Determined to continue with his stud-ies, he was in the process of applying to graduate programs for a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering. His dream was to build the devices that “could save lives.” His passions lay in philosophy, nano tech-nology, physics, and applied mathematics.

In his leisure, Guzman, was a talented musician who loved to sing and play the guitar and the ukulele. He was also a star athlete and avid runner, as well as a dab-bler in photography. Yet most importantly, Guzman had strong family values, and would spend much of his time with friends and loved ones.

He was also deeply rooted in his Cath-olic faith. He was actively involved for years within his parish community at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Artesia. Guzman was a member of the founding core team for the Unity Through Christ (UTC) young adult ministry at Holy Fam-ily in 2005 and was the head of the public-ity team for church events. In addition, he also participated in the Holy Family Young Adult (HFYA) ministry and was a steadfast volunteer for the Young Adult Choir.

Jesus’ passing has left an indelible void within the community that so depended on his strength and giving nature. In memory of him, the HFYA ministry has begun a “Help Support Jesse Guzman” campaign at http://www.giveforward.com/jesseguz-man. All proceeds will be given to the Guzman family to help lighten the burden of the costs anticipated for Jesus’ medical care. A second fundraiser has been estab-lished in Guzman’s name by his cousin, Anna R. Escobar, to help the Guzman fam-ily in their time of need. Further informa-tion can be found at: http://www.majesti-

Death of 24 Year Old Artesia Resident Baffles Los Angeles Coroner OfficialsBy Maria Bolanos

Jesus Guz-man, a well loved 24 year old resident of Artesia passed away on Dec. 22 after a brief illness.Medical officials are still in the process of determining what exactly caused his death.

Guzman, known by his friends and family as a kind, fun-loving, young man “with the best of his life ahead of him,” succumbed after a brief illness.

Ed Winter, Assistant Chief at the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, told Los Cerritos Community News that Guz-man came down with a severe cough on Dec. 5, and sought immediate treatment from a local medical facility. He was pre-scribed a cough syrup coated with codeine, and then sent home.

Five days later, on Dec.10, Guzman was again taken to an area hospital, and was admitted to Urgent Care with com-plaints of severe vomiting and infection. According to Winter, he was given Advil and again sent home.

By Dec.0r 21, Guzman’s condition had worsened and was then sent to County USC Hospital, at the Keck School of Med-icine—where, despite efforts to treat him, Guzman died of acute liver failure within

a day. As of Tuesday, Coroner officials have

still not determined what caused his pass-ing and autopsy results are still pending. Winter said they hope to have the results of the autopsy results completed this week.

Born Jesus Francisco Navarro Guzman was surrounded by his family and friends at the time of his passing.

The devout Catholic had lived a fulfill-ing yet short life, full of promise and good faith, according to close family friends.

Jesus—known as “Jesse” by his friends—was born on Oct. 7, 1987 in Long Beach. He was the son of Carlos and Teresa Guzman and had two older sisters, Angie and Nancy.

He was an alumnus of Gahr High School and continued on to study at the California State University of Long Beach. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honors in Computer Engineering and a minor in Computer Science. Guzman graduated on the President’s Honor List, receiving the Certificate of Excellence for Scholastic Achievement.

In addition to his own studies, Guzman also taught at CSULB as an Instructional Assistant in Mathematics, Computer En-gineering, and Computer Science. At the same time, he served as an Instructional Tutor at the CSULB Learning Assistance Center, providing troubleshooting help in C++, Java, Assembly, and Verilog. Guzman was committed to his students, teaching at Long Beach even in the summer months, where he instructed his own classroom of 18-20 students through the school’s Sum-mer Bridge Program.

Guzman worked briefly as an Appli-cation Programmer Trainee at Pac Comm Technologies, Inc. in Anaheim Hills, where he maintained and customized soft-

LA MIRADA RESIDENT DIES AFTER ACCIDENT AT LOCAL GROCERY WAREHOUSEBy Randy Economy

A Wednesday evening accident at a Carmenita Road grocery warehouse has claimed the life of a 48-year old La Mira-da resident.

Whitney Students Surveyed on Naming Multimedia CenterBy Shivanni Patel

Whitney student, Shivanni Patel and LCCN intern conducted a student survey on the Whitney High School Multimedia Center (using Survey Monkey) for Los Cerritos Community News. Thirty-three people were interviewed.

1. Do you know about the donation given by Grace Hu for the Multimedia Center?Yes ? 75.8% (25 people)No ? 27.3% (9 people)

2. Who should recommend the name for the Center?School Board ? 6.1% (2 people)Whitney High School Foundation ? 54.5% (18 people)School Site Administrators ? 6.1% (2 people)School District Administrators ? 6.1% (2 people)Other ? 15.2% (5 people)I don?t know - 12.1% (4 people)

3. How important is it to have things named on the school campus?Not Important ? 36.4% (12 people)Important ? 39.4% (13 people)Very Important ? 24.2% (8 people)

4. Whose name should be on the Multi-media Center?Grace Hu ? 15.2% (5 people)Bob Beall ? 24.2% (8 people)Other ? 24.2% (8 people)

I don’t know ? 36.4% (12 people)

5. Any comments/thoughts? (*all comments were anonymous)

Since we already said that we were going to name the building after Grace Hu, even if many of us would like to name it after Bob Beall (and I actually do, too, after Mrs. Brannen told us about who he was and what he did for Whit-ney), to break a promise already made is not really fair.

Since Grace Hu hasn't given all the money for the building yet, it would be smart to name the building in her honor so we still receive the money. Of course, she won't fight to get her name on the building herself so we should try to keep our word. However, the district has guide-lines on what a building can be named, and Grace Hu does not fall under any of these guidelines, whereas Mr. Beall does. Under this, the center will probably have to go under a generic name such as Whitney High School Community Multi Media Center with specific rooms inside the center named after Mrs. Hu or Mr. Beall.

Bob Beall should at least some kind of major monument and recognition for who he was inside the building. Without him Whitney wouldn't be what it is, and without Hu, the Media Center wouldn't be here.

Promises made should not be re-scinded.

The students should name it since they're the ones who'll use it.

We can have Rooms named after the people instead of the whole media cen-ter, that way everyone is represented.

Political campaigning should not in-filtrate schooling and the academic envi-ronment.

The Giving Tree Is a Parish Community Outreach Project By Edna Ethington

Parishioners of St. Irenaeus Church in Cypress help residents of five Care Cen-ters celebrate Christmas through their annual Giving Tree Project. The Giving Tree Project invites the whole parish to participate in sharing the Christmas Spirit by reaching out and giving gifts to others. Starting at the end of November, Health Ministry members provided large paper bags for all the students at St. Irenaeus School to artistically cover the bags with Christmas decorations. This year, Mrs. Cathy Corkhill’s Sixth Grade class even made warm scarves as a service project and filled the bags they decorated for the residents. In all, 450 bags were decorat-ed by the students. After the bags were decorated, parishio-ners were asked to select a bag with sug-gestions listed on what residents of the Care Centers might want or need, such as scarves, lap blankets, toiletries, lotions, stuffed animals, shampoos, stationery, stamps, etc. Bags were returned by the middle of December for delivery to the Care Centers by teams of Health Minis-try Board members. Parishioners then joined with members of St. Irenaeus’ Adult Choir, Filipino Choir and Young Adults in singing carols and other Christmas songs at each of the Care Center parties. They also helped to deliver gift bags to residents at the parties

and also to residents who were bedridden in their rooms. Residents especially en-joyed singing familiar Christmas songs with everyone. Residents were pleased to receive gifts individually from five parishioners who acted at Santas. They were Joe Bergfalk, Troy Kissell, Ken Francis, John Lewal-len and one female Santa, Vickie Larson. There even was a Mrs. Claus at one of the centers, Mrs. Lucy Kissell, and San-ta’s Elf Grace Walters was present at ev-

ery Care Center party. The Giving Tree project was a great success because parishioners responded with generosity to fill the 450 gift bags. Health Ministry members were grateful for the support they received from the staff and students of St. Irenaeus School. They also appreciated all the parishio-ners who took time off from their jobs and busy schedules to share the Christ-mas Spirit with the residents of the Care Centers.

MY FRIEND FROM FRUITCAKE, FLORIDAOne does not have a claim on one’s

Life but only the right to use it

By Jerry Bernstein

I was working late the evening of Dec. 28 when I looked up from my computer and saw my friend from Fruitcake, Florida standing in front of my desk. I’m never surprised when he or VAL LYNDER, DE-FENDER OF ALL THAT IS TRUE shows up. “I thought you were spending the holi-days in Fruitcake, “I said.

“I decided to accept an invitation to visit some friends this year in Los Ange-les. Did you have a good Christmas?” he asked.

“As a matter of fact,” I replied, “I did. Spent the day with my daughter, her hus-

band and grandkids. How was yours?”“Good,” he said. “I thought I’d drop

by as long as I was in the vicinity and see what was going on.” I knew he had some-thing on his mind, so I waited. Finally he asked, “Anything new in Hawaiian Gar-dens?”

“All’s quiet,” I replied. Mike Gomez was elected Mayor for a second consecu-tive year and Victor Farfan was elected Mayor Pro Tem.”

“Was that by a unanimous vote?” “Nope, “I replied, it was by a 3-2

vote.”“Well, I see nothing has really

changed.” He paused a moment. “Has your councilman admitted he was wrong?”

“Nope.”“I guess that means he is still saying

the newspaper and supporters of the May-or and Councilman Farfan told lies about him.”

“Correct,” I said. As a matter of fact in his Thanksgiving newsletter he said his

church “Way Out Ministries,” was short of funds and could use some contributions to make up the deficit. In his Christmas newsletter he ranted about how we had told lies about him and the candidates he backed for city council.

“Do tell. You know we had a similar situation in Fruitcake. Our pastor was a person who had strong opinions and couldn’t handle criticism. He also had strong political ideas about the city and eventually turned his congregation off. Came time for his annual holiday dinner where he invited members of his flock and the homeless who were down on their luck to participate he didn’t have the volunteers he normally had to prepare the dinner. He had to call upon some of the participants who arrived early to help out.

“What happened?” I asked.“Enough of them volunteered and he

held the dinner.” He paused a moment. “He blamed it on those who disagreed with him and what he called falsehood spread about him by his enemies.”

“That’s to bad,” I commented. What happened.”

“Well, Fruitcake is a small town. Many of his congregation left his church and joined other churches in town where they said love and understanding was the mes-sage preached You know, Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

“Agreed”, he said. “You have a good New Year and I‘ll see you next year.”

“You too,” I replied as my friend from Fruitcake, Florida walked out of the of-Fruitcake, Florida walked out of the of-Fruitcake, Florida walked out of the office.

The Activist’s CornerBy Charlie Ara

While in the Seminary, over 60 years ago, I listened to a guest speaker whose theme was YOU CAN DO IT. He re-peated this phrase over and over again. He was trying to say to us that each of us could do our part in making this a bet-ter world. He coined a phrase, which still rings in my ears to this day: IT IS BETT-rings in my ears to this day: IT IS BETT-rings in my ears to this day: IT IS BETTTER TO LIGHT A CANDLE THAN TO CURSE THE DARKNESS.

This is not a perfect world and, yes, it may have some darkness in it. But we activist Democrats have made it a better world. We stand for JUSTICE FOR ALL. Against the opposition of the Republicans we passed Social Security, Civil Rights and Medicare. We were responsible for promoting Women’s Right to Vote, for ending segregation in the South and for promoting programs to get out of the Great Depression. Under President Johnson we passed the Voting Rights act, which pro-

tected the Voting Right of Black Ameri-cans in the South, In the war on Poverty in the 1960, Democrats led the way in lifting millions out of poverty.

In the late 1940’s, Five Mexican American families challenged school segregation in Orange County. Due to their activism, the Case of Mendez vs. the Westminster Board of Education brought about the end of segregated schools in Orange County. This action of five Mexi-can-American families paved the way for the more famous 1954 historical case of BROWN VS THE BOARD OF EDUCA-TION, which mandated school desegre-gation in the South.

On the local level, some Democratic Activists have challenged the At Large election systems at both Cerritos College and the ABC Unified School District. Because of these systems, Latino voting rights have been diluted. Our activism has been successful at Cerritos College, as their Board of Trustees has voted to elect by District. At this writing, the ABCUSD is still in the process of studying this change. It is hoped that our Democratic activism will continue until ABCUSD fi-nally recognizes the fairness of voting by area.

Yes, WE CAN DO IT and REMEM-BER IT IS BETTER TO LIGHT A CAN-DLE THAN TO CURSE THE DARK-NESS.

Letter to ABC Board Member Maynard Law

As the Assembly member represent-ing the 56th district, I would like to urge you to support the ABC Unified School District from an at-large election system to one where the Board Members are elected by district.

Changing to district elections would how a commitment to creating a fair election process and bolstering the in-tegrity of the ABC Unified School Dis-trict. ABC serves the six cities of Artesia, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Long Beach, and Norwalk, yet all your board members live in the city of Cer-ritos.

Allowing the six communities in your service area a greater voice in the elec-tion of the governing board of the ABC schools will do a great deal to increase the fairness of the election process for individuals of all races and backgrounds, wherever they live.

I thank you for your consideration of this critical issue.

Sincerely, Tony MendozaAssembly member

The City of Cer-ritos is making every possible effort to re-vive redevelopment agencies in response to the California Su-preme Court’s deci-sion on December 29, 2011 which dissolves redevelopment agen-cies and their powers effective February 1, 2012.

The City is gravely disappointed by the California Supreme Court’s decision as the dissolution of redevelopment agen-cies will have a catastrophic, long-lasting financial impact on cities throughout the State of California. There are 400 rede-velopment agencies which have made outstanding contributions to the state’s economy. Redevelopment agencies are essential for job creation, construction of affordable housing and infrastructure development. Many future affordable housing projects throughout California are in peril with the loss of redevelop-ment agencies. These projects would cre-ate construction jobs and stimulate retail spending as new homeowners furnish their households.

The City is working with the League of California Cities, California Redevel-opment Agency and state legislators to develop legislation to revive redevelop-ment to protect local communities, job creation and our economy. The first effort underway is to work with the legislature to extend the February 1 deadline for the elimination of redevelopment agencies.

The City of Cerritos, along with nine other cities, also filed a separate legal challenge in Sacramento Superior Court on September 26, 2011. This lawsuit raises constitutional claims which were not addressed in the California State Su-preme Court decision on December 29, 2011. A copy of the complaint can be viewed on the City’s website at cerritos.us. On January 4, 2012 the City filed a motion for stay order and preliminary injunction on behalf of the consortium

of cities. The motion asks the Superior Court to continue the stay that had been issued by the Supreme Court pending its consideration of the redevelopment case. The goals of the stay order/preliminary injunction are to preserve the status quo pending a trial on the merits of the con-sortium’s case and to prevent the dis-solution of redevelopment agencies on February 1, 2012. The hearing on the motion is set for January 27, 2012.

Redevelopment has been extremely important to the City of Cerritos for 40 years. Property tax paid to the Cerritos Redevelopment Agency, known as “tax increment,” has funded such projects as the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station/Commu-nity Safety Center, the Cerritos Senior Center at Pat Nixon Park, one gym at Cerritos High School, one gym at Gahr High School, the gym at Whitney High School, Heritage Park Play Island, Lib-erty Park, the Cerritos Park East Com-munity Center, and the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. Property tax increment also funded the construction of the City’s affordable senior housing projects, such as Emerald Villas, Pioneer Villas, Vintage Cerritos and Fountain Walk. Without redevelopment, none of these community facilities would have been possible.

Redevelopment was also essen-tial for the developments of the Cerri-tos Towne Center, Los Cerritos Center, Cerritos Auto Square and Cerritos In-dustrial Park. The financial success of these projects has benefited the entire southeast Los Angeles County region as there are thousands of people employed in the businesses located in these devel-opments. These employees spend their salaries in cities throughout the region, making a significant contribution to local economies.

As the City continues its fight to re-vive redevelopment I will continue to provide the community with updates on our efforts. I encourage residents to call me at City Hall at (562) 916-1311 or to send me an e-mail through the City’s website at cerritos.us and share their sug-gestions, concerns and questions.

Twenty five years ago on New Year’s Eve, 1985 the lives of Matthew and Gun-nar Nelson changed forever.

Then 18 years of age, the identical twin boys lost their father, legendary singer and actor Rick Nelson, in a plane crash in Texas. The news shocked the world, and for them it was the moment that “stood still in time.”

In a revealing interview with Los Cer-ritos Community News, Matthew Nelson opened up about the night of his father’s death, and how if changed him and his brother “forever.”

“I was in my car in front of my friend Duffy’s house, I had heard a couple of songs on the car radio he was singing, and it was interesting, I never put it together that they played three songs in a row, and it was actually on K-LOS, the local rock station, and Jim Ladd came on the air,” Matthew told Los Cerritos Community News.

“I had just commented to my friend in the car how amazing and clear my dad’s voice was on his song Garden Party, and then Ladd came back, and he sounded re-ally sad ‘this has been a tribute to Rick Nelson and his whole band who were lost today in a plane crash in DeKalb, Texas,” he said with is voice sinking.

“It had felt like someone had shot me, and I evidently got out of the car, made it around five feet and passed out,” he said. “I was supposed to be on the plane with him and so was Gunnar and at the very

last minute my dad asked us if we wanted to meet him to fly commercial to Dallas where he was on his way on a DC-3 that went down. I genuinely feel that he had a second sighted moment about Gunnar and me travelling with him,” Matt said.

“The only ones to make it out alive in the crash were the pilot and co-pilot, and they made it out the front windows,” he said. “It has been all these years and it still

feels like he is on the road.It is still too horrible for me to get into, so I talk about it (the crash) like it was a football game, I have to. We are all going to go sometime, I just don’t want to put myself in a risky position if I don’t have to,” he said.

At the time of his legendary father’s death, he and Gunnar were 18 years old, and Matthew said his father had just gone through a “world record divorce” and had “his entire family back living with him” and life was going great.

“My dad was making incredible mu-sic at the time of his death,” Matthew stressed. “The age of 45 is far too young to die.”

“It is going to be an interesting show. This is something we want to do, not have to do. Our dad was our best friend, so we said if we are going to do this right (a tribute concert). We are playing his songs the way he did them,” said Nelson. “This concert in Cerritos is going to be the soundtrack of our life as well this being part of our legacy.”

He said that fans can expect to see a “video scrapbook” from the day “Gunnar and I were born.”

“My dad was arguable one of the most documented rock stars in history, so we really tip our hat to him in this con-cert and share great stories. You will not only see the type of entertainer he was, but what kind of man he really was, and where our family is headed in the future,” Nelson said.

“By the time you leave the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, you will really understand the pure magic of Ricky Nelson, the legacy he left all of us and how we connect our fans directly to our family in a very personal way,” he said.

“The world is so not Ozzie and Har-riet anymore,” referring to his late iconic grandparents.

“Gunnar and I grew up in a different time, and I think our family has always done something relative and relevant from where the show starts in the 1930’s, to my dad’s music in the 50’s to the 80’s,” he said. During the performance they stress a special motto of their late father, “Be-lieve in what you’re doing, and be proud of it.”

The concert on Sunday, Jan. 15 at the CCPA is being billed as “Second Genera-tion Stars” and will also feature Deana Martin, the singer-actress daughter of Dean Martin, and Steve March Torme, the son of the iconic Mel Torme. Former Miss America and television personality Mary Ann Mobley emcees the afternoon.

La Mirada Foster Park Neighborhood Improvements Phase 2 Nearing Completion

The second phase of the Foster Park Improvements project continues in the area bounded by Imperial Highway to the north, Milan Creek to the south, Clear-wood Avenue to the east, and Marquardt Avenue to the west. Storm drain piping and catch basins have been installed to prevent street flooding and redirect the water to underground storm drains. Re-location of water and sewer pipe, street tree removal, and replacement and re-surfacing of all streets continues within the project area. The $4.8 million proj-ect is funded with Redevelopment and Community Development Block Grant funds.

“The current state of the project re-flects a completion level of approxi-mately 55 percent,” says Public Works Director Steve Forster. “The third phase of improvements is being finalized and should be ready to bid by the time Phase 2 is complete by spring 2012.”

Work currently in progress includes reconstruction of Marquardt Avenue, and

parkway landscape repairs. Work south of Foster Road is expected to begin in the beginning of next year.

Ahern Equipment Rentals to Open New Facility in La Mirada

The La Mirada Planning Commission recently approved the opening of a new Ahern Equipment Rentals facility in La Mirada. Centrally located between cur-rent rental centers in Long Beach, Brea, and Santa Ana, the new La Mirada branch will consolidate operations into one fa-cility. While the company has retained its current workforce new employment op-portunities will become available.

The 125,000-square-foot facility will house administrative offices, rental equipment storage, a repair shop, and several delivery trucks. The location in La Mirada’s industrial business area is expected to reduce the company’s trans-portation costs. Ahern Rentals is one of the leading equipment rental companies in the southwest, specializing in equip-

ment rental and sales as well as providing a wide selection of contractor supplies, parts and equipment service options.

The company joins other recent busi-ness developments in La Mirada, such as a new Big 5 Sporting Goods, the City’s first 7-11 convenience store, and TEC Equipment’s facility expansion into the formerly vacant Rancho Mirada Chevro-let site.

Dr. Urban on Today’s Dentistry

Periodontal Disease Can Be Painless but so DestructiveYour dentist has determined that you have periodontal disease. What happens now?

By Douglas Urban, D.D.S.

The term disease refers to a nega-tive or reversing

force that impairs nor-mal function. Invad-ing organisms or in-ternal factors such as autoimmune factors can cause this tearing apart of our normal states of health.

Periodontal disease turns out to be a very complicated process that can vary greatly from one person to the next. Ba-sically, dentists are now aware that there are over two dozen different bacteria that can team up in different numbers and in-fect the gum tissues that normally form little tight collars around the teeth. The bacterial invasion will creep onto the roots. The body will fight back with its immune system and the gums will bleed. Prolonged exposure will result in gum recession, bleeding, swelling, pus, bone loss and eventually tooth loss.

It is very important for you to ask your hygienist and dentist what stage of this disease process you are experienc-ing. This will determine the treatment course and the prognosis.

Stage one periodontitis is character-ized as chronic inflammation of the gums with beginning bone loss around teeth. The disease process spreads beyond the gum margins and infects the attachments that hold the tooth steady. Thereafter, each successive stage is an advancement of this disease. Eventually the teeth be-come loose and require surgery or extrac-tion. Favorable outcomes, if possible, re-quire more treatment to stop and restore the attachments that hold teeth firm.

But doctor, it doesn’t hurt. Why go through all of this treatment? Periodon-tal disease is painless until irreversible destruction has occurred and the teeth start getting loose. Consider the diseases of hypertension, diabetes, and high cho-lesterol. These diseases do not hurt and rarely have symptoms until permanent changes have developed. Usually they are detected and confirmed by lab tests and your doctor.

The same is true of periodontal dis-ease. The disease is caused by bacteria that are not routinely brushed and flossed away. Some of these bacteria can get into the blood stream and put the heart at risk. The body’s inflammatory load increases places other body organs at risk. These are reasons why your dentist considers periodontal disease as a “whole body” or systemic disease that must be controlled for your health.

Please heed your hygienist’s recom-mendations and keep up regular visits.

The Superior Court suit claims the two-redevelopment bills AB1x27 and AB1x26 were approved as “trailer bills” of the 2011-12 budget bill by the legis-lature. AB1x27 was later ruled unconsti-tutional by the Supreme Court. The suit contends the two bills were presented to the Governor before the Budget Bill, which according to Article IV, section 12(4) of the California Constitution does not qualify them as trailer bills and there-fore need a two-thirds vote from the state assembly and senate to become effective and which they did not receive. The law-suit also contends they are “stand alone bills” and have no Constitutionally per-mitted relationship to the Budget Bill.

The lawsuit also charges that under Article XII and XIV of the State Consti-tution the State is prohibited from redis-tributing or redirecting a redevelopment agency’s tax increment revenue for the benefit of the State or the benefit of local agencies other than the redevelopment agency itself. In addition Article XVI requires that tax increment revenues be paid to redevelopment agencies and that such revenues be used to “pay” the prin-cipal of and interest on loans, money ad-vanced to, or indebtedness incurred by the redevelopment agency to finance or refinance in whole or in part, the rede-velopment project. These are just two of the Constitutional questions raised in the Superior Court suit that were not address by the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The cities include the cities of Cer-ritos, Carson, Commerce, Cypress, Downey, Lakewood, Paramount, Placen-tia, Santa Fe Springs and Signal Hill.

At the same time Cerritos working to develop new legislation that will allow

redevelopment to continue and is joining the League of California Cities and the California Redevelopment Association’s efforts to work with state legislators to develop legislation to revive redevelop-ment to protect local communities, job creation and the economy.

Mayor Chen said, “Redevelopment has been extremely important to the City of Cerritos for 40 years” She said prop-erty tax paid to the Cerritos Redevelop-ment Agency, known as “tax increment,” has funded such projects as the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station/Community Safety Center, the Cerritos Senior Center at Pat Nixon Park, one gym at Cerritos High School, one gym at Gahr High School, the gym at Whitney High School, Heri-tage Park Play Island, Liberty Park, the Cerritos Park East Community Center, and the Cerritos Center for the Perform-ing Arts. Property tax increment also funded the construction of the City’s af-funded the construction of the City’s af-funded the construction of the City’s affordable senior housing projects, such as Emerald Villas, Pioneer Villas, Vintage Cerritos and Fountain Walk. Without re-development, none of these community facilities would have been possible.

She also pointed out redevelopment was essential for the development of the Cerritos Towne Center, Los Cerritos Center, Cerritos Auto Square and Cerri-tos Industrial Park. The Mayor stated the financial success of these projects has benefited the entire southeast Los Ange-les County region, as there are thousands of people employed in the businesses located in these developments. These employees spend their salaries in cities throughout the region, making a signifi-cant contribution to local economies.”

Brown spokesman Gil Duran also told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday that cities “brought doom upon them-selves by suing the state, challenging the compromise agreement the Legislature struck during last spring’s budget nego-tiations.”

“The redevelopment people are screaming from the mountaintops and calling for a compromise,” Duran told the LA Times. “They had a compromise, but they (the cities) rushed to court and they blew themselves up,” he is quoted as stating.

Americans with Disabilities Act.Echoing statements from April 2011,

when the Olson Company was chosen over Habitat for Humanity and City Ven-tures to develop the site, Mayor Pro Tem Steve Hwangbo and Councilmembers Ralph D. Rodriguez and Steve Shanahan expressed concerns about cross-traffic on La Palma Ave, noting the proximity of Steve Luther Elementary School, as well as the recent accident at the intersection of La Palma Ave and Denni St.

City officials had previously consid-ered entry from Montecito Drive, not La Palma Drive due to this, but residents were uncooperative due to unease over low cost housing.

Councilmember Rodriguez also in-quired about the possibility of adding ivy to the walls of the townhouses for civic

beautification, a proposal which was adopted in a friendly amendment to the development plans (Precise Plan 272 and Vesting Tentative Tract Map 17431).

The Denni Street Affordable Housing Specific Plan is part of the Community Development Program, and by law, cities must set aside 20 percent of their rede-velopment budgets for such projects.

In further business, during appoint-ments to External Committees and In-ternal Subcommittees, the City Council created a special Business committee, headed by Mayor G. Henry Chaoren and Councilmember Steve Shanahan, as a successor to the Chamber of Com-merce subcommittee. This is in keeping with Charoen's pledge to promote more communication between citizens and City Hall as well as helping to bring new businesses to La Palma.

Lastly, acting on an emergency item, the City of La Palma elected to be the Successor Agency for the dissolution of the La Palma Community Development Commission, following a Dec 29 ruling by the California Supreme Court in CRA v Matosantos. In that ruling, the Court upheld the validity of Assembly Bill (AB) 1X 26, which dissolved all rede-velopment agencies in the State, and in-validated AB 1X 27, which would have allowed redevelopment agencies to re-main in operation by making a payment to assist the state budget. As a result, the dissolution of said agencies will be ef-dissolution of said agencies will be ef-dissolution of said agencies will be effective February 1, 2012.

Councilmember Shanahan "regrets that this it has come to this, but will take the small measure of control" over costs and distribution of the Community De-velopment Commission's assets by La Palma choosing to become the Successor Agency, as opposed to declining and hav-ing the responsibility go to the first other public agency that notifies the county auditor-controller of its interest.

Jim Kennedy, Interim Executive Di-rector for the California Redevelopment Association told LCCN on Wednesday that cities across California are “ex-tremely disappointed” in court ruling and that it is a “new paradigm shift in the way of thinking who cities can legally operate when it comes to development for the future.”

“These are uncharted waters that cit-ies are going to enter into,” Kennedy said. “This court ruling has made cities change from one way of thinking to an-other overnight. Redevelopment will no longer exist as we have known it here in California,” Kennedy said in a phone in-terview from his Sacramento office.

Kennedy said he didn’t know the “specific setting” for Cerritos and other cities in Southeast Los Angeles County, and said that a lawsuit filed by Cerritos, Lakewood and others seeking to test the “constitutionality” of the new law “could take years” to wind through the legal process.

“This is a worst case scenario that we now have to deal with,” Kennedy said. So far, he said cities around California have contributed as much as $600,000 in legal costs, but would not disclose an ex-act dollar amount to LCCN. He said the California Redevelopment Association is a “private trade association” and “does not have to publicly disclose” financial matters.

CITY OF NORWALKNorwalk City Manager Mike Egan

said on Wednesday afternoon that “Leg-islators expressed repeatedly that it was not their intention to abolish redevelop-ment; they simply wanted revenue to off-ment; they simply wanted revenue to off-ment; they simply wanted revenue to offset the persistent deficit in their own bud-get. The Supreme Court ruling not only abolishes redevelopment, it still does not provide the monies the State hoped for. The residents of

Norwalk has clearly benefitted from a number of first-rate redevelopment projects over the last few decades. These improvements have been crucial for our residents, businesses, the City and the School Districts. Without redevel-opment tools, progress will come to a screeching halt, and do great harm to the community. We need to work with the legislature to achieve what they said was their intention.”

CITY of La PALMADominick Lazzaretto, City Manager

for the City of La Palma said his city will have “significant and lasting effects” due to the ruling. “Prior to this law being en-acted, we had been in discussions with developers for the rehabilitation of two shopping centers, the development of a new hotel, and the creation of a new af-new hotel, and the creation of a new af-new hotel, and the creation of a new affordable housing program. Now, those efforts are likely to be abandoned. We could have played an important role in jobs creation and economic recovery, but we are left with sitting back and hoping something materializes on those chal-lenged sites someday,” said Lazzaretto.

CITY of PICO RIVERAIn Pico Rivera, city finance director

Michael Matsumoto said that “the Su-preme Court held that the State has the right to dissolve all redevelopment agen-cies, but the State could not exact pay-ment for their survival.” He went on to say that several dates were modified and further analysis will be done regarding

the details of dissolving redevelopment agencies. Pico Rivera officials plan to discuss the issue publicly during their city council meeting on January 10.

CITY of BELLFLOWERBellflower Mayor Scott Larsen told

LCCN that "I'm disappointed, but not surprised by the Supreme Court decision. Although I don't doubt the individual commitment of the several members of the State Legislature who have said they would support reconstituting redevelop-ment in some form should the Supreme Court decide as it did, it is unknown if or when this might take place.”

“The long term effect of the Supreme Court's decision is not yet known, it will damage Bellflower's ability to promote economic development, create new jobs, and improve our community,” Larsen said.

He also said that the City's $7 million Belmont Court mixed-use project will not be affected because no redevelop-ment money is being used.

CITY of La MIRADALa Mirada city officials also reacted

by saying “killing this powerful job-creating tool, State officials have made it more difficult than ever for local govern-ments to stimulate new investment, cre-ate jobs, and grow local economies.”

“A provision that would have allowed redevelopment agencies to continue in existence if they agreed to pay money to the State was also struck down by the Supreme Court.”

“Local officials had sought to pre-serve redevelopment agencies, which have been responsible for some of Cali-fornia’s most impressive economic gains for nearly 60 years. The full impact of the Court’s decisions is still being deter-mined, but redevelopment as it existed is gone. Redevelopment agencies used a portion of the property taxes coming from improvements within their boundar-ies to stimulate additional private invest-ment, new development and job creation in the area. These funds were also used for public improvements such as streets, sewers and other needed facilities.”

La Mirada officials also pointed to “many local examples highlighting where redevelopment has improved blighted neighborhoods, cleaned up contaminated properties, built affordable housing, cre-ated jobs and stimulated economic activ-ity that wouldn’t have happened without redevelopment.”

“The La Mirada Redevelopment Agency is proud of a number of projects completed over its nearly 40 year history including:

An obsolete 70-acre Outlet Mall was converted into a modern, 34-acre com-mercial development and a 36-acre resi-dential project. The project has 300,000 square feet of commercial space and 237 single family homes.

An 82-acre industrial park includes eight buildings totaling 1.5 million square feet. Major businesses include US Foodservice, Shaw Carpet, Xpedx, Bralco Metals and Beaulieu of America. Jobs, sales tax and property tax incre-ment revenue flowed from the Agency’s efforts.

A blighted commercial center be-came a productive neighborhood shop-ping center. The center, anchored by Stein Mart, Fresh ‘N Easy, and CVS Pharmacy, also includes 50,000 square feet of in-line shops.

Gateway Center Plaza features mod-

ern office, retail and commercial uses. This 20-acre mixed-use project has a 300-room Holiday Inn hotel, two office buildings, a light manufacturing/office building, restaurants and a 36,000 square foot Staples Superstore.

Housing projects assisted by the Redevelopment Agency’s efforts in co-operation with private developers have produced some 600 quality affordable housing units in La Mirada.

The La Mirada Redevelopment Agen-cy will work to finish projects currently in process, as allowed by law. These in-clude the current $9-million Foster Park Neighborhood Improvement and The Orchards 41-units housing development at the former Alondra North shopping center. These projects, like the numer-ous redevelopment efforts completed in La Mirada over the past 40 years, will provide a significant benefit for the La Mirada community.”

The statement concluded with “Local officials are hopeful that State legisla-tors will re-evaluate their earlier decision and restore local government’s ability to encourage economic growth and job cre-ation.”

Assemblyman TONY MENDOZA"I am disappointed that our cities

have lost this valuable funding resource. Redevelopment agencies were a great tool to improve communities and their loss sets the stage for an uncertain future. I will work to find a way to help our com-munities through other means."

St. Senator RONALD CALDERONCommunications Director Bob Jime-

nez for State Senator Calderon said the

lawmaker “has chosen to refrain from comment, given the complexity of the is-sue and the diversity of cities affected.” Jimenez confirmed that Calderon “wants to study the issue further before making comment.”

Assemblyman RICARDO LARA “I am greatly concerned and disheart-

ened over the California Supreme Court ruling on redevelopment. Although I agree it is the State's right to determine the future of the redevelopment program, which the State created, it is counterpro-ductive to strike down the voluntary opt-in program.”

“The legislative intent was always to fund successful economic and afford-able housing development while scaling back some activities enough to help fund education and local government. For the Southeast Los Angeles communities, re-development has also proven to be one of the best ways to address blight and browns field cleanup.

I am committed to work with our lo-cal cities, Assembly Speaker Perez and my legislative colleagues to address these issues in the most prudent manner.”

St. Senator ALAN LOWENTHALSt. Senator ALAN LOWENTHALSt. Senator“The Supreme Court’s decision should

come as no surprise to anyone who has been following the case. The question that now must be answered is, can the Legislature and Local Government work together to create a new agency that does not pit the need for local economic de-velopment against school children and public safety? I believe that if there is a will, there is away.”.

Phyllis White 1936 – 2011

By Helen M. Brown

A memorial service was held for Phyllis Arletta White at White’s Funeral, December 10, 2011. She was born November 19, 1936 in Commerce, OK and passed away November 23, 2011. She met and married Thomas Lee White February 19, 1954. They had three children; Glynise, Tim, and Cherlynn. Phyllis lived all of her married life in Bellflower.

Phyllis joined the Norwalk Woman’s Club (NWC) in 1991 where she devoted much of her time and many talents. She held many chairmanships and served as Club President from 1998 to 2000. She continued up through the ranks in the Los Cerritos District, serving 2 years as District President from 2004 to 2006. Her dedication and efforts will be sorely missed in both groups.

She and her family were active members of the Cornerstone Community Church in Bellflower for many years. She knitted over 100 hats for the homeless one year as a church project. Phyllis was a woman with many talents but all considered her greatest achievement as being a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, and Friend.

Phyllis is survived by daughter, Cherlynn and husband Randy Brand; son, Timothy White; two grandsons: Frank, and wife Cheri Stainbrook, Jason Stainbrook of Lakewood; three great-grandsons, Benjamin, Corey, and Ryan.

Three brazen burglary suspects were arrested by Norwalk deputies Tuesday morning.

Members of the Norwalk Sheriff's Department responded to a burglary in progess call at around 9:00 a.m. at the 13200 block of Flatbush Avenue.

Two female juveniles were home alone when they saw three males ring-ing the doorbell and banging on the door/windows of their residence. When the females did not answer the door and the suspects began taking the window screens off the windows to gain entry into the residence.

The females then immediately called their mother on her cell phone, who was just a short distance away, and also noti-fied Norwalk Sheriff’s Station via 911.

The mother of the females arrived shortly thereafter and saw the suspects drive away in their vehicle (1996 white Chevy Tahoe). The responding deputies

later found the suspect vehicle traveling on Rosecrans Avenue and conducted a felony traffic stop.

The suspects were detained pend-ing a field show-up and were positively identified by the victims. Dionandre Ste-venson, 19, and two other male juveniles were arrested for residential burglary and booked at Norwalk Sheriff’s Station.

construction bid by Griffith Company in the amount of $1,994,697.60. On Aug. 30, a pre-construction meeting was held with the city’s staff team, Griffith Com-pany and Steiny & Company. On Sept. 19, the Sanitation District’s contractor began the recent sewer project. Dadian said construction will begin sometime in mid-January.

The project consists of construction of sidewalk and roadway improvements, in-cluding but not limited to new landscaped center medians, new curbside landscape planters, new entry monuments, new street trees, new street furnishings and bike racks, pedestrian benches and trash receptacles.

The amount of $3 million has been al-

located from the Bond proceeds for the project. MW Petz has been retained at the cost of $133,688. Engineering cost ex-pended total $23,777 and does not include the amount of $75,200 for the design plans for infrastructure improvements.

The engineering costs for the design plans for the upgrade of traffic signal sys-tems includes a mid-block pedestrian traf-tems includes a mid-block pedestrian traf-tems includes a mid-block pedestrian traffic signal amounts to $39,500. The City Manager said to conclude the fiscal year 2010-11 the Agency staff has an allocation of $33,036 to assist in ongoing activities.

The final payment for services to MW Pelz totaled $101,195.10 the bid was awarded for the improvements to Griffith Company in the amount of $1,994,678.60.

Artesia CorridorIn other business the council approved

the rezoning of approximately 21 acres of real property along Artesia Boulevard between Gridley Road and Pioneer Bou-levard. Planning Director Okina Dor said the zone change will change the land use designation permitting the reconstruction and revitalization of the Artesia Boulevard Corridor.

Currently the area contains retail, ser-vice and professional, light to heavy man-ufacturing and industrial uses, single fam-ily residential and general commercial.

The city of Artesia is just under 1,040 acres in size. In 1993 the General Plan al-located approximately 166 acres of land for General Commercial and Service and Professional uses which is roughly16 per-cent of the total land of the city. Commer-cial development in Artesia is primarily located along Pioneer Boulevard, Artesia Boulevard, and South Street.

In his report to the council the Plan-ning Director noted in 2010 the council updated the city’s general plan to meet changing market conditions and demo-graphics. He said uses proposed for the corridor should be compatible with the zoning and existing uses in the immediate area with development standards allowing for flexibility, including building heights, densities, parking requirements and build-ing design. He also noted there were va-cant and underutilized sites along Artesia Boulevard that should be utilized to draw residents to the corridor from the city and the surrounding area.

The Council also presented Certificates of Recognition to the following bookmark winner: Grade K-2 category: Azalea Han, First grade from Kennedy Elementary School. Grade 3-5: Jordon Hilado, fourth grade from Kennedy Elementary School. Grade six through Grade six-eight cat-egory: Seon Gyoo Lee an eighth grader from Our Lady of Fatima School. Grade 9 through 12 category: Palak Oberol, ninth grader from Gahr High School.

nia, used to honor veterans’ graves on Memorial Day. Footage and reports re-veal that the couple also tried to remove a Christmas tree from the premises. So far there is no evidence of damage to any of the graves.

At the station, Fluharty and Ramirez admitted to breaking in and trespassing,

according to a media statement issued on Thursday morning.

When asked for a motive behind the act, they replied that they were simply looking for anything that could be of “monetary value.”

Cortez estimated the value of the damage to the cemetery building at “maybe $500 or less…we have to get our gate fixed again. The screen wasn’t too much, but it’s going to be at least a couple hundred dollars to fix the gate.”

The Artesia Cemetery District is a historical site that houses the graves of veterans from the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. It is located on 11142 E Artesia Blvd in Cerritos.

CERRITOSWeekly Crime SummaryDecember 26, 2011 to January 1, 2012

Cerritos deputies investigated 27 Part I felony crimes last week, down from 29 the previous reporting period. Vehicle burglary cases increased and vehicle thefts remained the same. Robberies, res-idential burglaries, and commercial bur-glaries were down. 249 calls for service were handled by patrol personnel, down from 298. The final average in weekly calls for service in 2011 was 272.

There was one robbery reported. On Tuesday December 27 at 3:15 p.m. a male shoplifting suspect threatened loss prevention employees at a retail store in the 10900 block of Alondra Boulevard and fled with merchandise.

Residential burglaries dropped from eight to six last week. Open/unlocked doors or windows were involved in four cases, and one sliding glass door was pried open. In the sixth burglary, a ga-rage door opener was taken from a ve-hicle that had been parked in the drive-way and used to access the garage and home. Jewelry, tools, a laptop computer, and a bicycle were stolen. The final 2011 weekly average in residential burglaries was 4.1.

Consider removing your garage door opener from any vehicle parked outside and take it into the home with you. Uti-lizing these openers is not an uncommon method to gain entry by burglars.

Commercial/“other structure” bur-glaries were down to one incident com-pared to three the week before. A cemetery in the 11100 block of Artesia Boulevard was the crime scene last week where two suspects were taken into custody and property was recovered. The final 2011 weekly average in commercial/“other structure” burglaries was 2.8.

Vehicle burglaries increased from nine to ten last week. Nine of the vehicles were in high-volume commercial parking lots. Eight were SUVs. Purses, checkbooks, backpacks, cameras, wallets, clothing, and credit cards were among the missing items. The 2011 weekly average in ve-hicle burglaries ended at 7.1.

The safest place to leave items inside of a vehicle is in your locked garage. Remember that wherever you park, you become “fair game” to any thief that can look inside of your vehicle and observe valuable property. Whether you park on a street, in a parking lot, or even your own driveway, the thin window that sep-arates your property from a thief is not any protection at all. Window smashes are the most reported points of entry in vehicle burglaries. Don’t become a vic-tim by giving a criminal the chance to make you one.

Vehicle thefts remained the same at three last week. Two were taken from high-volume commercial parking lots. Two

SUVs and a Honda were stolen. The final 2011 weekly average in vehicle thefts was 3.4.

None of these vehicles last week were equipped with a steering wheel locking device. A common complaint among motorists is that these devices are too cumbersome and take time to engage and remove. If you own one of the most commonly reported stolen vehicles in Cerritos, such as an 80’s or 90’s Honda or Toyota, or an SUV, we would suggest that one of these devices become part of your auto accessories.

To say that the Gahr girls basketball team had ample opportunities to capture the championship of its own Varsity Winter Classic would be a gross under-statement. The Gladiators trailed for the final three and a half quarters in their contest with Martin Luther King but they will be thinking about 15 particular uncontested shots that didn’t find the bottom of the basket.

Gahr missed 15 free throws, includ-ing six in the fourth quarter and lost to the Wolves 42-40 last Friday night. After scoring 16 points in the first half,

Gahr scored 16 in the fourth quarter alone to erase a 10-point deficit. But the hosts were two of eight from the charity stripe in the final eight minutes.

“Terrible, just terrible,” said Gahr head coach Al Dorogusker. “Also, our general handling of the ball wasn’t great. We didn’t have really outstanding shooting. But, I thought our defense was excellent. I thought they were fortunate on some of their shots. It was a tight match. If we play them 10 times, one of us wins six and the other one wins four.”

Gahr (11-3) was playing for the championship of its own tournament for the third time this century, having lost

by four points to Leuzinger five years ago and to Morningside in 2000. But the Gladiators found themselves digging out of a hole that wasn’t too big to handle against the Wolves.

Gahr was four of 19 from the field in the first quarter, hit just two more in the second quarter and trailed by 10 points midway through the second quarter before scoring the last five points of the half. MLK was doing a good job con-taining junior forward Jewelyn Sawyer (four points in the first half) and no Gahr player had more than four points in the half.

“I think there was a lot of tension out there,” Dorogusker said. “I don’t think the shooting was well. There were enough good shots but I think they were so tense that they were just looking to jack it up really quick.”

With 3:48 left in the third quarter, senior forward Alii Salone hit a pair of free throws to bring Gahr to within three points and moments later, a basket from Sawyer made it a 27-24 MKL advantage. But the Wolves went five of 11 from the field in the fourth quarter thanks to the play of tournament most valuable player Cydnie Jones. She scored half of her 14 points in the final stanza including the clinching basket with 1:21 remaining to make it 42-35.

“She’s really fast; she really took care of it,” Dorogusker said. “She put a lot of pressure on us. She’s a wonderful player and is probably the best player we’ve played against so far.”

Senior guard Zaneta Agu led Gahr with 11 points while Sawyer and junior guard Jasmine Gates each scored 10 points. Sawyer also had 17 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Salone grabbed seven boards and had two steals as Gahr got all of its scoring from the five starters.

Gahr began the tournament on Dec. 27 with an easy 76-16 win over New Millennium as Sawyer scored 22 points and sophomore guard Ra’vyn Bowser another dozen. The next day against San Juan Hills, Gahr went on a 15-0 first quarter run and built a 20-point lead in the second quarter en route to a 59-35 victory. Sawyer paced her team with 23 points, 17 rebounds and 13 steals. Agu pitched in with 10 points and six steals.

But the game of the tournament came last Thursday when Gahr ral-lied from an 11-point halftime deficit and beat Long Beach Wilson 56-46, holding the Bruins to 17 points in the second half. Sawyer scored another 23

points and had 17 rebounds. Through the first 14 games this season, Saw-yer has scored at least 20 points eight times. Salone and senior center Amalla Okaro each had 10 rebounds against the Bruins. Gahr visited Redondo this past Wednesday and will begin San Gabriel Valley League action on Wednesday with a road game against Paramount.

Elsewhere in the tournament, the Suburban League got an early preview of a pair of teams who hope to stay near the top of the circuit when Cerritos faced Norwalk last Friday evening in the consolation championship game. Despite a career-high 26 points and 18 rebounds from Norwalk senior center Nia Lateju, who was snubbed from any all-tournament honors, Cerritos used its speed from its young players coupled with the experience from three start-ers to edge the Lady Lancers 52-50. Cerritos had to hold off a furious fourth quarter rally by Norwalk and the game wasn’t decided until Norwalk was called for traveling with 2.6 seconds left. That came after Cerritos freshman Jazmine Langford scored off a pass from fresh-man Alyssa Movchan with six seconds remaining.

It was the second straight win for Cerritos (5-8) which came off the heels of four straight losses that saw the Lady Dons score no more than 39 points during that time. As noted by several Suburban League coaches who scouted the Lady Dons all week long, this is a much improved team from the one that went 2-21 last season.

“Cerritos found its game in this tournament,” said Norwalk head coach Richard Drake. “They found it in the third game and in this fourth game. I think the light switch has been turned on and I think they’re going to be tough in all 12 games in the Suburban League. I think they are a top three team and they could be in the top one or two.”

“We brought up a lot of freshmen and they’re small but they’re pretty fast,” said Cerritos senior Ashley Juarez said. “They know how to get the ball and use their speed right.”

Cerritos raced out the gates quick with a 14-3 lead before the first quarter ended as all five starters combined for seven of the eight steals it got in the opening stanza. Senior Katey Kana-moto, junior Deshields Fajardo and Movchan all scored four points in the first quarter which ended with a 16-11 lead. Cerritos increased its lead again to 11 points, 25-14, late in the half behind

a three-pointer from Juarez and baskets from Fajardo, Kanamoto and Langford before the Lady Lancers put a small dent into that lead to trail by six at the half.

“Speed kills,” Drake said. “People who are fast are hard to guard. That’s why I had a guard who never fouls out, foul out tonight. I had two other guards who had four fouls. Speed kills and that’s what [Cerritos] has. They’re go-ing to create problems in the Suburban League.”

Norwalk (9-5) was still within strik-ing distance late in the third quarter but the Lady Dons went on a small 5-0 run that ended with a steal and basket from Movchan, who is tied with Kanamoto as the leading scorer. But Lateju wouldn’t allow her team to go down without a fight. With senior point guard Larissa Perez and junior guard Cristina Ba-tarse in foul trouble, Lateju scored on consecutive three-point plays to begin the fourth quarter. After Langford hit a pair of free throws, Norwalk went on a 7-0 run with Lateju tying the game on one of her nine offensive rebounds. With 4:06 left, the Lady Lancers took their first lead thanks to senior guard Michelle Pulido.

“I just think we matched up a little bit better in the fourth quarter,” Drake said. “We had foul trouble that hurt us a little bit. We had to sit Michelle and La-rissa the whole third quarter, basically. But I thought some kids on the bench helped step their game up.”

Lateju scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 50-50 with 19 seconds remaining before Cerritos called a timeout.

“We were trying to box her out the best we could,” Juarez said. “She was the reason why they were winning. She’s getting all of their rebounds and almost all of their points. We need to box her out the next time we play them.”

Norwalk junior forward Jazzlyn Gaxiola scored nine points and had four rebounds while senior guard Rainye Gutierrez came off the bench to score six points in the third quarter.

Kanamoto and Juarez each scored 11 points to lead Cerritos while Movchan added 10 points. Kanamoto also had five steals while Fajardo, Juarez and Movchan all had three steals. Some were opposed to the two league teams playing in a non league game but to Juarez, it didn’t matter at all.

“No, it didn’t,” Juarez said. “We should still win. We should still do well and play hard. It’s better if we play them and know what they’re going to do.”

Cerritos opened the tournament with a 54-36 loss to Sonora as Movchan scored 12 points and Kanamoto another 10, then was blasted by Long Beach Wilson 66-22 as Juarez led the team with seven points. Last Thursday, Cerri-tos knocked off San Juan Hills 62-48 as Juarez scored a season-high 18 points, grabbed five rebounds and had three steals. Langford and sophomore Jes-sica Ignacio came off the bench to each score eight points.

“We want to get up there [in the standings],” Juarez said. “Winning league would be nice but Mayfair is pretty tough and so is Bellflower.”

Norwalk began the tournament by crushing St. Matthias 52-19 behind 19 points from Lateju, then lost a heart-breaking 30-27 decision to Sonora as Batarse and junior forward Maiya Griffin-McNair each scored six points. The Lady Lancers came back to get by Gardena 47-41 last Thursday as Lateju scored 20 points and pulled down 18 rebounds.

Cerritos and Norwalk will meet again on Jan. 20 at Cerritos to wrap up the first round of league play.

Also in the tournament was Artesia, which was destroyed by Long Beach Wilson 102-7 and barely lost to San Pedro 37-33 before getting its fifth win of the season last Thursday against St. Matthias, 44-23. Last Friday, the Pioneers fell to New Millennium 53-39. Junior Angie Avila, who transferred from Cerritos, led the Pioneers with 14, 19 and 11 points in succession in the final three games. Junior Tangeray Beverly, another transfer from Cerritos, also scored 11 points against New Mil-lennium.

ARTESIA CONTINUES PROGRAM’S BEST START, BLANKS GAHRBy Loren Kopff

Rudy Magallon, the longtime head coach of over 15 years for the Artesia boys soccer program is off to probably the best start in school history. He also has a chance to do something that has probably never been accomplished-win the Suburban League in consecutive seasons.

After the Pioneers blasted Gahr 7-0 last Friday afternoon in a make-up game

from Dec. 12, there seems to be no stop-ping the team in the near future. Artesia improved to 9-1 and has outscored the opposition 35-5. The lone blemish was a 3-0 setback to Millikan as the second ranked team in the California Interscho-lastic Federation-Southern Section Divi-sion IV poll hopes to win its fifth league title in the past 15 seasons.

“Our schedule is pretty tough but I think the experience that we had last year kept the kids hungry,” Magallon said. “Even the Millikan game that we lost, we were in it. If the ball bounced our way, [the outcome] could have been something else. Hopefully this gets us prepared for a tough Suburban League.

“I think the kids have that Salesian [quarterfinal] loss in their heads and they want to be the best,” he added. “I cut the season into four-preseason, league, CIF and [state] regionals. I think they believe and some of the young guys are coming along.”

The game was scoreless until the 19th minute when sophomore forward Arturo Garcia scored on a pass from ju-nior midfielder Francisco Sanchez. Four minutes later, Garcia took a corner kick and found sophomore midfielder Ari Claro who headed in the game’s second goal. Then in the 30th minute, junior forward Alejandro Martinez added to the party as the Pioneers were sitting pretty as they scored at least three times in a game for the eighth time. By halftime, Artesia had taken 10 shots on goal to none by the Gladiators (2-2-1).

“My players, because of the familiar-ity, allowed too much respect for Arte-sia,” said Gahr head coach Jim Keating. “I think they gave them too much room. We had a game plan that we didn’t stick to and [Artesia] kind of exploited that. It’s always disappointing to lose but it’s also disappointing to not play to your potential.”

Artesia junior forward Alfonso Borja had a chance to get into the scoring column in the 51st minute but his shot hit the crossbar. He redeemed himself four minutes later and again in the 58th minute. The last two goals were scored by senior midfielder Jose Garcia, both in the final two minutes with the last com-ing on a rebound after Gahr sophomore goalkeeper Enrique Aguilar stop a shot from freshman forward Miguel Razo.

The Pioneers, who will host Cer-ritos on Wednesday and visit La Mirada on Friday, have a very balanced attack led by Jose Garcia, Martinez and senior forward Jose Ramirez, all with six goals and Borja with five goals. Nine other players have combined for the other 12 goals

“I tell the kids in soccer, the goals are

sometimes hard to come by,” Magallon said. “I don’t keep stats and I don’t have a stats person. Sometimes I don’t know [who has scored]. It’s just kids stepping up.”

Even with only five games played, the Gladiators have had a roller coaster season. Their tie came against Norwalk, which challenges Artesia every season for the league’s top spot. Their two wins have come against the other ABC Uni-fied School District foes by a combined 17-1 score while the other loss came to El Rancho by four goals. Gahr is off until Jan. 10 when it visits San Gabriel Valley League powerhouse Paramount.

“Every game is different and this game is history,” Keating said. “We have 10 games ahead of us and now we start preparing for Paramount
