1 One of the highlights of being in Year 8 at Yavneh is the popular camp of outdoor survival – a three-day camp in the ‘wilderness’ of Anglesea with Auscamp. The camp was titled ‘We Matter’ – exploring the impact each individual has on themselves, the people around them, the groups of which they are a part and the environment. Living in the outdoors for three days, the students were challenged to take care of themselves, their peers and their groups through teamwork, encouragement and resilience. The students were divided into ‘villages’ and together with staff they erected tents, built their villages, cooked and camped together. They had to carry all their equipment from campsite to campsite and ensure that their equipment was packed properly and well maintained. While working so closely together, the students were given the opportunity to examine the importance of every social interaction that people share and how each individual impacts the dynamics of the groups of which they are a part. They learned how teamwork can ensure that the work gets done and the food gets cooked – ensuring that everyone is provided for. Through group discussions, ‘kumzitz’ singalongs around the bonfire and group meals, the students bonded over shared experiences and connected with their teachers and the Tzevet on a different and meaningful level. Through exciting outdoor education activities such as mountain bike riding, surfing and kayaking the students learned more about their capabilities, their ability to support their peers through new challenges and just how exhilarating the outdoors can be – positive for one’s wellbeing – physical, emotional, social and spiritual. These kinds of camps come with challenging moments that compel individuals to push themselves in areas that they aren’t usually forced to rise up to –physical stamina, socialisation, teamwork or surviving the outdoors. This is what makes this camp so integral to our student’s development. Staff supported students throughout and it was fantastic to see students surf, cook, build, pack-up, pitch- in and listen to each other throughout the activities. Back in 2012, Year 9 Leibler Yavneh student Zak Josefsberg was convinced by his friends to attend the celebration of the Siyum Hashas celebrating the twelfth completion of the Daf Yomi cycle. Indeed, he attended the community simcha at the Docklands and became so inspired that he began the journey of learning every single day one page of the Talmud. He kept to his commitment all the way up to Year 12, spending an hour every day studying the holy Talmud. He continued studying while he was in Israel and when he returned back to Melbourne he continued to attend a Daf Yomi shiur and is now about to complete his own mammoth personal Siyum; in a few weeks, Zak will be celebrating his massive commitment with tens of thousands of other Jews around the world, with the completion of the next cycle.

Zak is a symbol of what a Yavneh student can achieve when they are determined to reach their spiritual goal. Fortunately, he is not the only one. At the celebration of the upcoming Siyum Hashas, another Yavneh graduate will be one of the main speakers - speaking about his own journey of studying the Daf daily over the last seven and half years.

Over time, there have been a few Yavneh graduates, like Aron Rubin and Shmoiki Berkowitz, who actually have even become maggidei shiurim themselves – teaching others the Daf every day. I personally have had the satisfaction of having quite a few Yavneh graduates take over my Daf shiur while I have been away and needed a substitute.

We wish a hearty Mazel Tov to all the Yavneh graduates who are now completing the learning of all of the Talmud. We can all come and show our support by attending the Melbourne Siyum Hashas on December the 16th at the Pullman Hotel, Albert Park.

YEAR 9 YAVNEH STUDENT AND A 71/2 YEAR COMMITMENT!

CONTINUEDthe classroom setting. It is this that guides much of what we provide in the End of Year program at Yavneh Secondary. Last week we released to families the calendar of events for the Secondary School for the last two weeks of the school year. This program includes events (both on- and off-campus) that are educational and fun – allowing students and teachers to learn and bond over shared experiences that are diverse and different from the classroom. Years 7 and 8 will enjoy the ‘Hands On’ Learning program with activities run by the Science, Maths, Hebrew and Jewish Life departments together with Physical Education excursions full of outdoor activities. Year 9 will enjoy a Surf Day and then embark on the intensive 5-day City Week program exploring the theme of ‘Careers’. Year 10 have a full program including the exciting VCE adViCE day – preparing them for the rigours of the VCE program. They will then participate in the ‘Hugos Heroes’ First Aid program undertaking a First Aid certificate course in memory of Hugo Paluch ז"ל and enjoy a Surf Day before they begin the VCE Headstart program. Year 11 will be immersed in the richness of Jewish learning at the ‘Ayeka’ Jewish Studies Conference, will enjoy a Surf Day and then begin the VCE Headstart program.

We are excited to offer all our students a rich and varied program that celebrates and culminates a successful year of learning at Yavneh.

Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom

Leibler Yavneh College is extremely fortunate to have the support of the Jewish Children’s Aid Society who are heavily involved in the education of children with special needs. The goal of JCAS is to ensure that every Jewish child is able to attend a Jewish Day School, believing that students of all abilities have a right to a Jewish education.

Funds are raised primarily through the Posh Opp Shoppe, an opportunity shop run by volunteers under the dynamic direction of Rosalie Silverstein, OAM. These funds help ensure that students at Leibler Yavneh College are provided with support structures such as individualised support, subject specific modifications, the fostering of social interactions, and the provision of in-class support.

The hard work and dedication of Rosalie and her team provide so many students across Melbourne with an opportunity to receive a Jewish education and develop a strong Jewish identity. The Posh Opp Shoppe relies on volunteers and donations to be able to provide funding for many of our students. If you would like to donate, please visit; www.jcas.org.au/how-to-donate.

Please be mindful of others when you use our drop off and pick up zone at the entrance to the College in Nagle Avenue. The most efficient way to manage the traffic is for parents to drive down Nagle Ave in an easterly direction and then pull into the curb if your child is ready to be collected. If your child is not outside, please circle around the block until your child has come outside to be picked up.

The security guard’s role is primarily to protect our students and not to manage traffic, please enable the guard to focus on security by following our Kiss and Go guidelines.

LIONS DEN BANQUETWe were delighted to welcome a record of over 85 guests to the 7th Annual Lion’s Den Banquet at “Encore St Kilda Beach”. We welcomed guests on “Tel Aviv” beach with first course and continued indoors with an amazing 7 course degustation menu served to guests including a special interactive chefs dessert table.

We are thrilled to advise that this year’s event has raised $113,000 for our school, the most money raised in the seven-year history of Lion’s Den. As with the previous events, these funds will be allocated to much needed projects for Leibler Yavneh College.

A special thank you to Leon Burman for creating such a memorable and truly unique event.

It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of the year and it is time for us to have our concert. We were so proud of the children in the lead up to our concert in JKB. We practiced the songs together every day. Wednesday was our concert day! There was so much excitement as we put on our costumes and waited for our parents to arrive. The children sang to our video song quietly in the room next door as the parents watched with big smiles and some tears on their faces. Then it was the children’s turn to perform. They performed with such enthusiasm. All their teachers and parents were very proud!

YEAR 4 CAMP REFLECTIONS

‘INBESTIGATING’ WEBINARS

Recently, all the Year 4s went to Werribee Zoo. We were split into four groups: Tel-Aviv, Haifa, Eilat and Yerushalayim. I was in Eilat and I had a fun group. We got to see most of the animals at the zoo and went on the Australian trail which had a lot of Australian animals in their natural habitats. Everybody went on a safari and saw the enormous space the animals had to live in. The driver told us interesting facts about each of them and how they survive in the wild.

We had a little snack and lunch at the zoo. Eagerly, we left for our camp site and everybody was so excited to find out their cabins.

We all enjoyed fabulous outdoor activities, but when it was too hot, we had inside fun things to do. We enjoyed listening to a D’var Torah after every meal. The food was delicious, and we sat with different people for each meal. It was nice to be with teachers outside school and do fun activities with them. It was a wonderful experience for all the Year 4 Students.

Gali Shaltiel Year 4

On the day of camp, everyone was so excited. We got on the bus and headed for Werribee Open Range Zoo. When we arrived, we could already see some of the amazing animals like camels, reptiles, gorillas and monkeys. We saw lots more in their natural environment when we went on ‘The Safari Train Ride’.

We got to Anglesea Valley Lodge campsite in the late afternoon. When we were given our cabins, we were all so excited. We did lots of exciting and fun activities like archery, bike riding and low ropes course. We also had a water balloon fight when it was super hot. My favourite was the water balloon fight!

We all have great memories of a fantastic Year 4 Camp. We say a big ‘thankyou’ to all our teachers for taking us on this amazing camp.

Nadav Leibler Year 4

Students from Year 3 joined other primary schools from around Australia to partake in a unique opportunity to be part of a live Q&A webinar with The Inbestigators’ cast members. The students first explored principles and etiquette around webinars learning how these systems work to link people from any location. The students were able to ask questions with the cast and receive immediate feedback from all those involved. It was wonderful to see the students connected with other students from around Australia engaging in conversations around investigation and research. They especially loved their personalised shout out from the cast!

AM ECHAD B’LEV ECHAD – ONE PEOPLE WITH ONE HEART!

YEAR 1 CHUMASH

In Year 5 Israel Studies, the students recently learned about Yitzchak Ben-Zvi. Ben-Tzvi was the second president of the State of Israel and he was also an historian. He was born in the Ukraine. He founded a Jewish defence organization to protect the Jews from the constant anti-Semitic attacks. He felt that the only solution for the Jewish people was in Eretz Yisrael, so he immigrated to Palestine in 1907. He became one of the founders of the famous Hashomer, the Watchman, which was formed to protect isolated Jewish settlements throughout Eretz Yisrael from Arab attacks. In the 1920s when Arab rioters went on a rampage and attacked, looted and murdered Jews, Ben-Zvi helped to establish the Haganah, the underground defence organization.

After spending much of his life fighting for Jewish causes, Ben-Zvi was elected President of the State of Israel in 1952. He served faithfully until his death in 1963. He insisted on living in a modest wooden hut in Jerusalem, and not a fancy presidential villa. He is warmly remembered as the president who served as an example for his people.

Ben-Tzvi was particularly fascinated by the fact that the Jewish people are so multi-cultured and diverse. Within one nation there are Jews from all over the world, with so many different languages, customs and traditions. That is because when the Jews were exiled from Israel, they spread out all over the world. Therefore, today there are Sephardi Jews, Ashkenazi Jews, African Jews, American Jews, Australian Jews and Jews from Arab countries. There are Jews with light skin and dark skin. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, we are all Jews from the family of Avraham and Sara.

Ben-Tzvi would regularly invite representatives from the different Jewish ethnic communities and other minority communities to his residence. Each group would tell the history of its community, its customs, rituals and traditions. They would proudly often present Ben-Tzvi with a gift that was unique to their culture. He would proudly display them in his residence.

To further their knowledge of the different Jewish ethnic communities, the students researched select groups and the created their own “representative” of the groups using plastic bottles, material and a variety of accessories! Representatives included Chassidic Jews, Yemenite Jews, Sephardic Jews, Ashkenazi Jews and of course Israelis. The students thoroughly enjoyed the project and developed their skills as doll-makers! They beautifully displayed the fact that although the Jewish nation is very diverse in appearance, it truly is and Am Echad B’Lev Echad, one nation with one heart!

Michelle Sharp Primary Jewish Studies Teacher

In Year One we have made giant strides in preparing for 2020 by advancing our Chumash learning. The students have been discussing and chronicling the storyline progression; sequencing events on a timeline and charting where the important identities fit within the timeline. The students have also thoroughly enjoyed being paired up with other students in the class as well as Prep children to read from their texts. This not only encourages cross classroom co-operation; it also engages the students. There have been many activities done in class to help the students retain and apply their newfound knowledge including arts and crafts, projects and much more. We are looking forward to watching the class thrive in Chumash lessons next year.

FROM YAVNEH’S PHD (PRIMARY HEBREW DEPARTMENT)

בס׳׳ד

One of the exciting things about writing in the Kesher, is that we get to fill in the blanks. Often, the first question we ask our children at the end of a long school day is: “What did you learn today?” and often the response is: “mmm I don’t remember.” So, let us fill in some of the blanks as to what happened in the Primary Hebrew Department – the PHD- this week.

Last week, Eldad from the JNF, came and spoke to our students about some of the various projects JNF is involved in. We, the PHD, were so impressed with our student’s knowledge, interest and love for Israel. Eldad returned this week and invited us to partake in a new project supporting the children that live in the South of Israel and attend the school Sha’ar HaNegev שער הנגב.

Mrs. Samuni prepared a power point on the school Sha’ar HaNegev, which is situated south of Ashkelon, on the Gaza boarder. We showed this to our students in Years 4 and 5. Together we discussed what life would be like living there and what we, at Leibler Yavneh College, could do for these children, to show them that we care about them? We want to show these children that even though we are so far away, we care! Many of our students have been to Israel, many have family there. One of the things we pride ourselves on at Yavneh is that we are like one family. By being part of this beautiful project, we are showing our students that even though we do not know these children, they are part of our extended family and we care about them, support them, love them and of course want to cheer them up. We were so thrilled to learn today that one of the fathers of a student in Year 5 actually learnt at this school. What a small world. איזה עולם קטן.

We are teaching our students the beautiful Hebrew song: “Shevet Achim V’Achayot” “שבט אחים ואחיות”. Meaning we are one tribe of brothers and sisters. We are one! What a special way to welcome the month of Kislev כיסלו.

Each student in Years 4 and 5 has written a lovely letter, in Hebrew, to the children of this school. What better way to put their Hebrew vocabulary to excellent use, then by writing letters to children in Israel? They put all their skills of grammar, of vocab, of sentence structure, of syntax to excellent use. They were so proud of their work, to complete their letters so we could send them to Israel with the Yavneh teachers partaking in the JNF Israel mission.

We hope the long-lost art of “pen pals” will be reborn and hopefully new friendships will be formed.

Wishing all Kesher readers a Shabbat Shalom – שבת שלום

PRE-EXAM LEARNING

YEAR 10 HEBREW CULTURE AND LANGUAGE COURSE

On a sunny Monday evening members, of Rav Berlin’s year 9 Gemara class volunteered to attend an out of school revision lesson at Shaarei Tefillah. The students participated and gained lots of confidence by going over some things that may not have been so clear to everyone.

We would like to thank Rav Berlin for taking out an hour of his busy schedule to teach us outside the school environment.

Ilan Davis Year 9

An Experiential Year

It was an intensive, enjoyable, productive, and fun year where students were encouraged to converse in Hebrew and delve into elements of Israeli culture.

Through a variety of films, the students expanded their knowledge of cultural elements and recent history of Israel and expressed their opinions on the dilemmas and issues they saw. They added to their vocabulary and summarised what was learned in Kahoot activities. They also completed film-reports and held interesting debates relating to Israeli current affairs.

Other highlights of the year were the hands-on activities relating to the topic of Israeli foods by preparing a Tahini dip and transforming the classroom into an Israeli restaurant, role-playing waiters and guests and enjoying an Israeli breakfast.

We ended the year with an Israeli lunch, in which the students joined in teamwork, prepared an order list, collected money, ordered from Mama Falafel, organized the class and had an enjoyable last Hebrew lesson.

We are all so very proud of the students and it was a wonderful year together,

Wishing you all the best of luck!

their organisation and time management as well as take responsibility for their own learning.

Both these programs are aimed at providing Yavneh’s senior students with a solid foundation from which they can flourish. Attendance at these days and completing the work required over the upcoming break will help to ensure students possess a much-needed basis for their future learning.

PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH A GREAT START!

WHAT OUR STUDENTS THOUGHT:

This year in Hebrew, I gained a great understanding of Israeli culture and history. Through our movie analysis I was taught about the conflicts between the Arabs and Israelis, the struggles of the Israeli soldiers and the culture of Israel now and in the past. We also learnt about the amazing culture that Israel has developed over time, combining the cultures of the Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews into something new and special. The conversations that we were taught gave us a solid base on how to sustain conversations in topic that would be relevant to us when in Israel, for example when we did role play of a conversation between a waiter and a guest at a restaurant, being able to order food in Israel is a valuable skill to have when you actually go to Israel. All the vocabulary we learnt were words that gave us a good base to continue to build our Hebrew on, the way we learnt these words through activities on quizlet and kahoot - was a very good way to learn.

Sadie Boroda Year 10

Throughout the year in our Hebrew class, we watched movies, did fun activities, learnt conversations and learnt about basic Hebrew skills to help us expand our knowledge of the Hebrew language. The movies we watched gave us knowledge on life in Israel from the past and the present. We have learnt about how Asheknazim didn’t like Sefardim, life next to the green line, Jews meeting other cultures and many more. We also did many activities using platforms such as kahoot and quizlet to help us remember what happened in the movie. We also learnt relevant conversations about ordering food in restaurants and other daily conversations. Another fun activity we did was learning how to make Tahini and also the Israeli breakfast which was fun to learn because we learnt as a team and worked together by learning through activities instead of listening to a teacher talk for a whole lesson. From our discussions in class I learnt about the messages of movies with connections to Israeli life and culture. With our discussions I learnt other classmates’ opinions and ideas about what they thought life in Israel was about. I really enjoyed this course.

Liron Lelah Year 10

From Monday December 9 to Thursday December 12, Year 10 and 11 students will be participating in the VCE Head Start program, aimed at introducing our VCE students to the subjects they will be undertaking over the coming year. This program will provide students with an opportunity to meet and get to know their classroom teachers for 2020, begin to develop an understanding of individual subject expectations and allow students a chance to ask questions regarding VCE as a whole or specific study. On these days, students will also learn what work they must complete over the upcoming summer break to ensure they are prepared for the 2020 academic year.

As an introduction to their VCE journey, Year 10 students will also be taking part in a VCE AdViCE Day on Thursday December 5. On this day Year 10 students will be provided with an outline of the VCE system, have the opportunity to hear from Yavneh alumni who will share advice based on their own VCE experiences and participate in workshops which will provide students with practical ways to improve

JEWISH LIFE UPDATEBARME EVENING

Last week we celebrated the conclusion of the BarME program for 2019 with a special evening event hosted by the Fell’s. The evening involved: learning with parents guided by Rabbi Cowen, a highlights video of the year, student presentations on what they have learned and a powerful address by Rabbi Mirvis. A special mention to the eight boys who have committed to regular learning in the Beit Midrash with the Tzevet this year. Kol Hakavod.

We can’t wait to see the positive impact that the Year 7 boys will have now that they have reached the milestone of Jewish adulthood.

Good day!

Last week we went on survival camp with year 8. Camp was amazing: we got to go outdoors and connect to nature; we had awesome activities such as surfing, rafting and bike riding; we cooked our own meals with food that we had been carrying in our bags; and most importantly we had a good time singing and hanging out with each other. One of the camp’s themes were “we matter to our group”, and undoubtably this camp was a great bonding experience and made the group closer to each other as a whole. That’s the only thing that really matters (and surfing, of course). Shabbat Shalom!

Shauna’s Great Expectations is by Victorian author Kathleen Loughnan. Shauna is in her final year at an elite private school and has great expectations. In one short year, she’ll be travelling the world and chasing her ideal career. Shauna holds an indigenous scholarship and is determined to be the first member of her family to go to university, no matter what other students think of her.

But all her plans are thrown into disarray when she realises she is pregnant. As pressure builds from every corner of her world, careers, reputations and even lives will hang in the balance.

Kathleen Loughnan is a lawyer and author. She was born in rural Victoria and now lives between Australia and Europe with her husband and four children.

How To make friends With the Dark is by American author Cathleen Glasgow. This and Kathleen’s previous novel addresses the important theme of teen depression and making a life for yourself. It’s the brightest day of summer and it’s dark outside. It is dark in your house, dark in your room, and dark in your heart. You feel like the darkness is going to split you apart. Here is what happens when your mother dies.

That’s how it feels for Tiger. It’s always been Tiger and her mother against the world. Then, on a day like any other, Tiger’s mum dies. And now it is Tiger, alone. Here is how you learn to make friends with the dark.

Kathleen Glasgow lives in Tucson, Arizona. She wrote the majority of her first book during arts fellowships and in all it took her eight years to complete. Kathleen now has the opportunity to spend most of her days writing and writes in the Lego room that was formerly her office.

FROM THE YPO...Thank you to everyone who participated in the fabulous weaving workshop with Rachel Wood from Wunder Weave over the past two weeks. The creativity was impressive and the company was lovely! This was our final Women’s Rosh Chodesh Group for 2019 - we’d like this opportunity to thank all the incredible mums, grandmothers, aunties and friends who joined us throughout the year.

This year we will be collecting textbooks, calculators and stationery, and donating these to the Les Twentyman Foundation (LTF) Back-to-School program, who assist in the education of disadvantaged children. Donations to LTF enable organisations to provide current edition textbooks to thousands of disadvantaged students referred by dozens of agencies in and around Melbourne.

Collection boxes will be labelled and located outside the Primary and Secondary Offices from next week for students and/or parents to donate the following items (please refer to this list as their requirements are quite specific):

• New, unused stationery and calculators

• English – novels, texts, DVDs

• Years 7 – 10 textbooks published 2017 – 2019 (please no books published earlier that 2017)

• Any VCE texts used from 2017 – 2019

• Dictionaries – English and other languages (not Hebrew)
