This made sense when books were civilisation’s primary way of storing and distributing knowledge. However with the advent of information technology and the Internet, our predominant source of knowledge has shifted from the printed page to the pixels on our screens. By refocusing the library on knowledge it can become a place to expand understanding, discover new worlds and induce productivity and creativity — an evolution to the next century of learning. This project aims to reevaluate the terms with which we design libraries in the 21st century.

Traditionally the library is synonymous with books. This made sense when books were civilisation’s primary way of storing and distributing knowledge. However with the advent of information technology and the Internet, our predominant source of knowledge has shifted from the printed page to the pixels on our screens.

We have the opportunity to rethink the traditional notion of the library. By refocusing the library on knowledge it can become a place to expand understanding, discover new worlds and induce productivity and creativity — an evolution to the next century of learning.

The geometry of the building is organised in relation to preexisting site conditions.

Firstly the topography of the site.

Secondarily the grid orientation of the new development.

Thirdly the grid of the old quarter of Madrid

Then finally by combining these individual geometries, a mesh can be formed that is specific to this site and which can be used to build from.
