He discussed with us the ways in which he may be able to support the teaching of Indonesian at LFHS. All Year 8 and 9 students were treated to an assembly full of Indonesian music, angklung instrument playing, highlighting intercultural awareness and understanding. Important events: Students finally moved in to our new STEM Centre, housing all of the Science and Maths learning on 3 September. This redeveloped and flexible space has been a real lift for all students and staff. Large classrooms, spacious laboratories, new office spaces, display areas and incredible ICT facilities auger well for the future of STEM at LFHS. The Official Opening Ceremony will occur next term on Tuesday 30 October. The Ice Factor Spectacular was held on Friday 14 September at the Hilton Hotel. Sixteen of our students from Year 8-11 attended this event under the leadership of Ms Rommi Driscoll and Ms Margie Tilbrook. This was a fundraising event run by Ms Marie Shaw QC the initiator and founder of the Ice Factor program. Our students modelled on the catwalk, acted as stage hands for a silent auction, interacted with the political and legal fraternity and importantly discussed how the Ice Factor program had supported them over their schooling journey. On 10 September the DfE Stage of Improvement report and the School Improvement Resources were launched. These will guide us to create a new LFHS School Improvement Plan 2019-2021 during the course of Term 4. All schools have also been provided with a new ICT ‘Dashboard’ providing us with detailed analysis of different data sets across our site. This includes SACE, NAPLAN, Wellbeing and Attendance information to name but a few. These will guide us in our planning for the site moving forward. Staff teams have been working together throughout the term in the Professional Learning Teams, developing curriculum and learning assessment tasks primarily focussed on Literacy strategies. The PLT work is based on systematic review of our Literacy and Numeracy achievement data, which enables teams to determine what aspects of their practice needs adjustment to accommodate the needs of our students. Recently staff shared and reviewed their work together as a whole group which clearly demonstrated the commitment and effort being applied to these important aspects of curriculum design. Recently we have been working with the three other Department secondary IBMYP Authorised schools to deepen our collaborative work as part of a local IB team. One aspect has been the need to widen our assessment moderation practices. During Week 8, the school successfully participated in its first Cross School Moderation with Roma Mitchell Secondary College. Our staff teams reviewed submitted student work samples to confirm or review assessment plus provide professional comments related to the tasks. Our work was in turn moderated by them. We envisage that planning will occur to enable us to moderate with the remaining schools next year. The Peninsula Cup was held on 21 September at OceanView College where LFHS competed in AFL, Soccer, Netball, Volleyball and Basketball. Congratulations to all students who participated in the Peninsula Shield at Ocean View College on Friday of week 9. It was a very successful day for our school, and with outstanding conditions made it the perfect day to compete for the long-lived rivalry of the peninsula. Overall, Le Fevre High School took out the shield with an impressive 7-2 score, making that the third year in a row! Below are the results from the 9 sports that took place: Senior Boys Basketball - LFHS 44 vs OVC 21 Junior Boys Basketball - OVC 39 vs LFHS 21 Senior Girls Netball - LFHS 44 vs OVC 9 Junior Girls Netball - OVC 26 vs. LFHS 25 Open Boys Soccer - LFHS 3 vs. OVC 0 Open Girls Soccer - LFHS 6 vs. OVC 1 Senior Boys AFL - LFHS 64 vs. OVC 63 Senior Girls AFL - LFHS 58 vs. OVC 12 Senior Mixed Volleyball - LFHS 2 sets vs. OVC 0 sets There were some very exciting finishes in the junior girls netball, and senior boys football which came down to the dying moments and saw our netball team lose by one goal and the football boys win by just one point. Well done to all team captains and supercoach teachers Ms Petrov, Mr Narcys, Mr Jones and Mr Earle for supporting all students and bringing home the victory! As we approach the end of term 3, our Year 12 students are undertaking the final stages of their secondary studies. We wish them every success now and as they prepare for final examinations and assignments which will occur over the first part of Term 4. Visit From Indonesian Consul-General

On Monday, September 3rd, Le Fevre High School had a very special visitor. The Consul-General for Indonesia Pak Heru Subolo, and his friends ‘Adelindo’, Angklung group, came to visit our school to see our “unique whole school Indonesian Program”. Pak Heru is passionate about strengthening the friendship between Australia and Indonesia and was very touched by the welcome he received from our students, and very impressed by their Indonesian language skills. He addressed the assembly warmly and certainly made a positive connection with our students, encouraging them to continue their studies and extending an invitation to visit him in Sydney if they go. He also encouraged us all to visit Indonesia one day. The Indonesian language was flowing throughout the visit with Pak Craig Bailey welcoming and introducing Pak Heru using his Bahasa Indonesia. Year 8’s Sofya C, Lily B, Elle B, Matthew S and Tai M showed their Indonesian skills by providing Pak Heru with a small speech, and one of our year 10s, Jack J gave an official welcome, as well as reading an Indonesian poem he had written himself. We also really appreciate and thank Amber M, who was our amazing MC for the day. The Angklung group, ‘Adelindo’ then gave out Angklung instruments to most of the students and staff in the audience and Pak Ferry proceeded to conduct them in a song. This was quite an undertaking and very special to be part of. Our students certainly are musical and sounded incredible!! We thank Ibu Firdaus, teacher, mentor and friend of the Le Fevre Indonesian teachers, for sharing Pak Heru with us for a moment of his time in South Australia.

Ice Factor

The Ice Factor Spectacular was held at the Hilton Adelaide on Friday September 14 where our 16 Ice Factor students proudly represented our school. Some students modelled and others were ushers and helpers on the night. It was a long day of practicing on the runway, perfecting the presentation for the evening event. The students were excited, banded together and made the day fun, playing numerous games of Uno to pass the time. As a team, we would like to pay a special thank you to Ms Tilbrook, Anita and my student teacher, Ms Carter, for attending and helping us throughout the day, from giving advice, calming nerves and helping to organise outfits and shoes. Thank you also to Mr Bailey and Mr Ridge for attending the event on the night as teacher representatives. The event itself was a huge success, patrons saying it was the best Spectacular they’d ever attended. A special mention to our four Year 11 students for whom this was their last Spectacular, as the event is biannual. Thank you to the parents of the students for their support in encouraging them to get out of their comfort zones to do something like modelling. And finally, to the team, well done for challenging yourselves and being courageous, risk-takers who can now do anything!

Term 3 Ice Factor Division 1 tournament: Our Ice Factor team played in the division 1 tournament on Monday September 17 and played against the Henley Dingos, Para Hills Outlawz and Northern Adelaide Bears. All students played exceptionally well and should be proud of their achievements. We have a young side and many years ahead of us and regardless of the score, the team were successful in showing leadership, compassion and resilience throughout the day. Well done to Stephanie McN and Lizzie B who were our Term 3 awards winners.

Year 9 Kayaking

Year 9 Kayak Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU)

Over the course of 2018, all Year 9 learning groups are working through their Science and Physical Education Interdisciplinary Unit. During this unit, students learn the safety and skills associated with kayaking and water-based activities. We then utilise these skills to navigate the Port River Barker Inlet Estuary system; taking water samples, performing tests, discovering this diverse ecosystem and exploring local sites in a sustainable manner.

As students explore the diverse ecology of the Port River Barker Inlet we frequently encounter the resident dolphins who seek sanctuary here. We witness a variety of dolphin behaviours from play to feeding. This is a great experience for us all, as we sit silently whilst the dolphins play and move intriguingly. Students gain a deeper understanding of sustainable practices and the need to preserve this diverse system, and foster this in our community. Laurence Fletcher

YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL 2018 will be held at the Packing Shed, Hart’s Mill, Mundy Street, Port Adelaide. Open daily 11am-4pm Sept 29-Oct 7 with an official opening by Susan Close MP 6pm Friday Sept 28th.

On Thursday 30 August the Le Fevre school community embraced Wear It Purple Day. This special day is about showing rainbow young people, and everybody around us, that they have the right to be proud of who they are. Through creating an educational visual display in the main foyer, educating and raising awareness about the meaning of the day to students during care group and also, supporting the day by wearing the colour purple, we as a community, celebrated and empowered the diversity that surrounds each and every one of us; diversity in sex, sexuality and gender identities, in perspectives, in values, in everything! By empowering together, we are able to gain a new perspective on the lives of others around us, foster respect, unite, educate ourselves, appreciate others, have a sense of pride for the diversity in our school environment, challenge our thoughts or beliefs, and most importantly, contribute to the creation of safe and supportive environments for all people, irrespective of how they identify.
