspired by his parents to enterthe priesthood. “I saw their love for God, theirlove for the church and the way they lived outtheir own Christianity,” he told the newspaper.

New Seminary

Polo Shirt

Available

The Saint Vincent Seminary community has been growing in the past several years. Thedemand for Seminary merchandise has also increased. As a result, the Saint Vincent CollegeBook Center is selling Seminary golf shirts with the Seminary logo embroidered on them. BrotherMark J. Evans, O.S.B., the book center manager, worked with officers from the student gov-ernment to gauge interest in this new item. The 1996-1997 Resident House Forum Vice Presi-dent Don Cramer of the Diocese of Harrisburg and Atlanta Seminarian Terry Crone workedon the design and with Brother Mark on the project. The 1997-1998 House Forum Vice Presi-dent Doug Dorula of the Greensburg Diocese took office and continued with the project. Aftergetting some samples made, Dorula polled the diocesan seminarians and the result was favor-able. The shirts went on sale prior to spring break of 1998 and the response has been positive.Cost is $25 each, plus $3 postage, and they are available to alumni. Credit card orders can bemade through the Saint Vincent Book Center at 724-537-4557. Looking over the new shirtsare the 1998-1999 Resident House Forum officers, from left, David Brzoska, Liturgical Coordi-nator, Diocese of Charlotte, North Carolina; Douglas Dorula, President; William Berkey, So-cial Coordinator, Diocese of Greensburg; Michael Zimcosky, Vice President, Diocese ofGreensburg.

groups which comprise the Saint Vincentcommunity. Living, working and praying withthem have been tremendous. There is ahospitality, a warmth, a genuine fraternalregard that exists here for one another and tome that stands out the most. There is anaffability for one another that keeps drawingyou into their lives.”

“As I prepared for the ministry I found it tobe a good place to be nurtured in, and I feelthat I’m ready for the ministry,” said FatherDamian, who was ordained on June 6.

“When I arrived here I was very insecurebecause of the cultural and languagedifferences,” said Fernando Molina-Restrepoof the Archdiocese of Atlanta, and a nativeof Colombia. “But everyone has always beenvery helpful and kind, especially Father Tom(Acklin, Seminary Rector).”

Before coming to Pennsylvania, he lived inGeorgia and before that in Bogota, and so hewill never forget the Pennsylvania winters. “Inever was in weather like this in my life. Iarrived here in January and there was snowand the lakes were all frozen. It was too cold.It was like hell. Then I discovered that it wasreally heaven because of the goodness of thepeople here.”

“You can feel the spirit of Christ in theSeminary community,” said Adrian C. H. Pleusof the Archdiocese of Atlanta, who will beordained to the diaconate July 1 in Atlanta.“Many of the students give thanks for thestrong leadership of Father Tom Acklin, andreflect on what a fine, prayerful person he is.We all have a great affection for him. We alsoappreciate the efforts of every member of theSaint Vincent community. They have beenvery sincere in their efforts, and the Seminaryleadership holds the whole thing together. TheBenedictines also have this charism, and theyhave been generous with their time andfacilities. I know the people of God appreciateall their work.”
