Dear Parents: As we approach the beginning of a new academic year, I am very excited about the many possibilities in store for everyone at LCHS. Our renovation is moving along quickly and we expect to have most of it complete before the students return in September. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in this massive project. The students and parents, in particular, have been very understanding about the disruptions to normal operations. Principal’s Message

When students arrive to school on the first day, they will notice signs posted throughout the building indicating where they should report to pick up their schedules. During this first week, students will be reporting to homeroom each morning to pick up paperwork which will be brought home for your information. Some need to be signed by you and returned the next day. If you are unsure of your child’s bus, please check our website a few days before school begins to find out what bus he/she will ride and the approximate time for pick up.

Ninth graders who are taking this class this year will enroll in English 9 next year to complete the re-quirements for English in the two grades. If you are interested in having your child enroll in this class, there is still room

We have scheduled two sessions for students new to the school and their parents. Our first meeting for parents and students will be held on Thursday evening, August 31 at 7:00 in our auditorium. A brief program will be presented and students and parents will have the opportunity ask questions of the administration and guidance staffs. Our second session will be for students only. It will begin on Friday, September 1 at 11:00 AM with a presentation in the auditorium followed by the opportunity for students to “walk their schedule.” They will attend each of their scheduled classes for approximately 5 minutes and meet the teacher. After this they will move to the stadium for refreshments and can be picked up from the stadium at approximately 1:30.

block every “B” day. Instead of rotating through all classes each 6th block, stu-dents will now be assigned to one class to be used for three primary purposes: Study hall, Remediation labs, or they may “flex out” to another classroom. The remediation labs are for those stu-dents who are in need of extra support

Our Flex Period will take on a new twist this coming year. After studying the effectiveness of our Flex the staff formed a committee to look at better ways of providing for our students’ needs. To distinguish our new program we are calling it our Raider Rally Pe-riod. It will continue to meet during 6th

in order to succeed in classes. Stu-dents will be assigned to a content spe-cialist and will work in small groups to receive content-specific instruction. If a student is not assigned to a lab or does not “flex out”, the period will be a study hall.

Raider Rally Period

This year we are offering what we are calling a “Zero Period” class for fresh-men and sophomores. The class is English 10 at the Honors level. It will meet every day for 45 minutes and will start at 8:00 AM. It is open to any 9th or 10th graders who can provide their own transportation to the school each morn-ing. This will provide students with the opportunity to take an additional class during the regular school hours. Stu-dents attending the Academy of Sci-

Orientations Scheduled

Alphabetized homeroom assignments by grade level will be posted in several locations throughout the building on the first day so students may determine the homeroom to which they are assigned. Students are to report to their assigned homeroom on the first day of school by 8:50 a.m. All students, including ninth graders unable to attend freshmen orientation, will receive their schedule from their homeroom teacher. On the first five days of school, we will run an activity schedule to allow for the completion of admin-istrative tasks and class meetings.

Schedule

Research shows that academic achievement is directly related to atten-dance and in an effort to improve our school’s overall attendance, Loudoun County High School will be implement-ing a new attendance procedure to monitor each student’s attendance, par-ticularly unexcused absences. All stu-dents will be assigned an advocate (either an administrator or a guidance counselor) who will chart their students’

attendance and develop strategies to assist him/her in keeping individual ab-sence rates below 15%. The county at-tendance officer as-signed to Loudoun County High School will assist with this initiative.

August 2006 Loudoun County High School 4

Beginning this year, we will be institut-ing new procedure with respect to stu-dent use of electronic devices. It seems as though our policies in the past have worked very well for about 95% of our students. However, the other 5% have continued to be repeat offenders of this policy. Cell phone use will continue to be prohibited dur-ing the instructional day (9:00 AM to 3:48 PM). This is keeping with school board policy. New this year is our CD player, iPod, etc. policy. These items will not be permitted to be used, or visible, inside the building. Once again, this will not be a dramatic change for the majority of our students and should not cause any undue hardships. Research is becom-ing clearer about the harmful effects of these items on the hearing of the users.

Additionally, we are noticing that stu-dents who wear them are becoming more tuned out to things around them, thus creating a safety hazard as well.

During the time students are in the building, these items must be out of sight. Staff will be instructed to confiscate any electronic devices which

are not in compliance with this policy and turn them in to our security office for parent pick-up.

I also need to make note of the potential attraction some of these devices have for those who would consider stealing them. As you may know, thefts of these items have become a problem everywhere in society, and the school is no exception. We can make every attempt to provide for the security of these items, but the fact of the matter is that they are small and can be easily hidden when taken. School staffs around the country are dealing with a sharp increase in thefts of these items. We cannot continue to ex-pend the tremendous staff resources in-vestigating the thefts that we have in the past. Also, the school does not carry any liability coverage for the loss of these items; thus, the safest way to protect these assets is to keep them secure at home.

This past year Loudoun County High School awarded Academic Letters to students who made the Honor Roll every grading period. This is a very distinct honor which was earned by over 400 stu-dents during the 2005-2006 school year and some-thing which the students can include on college ap-plications. We will continue this program each year. A number of students who were eligible have still not picked them up. If you think you met the qualifica-tions, feel free to check with Mr. Oblas.

Academic Letters a Big Hit

Our e-mail has become flooded with Spam. The senders have become very ingenious about disguising the content of the email be-fore we open it. If you are contacting LCHS by email, please indicate in the “subject” box something to indicate that you are a “parent”. Thanks for your help with this!

Equity Team

LCHS has put together an Equity Team. The purpose of this program is to continue to address the practices and programs at the school to determine if any barriers exist to full participa-tion of students, regardless of race, ethnicity, etc. For any which are found, strategies will be developed to remediate the situa-tion. Current staff members of the commit-tee are Dr. Tammy Brock, Mrs. Muriel Heanue, Mrs. Toni Rader, and Mrs. Carol Zimmerman. We would like to have in-terested parents join us as we begin our work. If you are interested, please call Dr. Brock in the office.

School Meal Prices Raised for 2006-07 School Year

The price of Loudoun County Public Schools meals has been raised for the 2006-07 school year. The price of meals will be as follows:

• Breakfast $1.10 • Lunch $2.00 • Secondary Lunch $2.10 • Adult Meal $3.00 • Ala carte $1.60

The need for the increase was dictated by the need for higher wages and increases in group health insurance and retirement costs for cafeteria workers. The increase in cost of food and increase energy costs also led to the increase in prices. In recent years, LCPS has offered healthier choices in its cafeteria selections as well as greater variety to meet various dietary restrictions. During the 2005-06 school year 56 percent of LCPS students bought lunch from the school cafeteria, an increase of 6 percent from four years earlier.

LCHS Absentee Call-In Line When a student will be absent from school, parents are asked to call the attendance call-in line. The number is (703) 779-1369. Please leave the follow-ing information when you call: date, student name, grade, reason for the ab-sence, and the identity of the caller. Please be patient and persistent as there is only one call-in line and one answering machine to handle all incoming calls. The line is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

During the first week of school, your son/daughter will be provided with a planner that includes the rules and regula-tions of the school and a student Rights and Respon-sibilities Handbook. They will bring these documents home for you to review. On the inside of each of the documents is a page for the parent and the student to sign indicating that the documents have been reviewed. Please look for these documents, sign the pages and return them to school with your child to be turned in to his/her homeroom teacher. Your prompt attention to this request is greatly appreciated.
