The Leadership Challenge

What is the reason that most companies are in business? To make a profit? So the question for leadership then becomes “how do you do that?”

What is the Goal?

To develop sustainable High Performance Work Teams

The Challenge is HOW?

Page 3: Leadership Development

You Need Three Things

The Managers and Leaders need to know how to do this

Page 4: Leadership Development

What Skills do They Need?

Command and Control won’t work anymore

We used to give our leaders a set of management skills. Planning, organising, control, reporting. But these are just not enough anymore. We need people with strategic thinking skills, people who can motivate NOT dominate their staff, people who can embrace change and create a strong compelling vision of the future. In short, we need LEADERS!

But just how do you develop your Managers into Leaders?

Page 5: Leadership Development

Traditionally we have sent people away on 3,4 or 5 day workshops to help them develop their Leadership skills. But most companies find this approach has little impact. Managers make an attempt to change but soon revert back to their old ways as there is no follow up or incentive to change.

The Traditional Way

Or people embark on a long term study programme such as an MBA, which apart from being very expensive, isn’t an option for most people as the time commitment is too heavy. Also they can be very academic and difficult to relate to real world of work and require a great deal of self-discipline.

The Coaching Process

Surely Change can’t be that hard!

How Easy is it to Change? Not long ago a medical study showed that if heart doctors tell their seriously at-risk heart patients they will literally die if they do not make changes to their personal lives—diet, exercise, smoking—still only one in seven is actually able to make the changes. One in seven! And we can safely assume that the other six wanted to live, see more sunsets, watch their grandchildren grow up. They didn’t lack a sense of urgency. The incentives for change could not be greater. The doctors made sure they knew just want they needed to do. Still, they couldn’t do it.
