Pea Pods for Preschoolers provides the opportunity for you and your special little one to experience the enchantment of the plant world. Positive interactions with the natural world are an important part of healthy child development and such interactions enhance learning and quality of life over the span of one’s lifetime. Developing this wonder in the early years focuses primarily on young children exploring and enjoying the world of nature under the guidance and with the companionship of caring adults.

Pea Pods for Preschoolers provides the opportunity for you and your special little one to experience the enchantment of the plant world. Weekly themes delight the young learner through planting, art, sensory and science discovery, action, music, story time, snack and outdoor/greenhouse adventures. Come play and learn about nature!

Some plants are airborne only as seeds, and some spend their entire lives 200 feet in the air! Examine the ways that plants use the air, from breathing to fl ying to pollination. Experiment

with seed propulsion by catapult and parachute, use the sun to cook a snack, and bring home special air-loving plants. Combine this camp with “Dirt Detectives” and the “Supervised

Lunch” for a full-day option.

Garden Chefs will take their weekly garden harvest and create a garden lunch in the Harvest Kitchen. From seed to table, Garden Chefs will be involved in every aspect of growing their own lunch. Garden Chefs will create new recipes and also explore how to add their garden harvest to their favorite lunch recipes.

Escape from winter for a desert adventure in our warm greenhouse. See the spikes, spines, and inside of a cactus larger than life through our Scope-on-a-Rope. Munch on edible cactus and savor sweet agave syrup while you invent a survival adaptation. Before you go, pot up your own succulent plant to keep on your windowsill all winter long.

Discover how you can tell trees apart even without their leaves. Tree shape, buds, fruit, seeds or cones can clue you in to who’s in the forest. Plant a tree and create art from bark and twigs to take home with you.

In the plant word it is time to begin! How do seeds turn into sprouts? Let’s look in a microscope at shoots with baby leaves and roots. Prepare a sprout snack in the Harvest

Kitchen, design seed pictures, and plant seeds to take home and watch as they sprout and grow.

SQUISH OF SPRING Saturdays and Sundays in April 2011, Noon-4 p.m.

Mother Earth is in her kitchen preparing good soil to feed her plant family. Use her soggy, squishy, spring soil to make a great mud pie. Th en decorate it with garden gleanings. Watch

worms compost trash to help Mother Earth turn it into a garden resource. Celebrate Earth day at the Arboretum on April 23 and take home a native prairie plant while supplies last.

BLOOMING BASKETS Saturdays and Sundays in May 2011, Noon-4 p.m.

Weave your own May basket and plant a spring fl ower to take home with you. Explore the greenhouse in search of fi ber producing plants that can be used to make clothing, paper, rope, and more. Feel downy soft cotton, tough coconut husks, and silky soft ramie.

ROOT ROAST Saturdays and Sundays in June 2011, Noon-4 p.m.

Bake a delicious roasted root snack in the Harvest Kitchen. View roots up close through our Scope-on-a-Rope and peek through root viewers. Search the greenhouse for plants grown for their root crops, take part in a root experiment, and create art with roots.

GUIDED ADVENTURESGuided Adventures are perfect for daycare, scout, summer school or neighborhood groups wanting extra hands-on fun during an Arboretum visit. Each Guided Adventure lasts one hour. For groups of 10-50 children ages 3-12.

Available Mondays and Tuesdays, June 13 - August 2, at 9-10 am, 11am-12noon, 1-2pm FEE: $5.00/child. Call 952-443-1422 to register.

Follow the path of the Little Red Hen as she plants wheat, mills the grain, and bakes delicious bread. Learn how plants grow as you plant your own wheat garden. Th en grind seeds into fl our and shape some dough. Bake fresh bread and enjoy a puppet show.

What would it be like to taste with your feet or fl y upside down? Discover the amazing lives of butterfl ies and hummingbirds, our most colorful garden visitors. Learn how fast a hummingbird fl aps its wings, how a caterpillar changes into a butterfl y, and which fl owers these winged creatures prefer. Pot a plant to attract hummingbirds and butterfl ies to your garden at home.
