FOREWORD

Cornell University for more than 40 years has provided op-portunity and encouragement to cooperative extension personnel andother adult educators to improve their professional competency. This concern was formalized :in the Cornell Graduate School in1948 by the pioneering establishment of a full-fledged graduate studycurriculum leading to both the Master of Science and Doctor of Phil-osophy Degrees with specialization in Extension and Adult Education.

Since the beginning of this new opportunity for advanced studyat Cornell, more than 400 administrators, supervisors and special-ists in extension, community development and other adult educationendeavors have enrolled in the Graduate School for study in this fieldof specialization. More than 300 of them completed all reauirements, including a dissertation, and were awarded a graduate degree -- 82have earned the Doctorate and 219 the Master's Degree.

These scholars came from nearly every state in the UnitedStates and from more than 40 countries abroad. They have been con-tinuously employed in leadership positions in colleges, universities, government ministries, extension and community development systemsand other continuing education agencies. The dissertations completedby these Cornell Extension and Adult Education Alumni are listed hereand are catalogued in the Cornell University Libraries.

We have prepared this list of researches in the hope that it mayextend the availability of this extensive body of scientific literature.Interested persons may use copies of the dissertations in the Mann orOlin Libraries at Cornell University. Microfilm copies of doctoraldissertations from 1954 to date may be purchased for a small chargefrom University Microfilms, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Limited informa-tion may be found in Dissertation Abstracts, available in most univer-sity and college libraries. Loan of other theses may be requested,or microfilm copies purchased by addressing Cornell University Li-braries, Inter-Library Service, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.

INDEX

The 301 dissertations included in this listing are indexedfor the user's convenience under nine general topics. But becausethe content in many of the -researches has relevance to topicsother than its major subject, much overlapping exists in the clas-sification./ Consequently, readers should depend primarily on thetitle of the dissertation in selecting material of interest to them.

Cornell University Library catalogue numbers are stated inparentheses following the title of each dissertation in the listing. The symbols associated with some index numbers in the classifi-cation indicate:
