Rules for shelving

The first line is always a Letter Line and is filed alphabetically. The second line is a Whole Number line and is filed numerically. (Sometimesthe second line is decimalized and continued on the same line. Anytime yousee a decimal point, always take each space separately (do not consider it awhole number).Generally the third line is a Author Line -- last name of the author (up to fourletters).Letters before numbers. No date comes before a date. (Generally all have a date)

Ignore the suffix CHI and JPN at the end of monographs.

Shelving by format--REF/f/P

Shelving a book is simply putting that book back where it belongsusing the LCC system. The main stacks are arranged by subject (A-Z).Each row of shelves has a sign that states the general LCC range inthat row. Please note that all books marked “REF” on the spine belong in thereference area. A “REF” book should never go in the circulatingstacks area; likewise, a book for the circulating collection shouldnever go in the reference stacks. "f" represents the folio area and "P"

represents periodicals/journals. When you find the "correct" place for the book, double check theshelf order. Sometimes the books on the shelf are out of order and theentire row or rows need to be ordered.

Edging

Edging books is a very simple part of stackmaintenance. Pull the books close to the edge ofthe shelf and even out the row. Sometimes thebooks have been sloppily shelved by a patron, orjust moved back from browsing. To ensure that thebooks are easily accessible to other patrons, it isgood to edge them so that the patron can easily seethe call number and spine title of the book.

Spacing

There should be sufficient room on each shelf toaccommodate the end brace and extra space forbook re-shelving. Sometimes a shelf looks almostempty. This can be because many books from thatshelf are in use, but often it is the result of haphazardre-shelving. Each collection varies in how muchshelf room it has for all of its books, but justremember to leave an even amount of space at theend of every shelf--usually about 1/4 of the totalshelf space. Do not crowd shelves or cramp books!
