supervised machine learning methods focused on Hispanic population (specifically Puerto

Ricans) in order to predict patient outcomes using physiological data; and

predict disease diagnostic and treatment response combining ancestry information,

genome variants, clinical and phenotypic data.

My research interests involve identification, characterization and validation of biomarkers

of malaria severity in sickle cell disease to guide the discovery of new diagnostics,

prognostics and drug targets. The impact of this research is immense and will benefit both

malaria and sickle cell patients. I am also involved in research in woman's health and

disparities. My research goal is to find a non-invasive method for early diagnosis of

endometriosis.

evidence-based intervention to improve cardiometabolic health in Hawaiian homestead

communities. I am also working to build community capacity for future CBPR projects via a

series of Research 101 workshops.

My research involves studying host immune response to fungal infections, particularly on

the pathogenic Coccidioides spp. or Valley Fever, as well as Cryptococcus neoformans,

an opportunistic fungal pathogen. I am currently working on developing an in vitro model

in order to study the efficacy of our subunit vaccine (GCP-rCpa1) against Coccidioides

and identify promiscuous epitopes recognized by CD4+ T cells. In order to test the efficacy

of our vaccine against other clinically relevant species, I am studying the efficacy of our

subunit vaccine in various murine model systems including HLA-DR transgenic mice. These

studies will help us understand how to better develop an effective vaccine against fungal

organisms.

My work involved dissecting the influence of genetic and environmental factors during

embryonic brain development, characterizing early deviations in at-risk populations for

Autism-spectrum disorder (ASD), and promoting research capacity building in PR in the

field of Neuroimaging.

mental health disparities.

Hispanics/Latino men and women to improve its pharmacological efficacy in treating

opioid addiction. I have discovered based on published data that there is a gap between

the pharmacology of Suboxone and its efficacy when treating Hispanics and Latinos, but

most importantly within Hispanic/Latino men and women of Puerto Rican nationality.

My colleagues and I are studying the pharmacogenetic variants that determine a

patient’s response to buprenorphine. By measuring the plasma levels of buprenorphine

and treatment outcomes for patients being treated for opioid use disorder, we will

describe the association between these clinical outcomes and a patient’s individual

genetic makeup. Ultimately, this research will help us develop individualized, personalized

medicine approaches to the treatment of opioid use disorder.

fathers. Despite research evidence that demonstrates the positive outcomes for families

and communities when fathers are engaged/involved, African American fathers are still

largely overlooked and underserved. My research focuses on examining the unique service

needs of African American fathers and strategies to engage them in services, specifically

within health & human services’ female-dominated workforce.

Health disparities exist among women that are suffering with Breast cancer. Evidence

suggests that most chemotherapeutic agents are less effective as treatment in patients

with more aggressive estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) breast carcinomas as compared to

those with estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast carcinomas. Moreover, African

American Women (AAW) are more likely to be diagnosed with ER- varieties that are larger

and later staged tumors as compared to their white counterparts. My research aims to use

bioinformatics analysis of mitotic gene/protein expression to identify commonalities and

divergences in breast tissue samples.

health disparity research in the area of cholesterol metabolism, I evaluate the off target

facilitate self-care behaviors and enhance patient-centered care in adults with sickle cell

disease. I am currently implementing a feasibility study to integrate community health

workers into a sickle cell patient-centered chronic care team to enhance care

coordination and facilitate self-care behaviors. Implementing a community-based model

as a method of engagement and extension of care offers a targeted approach to

meeting client needs and holds promise to create the underpinnings for a scalable model

for coordinated patient-centered care.
