Question The sun pulls on the earth with the force of gravity and causes the earth to move in orbit around the sun. Does the earth pull equally on the sun? Why?

Ideal Answer The force of gravity between earth and sun is an interaction between these two bodies. According to Newton's third law of motion, if one body exerts a force on the other then the other body must exert an equal and opposite force on the first body. Therefore, the sun must experience a force of gravity due to the earth, which is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the force of gravity on earth due to the sun.

Expectations 1. The sun exerts a gravitational force on the Earth.

2. The earth exerts a gravitational force on the sun.

3. The two forces are a third-law pair.

4. The magnitudes of the two forces are the same.

AnticipatedMisconceptions

1. Only the larger object exerts a force.

2. The force of earth on sun may be less than that of sun on earth. 16
