The 2017 Belridge Secondary ESC Annual Report provides an informative overview of our school achievements during the 2017 school year. Congratulations to all of the students and staff on their outstanding efforts throughout the 2017 school year. Our school community worked tirelessly to continue to provide ‘Exceptional Opportunities for our Amazing Students’ and delivered a wide range of programs that focus on the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of our students. The 2017 school year was a year filled with many success stories and I commend all of the achievements made by individuals, groups and classes.

Our School Board worked in partnership to review school progress and achievement in line with the Delivery and Performance Agreement and, I extend my thanks to the members of our School Board for being so generous with their time as well as their continued commitment, contribution and dedication to Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre.

Our students have continued to develop and extend their unique skills and abilities within the school environment as well as in the wider community. Each year level participates in a diverse range of activities on our school site as well as specific programs within the local and wider community. These include Physical Education activities such as swimming lessons with our trained swimming instructors on staff, our annual ‘Market Day’, ‘Belsurf’ beach carnival, athletics carnivals, Workplace Learning opportunities, Community volunteering at Grandview Nursing Home, DFES cadet modules with our trained instructors on staff and specific VET Certificate courses that are completed on-site or at TAFE.

Our students in Middle Schooling levels continue to develop and consolidate all of their skills within a classroom environment and out of the school community and I am impressed at all of their efforts to achieve their Individual goals. All teaching staff address all areas of the Australian Curriculum and students also access specialist knowledge and facilities within the Secondary College in Home Economics, Dance, Music as well as Design and Technology. The students in Senior School have continued to participate in Workplace Learning, VET and ASDAN programs that focus on building employability skills as our students begin to prepare to transition to life beyond school. There were many students who successfully completed Certificate courses.

I would like to extend my congratulations to all of the students here at Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre on their varied and many achievements in 2017. I would also like to acknowledge and sincerely thank all of the staff here at Belridge Secondary ESC for their continued enthusiastic and dedicated approach and they are to be congratulated on making a difference to the lives of our students.

Jenine WallBelridge Secondary ESC Principal

As always, the focus of the Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre Board was on our students, and ensuring they have access to the best educational opportunities we can provide. The School Board structure and membership now includes four parent representatives, two community representatives and two staff members in addition to the Principal. The Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre Board continued to meet regularly to participate in establishing and reviewing school priorities, student progress and achievement, general policy directions and financial arrangements, approval of contributions and charges, and evaluation of school performance in 2017.

Mrs Wendy Langford has been the School Board Chair since 2014 and due to family commitments formally resigned as School Chair Board and opting to remain as a parent representative. Mrs Jo Waterman was nominated as School Board Chair and was welcomed into this role and was ably supported by Wendy during this transition process. As always there are School Board Members who inevitably need to move on and we acknowledge and thank those who have generously donated their time and commitment to the enhancement of education here at Belridge Secondary ESC. We look forward to continuing to support the school in future initiatives.

Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre is co-located with Belridge Secondary College and the two schools work alongside each other to provide the best educational opportunities and experiences for all students. Facilities such as the canteen, school oval and the library are accessible for our students. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are able to access specialist teaching areas within Belridge Secondary College, such as Design and Technology , Dance, Home Economics and Music and are supported by Belridge Secondary ESC staff.

Our Education Support Centre classrooms include fourteen teaching areas, a horticulture garden, universal access toileting facilities and an Independent Living Centre with state of the art facilities. The availability of technology for all students to access is second to none with all students being provided with an individualised iPad to use at school as well as an extensive amount of computers and smart boards in each classroom. in a holistic manner through the provision of a specialised curriculum that addresses their individual needs, goals and aspirations. Our school crest and motto aligns with Belridge Secondary College of “Learn, Achieve, Succeed”. Our vision at Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre is to encourage all of our students to be life-long learners and to provide them with the best educational opportunities to achieve their individual educational needs, dreams and aspirations.

Our School Business Plan for 2017—2019 focuses on Four key areas that align with the High Performance-High Care Strategic Plan for WA Public Schools 2016—2019.

Our Priorities are:

1. Student Success

2. Excellence in Teaching

3. School Development and Wellbeing

4. Strengthening School Community Partnerships

With 15 students in Year 7 commencing their education in a secondary environment, and , they are to be congratulated on the positive and seamless manner in which they began their high school journey. Conversely our Year 12 students commenced their final year of schooling and participated in a variety of programs and activities to support their transition to life beyond school. Their graduation ceremony is always a highlight for our students who demonstrated their pride and success alongside their peers from Belridge Secondary College.

Once again Joondalup Resort was the perfect venue for the 2017 Year Twelve Graduation Ceremony. The Lakeview Ballroom was filled to the brim with proud parents, family members, mentors and school staff to celebrate the individual achievements of all Year 12 graduands from both Belridge Secondary College and Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre.

Having prepared the day before at their venue rehearsal, the students proudly embraced the occasion by wearing their graduation gowns and sashes and excitedly posing for many group photos with friends, family and staff. The BSESC students proudly lead the procession into the venue and displayed positive and mature attitudes throughout the night. All of our graduands should be proud of their achievements based on their ASDAN and/or their Certificate I and Certificate II attainments.

Congratulations to the recipients of our Special Awards:

City of Joondalup Citizenship Award – Samuel Rowan

School Overview

Student Enrolments

Belridge Secondary ESC (BSESC) is a purpose built government Independent Public School (IPS) catering for students with special educational needs in Years 7-12.

In 2017 our maximum enrolment was 107 students.

Priority One: Student Success

Data collection is based on the progress of each individual student and their unique level of development. Teachers make judgements based on pre and post assessments as it is inappropriate to compare student progress against specified benchmarks or chronological aged student achievements. Students may participate in standardised testing in Reading, Spelling and Mathematics to inform student planning. Individual student goals and outcomes are discussed collaboratively with parents and carers and student progress is reported on each semester.

The Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre Business Plan identified a number of targets and strategies aimed at further developing Student Success which include; improving student achievement in Literacy and Numeracy and supporting families to increase the attendance rate of students identified at risk.

Improving students individual Literacy performance was a key area in 2017 with Mrs Pauline Egan taking on the role of Literacy Co-ordinator with the aim of establishing a cohesive and sequential school wide approach to the teaching of English Literacy. A Literacy Committee was established with representatives from Middle and Senior phases of schooling which addressed professional engagement , programs, Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) and resources required. Mrs Egan provided Professional development on the use of the ‘Multi-Lit’ Reading program which was used in Years 7 to 10. This program will continue in 2018 and a range of student achievement data will be collected to track individual student achievement and progress. A range of techniques and strategies are utilised to address student Literacy needs and these included : 4 Blocks Literacy, Reading Fluency, Functional Literacy Skills and ASDAN modules and Certificate Courses in the Senior phases of schooling.

Functional Mathematics continues to be a core component of addressing student outcomes and this also overarched into all learning areas. Mrs Kelsey Collins ordered Mathematics resources for use across the school in all phases of learning

teams and collaborated with Senior school staff to create a sequential Maths program in Years 10, 11 and 12 with explicit links to the Australian Curriculum that aligns with the courses and programs such as ASDAN Money Progression and Money Smart programs utilised at Belridge Secondary ESC. Further resources, strategies and supports will be explored to support functional numerical development.

Each student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Individual Transition Plan (ITP) that is developed in consultation with parents, teachers and therapists as required. These plans identify the prioritised objectives and form the basis for reporting student progress. All Individual Plans address student needs and informs future planning that clearly demonstrates student achievement and progression. The following tables and graphs demonstrate the achievement level of our students in Literacy and Numeracy with over 80% of all individual student outcomes achieved in both English and Mathematics in Semesters One and Two. The graphs demonstrate the progression and attainment of IEP goals in Semester One and Semester Two for Years 7–12 and are divided into each Year cohort. This data is collated through a rigorous process of collating individual student achievement and the number of objectives are identified in each graph. The tables identify the total number of students in each year level and demonstrate the level of improvement that has occurred during the course of the year. The following graphs identify the number of objectives that have been achieved by students in the areas identified within the School Business Plan and clearly demonstrates the progress that students are making against their identified individual goals.

The graphs below indicate the attendance summary of students who attended our school in 2017. It is important to recognise that some of our students may be absent from school for valid reasons such as medical conditions, appointments, therapy or respite. The number of authorised versus unauthorised absences are also represented and this includes students attending educational activities off the school site such

as therapy and Upper school independent transition programs. The school collaborates and consults with parents whose children’s attendance rates are cause for concern and the school attendance remains comparable with other WA Public Schools in 2017 and that the interpretation of data with schools with a smaller student population should be interpreted with caution.

All staff at Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre strive for excellence and school priorities support the Department of Education High Performance-High Care Strategic Plan for WA Public Schools 2016 – 2019. Focus areas identified by teaching staff in the 2017—2019 Business Plan were:

• The implementation of the Digital Technologies curriculum

• Teaching staff engaging in a whole school reflective practice model based on the AITSL standards

• The development of a whole school professional learning plan with explicit links to school priorities

In line with Curriculum expectations, all schools are required to implement the Digital technology curriculum and report on student progress in this Learning Area in 2018. Subsequently Digital technology is a priority area as it provides a platform for innovation to provide our students with knowledge, understanding and skills in our increasingly technology reliant society. In 2017 Ms Helen Carlyon taught Digital technologies across all year levels and participated in a range

of Professional Development opportunities to strengthen knowledge within the school and this will be extended in 2018. A significant amount of resources were purchased to support this Learning Area and further consideration to learning opportunities will be considered in 2018 and beyond.

Teaching staff Performance Development is explicitly linked to the AITSL standards, School and Professional Development as well as school priorities with further consistent Peer Review and Reflective practices continuing to be implemented in 2018. A whole school approach to staff development is being utilised to ensure a consistent approach to school priorities that includes teaching and non-teaching staff. This will be further refined and implemented into the 2018 school year.

Priority Three: School Development and Wellbeing

Behaviour and Wellbeing of students and staff was identified as a focus and the development of a whole school common behaviour approach and philosophy through the implementation of the Positive Behaviours in Schools Program (PBiS) began in 2017.

The administrative leadership team met with School of Special Educational Needs, Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN-BE) to develop further awareness of the implementation process, training and support that is required for the successful implementation of PBiS. It is anticipated that the full implementation of PBiS will occur in 2020 and the school community is extremely supportive of this project being implemented.

In Term 4, SECCA , a non profit organisation designed to support people with disabilities to learn about human relationships were invited into the school to work with our classes. The consultancy service enabled trained specialist staff to address Protective Behaviours and human relationships appropriate to the needs of our students at a class level. These sessions operated for four weeks and enabled a specific targeted approach to furthering protective behaviour education which continues to be a priority for our students.

The provision of career progression and leadership opportunities for aspirant teachers was identified as being

a focus for future school staff development. Accordingly teaching staff were offered the opportunity to join the aspirants program being run through the Joondalup Learning Community. A number of classroom teaching staff took on leadership roles within the school; as co-ordinators in specific curriculum areas: Mrs Pauline Egan –Literacy, Mrs Nichola Manship-AAC, Ms Emma Reed—Year 7 transition and Mrs Kelsey Collins-Numeracy. Additionally Mr Tom Cann has been our JLC Network Liaison Officer for a number of years and Mrs Carmen Lopez did an outstanding job of being our Market Day co-ordinator.

There are a number of events, excursions and incursions that occur throughout the school year and subsequently, there were many teachers who were cost centre managers, project and event leaders and to all of them, a very special thank you!

Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre continues to have an outstanding relationship with many educational and Community service providers.

Our Year 7 transition Program has gone from strength to strength with a record number of Year 7 students attending transition in 2017. Twenty Eight students attended these planned transition activities and a recent survey regarding the success of the 2017 program was sent to parents. Of the surveys sent, 75% of parents responded with a 100% satisfaction rate expressed by parents. Samples of parental thoughts and responses were:

• “My boys had a better understanding of what was expected, familiar with environment and staff. All concerned were less anxious. Fantastic transition program”.

• “My child loved the transition days at High School. She made a smooth move into High School this year”

The relationship between the school and community work environments and service providers is testament to the opportunities that are provided for our students. Our Workplace Learning and Vocational Education Training (VET) programs, under the leadership of our VET/WPL Co-ordinator, Jenny Winston, continued to provide amazing opportunities for our students to generalise their knowledge and skills into the broader community whilst preparing our young adults for life beyond school. The range of programs and opportunities that occur

here at Belridge Secondary ESC is rich and diverse with a future focussed direction providing opportunities that are delivered on and off the school site. Students participate in courses that increase employability skills, confidence and knowledge in all areas of beyond school life. Some students attend courses off the school site in collaboration with their parents/carers on an individual basis. In 2017, students had opportunities to access a rich array of courses which are intended to develop their potential skill sets. All students in Year 10-12 completed VET programs, including Certificate courses as well as Workplace learning. Two of our Graduating Year 12 students achieved two Certificate II’s in Building and Construction Pathways and Skills for Work & Vocational Pathways in 2017. Congratulations to Robbie and Kevin on their achievements. School success was celebrated in the broader community with a Focus on Ability Film Festival entry submitted by Mrs Carmen Lopez and Mrs Kelsey Collins entitled “Cooking For Life”. This short feature film highlighted the abilities of our students as well as the teaching expertise of all staff here at BSESC. Mrs Lopez also created a ‘School of the Year” entry for the WAESPAA annual awards night.

Thank you to the staff involved and we look forward to further entries acknowledging the work of all staff.

Mrs Olivia Bril (Deputy Principal) and our School Chaplains (Bev Fruin and Alison Dee) were responsible for the Student Council in 2017. The Student Council is an important program at Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre and encourages leadership potential, morals, values and ethics at a school level. All students are encouraged to participate in the student council election process and each councillor is elected by their class peer group. The council consists of ten Student Councillors with two representatives from each year group as well as the school Chaplain and a Deputy Principal. The Student Council election occurred in Term 1 after the teachers had discussed the election process and the roles and responsibilities of being

a Student Councillor with their respective class groups. The elected councillors attended an induction event where they signed their Student Councillor Contract and received their Student Councillor badge. The Student Councillors participated in many awareness raising charity collections including blankets for the RSPCA and toiletry items for Homeless Refuges. As role models to their peers Student Councillors make a significant contribution in creating and maintaining a safe and friendly environment for the school community.
