ItishardtobelievethattodaywewelcomeOctober.Timeflieswhenyouarehavingfun!WehavebeenworkinghardthislastmonthandIthankyouforyourparticipationinthesmallgroupsandforfollowingalongwiththeCatchprogram.Iamanxioustohearandengagethenewideascomingtolifeinyourconversations.Wehaveabusymonthahead,filledwithsomefuneventsandatimetosharetogetheraboutwhereGodisleadingus.
WhenIthinkaboutOctober,memoriesofsnowytrick-or-treatingfloodmymind.Itwasalwayssofuntomakeacostumeanddressassomeoneelseforanevening.Doyourememberdressingupandknockingondoorswithhopesofdelicioustreats?MybrotherandIwouldalwayshaveatrading-sessionlateintothenight,andthepeanutbuttercupswerealwayshighlysoughtafter.
Inthemidstofallthegoings-onithascometomyattentionthatOctoberisNationalDisabilityAwarenessMonth.Sundaythe6thwillbeabusydayhereaswewalkfortheCROPWalktoraisefundsthatfighthunger,theneattogetherandshareaboutwhatitmeanstobeawareandinclusiveofpersonswithlimitations.Itiseasytoassumethatournationhascometoaplacewhereallpeoplecanaccessallbuildingseasily,andthatisreallynotthecase.Gainingmoreinsightastohowourbuildingandworshipservicescanengagepersonsofallabilitieswillbeagift.
Asdelightfulasitwastodressupasaclownorghostasakid,Ioftenrealizethatpeopleputonmaskseverysingleday.Thesemasksarethekindthatwewearwhenweareafraidthatwewillnotfitin,theonesweslipontomeettheexpectationsofothers,theonesthatcaneasilyhideourtrueselves.Theworldtellsustoputonaprettyfaceandhidethedifficultiesandstruggles.Iimaginepersonswithdisabilitiesunderstandthisatafardeeperlevelthanmanyofus.
Aretheremasksthatyouweartocoverupyourtrueself?
AswecontinuetalkingaboutwhatitmeanstobeachurchwhosedeepestdesireistoconnectpeoplewithJesus,myprayeristhatweembraceandintegratepersonswhohavebeenmarginalized.IhopeyouwilljoinusforthisdiscussiononSundayaswelearnmoreaboutwhatitmeanstobeopen,welcomingandtrulyhospitabletothosewithdisabilities.Mayweworktobeamask-freezone,whereallpeopleareimportantandincluded.
