LAWSON’S LATEST 6 MAY 2016 TERM 2 ISSUE 2 THE HENRY LAWSON HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE, ENCOURAGE, ACHIEVE 49 SOUTH STREET, GRENFELL NSW 2810 02 6343 1390 [email protected] Congratulations to our 9/10 agriculture students who competed at Dubbo over last weekend. Mrs Baker said they were a great group of students who worked really well as a team, doing all the mucking up work as well as ensuring that stud sheep looked their best for the judging. There were over 250 students competing this year, a big increase on previous years. Again our South Suffolk sheep were very competitive, a ram, taking out reserve champion, and a second tooth ram taking out a first place in their class. The junior parading was very competitive, with the judges having to be very fastidious about how the students presented the animals; though our students learnt a lot they were out-classed by more confident and experienced paraders. In the junior judging of the meat sheep, Marie Knight came second out of 122 students, and in the senior section Sophie Piper came sixth out of 125 students. Well done. The students looked great in their new shirts. Thanks to the P&C for their support. Thanks to all the parents who assisted especially Kelli Thomson-Jones and Peter Brown. Your support helps to provide our students with valuable learning and life experiences. Students from Years 9 to 12 have had opportunities to consider the next step after secondary education this week. Years 9 and 10 visited the Job Expo at Young and Years 11 and 12 went to the Tertiary Awareness Day at Forbes. They all came back with bags and brochures and lots of ideas about the possibilities beyond school and what they needed to access the next step. Hearing from university students studying different courses, our students were able to gain a deeper understanding of course expectations and the nature of the learning. What the students are learning is that universities are setting standards about school achievement level: entry into teaching requires at least a band 5 in English and a maths course, and Sydney University is the first uni to say if you want to study a science or maths based subject you need to have studied 2 unit mathematics in the HSC. Frazer Ryder has been selected as a possible/probable for the under 16s Combined High School Rugby union team – an amazing achievement. The open girls touch team competed in the gala day at Mudgee last week. Coach, Mr Harris, said the competition standard was very high and even though the team didn’t win a game, they certainly improved throughout the day. The players, very gracious in defeat were full of praise for the level of skills in the teams they played. The boys open tennis played their first round against Canowindra. The team of Dan Edwards, Hamish Starr, Jesse Thomson-Jones and Aaron Mawhinney played well to win the round. They will now play Parkes. Our festival queen, Amanda Livingstone has a fundraiser on this weekend. As much as some of us might be confronted by it, at the end we will all feel great. Join the boot camp this Sunday at Lawson Oval from 9.00am. The P&C will be there doing the registration and will also be drawing the Mother’s Day raffle. Come along and support our queen and give yourself a healthy invigorating start to the day.

All of the new uniform is now available through the canteen. Students can still wear the pale blue polo shirts and sloppy joes and as new items are required, buy the new uniform. Students have been told, that track suit trousers and sports shorts are Wednesday wear and that they do need to be wearing either trousers or dress shorts or skirts the other days of the week. If students don’t have these items yet, they do need to be purchased and worn. It is great to see so many students coming dressed in all the new uniform. They look good as so many have commented already.

On Friday afternoon, the process of transferring our technology network will commence. On Monday, the process will systemically work through every computer in the school as all computers are re-imaged to operate through the new server. On Monday classrooms may be more like they were 20 years ago.

On Monday afternoon, teachers will be completing the first two modules of How2Learn, professional learning that looks at the nature of learning and how we teach our students to be life-long learners. The teachers from Grenfell Public School will also be joining us in this learning. Modules 3 and 4 will be completed on Tuesday 31 May. These two evening sessions will be in lieu of working on 20 December.

Well-being Corner“The longer I live, the more I realise the impact

of attitude on life.”Charles Swindoll

The author of this quote goes on to say: “Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other

people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift, or skill. The remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day … we

are in charge of our attitudes. This coming week:

I’ll choose my attitude wisely and positively.
