    Nehemiah 6:3-4 (NIV)

But they were scheming to harm

me; so I sent messengers to them

with this reply: I am carrying on a

great project and cannot go down.

Why should the work stop while Ileave it and go down to you?

Four times they sent me the same

message, and each time I gavethem the same answer.

    Nehemiah 6:3,4

I have gone BACK Why should the

work cease while I leave it and godown to you? Nehemiah, using

    discernment will not only escape

their trap; he wont even be

    distracted from his work!

    Nehemiah 6:3,4

    AS YOU GO BACK

If the enemy can distract Gods people, then he has won; if we can start

majoring on minors, and minoring on

majors, weve lost our effectiveness for

    the work of the LORD.

    Nehemiah was persistent in his

discernment; the request came fourtimes, and each time Nehemiah stood

fast and didnt fall for it.

    Nehemiah 6:3,4

    I came BACK for this!

I am doing a great work, so that I

    cannot come down. Why should

the work cease while I leave it and

go down to you? Discernmentgave Nehemiah focus; he knew

what God wanted him to be doing

and he did it. He wouldnt besidetracked by things that

sounded good, but werent of the

    LORD for him.

    Nehemiah 6:3,4

Anyone doing a work for God must

contend with a hundred differentnoble causes, and a hundred

things that might look good - and

be good - but they are not what

they are called to do at that time.

    Discernment gives us focus!

That alone is an amazing feat,

but we cant overlook the factthat the project did not go

    smoothly.

    From the very start Nehemiah

    faced severeopposition.

    Opposition by Threats- Nehemiah 4:7-8

When it was clear that progress was

being made, it enraged the enemiesfurther. They did not want hard

    evidence that they were wrong.

    Opposition by Exhaustion- Nehemiah 4:10-12

The work itself was hard, taxing the

strength of those doing the work. Butthe added pressure of knowing that

they could be attacked at any moment

was getting to them. Worse, there was

no telling from which direction the

    attack would come.

    Opposition through

    Compromise- Nehemiah 6:1-2

Nehemiahs enemies the work was nearlydone, so they sought subterfuge. Lets get

    together and talk.

Nehemiahs answer - Nehemiah 6:3-4There wasnt anything to talk about.

To give credence to the request would

    mean they had something to

    offer.

At best, it would take time away from

the labor. At worse, it was

    a trap.

    Opposition through Slander

    - Nehemiah 6:5-7The attacks become more

personal. Either you meet with us

or well tell everyone that you areplanning to rebel against the king

and have people saying you will

    be king.

    Opposition through treachery

    Opposition through treachery- Nehemiah 6:10

A man was hired to get Nehemiah into a

compromising position. He tried to get

Nehemiah to think someone was about to

assassinate him, so he should take refuge in

    the temple.

He even had someone issue a prophecy

    regarding the attempt.

    Nehemiahs response - Nehemiah 6:11-14

Why should someone, who trusts God,

hide? - Psalms 11:1In essence he is say, I rather die working

for God, than to preserve my life

    in fear - Proverbs 28:1

    COME ... LIVE INSIDE

    THE WALL!

Nehemiah is all about building a wall

    around Jerusalem right? No, only

    chapters 1-6 are about that.

The people existed for the wall in those

first few chapters. They gave their time,

talents, and treasures to make ithappen.

    COME ... LIVE INSIDE

    THE WALL!

But the remaining chapters show the wall

existing for the people. It's not about

the wall, but about what goes on insidethe wall.

The city was in ruins. They had a wall to

prevent invasion, but inside is rubble,

and they are supposed to live andworship there. But they had a grand

vision of what it could be once again

for the glory of God! (copied)

    COME ... LIVE INSIDE

    THE WALL!

In chapter 7 Nehemiah organizes the

people. He is a master administrator,

organizer, and leader. It's not enough

that they have their wall, they need

    their life back!
