4 types of Civic LeadersPaternalistic –
patriarchal or matriarchal style of leadership; built on established personal or kinship relationships; inspiring great loyalty and have a familial relationship with staff
Activist – engaged in lobbying work; highly motivated, charismatic, focused on single issue; inspire the followers with clear messages
Managerialist – administrative abilities; establishing structures; managing the team, setting the responsibilities
Power of VisionCatalytic/Visionary leader - Strategic leaders- Promote and implement
change- Wider world view/global
leaders- Change agents delegating
the work to the team- Work with external actors- Build coalitions,
partnershipsAre we the world?
Leaders or Managers Leaders - inspire, initiate
change, encourage new learning, create networks, developing a different culture; creating bigger picture and promoting change
Managers – plan, implement and monitor on a more operational and administrative level; mainly resolving specific issues, day to day challenges
Effective leadersMust demonstrate some managerial skills
With ABILITY (intelligence, public speaking skills)
With sociABILITY (participation, popularity)
With MOTIVATION (initiative and consistency in beliefs)
With COURAGE and DIGNITY
Leadership is a process where an individual influences a group or individuals to achieve a common goal

IntegrityLeadership is someone hard to please - It wants us to be as good as our word…- It wants our actions to match our words/values- Wow! It wants us to be true to our team
members and colleagues- Leadership wants us to create an environment
for people to work and participate….
