Philosophy of Leadership
In this essay I discuss my personal philosophy on leadership. Functional theorists describe leadership as a set of functions or roles that determine the directions and actions of the group illustrated in the leadership equation (Leadership=Energy+Attachment+ Direction+Execution+ Resources+ Strategies). I believe in order for a leader to be successful in leading a group he/she has to execute each of these functions.

Leadership Motivation
To explore what motivates me as a leader, I took the “Leadership Motivation Survey” in Bean (2009). The results of the survey showed I am a person-oriented leader. The characteristics of a person-oriented leader is charismatic, great motivator and communicator that focuses on the needs of their followers to guarantee their satisfaction.
Leadership Role Profile
I took the “Leadership Role Profile” in Bean (2009) and explored the kinds of leadership roles I preferred to use as a leader. The roles I identified most with was motivator and mentor roles. I like the idea of being a motivator and a mentor because I can guide and help people reach their full potential in their endeavors.
Analyzing My Self Presentation: Warm, Optimistic, and Ethical
In this essay I discuss the importance of self presentation and how I am perceived by my peers.Goleman (2006) suggests leaders that can gauge are good at self-monitoring their impact on others get feedback, and stay in tune with their own inner processes.Effective feedback is valuable in evaluating one’s self image and their leadership style. In this leadership exercise I asked three peers to give me honest feedback on my self presentation. I learned I was an ethical, person who possess a « can-do attitude. However, I need to be more assertive and less passive.

What Can I do to Persuade you? In this essay, I explore the art of persuasion. In Goleman’s theory on social emotional intelligence, an effective leader shows good political skills such as persuasiveness (Goleman, 2006). Hakala describes leadership as one’s ability to get others to willingly follow (Hakala, 2008). I practiced my persuasion skills by giving a persuasive speech to my classmates in front of three judges to convince them to give away their spring concert tickets to me.

My Professional & Personal Code of Ethics
In this essay, I discuss the importance of establishing a professional and personal code of ethics. As a future accountant, the principle of integrity is the most important principle to follow. According to the AICPA Professional Code of Conduct section 54 article III states « to maintain and broaden public confidence, members should perform all professional responsibilities with the highest integrity ». My personal philosophy is the Golden Rule which is to treat others the way they want to be treated.

Service Project
Our mission for our service project was to raise $100 for the March of Dimes charity throughout the month of March and April and participate in the annual walk. All the proceeds were donated to the March of Dimes charity to provide prenatal care to premature babies.
Developing and Maintaining Valuable Relationships
I discuss the results of a relationship development exercise. The ability to build and maintain strong relationships is one of the four broad classes of managerial competencies (McClellard, 1973) In order to create « synergy », one has to maintain strong relationships between yourself and your people to keep everyone moving in the right direction towards a common goal (Bean, 2009). In a relationship building exercise, I asked my significant other and myself to assess the strengths and weakenesses of our relationship to make our bond stronger.
Tell Me I’m Listening
In this essay, I discuss the importance of empathetic listening. In Goleman’s theory on socio-emotional intelligence, an effective shows good emotional sensitivity by being aware of other’s emotions, identifying body language, and empathetic listening. Empathy is the ability to truly put yourself in other person’s shoes to understand how they are feeling. I practiced my empathetic listening skills in a stop and go exercise with a fellow classmate and received positive feedback on my active listening skills.

Caught in the Middle
In this essay, I describe the different mediation methods used in successful conflict management. Leaders who are good at conflict management possess the ability to maintain composure, manage emotions, and are patient (Bean, 2009). Generally leaders who possess communication, empathy, and rational persuasion skills make great conflict managers (Bean 2009). However, good listening skills are critical to assess conflict and develop creative solutions that can benefit both parties. I practiced my mediation skills in a small group and used integrative bargaining techniques to reach an agreement that satisified both parties.https://www.box.net/shared/o2v43c8s0l
