Dear People of St Paul’s,

…continued on page 2

In our last newsletter I promised to write about the Season after Pentecost – otherwise known as Ordinary time. I found this wonderful article by Dennis Bratcher who explains this season so well.

Ordinary time happens twice during the year - following Epiphany and following Pentecost. Rather than meaning "common" or "mundane," this term comes from the word "ordinal," which simply means counted time (First Sunday after Pentecost, etc.), which is probably a better way to think of this time of the year. Counted time after Pentecost always begins with Trinity Sunday (the first Sunday after Pentecost) and ends with Christ the King Sunday or the Reign of Christ the King (last Sunday before the beginning of Advent).

Many Protestant church traditions consider the Sundays following Epiphany a season of Epiphany that runs until the beginning of Lent. Those traditions that follow the Roman Catholic calendar only count January 6th as Epiphany and do not think of a season of Epiphany, so consider the Sundays following part of Ordinary Time. In either case, the Sundays after Epiphany are counted (1st Sunday after Epiphany, etc.) so technically are Ordinary Time. However in most Protestant churches Ordinary Time usually refers to the Sundays after Pentecost Sunday and before the beginning of Advent.

Here are excerpts from his article entitled, “Ordinary Time, Counted Time of the Church Year”

The 33 or 34 Sundays of Ordinary Time after Pentecost (23 to 28 Sundays after Pentecost) are used to focus on various aspects of the Faith, especially the mission of the church in the world. The Bible readings for these Sundays tend to be semi-continuous readings through certain sections of Scripture, especially through the Gospel of the year (this year being Matthew).

The sanctuary colour for Ordinary Time is dark green, although other shades of green are commonly used. Green has traditionally been associated with new life and growth. Even in Hebrew in the Old Testament, the same word for the color "green" also means "young." In Christian tradition, green came to symbolize the life of the church following Pentecost, as well as symbolizing the hope of new life in the resurrection. It is also a time to grow our faith.

The season of Pentecost usually focuses on the evangelical mission of the church to the world (joining in where God is already at work in the world around us) and its responsibility in carrying out that mission. This emphasis often extends into Ordinary Time. Some Protestant churches also celebrate Reformation Sunday (end of October) and All Saints Sunday (first Sunday in November). These are ways to flesh out the themes of the Church in the World during Ordinary Time by focusing on heritage and the faithfulness of those in the past.

There was no democracy; the Emperor ruled. When the ruler was wise and kind, things went well.  When the ruler was arrogant and out of touch things went downhill and the ruler was sometimes killed or there was a revolt.  It seemed to me there is an important lesson here as we celebrate Canada Day and our nation's 150 years.   We live in a democratic society which means the people get to decide how their life together should be organized.   We usually do this by electing people who will do the donkey work of governing, keeping in mind that we have told them what we want.   Governments are not always good at this and so as we celebrate our history we will keep a watchful eye on how the government has done over the years and to-day.  When we all get off track very bad things can happen.  Societies can lose their way and there is a long list of once great nations.   We pray for our nation's continuing prosperity, happiness and security. In my experience churches tend to be a bit behind in terms of democracy. The lesson of Pentecost is that the Spirit is given to all members of the body of Christ.  This is a very democratic action and suggests we should each listen to one another, reach a consensus or at least a vote when something important is up for decision.  We should avoid giving decision-making authority to one person because we all have the wisdom and guidance of the Spirit.  This is the meaning of the picture of the "body of Christ" in Romans 12:3 - 8 and also First Corinthians 12.As we enjoy our time out this summer we might ponder some of these things and bring our reflections to church in the fall.  May God grant us all a safe summer and a thankful one.

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR ROD

The other evening I watched a TV program on the history of China.  China is the world’s oldest culture and in the 16th century had the world's largest economy.  They had some wise rulers and some not so wise.

In case of a pastoral emergency you may call the church cell phone at

780-717-5241.

If you or someone you care about would appreciate a pastoral visit at any time, please give Pastor Heidi or Pastor Rod a call at

NEWS ABOUT LITTLE BLESSINGS CHRISTIAN PRESCHOOL (LBCP)

J-Walkers Continuous Bottle Drive

If you have any bottles, cans or milk cartons you are able to donate to our YOUTH fundraiser, please bring them to the Church. Our youth can even unload them for you.

The Youth are fundraising for the CLAY National Youth Gathering in Thunder Bay Summer of 2018 Please contact Tammy for more info.

Over the past months there have been numerous meetings and communication between LBCP and St Paul’s Church Council. It seems over the past number of years there has been miscommunication with all involved, along with misunderstandings of responsibility. Church Council and Pastor Heidi have apologized for not recognizing their role in this. There were things lost in the transitions between pastors (James and Heidi) and this among some other things has led to the resignation of the teachers, administrator and the board.

We wish to thank all who have worked so hard for this wonderful outreach ministry, especially the lead teacher Lori Atkin, who developed a well respected program, the education assistant Susan Buchanan Smith, administrator Michelle Oswald, all of the board members and volunteers. We appreciate the positive work you have done. It is now time to move forward. So we look forward to September with a fresh start - learning from the past and moving positively into the future, always listening for where God is leading. LBCP will continue this fall. Council is looking to fill positions on the board along with hiring new staff. We already have some people willing to serve on the committee for Little Blessings. We’re changing the word “board” to “committee to help with roles and understanding. We ask for your prayers and support as we continue with this Christ-centered outreach ministry of St Paul’s.

If you or anyone you know is interested in the vacant positions of teacher, teacher’s aid or administrator of Little Blessings Christian Preschool please submit your resume to Heather Shaw, Council Chair at [email protected]

COUNCIL CORNER Highlights from June 20, 2017 Meeting

• Council is meeting with members of the Preschool board and staff on June 27th to listen to LBCP and to determine staffing for the fall of 2017. The Administrator, Michelle Oswald, is resigning her position and a new administrator for LBCP is needed.

• A GIC St. Paul’s holds has come due. Council voted to reinvest it for the church for 18 months at Servus. Nancy Kadatz suggested a breakdown of monthly offerings be put in the Toolkit to show Current, Benevolent and Building Fund offerings separately. Council members agreed.

• Council is seeking a person from the congregation to volunteer to input offerings.

• Heather Shaw is investigating an electronic pay system for LBCP with Chase Banking.

• Council is seeking the identity of the congregation member who currently uses envelope #36.

• Elona Nessel asked Nancy Kadatz to investigate if the Treasurer and Financial Secretary need to be bonded as indicated in the Alternate Model Constitution #1. An Article of that constitution indicates they should be. After speaking with Assistant to the Bishop, Pastor Julianne Barlow, Nancy was assured that this section does not have a significant bearing on the Constitutional Change council proposed. All proposed changes to Church constitutions must be approved by the Synod Constitution Committee before becoming part of a church constitution. St. Paul’s has several safeguards in place to alleviate the need for bonding.

• Council will be reviewing fees for weddings, funerals and recitals.

• Inventory of items at St. Paul’s is ongoing by the maintenance committee.

• Pastor Heidi asked that council members come up with a list of duties for a time and talent sheet. It will be made available to members to sign up for a range of duties currently needed by St. Paul’s.

• Thirteen new members were received at St. Paul’s this month. Pastor Heidi attended a conference in Calgary for Women in Ministry, May 29, 30, and 31. Pastor Heidi and Pastor Rod continue to make home, hospital and communion visits to congregation members.

• The Facilities Task Force is awaiting an estimate on the renovation costs of the current church building from Frank Hilbich, Architect, and Chell Yee, Engineer

• Offering for month of June:                Total Current: $11,656 Total Benevolence: $1,403.00 Total Building Fund: $491.00

Gift Cards are now a “Building Fund”

Fund Raiser What is FundScrip?

Fundscrip is a fundraising program that lets you earn cash rebates for “St. Paul’s Building Fund” based on things you buy everyday like groceries, gas and other household items. All you have to do is pay for some or all of your purchases using GIFT CARDS bought at face value and a percentage of every gift card purchased is contributed to “St. Paul’s Building Fund” efforts. So instead of paying with cash or a debit card, you use a gift card that you purchased through our group. It costs you nothing extra but you earn money for the “St. Paul’s Building Fund”. When can I order? We will place our Fundscrip order the 2nd Sunday of each month. Please pick up your order forms at the front of the church or contact Nancy Kelly or Tammy Kirkwood with any questions or concerns. How often can I order? We will be placing orders the 2nd Sunday of every month.

Next orders are July 9 & August 13, 2017. Cards will be in on July 16 & August 20, 2017.
