”Franklin offered me more than the opportunity to tap into the common knowledge pool. I learned a few very important life lessons that shaped me into a person that I am proud of today. Franklin taught me to be a complex and logical thinker, and most importantly, I met a few of my greatest friends that I would not have met in

any other circumstance.”Nomin-Erdene Lyons - mongolia environmental StudiesClackamas high School - Oregon, uSA

”International experiences were always a very big part of my life, but I changed my perspectives as soon as I came to Franklin. I used to travel with family all of the time and we used to live abroad, but after coming here I got to see travel through a different set of eyes.”

Hamdan Khouri – united Arab emiratesInternational managementraha International School - Abu dhabi, uAe

”I never saw myself studying econo-mics, but after going on Academic Travel to Istria and Belgrade and studying the economic restructuring of ex-Yugoslavia firsthand the idea became easier to understand. Seeing so-mething in perspective really helps you comprehend the real-life applications of your studies.”

All undergraduate students at Franklin, including semester and year-abroad students, are required to participate in Academic Travel.

Academic Travel courses are regular semester courses that include a 10-day to two-week travel period. The purpose of Academic Travel is to complement regular classroom activities with valuable experiential learning.

Academic Travel courses are taught and led by faculty members with advanced academic expertise and specialist knowledge of a given country or area.

The graduation requirement for Academic Travel is normally fulfilled by successful participation in four three-credit Academic Travel classes. Students must enroll in one Academic Travel class each semester until they complete the required number of travels.

recent Academic Travel destinations have included Austria, Brazil, Cyprus, England, France, Iceland, Italy, Malawi, Scotland, Serbia, Thailand and the UAE.

The cost of most Academic Travel classes is included in the tuition fee (a small supplement is charged for long distance destinations).

”Academic Travel is about understan-ding foreign places and societies in their historical, political, economic and cul-tural context; about sharing new expe-riences with classmates and professors; and - not least - about learning while having fun. ”Compared to other places, Franklin has a strong community among its faculty, staff, and students. As an edu-cator, being able to teach small classes and follow students’ progress over their time here is very appealing. As a scholar, being able to work closely with an excellent group of faculty across disciplines is hard to beat.”

Dr. Brack HaleAssociate Professor of Biology and environmental Science
