Shenzhen Baoxing Hospital President Xiaofeng Chen,assistant professor of nursing and occupational therapy JohnWong, students Jean Mancuso (ABSN), Sarah Manning (OTD),Jessica Broughton (OTD), Annapurna Ravel (ABSN), MitchellKimber (ABSN), Juliet Barriola (OTD), and instructor ofoccupational therapy Emily Zeman.

Faculty members John Wong and Emily Zeman broughtthree ABSN students and three OTD students in earlyJanuary to Shenzhen, China, for a two-weekindependent study project at two local hospitals andseveral community health centers. In addition tolearning about nursing care and rehabilitationtreatments provided in China and the health policy ofthat region, team members experienced firsthand howtraditional Chinese medicine is used in medicaltreatment and health maintenance.

Team IHP Sports Two Runners at 2019 Boston Marathon

Tom Doucette, MPAS ’18, who works in the sportsmedicine department of Orthopedic Surgery at Brighamand Women’s Hospital, and Kelly Moscariello, amember of the BSN Class of 2020, are the 2019 TeamIHP members who will run the Boston Marathon in April.Via Crowdrise pages, Doucette and Moscariello, bothof whom previously have run marathons, are looking toraise $5,000 each to support Institute causes – the PAprogram for Doucette, and student scholarships forMoscariello.

A team of 10 nurse practitioner students and two facultytraveled to the Dominican Republic for a weeklongservice trip in La Romana to provide health careservices at the bateys, local communities establishedby sugar cane companies for workers to live close tothe fields while having little access to health care orpublic services line running water or electricity. StudentsIrvin Hiralall, Sarah Warden, Louisa Centeno-Silva,Susan Granato, Sarah Franco, Lyndsay Canwell, EmilyDiniz, Lauren McCue, Jen Pinto, and Emily Adams,along with SON faculty Pat Reidy and Sara Smoller,worked with a local health care team from the GoodSamaritan Hospital, over 200 people received medical,dental and health education services. The IHP teamtraveled to a different batey each day and set upmedical clinics to provide care to the many Haitiansliving in these communities, and helped another 200people by providing education on the prevention ofhypertension and oral rehydration and the importanceof hand-washing and dental hygiene.

Ten DPT students in the class of 2020 traveled toGuatemala, accompanied Assistant Professor JaneBaldwin, and 2018 graduates Anna Pietal and BriandaPrado (both of whom had gone in 2017). During the 10-day trip, the group partnered with the non-profit MoveTogether, Inc., which included cultural immersionactivities, clinical care to patients providing in-servicesand training at a new state hospital in Villa Neuva. TheIHP students were challenged to provide care withlimited resources, but used their creativity and ingenuityto develop ideas that provided outstanding results forpatients.

Faculty, students, and alumni from the Department ofPhysical Therapy travelled to Washington, DC, for the2019 APTA Combined Sections Meeting on January 23-26. Several made presentations, and all gathered forthe alumni reception before heading home.

The Interprofessional and Alumni Committee of theStudent Government Association hosted a social mixerheld after the Ann B. Caldwell Lecture: InterprofessionalRounds lecture on January 15. Held at Two SaintsTavern, many of the 600 students who attended thelecture enjoyed a trivia game, a taco bar, and lots ofinterprofessional mixing. Eight students from nursing, occupational therapy, andphysical therapy, accompanied by School of Nursingfaculty Elissa Ladd and Pat Lussier-Duynstee traveledto India to participate in the 2019 Global HealthImmersion Program. Olivia Gampel, Colleen Reynolds,and Brianna Ryan (CSD), Brittany Harris, Valerie Kiers,Laura Mackey, and Caitlin Shea (NP), and ShannonSwensen (PA) participated in clinical postings alongwith their Indian student counterparts in hospitals,village clinics, local schools, and communityorganizations. Faculty contributed to discipline-basedinitiatives and teaching in the areas of leadership,evidence-based health care.

Conferencing in India

School of Nursing faculty Elissa Ladd, AntoniaMakosky, and Pat Lussier-Duynstee co-hosted theconference “Indo-US Symposium on Building Capacityin Interprofessional Health Professions Education”during the winter break while they were travelling inIndia with students. The international conference washeld in conjunction with Manipal Academy of Higher

(NECHE). The Steering Committee thanks theseindividuals for their continued commitment to thisimportant project. The next few months will be spentgathering feedback from the IHP community, collectingsupporting documents, and revising the draft.
