Congratulations to Eva Bedolla, RN, Labor and Delivery, who recently received the DAISY Award at LCMH! A patient nominated Eva and listed the below reason why she is so very deserving of the Daisy Award:

“I was extremely nervous about not being able to have a V-BAC. Eva was extremely positive, caring, attentive, and treated my family like they were family. She moved me every half hour to try to further along delivery progress. I went from 6 centimeters dilated (for several hours) to 10 centimeters within 2 hours. Eva maintained a calm demeanor that put me at ease. I wasn’t afraid anymore. Eva was very supportive when it was time to push. I’m positive that she had the magic touch and was one of the greatest factors in me being able to have a successful V-BAC. I’m extremely grateful that Eva was by my side. Furthermore, the kindness that Eva extended to my mom and husband was exceptional. Even the care and love she demonstrated when giving my baby her first bath was amazing. Eva is truly an asset to LCMH – And I cannot thank her enough! Even before sending me to the 3rd floor Eva was extremely thorough and informative – an exceptional nurse! Thank you!”

Nominees will be notified on Monday, May 2nd. They will receive a letter of congratulations and a nominee ribbon to wear on their badges. Nominees will also have their photos taken for a display recognizing all nominees. Winners will receive wonderful prizes, including one night stay for two at a downtown hotel, a parking space for the year, and special recognition in the newspaper.

Little Company of Mary Hospital presented the Evergreen Park Fire Department with a $7,500 donation for the purchase of a Zoll Cardiac Defi brillator. Th e defi brillator, which aids in advanced cardiovascular life support, is used in urgent treatments of cardiac arrest and other life threatening medical emergencies. According to the American Heart Association, using a defi brillator after a cardiac arrest, improves an individual’s chances of survival.

Little Company of Mary’s Comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Center hosted its 12th Annual Living Well Celebration at the Chateau Bu-Sche in Alsip on Thursday, March 10th. The dinner-dance honored the program’s patients and their many success stories.

Nearly 100 former bariatric patients, along with their family and friends, attended the celebration. The night included a family-style dinner, a presentation by the Medical Director and Surgeon Dr. Gerald Cahill and four moving patient testimonials.

A big thank you to all of those who endured the rain to represent LCMH in both riding and walking alongside the float down Western Avenue at the Southside Irish Parade on Sunday, March 13th. April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month. According to Prevent Blindness America (PBA), 66 percent of people who are visually impaired or blind are women. Interestingly, more than ¾ of visual impairment is estimated to be preventable or correctable. Why women? The causes are mainly due to longevity, hormonal fluctuations (pregnancy, menopause, and breast cancer treatments and other hormones), women’s increased risk of autoimmune diseases that negatively affect the eyes.

According to the National Eye Institute, the most common age-related eye diseases and conditions leading to vision loss or blindness, if left untreated are:

• Age-Related Macular Degeneration: see infographic• Cataract Formation: gradual cloudiness of the eye’s

natural lens, increases with age, more common in smokers

• Diabetic Retinopathy: damage to the eye’s retina due to diabetes

• Glaucoma: a group of eye diseases that damages the optic nerve in one or both eyes, leading to vision loss and blindness. It is called “the sneak thief of sight” as there are often NO warning signs. Who is at high-risk at an earlier age? African Americans, and Hispanic populations, and diabetics are more susceptible to glaucoma.

• Dry Eye: chronic lack of enough lubrication and moisture on the eye’s surface

Prevent Blindness and Preserve Sight

• Regular eye exams: Make it a priority to get regular dilated eye exams, report visual problems or changes even during pregnancy, such as difficulty focusing on objects; seeing spots, trouble adjusting to dark rooms, double vision, watery or itchy eyes, dark spot in the center of your line of vision, lines and edges that are wavy or distorted, or eye pain.

• Maintain a healthy diet: Research supports daily nutrients for eye health such as zeaxanthin, lutein as well as omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene and vitamins C and E to protect and could enhance your vision. Eat foods like leafy green vegetables, carrots, grapefruit, Brussels sprouts, oranges, green peppers, almonds, whole grains and lean meats.

• Quit smoking: Smoking vastly increases your chances of eye disease.

• Exercise: Maintain a healthy weight and good cardiovascular health. Obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol can lead to specific vision problems.

• Control your diabetes: Uncontrolled diabetes can cause permanent damage to eye structures.

• Wear sunglasses with UV protection, hats and visors: Slows down the cataract formation.

• Educate yourself: Know your family history of eye disease. Use cosmetics and contact lenses safely.

• See your medical doctor regularly: Also routine physicals can lead to early diagnosis of potentially sight threatening diseases.

Author, Crystal Brown-Lewis, Psy.D., wife of Berry Lewis, M.D., signed and donated copies of her new children’s book, “My Mama is an Angel” to the Ellyn Rose Cronin Community Resource Library. The book tells the tender story of the relationship of a young girl and her mother, as her mother battles breast cancer. Children are devastated by the loss of a parent and often, adults are unsure on how to comfort them. “My Mama is an Angel” can open the door to healthy communication because it deals with the topic in a way that is both thoughtful and touching. “My Mama is an Angel” will also be available in the 2800 Gift Shop here at LCMH.
