Paper • US$ 57.95 • 288 pages • 19.05 x 23.50 cm. • 04/09/2013

Rights sold to previous editions: Japanese (Wiley)

The 4th edition of Beer and McMurrey’s A Guide to Writing as an Engineer provides more than technical

know-how and focuses on how to be an effective communicator. This new edition helps to eliminate the glitches that trip up the busy reader or listener, causing annoyance, confusion, or misunderstanding so that their writing and speech are crystal clear. Written for engineers, this text also focuses on the technical writing and speaking issues encountered in day to day work, writing reports, business letter, memoranda, proposals, emails, presentations, and more. The text presents two different Engineering Codes of Ethics (IEEE and ABET) showing how engineers and/or student interns can implement these codes on the job if faced with an ethical decision.

Hallmark features include guidance on how to: eliminate “noise” from writing – grammatical errors, typos, poor organization, and unclear phrasing; create effective professional engineering documents, such as inspection and trip reports, laboratory reports, specifications, progress reports, proposals, instructions, and recommendation reports; communicate visually with PowerPoint and other graphic tools; stand out from the competition with better application letters and resumes; and avoid plagiarism and other ethical pitfalls that engineering writers encounter.

New to this edition: new coverage of social media, beginning in Chapter 1 and addressed throughout the book, including coverage of popular forms, best practices, and dangers and ethics of using social media; substantial updates to Chapter 8, “Accessing Engineering Information,” covering the use of search engines and Wikipedia, including guidelines on evaluating sources and giving proper citations; and expanded coverage of informal communication in Chapter 9.

How Things Work uses familiar objects to introduce basic physics concepts, demonstrating the excitement and relevance to professionals in a variety of technical fields. Because its structure is defined by real-life examples, this book explores concepts as they are needed and then revisits them later on when they reappear in other objects. It integrates case studies throughout the chapters to easily convey an understanding and appreciation for physics. For example, discussions of skating, falling balls, and bumper cars are included to explain the Laws of Motion. Air conditioners and automobiles are used to explore thermodynamics. Engineers, architects, and professionals in other technical fields will benefit from the material that connects science to our everyday world.

Bloomfield’s 5th edition of How Things Work includes revisions similar to previous editions including two to

three new applications per chapter, a refreshment of the assessment content (eoc problems, test items, etc.) and the strengthening of the WileyPLUS content.

This title is appropriate for students of physics, and also general interest readers curious about how everyday objects work.

Cloth • US$ 102.95 • 416 pages • 21.59 x 27.94 cm. • 04/29/2013

Understanding Physical Chemistry takes an innovative approach to teaching Physical Chemistry, in which the emphasis is placed on the most central and more modern topics such as biotechnology, quantum computing, and nanoscience, covering them in depth. Dr. Ben-Amotz attempts to demystify the core concepts by explaining where they come from, why they make sense, and how they may be applied to understanding topics ranging from molecular spectroscopy and chemical reactivity to biological self-assembly and liquid computer simulation strategies. The organization facilitates seamless integration of quantum and classical degrees of freedom into the chemical thermodynamics, before delving into the systematic development of quantum mechanics, molecular spectroscopy and chemical reaction dynamics. The book retains a fairly traditional sequence of topics, all built upon a solid quantum mechanical foundation. In this ground-breaking textbook, Ben-Amotz reveals the personal perspectives and early conceptual struggles of scientists such as Albert Einstein, Ludwig Boltzmann and Josiah Willard Gibbs -- each of whom became pioneers in the difficult field.

Dor Ben-Amotz is a professor of Physical Chemistry at Purdue University. He received his B.A. in 1976 from Bennington College, his M.A. in 1981 from Brandeis University and his Ph.D. in 1986 from the University of California, Berkeley. Ben-Amotz was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Exxon Corporate Research Laboratory from 1986-1989. Since beginning his career at Purdue in 1989, he has mentored and provided hands-on research opportunities to more than 40 undergraduate students.

Paper • US$ 90.00 • 704 pages • 20.32 x 25.40 cm. • 11/03/2014

Barnett's Applied Probability and Statistics breaks down artificial conceptual barriers by exposing students to a wide variety of challenging real-world problems drawn from a variety of subject areas. Under that perspective, the text puts a very high value on showing the result’s plausibility. Beyond teaching specific methods, the text strives to create real comfort with the central notions of probabilistic and statistical thinking. Applied Probability and Statistics includes a large inventory of examples and exercises, and conversational, clear writing. This text strikes a balance between the need to understand topics fully but with the recognition that the reader is not a mathematician.

Arnold Barnett received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973, where he currently teaches. He has been the professor of Operations Research, Sloan School of Management, from 1987 to present, and in 1998 was named George Eastman Professor of Management Science. He was also the 2001 recipient of the Expository Writing Prize of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.
