First and foremost, most of the information I plan on sharing is not my information, but rather from the over 140 plus hours of interviews with top NCAA Lacrosse Coaches. I really do not deserve any of the credit; it must go to all the awesome coaches that were so willing to share, Next, many of you will be saying, “My kids are not that talented… they can’t go both ways…” Actually, most all of the drills can be run at the HS and Youth Level (perhaps more just 3V2)… just keep the pace very fast, and have three of four bucketsd of balls, kids do not get better at their stickwork by hunting balls, OK, so what have we learned from the NCAA Coaches? And how does it apply to Generation Z Players… Recent NCAA Practice Trends over the last two years… ✓ Evolving Practice Schedule Sequence ✓ Practice Time Outs- Half time, Man Up/Down ✓ Explain why ✓ When Classroom is Better - Film Increments ✓ Pace, Pace, Pace ✓ Increase in “Crunch Drills” ✓ Increase in Skeleton Drills The Traditional Practice Plan is Evolving…

So when you prepare your practice plans, please look at each drill and the sequence and run them through the seven keys or filters above… Lacrosse Practice Plans,

1. Essential 2. Do not need to be complicated 3. Focus on Pace and Touches 4. To share or not to share…

a. Many coaches believe the element of surprise in practice or the unexpected, is more consistent with the unknown momentum and ebbs and flows of a game situation,

Pre-Season Practice Planning Most of us at the HS Level might only have two weeks to prepare for our first game, thus the planning or more importantly the prioritization of planning those first weeks of pratice is critical!

Perhaps a quick checksheet might help in your planning,

The following are the common denominators in the keys to a successful practice plan for Generation Z…

! Why, -- Remember Millennials Question Authority…

! Fun ! Must Emulate Game Scenario ! Different Each Day ! Focus on Touches ! Pace, Pace, Pace ! Multi Task

✓ Basic Offense ✓ Basic Slide Package (2) ✓ Man Up ✓ Man Down ✓ A few plays for out of bounds ✓ Transition Drills ✓ Fast Breaks ✓ Freezing the Ball on Offense ✓ Capturing the Ball on Defense ✓ Rides (one or two) ✓ Clears

✓ Substitutions from the box or midfield, or defensive middies ✓ Double Teams ✓ Ground Balls ✓ Conditioning ✓ 4V4 ✓ 6V6 1✓ 0V10 ✓ Playing a Zone ✓Beating a Zone

✓ Setting Picks ✓ Defending Picks, (Big/✓ Little, or Little/Big) ✓Identifying Matchups, Offensive and Defensive ✓ Defensive Stick Position, (Take away the middle) ✓ Offensive Formations, and how we run out of them, 3-2-1, 2-2-2, 1-4-1

Critical!!

1. Fun 2. 7-10 min duration 3. Different Drills every day 4. Emulate Game Scenarios

Macro Level, Before the Season…

o One Clear o One Ride o One Man Up o Play from X o Play w 15 seconds o One Slide Package o “Motion” or 2-Man Principles

As you can see, there is a lot to think about… perhaps prioritizing one or two clears, a basic man up, etc… but regardless we must have a plan, A sample Practice Paln might feature, the drills, the coach running the drill, and I love to look at “touches.” Our goal is 200 touches in the first hour, (so pace is critical) and 300 touches or as close as we can come in the full practice. Warm Up… Running laps and doing sit ups, is a great way for you to talk about lunch… not the best way to prepare your team, dynamic stretching will take care of all of that, this is not 1970’s football anymore…. There I said it… You can accomplish all this and get touches, with a little creativity… but remember to emulate game situations or scenarios… Practice Plans, The Teachers Tool Box… Practice Plans – Not Just A Schedule But A Tool

! Fit into Master Plan, example Rides and Clears ! Face Off and Wing Play ! Identified Areas, Offense and Defense for Focus

! Off Ball Cutters ! 2 Man Games ! Inside Play or Fast breaks ! Ground ball work

! Conditioning/Physicality ! Competition Elements

Critical!!

5. Fun 6. 7-10 min duration 7. Different Drills every day 8. Emulate Game Scenarios

There are so many ways to be successful,

! Some coaches break the practice into Qtrs or Three Segments ! Some copaches have a theme for each day ! Some coaches have stayed with the fundamental sequence model ! Some coaches go with a drill in the Box, then a full field, then a short field etc, ! A high percentage have moved to more transition drills over ‘even’ drills ! However, in every drill, fundamentals are still fundamentals…

Practice Planning for Youth Lacrosse Players… These key tips have worked for me,

! 90 Min ! Shooting Drills for Warm Up ! Vary Positions 5V5 Short Field ! A Ton of 3V2 Drills ! Add One Drills ! New Drill, Two Days, ! Change Drills

So with all this being said… How many drills do I need? Just some quick thoughts, in our interviews with NCAA Lacrosse coaches and their drills I believe we have 25-30 ways to run a basic 3V2 configuation alone…with a little creativity…

• Remember, 86% of Goals in Transition • Any Drill Can be Four Drills…

– Change Location of O and D, Front, Behind, or 70 yds out – Change Numbers (ex 5V5) – Add One or Two – Begin w a 1V1 GB

• Practicing Rides and Clears Suck…

– End every drill w clear… – Begin a transition drill with a clear

3V2 Swing Drills

3V3 Add One w & w/o Ball

We can turn this basic drill into a number of different drills that all emulate game scenarios. Put the D up top Have two offensive locations behind Make it a 4V3 Overload a side

The idea of this drill is to emulate a player getting ‘beat’ either with the ball, or perhaps off ball depending on who we choose to “add” And if we add up top (simulating a middie not paying attention) or from behind, It could be a 4V4 or 5V5 Or it could be run in anyu configuration with a trailer

1V1 Attack GB’s to 3V2

Clear to 3V2

This is a great way to make any drill different, and multi-task, The 1V1 GB (winner stays) is a great way to change up a drill, either with GB’s behind, in the alley, or up top

Again, we can make this drill look a lot different by adding an attackman chasing, and then adding a D Middie entering the drill from up top, Or have three defensemen in the clear (a breakout from the crease to catch a pass after the re-direct_ With four lines up top at the midfield, be creative!

The Night Drill, 3V2 “In a Box” to Transition to 4V3

“Crunch Drills” Shorten the Playing Area, Back to Front or….“Crunch Drills” Side to Side – “Toggle”

Keep the basic drill in place, but add anoth offensive and defensive player anywhere you like. Or run the initial 3V2 Box keep-a-way behind, noe we have three of four drills…

Coaching Your demeanor sets the tone…more than you know, This is perhaps the most critical topic of the day, get ready… you have an incredibly important responsibility as a leader and coach. And the kids follow your lead not your words. Trust is a huge factor in leadership.

" Concise " Control " Confident

Your actions speak so much louder than your words… If you raise your voice or loose it on the sideline, but reprimand your players for the same type of actions, you are a hypocrite.
