My specific research topics is the development of affordable and reliable models using
supervised machine learning methods focused on Hispanic population (specifically Puerto
Ricans) in order to predict patient outcomes using physiological data; and
predict disease diagnostic and treatment response combining ancestry information,
genome variants, clinical and phenotypic data.

My research interests involve identification, characterization and validation of biomarkers
of malaria severity in sickle cell disease to guide the discovery of new diagnostics,
prognostics and drug targets. The impact of this research is immense and will benefit both
malaria and sickle cell patients. I am also involved in research in woman's health and
disparities. My research goal is to find a non-invasive method for early diagnosis of
endometriosis.
Adrienne Dillard, PhD, MSW, LSW

My research uses a CBPR approach to implement and evaluate a culturally adapted,
evidence-based intervention to improve cardiometabolic health in Hawaiian homestead
communities. I am also working to build community capacity for future CBPR projects via a
series of Research 101 workshops.
Althea Campuzano, PhD/MD
Researcher
Microbiology University of Texas at San Antonio
LEADS Cohort: 2020
My research involves studying host immune response to fungal infections, particularly on
the pathogenic Coccidioides spp. or Valley Fever, as well as Cryptococcus neoformans,
an opportunistic fungal pathogen. I am currently working on developing an in vitro model
in order to study the efficacy of our subunit vaccine (GCP-rCpa1) against Coccidioides
and identify promiscuous epitopes recognized by CD4+ T cells. In order to test the efficacy
of our vaccine against other clinically relevant species, I am studying the efficacy of our
subunit vaccine in various murine model systems including HLA-DR transgenic mice. These
studies will help us understand how to better develop an effective vaccine against fungal
organisms.

My research seeks to understand brain developmental processes and identify health
disparities and support the needs of the local Autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) community.
My work involved dissecting the influence of genetic and environmental factors during
embryonic brain development, characterizing early deviations in at-risk populations for
Autism-spectrum disorder (ASD), and promoting research capacity building in PR in the
field of Neuroimaging.

My primary research interest is in the area of health service research in particular patient
(cont’d)
and provider relationships within the African American/ Black community as it related to
African Americans or Black America's health outcomes. I am interested in exploring issues
of racial discrimination and bias in the healthcare setting. I would like to conduct quality
improvement projects to understand and reduce health disparities among the Black
community and other vulnerable patient populations.

The main goal of my research is to develop evidence-based Suboxone dosing for
Hispanics/Latino men and women to improve its pharmacological efficacy in treating
opioid addiction. I have discovered based on published data that there is a gap between
the pharmacology of Suboxone and its efficacy when treating Hispanics and Latinos, but
most importantly within Hispanic/Latino men and women of Puerto Rican nationality.

My research interests include identifying and characterizing bioactive components (e.g.,
antioxidants and pigments) from food, and understanding potential absorption of these
nutrients and components in humans. I am also working to develop strategies to enhance
stability and/or absorption of these compounds with colloidal systems (micro and

My colleagues and I are studying the pharmacogenetic variants that determine a
patient’s response to buprenorphine. By measuring the plasma levels of buprenorphine
and treatment outcomes for patients being treated for opioid use disorder, we will
describe the association between these clinical outcomes and a patient’s individual
genetic makeup. Ultimately, this research will help us develop individualized, personalized
medicine approaches to the treatment of opioid use disorder.

LEADS Cohort: 2017
My vision is to create and lead the advancement of health equity for African American
fathers. Despite research evidence that demonstrates the positive outcomes for families
and communities when fathers are engaged/involved, African American fathers are still
largely overlooked and underserved. My research focuses on examining the unique service
needs of African American fathers and strategies to engage them in services, specifically
within health & human services’ female-dominated workforce.
Lecia Robinson, PhD/MD
Assistant Professor
Department of Biology

LEADS Cohort: 2020
Health disparities exist among women that are suffering with Breast cancer. Evidence
suggests that most chemotherapeutic agents are less effective as treatment in patients
with more aggressive estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) breast carcinomas as compared to
those with estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast carcinomas. Moreover, African
American Women (AAW) are more likely to be diagnosed with ER- varieties that are larger
and later staged tumors as compared to their white counterparts. My research aims to use
bioinformatics analysis of mitotic gene/protein expression to identify commonalities and
divergences in breast tissue samples.

My research is health disparities driven on the special topic of cardio-metabolic diagnostic
and therapeutic precision medicine and technology development. I focus on identifying
novel bio-markers that associate with PCSK9 with an effort to utilize them as therapeutic
and/or diagnostic targets for African American based health disparities. I primarily focus on
health disparity research in the area of cholesterol metabolism, I evaluate the off target
affects in patients with undefined genetic variants treated by general practice.

LEADS Cohort: 2020
My research is focused on reducing risk factors for chronic diseases, in particular
overweight and obesity, through the use of technology. The technology would be a
smartphone app or text messages to help with dietary behavior change. The target
population would be underserved individuals in Washington, DC. One proposed venue to
reach these individuals would be faith-based organizations.
Tilicia Mayo-Gamble, PhD., MPH, MA
Assistant Professor
Department of Community Health
Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health Georgia Southern University
LEADS Cohort: 2017
My research agenda focuses on implementing community engagement methods to
facilitate self-care behaviors and enhance patient-centered care in adults with sickle cell
disease. I am currently implementing a feasibility study to integrate community health
workers into a sickle cell patient-centered chronic care team to enhance care
coordination and facilitate self-care behaviors. Implementing a community-based model
as a method of engagement and extension of care offers a targeted approach to
meeting client needs and holds promise to create the underpinnings for a scalable model
for coordinated patient-centered care.
Tongde Wu, PhD, MS
