“A warm and friendlyatmosphere is most conduciveto successful learning”

A welcome from the HeadIt is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Benedict House Preparatory School. I hope our prospectus gives you a glimpse of what our school has to offer you and your family.

Benedict House Prep school is known for its small class sizes, warm family environment and academic excellence. We pride ourselves on the positive relationships we foster within our school community. Each child and adult achieves more if they feel valued, cared for and happy. We have small classes which allows our staff to give an individualised and well-tailored education to each child in their care.

We guide our families through their journey with us towards their secondary school. These are chosen carefully and in partnership with parents, by matching a child’s academic ability, character and personality to their recommended future school. Our children achieve highly in the classroom,on the sports field, on the stage and in our music department. We give them many opportunities to succeed through our diverse and varied curriculum.

The only way to appreciate the type of school we are is to book a personal tour. From the moment you walk through our front door you will feel a sense of happiness, purpose and well-being. If you would like to see our school in action, it would be a pleasure to show you around.

About Benedict HouseBenedict House is located in a quiet, residential, tree-lined road and has been teaching boys and girls aged from 2½ to 11 for many years. Our children have always been drawn from diverse backgrounds and a widecross-section of the social and cultural spectrum. Our parents include many local people, as well as those who commute daily from outlying areas into central London.

“Noted for the the excellence of its teaching”

Benedict House has always been noted for the excellence of its teaching and the consequent high standard of academic achievement among its pupils. The children are well prepared for the challenge of secondary school and our success rate is unparalleled among local state and independent schools, with a consistently high percentageof pupils gaining entry into selective Grammar Schools.

An Ofsted visit found that “The teachers are well informed, enthusiastic and committed. Relationships between adults and pupils are good, leading to an extremely positive climate in classrooms, promoting effective learning.”

The children at Benedict House benefit from a well rounded education at highly competitive fees.

Academic life

The relationship between teacher and child is at the centre of the Benedict House learning experience. We cultivate a caring, family atmosphere in which all children can feel relaxed and at home; where staff get to know every child in the school, and not just those in their own classes.

“We aim to bring the benefits ofself-improvement and confidencethrough theenjoyment of school life.”

With each child, our teachers:

· promote the joy of learning· develop personal potential· dispel the fear of failure· nurture self-confidence and a sense of self-worth· develop study skills and powers of concentration· encourage kindness and consideration for others

Academic success relies on applying these principles across a broad curriculum and using specialist teaching for subjects such as Music, PE/Games, French and Spanish.

Our regular monitoring of each child’s progress means that any learning barrier, whether short or long term, is quickly spotted. Corrective help and support is provided by specialist teachers who work with children on a one-to-one basis. How we focus on children of all abilities across the range is central to our approach to teaching and learning.

Culture

Regular visits are arranged to places of cultural, historical, geographical and scientific interest as well as to museums, art galleries and theatres both locally and in London. Year 5 and Year 6 pupils have an opportunity to embark upon residential visits in England or overseas.

The children enjoy and embrace the modern foreign languages offered at the school, which are timetabled very early on inthe Lower School. French lessons begin from Reception and Spanish from Year 1 onwards.

Children are encouraged to select books on a weekly basis from our well stocked Library which is situated next to our IT suite.

Music is timetabled weekly for all classes with our specialist music teacher who also runs our school choir and weekly whole school singing practice. Children of all ages are provided the opportunityto learn other instruments such as the drums, piano, guitar and violin. The school puts on shows at Christmas and the end of the academic year.

Sports

We believe in nurturing the physical well-being of our pupils through sport and promote inclusive, active and enthusiastic participation.

All classes and all children participate in a broad range of physical activities throughout the year including: football, touch rugby, netball, gymnastics, dance, cricket, rounders, athletics and swimming. We employ specialist coaches to deliver our sports tuition and to ensure pupils get the most from their involvement in terms of their physical development, aptitude and enjoyment.

In addition to our own recreation area, we are fortunate to have the use of extensive, specialist sports facilities. These include large pitches, netball courts and local swimming pools, all of which are within a short walk from Benedict House.

Children are encouraged to learn to swim from Year 1 and are coached in proficiency and life-saving techniques. Swimming takes place once a week throughout the year.

Pastoral care

Fundamental to the success of every child in school is a well-ordered and caring community.

It is only when children feel safe and secure in their environmentthat they can develop all their gifts and talents to the full. We expect the highest standards of behaviour and courtesy. We also seek to encourage self-discipline and an awareness of the positive contribution that each child can make to school life by using a House System and monitors.

We strongly believe that the closer the affinity between staff and parents, the greater the benefits to our children. That is why we attach such value to growing the partnership between home and school. It strengthens the sense of family we promote at Benedict House. Parents are welcome to discuss their child’s progress with teachers at any time. Most are available at the end of school; alternatively appointments to see a class teacher or the head teacher can be made through the school office.Scheduled open evenings are held in the Autumn and Spring Terms and are followed by written reports in February and July.

“The closerthe affinity and contact between staff and parents the greater the benefits to our children”

We also try out different ideas each term and are very open to suggestions from families for activities that interest our children.
