Non-Profit Spotlight United Way of Pickens United Way of Pickens County creates opportunities for everyone to live a better life by focusing on three key building blocks–education, income, and basic needs. Its mission is to mobilize the caring power of Pickens County to improve communities and individual lives in measurable and lasting ways. Three years ago, United Way took the lead to address the lack of shelter and support services for homeless families with children. They recruited the people and organizations with the passion, expertise and resources needed to get the job done. The community determined that Family Promise, an interfaith hospitality network, was the best program to address Pickens County’s homelessness needs and asked United Way of Pickens County to take the lead. Family Promise of Pickens County brings shelter, meals, and support services to families without homes. Families accepted into the program work hard every day to address the specific reasons they became homeless. The Family Promise Day Center, which is located in the Dream Center of Pickens County, will provide intensive case management, showers, laundry facilities, computer access and a place for children to play. After two years of work and countless presentations to congregations and groups, United Way of Pickens County recruited 15 host churches and 6 support churches, hired a director and anticipate serving families later this summer. 44 Years R.
