Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE BOOK OF REVELATION Read by Gary Davenport After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated

on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” REVELA TION 7:9–17 The word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. PSALM 24: 1-6 (Please remain seated for the psalm.)

The earth is the LORD’S and all that is in it, * the world and all who dwell there-in. For it is he who founded it upon the seas * and made it firm upon the ri-vers of the deep. “Who can ascend the hill of the LORD? * and who can stand in his ho-ly place?” “Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood nor sworn by what is a fraud. They shall receive a blessing from the Lord * and a just reward from the God of their sal-va-tion.” Such is the generation of those who seek him, * of those who seek your face, O God of Ja-cob.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: World with-out end A-men.

A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF JOHN Read by Sheila Cram See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. 1 JOHN 3:1–3 The word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. Gospel Alleluia Choir: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia Cantor: They are before the throne of God: and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia Gospeller: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

according to Matthew. All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice

and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” MATTHEW 5:1–12 Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ: All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Homily: Fr Jonathan Eayrs Affirmation of Faith (Please stand as able.) The Nicene Creed p. 188 Prayers of the People led by Rev. Grace Caldwell-Hill (Please kneel, as able, for the Prayers of the People) Prayer of Confession Most merciful God we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, Have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Absolution The Exchange of the Peace (We greet and exchange the Peace of Christ with our neighbours.)

The Celebration of the Eucharist All who are baptized into Christ with water in the Name of the Holy Trinity are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you

will not be receiving, you are invited to come to the Communion rail for a blessing. Please indicate this by crossing your arms.

Offertory Hymn 275 “O what their joy” (O Quanta Qualia) (During this hymn the gifts of bread and wine are presented and a collection is taken up.)

Please be seated for the anthem. Anthem: And I Saw a New Heaven – Edgar Bainton (1880-1956)

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there

was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride

adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall

be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying,

neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Prayer over the Gifts: Holy and mighty God, we give you thanks for the triumph of Christ in the lives of all his saints. Receive all we offer you this day, and help us, like them, to run our course with faith, that we may come to your eternal kingdom. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Eucharistic Prayer 3 p. 198

The Lord’s Prayer (sung) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil, For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider: We break this bread to share in the body of

Christ. All: We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Communion Hymn 286 “Give me the wings of faith” (Westminster) Doxology (All stand as able) Presider: All your works praise you, O Lord., All: And your faithful servants bless you. Gracious God we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live his risen life; we, who drink this cup, bring life to others; we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; Through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing

Perhaps his most famous piece is the liturgical anthem “And I saw a new heaven”, but during recent years Bainton's other musical works–neglected for decades–have been increasingly heard in the concert repertoire. In the early 1930s Bainton did lecture tours to Canada and in the summer of 1933 the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music offered him its directorship. Accordingly, in 1934 Bainton and his family started a new life in Australia where, for the next 20+ years he taught and conducted. In 1956 a heart attack severely affected his health - his wife had died not long beforehand - and on the morning of 8 December he died on the beach at Point Piper in Sydney.
