assistant stylist for Chelsea Caruso of Matawan, a stylist atGerber’s Salon in Keyport.

“I was one of the lucky ones; I just lost my car,” she said, referringto those whose homes had been flooded or demolished by thesuperstorm.

She said heat and hot water at her home was finally restored onDec. 6.

For Myrna A. Velez, assistant principal of the vocational school, thepampering was a way to give back to area communities.

About a dozen students from the vocational school assistedlicensed stylists for the event.

reservations,” Velez said.

Haircuts for Exit 117 was the brainchild ofAndrea Agin, a sales consultant for Emiliani.

Agin of Red Bank said she contacted schoolofficials to pitch the idea, and she enlisted 26hair stylists from the state to volunteer theirservices for the event.

“This is the least I can do,” Caruso said.

Youssef Youssef of Keyport said he heardabout the event at the Keyport SeniorCenter. This was the first time he’d everbeen to the school for a haircut, and he waspleasantly surprised and happy with his cut

by Jasmine Astafa of Manalapan. Astafa is a stylist at Act III HairStylists in that township.

Participating meant a lot to hair stylist Nadya Eastmond of EastBrunswick. Eastmond’s family still lives in the borough and hadextensive damage to the first floor of their home.

“I’m from Union Beach,” she said. “It is so sad.”

When Lopez walked into the school, she had long hair. But by thetime Caruso put the scissors down, Lopez had short hair withlonger angled sides.

“You can do this,” Caruso told Lopez as she was blow-drying herhair, “You can do this on your own.”

The style was simple, yet a bit on the “edgy side,” said CaseyBergen, 18, of Keyport, a student at the school. Bergen watchedCaruso as she used texturizing scissors to define the back ofLopez’s haircut and style.

“I love it,” Lopez said. “It’s wonderful.”

All the attendees received an Emiliani tote bag with coffee, tea anddesserts provided by Blue Water Seafood in Red Bank, accordingto Agin.

“We are hoping to have this again,” she said. “Everyone really hada great time, and our residents seem to love their new haircuts.”

Velez agreed, citing the students learned a lot from theprofessionals and were all pleased to “give back to thecommunities.”
