Dept. or Department?

• In August 2010, LC requested comments on a proposal to revise AACR2 headings using the abbreviation “Dept.”

• Library community generally supported it, but there was no clear mandate

• LC will not change headings with the abbreviation “Dept.” to the fuller form “Department” at this time

• Vai language romanization table– Approved by the ALA Committee on Cataloging:

• Now includes personal names from 18 national libraries and other research institutions

• Test records from three other institutions are under review

• Corporate name data from some of the participating institutions has been added since August 2010

AC Program Renamed

• Annotated Card (AC) Program– Purpose: “To provide a more appropriate and in-

depth subject treatment of juvenile titles and to offer easier subject access to those materials.”

• Now called the Children’s and Young Adults’ Cataloging Program – Children’s Subject Headings

• Application of headings and MARC coding (second indicator “1”) are unchanged

Cookery/Cooking

• On June 2, 2010 “Cookery” was revised to “Cooking” wherever it appeared in LCSH

• PSD received 98 overwhelmingly favorable comments on the proposed change

• SHM H 1475, Cooking and Cookbooks, was revised and distributed in Update #2 (2010)

• 788 authority records updated• 40,000 bibliographic records revised to date;

60,000 remaining– Will be revised manually, one at a time– New genre/form heading Cookbooks will

• First pass is complete for strings used twenty or more times

• Over 80,000 validation records now exist

072 Pilot Project

• PSD will add MARC 21 field 072 (Subject Category Code) to subject authority records beginning in the first half of 2011– Will contain the instruction sheet number(s) for

applicable pattern and free-floating subdivisions– Reciprocal with the 073 in subdivision authority

records

• SACO libraries may not add or edit the field at this time

• Subject Headings Manual is written for humans, not computers– Appropriateness (e.g., --Aerial operations used

under Thirty Years’ War, 1618-1648?)– Exceptions to general rules (e.g., footnotes, cross-

references)– Multi-part instruction sheets (e.g., H 1156)

• Physically coding tens of thousands of existing records

• Goal: To allow for computer manipulation of subject heading strings– To validate cataloger-assigned heading strings– To suggest appropriate subdivisions

New Heading Proposal System

• Includes LCSH, LCGFT, and Children’s Subject Headings– Will offer numerous templates for particular types

of subject headings• Similar to the Classification Proposal System

– User names and passwords for the two systems will be the same

• Will be implemented in early 2011 for all proposals for new and revised headings

Law Project

• Approximately 80 terms were approved on November 3rd

• Culmination of a successful partnership with the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL)

• LC will implement the terms in early 2011• Few religious law terms have been proposed or

approved to date• PSD is seeking partners to help develop genre/form

terms for religious law

• Vetting lists of terms to determine which are forms and genres– Have agreed on approximately 800 genre/form terms to

date

• Developing a list of mediums of performance and discussing where to place them in MARC bibliographic records
