Opening

The establishing shot of this video is of a airplane with two

cleaners. This is already a clear link to song as the song is

called learn how to fly . The cleaners are revealed as Jack

Black and Kyle Gass. They are then alerted as a air steward

walks down the isle. The air steward is revealed to be the

lead singer David Grohl . Jack black tries to find a place to

put a wrapped up package. Once the steward has greeted

the cleaners the music stops and the actually song begins

In then begins to introduce a key characters that are all

played by the band members. This would be trying to

promote the band image and member awareness. They play

the cabin crew, the air steward, a teenager girl and a large

couple. They also play appear as themselves and to further

promote there brand. Then on the on TV screens live

performance of the band is playing. This is element of live

performance makes this video a Hybrid

chorus Once all of the characters have been seated the main chorus

begins. During the chorus the teenage girl the admires the

David Grohl and other band members as they check out the

air hostess. The air steward does the pre flight talk and the

pilots take off. As one of the stewards begins to make coffee

it is then revealed that the package that jack black and kyle

gass is hiding is a sexual stimulant.

Band Awareness The girls goes to the band members and asks for them to

sign their own album. This is an example of branding and is

getting people to know their brand. Other examples of the

branding in this video is that the air steward serve crackers

with the foo fighters logo on the front. This is getting people

more aware of the band.

More shots of the live performance occur as it switches from

that to the plane. They begin to serve up the coffee that has

the sexual stimulant in it. All of the characters have the coffee

except from the band members. All of the characters that

have the coffee do not like it. They begin to get more and

more excited and some begin to imagine things. As the pilot

has took the some of the coffee the band has to step in and

land the plane

Andrew Goodwin’s Theory There is a clear link between the title and the theme of the

music video. And also some links between lyrics and visuals

as when the band begin to save the plane the lyric are “learn

to fly” when the visuals are a the band reading a book about

learning to fly. Also elements of live performance and

narrative. This makes this video a hybrid. It also features alot

of close up shots of the band
