Time to CelebrateIt's hard to believe another year has gone by here at Lavish. I feel like we were

just writing this piece yesterday, in awe, over completing our first year. This May celebrates our second year and twenty issues in circulation. I still remember putting

the final touches on our first issue, and the excitement I had while we were at press. I don't think I slept more than a couple of hours each night from the day we uploaded to our printer, to the day leading into our launch. I was so nervous about the reaction and how our communities would receive another publication. Well as it turns out, I had nothing to stress about as everyone was extremely welcoming and excited to have a new, fresh look out an about. I'm not going to sit back and say it was easy, as it was not! However, with the support of our loyal readers and clients, we were able to pull through and build up enough following to acheive this milestone and have our presence in this community as we do today. I could not be more thankful for everyone who helped make this possible, and look forward to many more years to come! Looking into this issue and right around the corner for Mother's Day, we highlighted some of our area's amazing breakfast and brunch spots for the biggest brunch day of the year! Not a breakfast fan? I'm sure the photos will entice you to change your mind and leave you hungry! Also making it's monthly presence is our Essential Transitional. Runway Boutique has shown us all again some amazing pieces that are staples in your closet this spring season. Looking for a getaway? Read on for an amazing journey as our travel editors head to Ireland. They paved the way and give some great tips on what to see and do!

Once again, thank you all for your loyal readership and an amazing two years. I am beyone grateful. See you in June!

ARTICLE Consignment

BY KELSEY WEHSELS Article Consignment has you covered. Literally. Priding itself on its attention to customer service, the consignment shop certainly provides a unique consignment shopping experience. Owned by husband and wife duo, Abraham and Val Sanchez, Article Consignment has become a fixture in the East Sacramento community. “We have had great luck with the business to business support,” said Abraham. “It’s a really good networking culture and we have been well received by the small business community.” The store came about when Abraham got laid off from his construction engineering

people bring in say, Forever 21 or H&M, we cannot compete with their sale rack prices.”He also explains that their quality of inventory has increased, and it can be a struggle to see all the fashions coming in. “Luckily I’m not a female,” he said with a laugh. “I wouldn’t be able to control myself.” However, Val is a different story. “She’s not into all the brand names,” he said. “She’ll just say ‘sell it, get rid of it,’” he said. The current item he’s pining for? A Louis Vuitton keychain. “Val asked me ‘what the heck are you going to do with that?’” said Abraham. With a sigh, he put it back on the shelf. For him, the best aspect to the business has been the people. “We have very loyal, caring and wonderful people who come and shop with us,” he

said. “They develop relationships and ask us about our kids, the kind of people who genuinely care.” Article Consignment holds several events, usually with a fundraiser twist to it. From 10% of purchases towards a charity, to Girls Night Out, there is always something going on. “We love to entertain, just like at our home,” said Abraham. “It’s always great to feel the support of the community and see the immediate effect.”

position in early 2009 when the economy was bad. At the time, their daughter was one year old and Abraham admits she spent most of her first year in day care. “We worked a lot and traveled so much,” he said. “I couldn’t fathom putting my daughter back in day care and I doubted any general contractor would let a man bring his baby to work,” he said jokingly. Always wanting to own a retail business and wanting a career where he could spend more time with his children, he began doing some research. Learning that owning a new clothing store was going to be extremely expensive, the couple decided to go the consignment route. “My mother came up with the idea,” said Abraham. “She encouraged us to do it because someone from our hometown had opened a consignment shop and was very successful with it.” Just nine months after being laid off, Abraham found a store location in East Sacramento that fit the style of the boutique, and one month later, they were open for business. Coming up with a name for the business was its own effort. Abraham believed it was a good idea to have a name that began with the letter “A” so when people looked them up, they would always be at the top of their category. With this in mind, he pulled out a dictionary and began looking for “A” words. Article made the most sense, as in an article of clothing. Article Consignment accepts new and gently used current styles for men and women. “Unfortunately we can only accept brands that we can resale for a higher price point, such as high end brand names,” said Abraham. “If

L O L CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

REASONTO Party

BY KELSEY WEHSELS

C H A R I T Y S P O T L I G H T

As if people need a reason to party, charity is always a good excuse. As a way to make philan-thropy fun, Reason To Party, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization hosts parties and events to raise money for a variety of local causes and charities. No expensive dinners, no speeches, just great people, swanky parties and a purpose. To date, they have raised over $500,000 for lo-cal charities. The organization began in San Francisco shortly after 2008 when some friends noticed that local causes were suffering and the “old” model of charities relying on annual galas where auctions failed because no one would bid on lavish items at that time. Instead, Reason To Party came up with the idea to attract sev-eral people to chip in a little, and the best way to do that, was to throw a fun event.

Expansion of Reason To Party to Sacra-mento came organically through key commit-tee members in the San Francisco team that were from Sacramento and wanted to bring the model to their home city. One Sacramento native, Ryan Brough, joined the organization when he helped procure an event space for a party benefiting Sacramento Splash. “After our event at the Old Sugar Mill and the positive feedback from our patrons, I knew this was an organization that would be perfect for me to invest more time into,” he said. “In that same year, I joined the Board of Directors and have not looked back.” Reason To Party recently made it on the national stage when they hosted the Reason to Party: Never Too Young event in support of the colon cancer community’s

Never Too Young initiative at Times Square in New York City on March 3. Fresh off Lincoln Center Fashion Week, fashion designer Marc Valvo co-hosted the event, which took place on the Nasdaq floor. “We are very excited to see how our East Coast presence will grow and were humbled by the support in New York City,” said Brough. An upcoming and much anticipated Reason To Party event will be Bright Underbelly, where the largest mural in the region (70,000 square feet) will unfold under the W/X freeway. The festivities will include farmers market stands, samples from Broadway’s diverse restaurant row, and live music. Residents and natives can also become part of the mural by having their name inscribed in the community pillar for an additional donation. The one night event will highlight the rich past, present, and bright future for the Southside community and Sacramento. “We pride ourselves in bringing people together to make communi-ties better, and Bright Underbelly will do this,” said Brough. “The event will be a celebration of art in Sacramento and the community.”

TRENDING with DebiTIPS FOR PREPARING TO BUILDA NEW CUSTOM HOMEBY DEBI AMBROFF

Recently, I sold a home in the Rocklin area that had solar panels on the home. The solar was not owned or leased, but a solar alternative that was new to me. I called the company, SolarCity to learn what I could about their product and service, and then asked Todd Hall from SolarCity to share this interesting alternative with you.

SOLAR, SOLAR, SOLAR...Let’s talk about some of the ways solar has changed lately. The solar industry has gone through some interesting transformations lately that may change your mind as to whether it is right for you. Solar has been historically a large financial investment that requires the home owner to spend $20,000-$40,000 and wait 10-12 years to get a true return on their investment. That makes it a challenge for a green friendly homeowner to take the solar plunge. Solar was then introduced in the form of leasing the equipment. Homeowners could realize savings and go green, but the liens on the home for a 20 year lease created resale challenges. Recently, with a huge push from state and

Page 28: Lavish Living Magazine May 2015

federal mandates to convert more homes to alternate energy sources, solar has created a new way for you to go green. Power Purchase Agreements, also known as PPA’s have been introduced to overcome many of the barriers of going green. A PPA is a solar solution where you DO NOT BUY the equipment. The ownership of the equipment is maintained by the solar company. The solar company monitors, maintains and warranties the production of energy for the home. The company makes their money by selling you the green energy. Let me say again, YOU DON’T BUY THE EQUIPMENT! You are probably asking....so how does the solar company make money? There must be a catch? Regardless of who you currently get your electricity from, that company has invested huge amounts of capital to get your home hooked to the grid. The larger stronger solar companies are now doing the same. They are investing the $20,000-$40,000 in your home. The solar company will require you to buy your power from their company, but you would be buying it anyway, right? Again, how do they make money? The solar company sells you the energy NOT the equipment, and they can do it for less than you are now paying for electricity. A lot of small solar companies will try to discourage you from a PPA. Why? They just don’t have the financial backing to offer PPAs. The largest solar company SolarCity, has the financial backing of billions of dollars from investors, including Goldman-Saks, Bank of America and Google. A little research done by the consumer, will find that only a handful of companies can offer PPAs, but they represent the bulk of the volume currently being installed. If you have wanted to go solar, but thought the cost was just too much, or maybe you plan on moving in a few years or think you are at an age where it just does not make sense, you really should think again. With no out of pocket cost and instant savings, this trend is really catching on. If you need more information, contact Todd Hall, SolarCity, (916) 813-0052 or [email protected]

Designing DREAMS

BY KELSEY WEHSELS

L O L DESIGNING DREAMS

Designing dreams is what Randy Mintz and Raul Borodi do best. From flooring services such as hardwood and carpet to stone and granite counter tops, Designing Dreams specializes in creating surfaces that their clients love. “We focus on what we do best,” said Mintz. “It’s a lot of fun and we make a lot of new friends from our clients.” Mintz began at Designing Dreams when he applied for a bookkeeper position. Liking his people skills, the owners decided to make him a salesperson. From there, he learned the business inside and out, and where he eventually met Borodi. Borodi worked in San Francisco, working his way up from apprentice to superintendent. After obtaining his contractor’s license, he moved to Sacramento where he enjoys working with the people. “It can be difficult to find good people to work with,” he said. “When you find them, you appreciate them.” Which is why Mintz and Borodi decided to partner together. Borodi answered an ad to be an installer for Designing Dreams, and after working on a few projects together, the two realized they have a similar focus. The Folsom showroom opened in June 2014, and the layout of the showroom is unique as Mintz and Borodi wanted to generate more of a retail experience. “We wanted to create a storefront where people can come and browse, much like any other store,” said Mintz. Their showroom, conveniently located 100 yards from a Starbucks, Mintz added, contains over 600 different wood samples for customers to choose from. “It’s important to show all the options,” he said. While it is a lot of work, both men agree that the job is very gratifying. “I love getting that handshake at the very end, and sometimes a hug from clients because that shows they appreciated our work,” said Borodi. “It’s the most rewarding feeling.” The two also agree that the most difficult aspect to their business is timing and scheduling, which can

be difficult when relying on other companies to ship materials. Mintz recalled a time he woke up early in the morning and worrying about materials that were ordered. “It’s not a sleepless job, but you certainly worry because it can set you back a day or two” he said. “We like to keep in control what is in our control.” The next step for the business is the opening of their new showroom space in Granite Bay, which opened May 1.

Several experts agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There are even several pop culture references to it including the80's hit, The Breakfast Club, Breakfast at Tiffany's - both the one-hit-wonder by Deep Blue Something and the Aubrey Hepburn movie.

With Mother's Day arond the corner and being the biggest brunch day of the year, we are paying tribute tothis special daytime meal by highlighting 6 local restaurants who excel at crafting and

creating delicious, praise-worthy breakfasts and brunches.

BY KELSEY WESHELS | PHOTO DAN HOOD

Bacon and ButterWith a name like Bacon and Butter, the common misconception is that all their dishes are in fact made

with bacon and butter. However, that is not the case. The restaurant name came from the idea that if you do something well, it’s called your “bread and butter.” And let’s face it, Bacon and Butter does breakfast

well. Owner and Executive Chef, Billy Zoellin, was given an opportunity to open his own restaurant after running kitchens at several high end restaurants for 8 years. “I got the chance to do it, and it was exciting, so I took it,” he said. Sharing a space with a night club in midtown Sacramento, Zoellin thought the best way to share the space was to create a breakfast venue. “At night, it was a club and I didn’t want to compete with the night life, so I decided to do breakfast,” he said. Even after moving locations to Tahoe Park, Bacon and Butter has retained its breakfast appeal. Their most popular item is without a doubt their grilled cheese Benedict, according to Zoellin. It’s a grilled cheese with four cheeses, poached egg and hollandaise. The outside has caramelized bacon and cheese to give it interesting flavor and texture. “People go crazy over it,” Zoellin explained. The menu at Bacon and Butter is very unique as everything is as fresh and possible. In fact, the kitchen doesn’t even have a freezer or a microwave. “So if tomatoes aren’t in season,” he said. “Don’t expect to see them on the menu.”

Karen’sBakery and CafeFirst opened in Orangevale in 2000, Karen’s Bakery and Cafe was supposed to be a catering business. Owner, Karen Holmes, thought her storefront shop would see minimal traffic, but she soon learned that that was the opposite. “We were at our small 14-seat location for two and a half years and we were bursting at the seams,” she explained. Karen’s has made old Historic Folsom its new home, located at the corner of Gold Lake Drive and Leidesdorf Street. She admits that the favorite breakfast item is the sunny tart, a pastry shell filled with different melted cheese. The tart is then served with a fried egg on top. Holmes’ inspiration for this dish came from a food catalog, where she began experimenting to put her own twist on it. “It all kind of just came together,” she added. Although Karen’s is not open on Sundays, Mother’s Day is still very relevant at the bakery and cafe. “Leading up to it, we’re slammed,” said Holmes. “Kids come in looking for treats to give mom on the big day. Without a doubt, it’s one of the busiest time of the year.”

Awful Annie’sWhile the name Awful Annie’s might invoke some mixed feelings about a breakfast and lunch joint, the idea behind the name is that it is “awfully good!” The Baker family happened upon Awful Annie’s in 1991 when they were traveling through Auburn. “My parents asked the owner if she was interested in selling the restaurant and she replied, ‘as a matter of fact I do,’ and the rest is history,” said Bryan, one of owner’s sons. The menu was small when the family took over Awful Annie’s, but they have developed new specials and now the menu is quite extensive. Some of the favorites? The Eggs Benedict (Annie’s honey ham, two poached eggs on an English muffin, topped with hollandaise sauce), and the California Crab Cake Benedict (two poached eggs on crab cakes with tomato slices in grilled English muffins. Topped with hollandaise and avocado slices). On top of their delicious food menu, the two Baker sons, Adam and Bryan developed their own Bloody Mary seasoning close to 6-7 years ago. They began to manufacture and bottle it 5 years ago, and sell it at the two restaurants and a local grocery store. “Our Mary has become so popular that we sell 150 each Sunday,” said Bryan.

Aji Japanese BistroLocated in the heart of El Dorado Hills, Aji Japanese Bistro is a great place for a unique Sunday brunch experience. Managing partner, Nick Dedier and Executive Chef and partner, Russell Okubo aim to provide patrons with not only the best brunch environment, but a place for them to enjoy themselves, their company, and awesome food. “There is never that rush or anxiety to a Sunday brunch,” said Dedier. “The patio is popular and the bar fills up with people watching the golf match, Giants game or

March madness but all in all, our brunch really embodies the true spirit of ‘brunch’ taking

time to unplug, recharge and relax.” With a small menu of only 10 items, Dedier and Okubo

wanted to have a smaller, more compact menu that

Four Sister’s CafeIt can sometimes be difficult to get along with your siblings, but not these four sisters. Regina, Juliet, Lisa, and Patricia are all owners of the Four Sister’s Cafe in Rocklin. “We are the best of friends and have always had a unique and wonderful relationship,” they agree. “Of course, there are those days where we get on each other’s nerves and have mild disagreements, but 10 minutes later we are laughing and asking each other what to eat for lunch!” Recipes are hand-crafted by Regina (she goes by Gina), the self-taught, oldest sister with the kitchen skills. The other sisters all work the front of the house, managing, waiting tables, and of course, high fiving and having fun with the staff and guests. The sisters decided to specialize in breakfast food, because they are all self-proclaimed morning people. “We also worked in all types

of restaurants from small family breakfast diners to big corporate dinner houses,” said Elisa. “We loved the breakfast feel the most.” While it is difficult to pinpoint the most popular item, the women all agree that the mango stuffed French toast is definitely a favorite. “We take a freshly baked croissant dipped in a spiced custard and grilled. We then stuff the croissant with a mango marshmallow infused cream cheese topped with fresh sliced banana, mango, blackberries, and toasted coconut. Then drizzled with our homemade maple syrup,” Elisa explained. If you plan on heading over there for Mother’s Day, try the new special menu items. Mothers will also be given a $5 gift card to Four Sister’s Cafe and chocolate candy kisses.

Early Toast Mimosa HouseAs the name implies, Early Toast Mimosa House specializes in breakfast cuisine and mimosas.

It's doors first opened in Roseville in 2011 and soon, the El Dorado Hills location opened in 2012. The two locations seemed to fit right in with Lou Dedier’s, President and CEO, vision for his business. “Being that we are a family owned and operated business, we like to find area with a lot of family values,” he said. And it was the idea of family that inspired the breakfast menu. “Breakfast has always been one of my family’s favorite meals,” he explained. “Eating out was always difficult because each one of us wanted something different from the other. That’s when we decided to create a menu that has the variety to actually please a whole family.” The mimosas came about when the family began experimenting with different flavors and liking what they were creating, they continued to develop more drinks. “In fact, we hold a weekly meeting just about new drink ideas and implementation of those very ideas,” said Dedier. “Tasting is always the best part if I must say so myself!” The most popular mimosas are the Maui mango

(mango and pineapple juice), naughty cupid (lemon and strawberry), and beach bum (mango juice and watermelon). And the most desired dishes are the Folsom omelet (bacon, ham,

sausage, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and mixed cheeses topped with sour cream, tomatoes and chives), and the French toast “Maui style” - with banana, coconut, macadamia nuts and

caramel. For Dedier, the most important aspect for Early Toast is incorporating the community into their family and creating joyful experiences for their guests. “We don’t just want to see you

full, we want to see you happy,” he said.

A Double Shot of Culture and Friendliness BY DON AND ANN JACKSON

When we heard the news last year that Aer Lingus, the premier Irish airline, had once again started direct non-stop flights from San Francisco to Dublin, we jumped at the chance to return to our favorite European country. Anyone with even a little Irish heritage or longtime interest in this extraordinarily friendly country should take advantage of these new direct flights. This non-stop service is also

great news for anyone doing high-tech business in Ireland, one of Europe’s leading countries in the computer world.

For those readers who haven’t visited Ireland, we strongly recommend it be added to your vacation bucket list. And Aer Lingus always seems to be offering some incredible fares, bargain packages and numerous vacation options. Check out their web site and sign up for their often intriguing email offers and also click on their ‘Holiday Value Packages’ link to view all their current deals. Package possibilities usually include fly and self-drives, golf excursions, castle stays, all-inclusive tours and a wide variety of other options. www.aerlingus.com. A further reliable resource for travel to Ireland is the official web site of the country’s national tourism department, Tourism Ireland at www.ireland.com/en-us/. Tons of information can be found on this website and it provides some different

vacation packages offered than Aer Lingus. Between the two sites you should find enough options that will satisfy most any interest and budget. In addition both sites can be great resources for a plethora of coming events, attractions, sightseeing highlights and activities not mentioned in this article.

Our recommended places to go &see based on our previous 2 trips: First off, Dublin is a no-brainer for an extended visit! When arriving by air to the country’s largest city, our initial suggestion is to arrange a guided ‘hop-on-hop-off’ city tour that stops at all the major attractions. If it’s a clear day, be sure to get off at the Guinness Storehouse. And yes, the beer and tour are great, but the highlight was the tremendous vista of the entire Dublin area when you reach the top floor. If it’s not a clear day try to return when it’s not cloudy! Other don’t miss hop-offs: Trinity College to see the 1000 year old

Book of Kells, a 9th-century gospel manuscript, in the college’s magnificent library; Dublin Castle where the Throne Room & St. Patrick’s Hall were highlights; Temple Bar Area where more authentic Irish pubs can be found than anywhere on the planet; St. Stephen’s Green/Grafton Street area for incredible shopping and dining; and St. Patrick’s National Cathedral, built in the 1200’s, is Ireland’s most impressive medieval edifice.

Dublin Lodging:  On our most recent trip we unpacked our suitcases at the historic 191 year old Shelbourne Hotel on arrival and before flying home at the first rate Fitzwilliam. Both have a classic heritage and are brimming with Irish hospitality. For reservations, etc: www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/dubbr-the-shelbourne; www.fitzwilliamhoteldublin.com. For complete Dublin info: www.visitdublin.com.

Other Key Cities To Visit and Our Personal Highlight Experiences: If you are on your own after leaving Dublin, we suggest heading due west to Galway then south to Limerick and Cork and then slightly northeast to Waterford and back to Dublin. In Galway you shouldn’t miss a walking tour of downtown-the Republic’s 4th largest city-brimming with history and a vibrant night life scene. Our stay at the very chic and hip G

Hotel was a delightfully trendy choice. If time permits a short flight out to Inishmore Island, the largest of the prominent Aran Islands, to view incredibly steep rugged cliffs and Dun Aonghusa, one of Europe’s most important prehistoric sites, should be considered. If you spend time in Limerick, the Republic’s 3rd largest city and often referred to as Ireland’s sporting capital, be sure to check out the iconic King John’s Castle and stroll along the River Shannon. While visiting Cork, the country’s 2nd largest city with another very walkable downtown, be sure to visit Elizabeth Fort for wonderful city views below. While in the Cork area we stayed at the nearby Castlemartyr Resort located on land once owned by Sir Walter Raleigh. This beautifully restored manor house

was once the residence of the Third Earl of Cork and was previously owned by the Knights Templar of Da Vinci Code fame. Adjacent to the ruins of a thousand year old castle, it has now expanded to include 109 crème de la crème suites and rooms, a new state of the art spa and championship golf links. www.castlemartyrresort.ie. After we left Cork we had these memorable stops: Heritage Center in Cobh - the last port for the Titanic before it’s catastrophic sinking; St. Patrick’s Rock of Cashel--this 4th century cathedral ruins is one of Ireland’s most spectacular landmarks; Waterford Crystal Factory—one of the universe’s most famous crystal manufacturers and a shopper’s utopia; Powerscourt House and Gardens just thirty minutes south of Dublin- one of the finest examples of an aristocratic estate and gardens in all of Europe. While in Powerscourt we stayed at the luxurious Powerscourt Hotel, now managed by Marriott’s Signature Collection and the service was impeccable, the ambience striking and the setting was awe-inspiring. But what really got our attention was the fun-filled down-to-earth Irish pub surprisingly included within this very upscale resort. We understand certain staff members went around Ireland to pick out their favorite

local pub features and went about duplicating as much as possible. A stroke of leprechaun genius! www.powerscourthotel.com. There were countless other wonderful memories too numerous to mention and we’re looking forward to another visit to magical Erin very soon. And remember when Irish eyes are smiling they might be up to something.

With celebrity chef Quentin Bennett at the helm, it is no wonder the menu has become a favorite for many. Cooking at various locations around the world, Bennett has even worked at Universal and Paramount Studios and has an extensive celebrity clientele list. “Chef Q has a philosophy of doing traditional dishes, but adding a twist to it,” said Shane White, General Manager at ASR. “We offer fresh ingredients and healthy alternatives. It’s cool and new.” The restaurant even makes their own bread, bacon, pastrami, and fresh pasta. “Coming in at 8 in the morning and smelling that fresh bread and bacon cooking, I get hungry even though I already ate,” said White. The dinner menu at ASR offers a variety of dishes for several different palettes. From vegetarian lasagna and mushroom ravioli to chicken and waffles and petit filet mignon, the selections are sure to please anyone. And according to White, the most popular dishes at the restaurant are the Ahi nachos and the bourbon miso salmon. There are a few drink favorites as well. “Our mules are probably some of the favorites, those get requested a lot,” said White. He also admits the Strawberry Fields cocktail (Absolut citron, mint, simple syrup, muddled strawberries and sparkling lemon water), is a huge hit. At 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights, after the restaurant closes, ASR transforms itself into an upscale lounge. Options for VIP bottle service include luxurious appetizers and desserts, along with stunning views of the main dining room from the balcony, or a private cabana on the patio. “It’s high energy, and a cool place to be,” said White. “A lot of people that come out here are local, and it’s been fun to see those people keep coming back.”

Having opened in August 2014, the restaurant and lounge is already making a name for itself in Roseville. “The community has been so accepting of us,” said White. “It’s fun to operate a restaurant in this community that is involved, aware, and food-oriented.” This year, ASR will be hosting a special Mother’s Day brunch, serving some of their delicious brunch items in a buffet style. The buffet will include an omelet station, a carving station with roast beef

and ham, and of course the classics, eggs Benedict, bacon, sausage, and some lunch items as well. The event will be $38 for adults and $14 for kids 3-12. Brunch, a beverage, and coffee service are all included.

DINING OUTwith Nick

BRUNCHINGBY NICK DEDIER

Traditionally brunch was always just the food that was consumed between lunch and dinner; a causeway leading to dinner through an afternoon loaded with chores and errands. Yet when used as a verb, the word “brunch” takes on a whole new meaning. There are a growing number of us who understand that brunch is a state of mind; an actual activity and a unit of time measurement rather than just a description for benedicts and bloodies that are consumed after the noon hour. Brunch can take on many forms: a leisurely fruit tray consumed on the beach, warm croissants delivered via room service and consumed in bed while reading the paper, mimosas and sushi on the patio, a sun drenched chopped salad with a glass of rose. Examples are varied and endless but there is one observable consistent thread when brunch is done right: Time and Pace. As a hospitality industry lifer, I would like to begin seeing everyone take time for brunch. Follow the simple step by step below and take back your weekend afternoons and recharge for your coming week.

• Stop thinking of brunch as “food.” You can eat “breakfast” anytime but brunch is more than just eggs, toast, loco moco, sushi or a chopped salad. Brunch is a time period involving but not limited to a minimum of an hour and a half• The hour and a half must be leisurely. Put down your cell phone, lean back in your chair and just exhale. As my favorite yoga instructor Vanessa Shim would say: “take it in through your nose, exhale and just let it go.” • Order a cocktail and stop. Just pause. Order it, let it come, sip and savor, relax and chill out before ordering your first course… yes your first course, of many. • Ordering in courses is a great way to elongate the time you’ve allowed for relaxation and indulgence. Get out of the habit of sitting down and immediately ordering coffee, eggs, toast, pastries, water and a waffle all at once. There is nothing at all relaxing about trying to eat everything before it gets cold or soggy. Take time. Pace yourself and order a little bit at a time. There is no rush… you’re brunching.• Take advantage of a bottomless mimosa. If the house offers a bottomless mimosa and they use good sparkling wine, then have at it, but respect it. Remember that it is by definition bottomless and drinking at brunch is never a race. • Brunch should always involve exceptional service. If you’re going to extend your breakfast or lunch into an experience, then you should be in a spot where you feel looked after, attended to and pampered. Spend your money where you like to spend your time. At the end of the day value extends far beyond just food. Ultimately “brunching” is an exercise in slowing down, unplugging and unwinding. Make this time a priority on your day off. Don’t just try to squeeze it in before errands; make time for it, relax, enjoy and reward yourself for a great week. If you can master the art of brunching you will find that you will start enjoying your time out, any time or day of the week, more often.

TERRE ROUGE & Easton Wines

BY EMILY GUERRERO

Terre Rouge and Easton Wines is a family run winery located centrally in the Shenandoah Valley. First established in 1986, winemaker Bill Easton and his wife Jane O’Riordan are no novices in the winemaking business. Their longstanding experience in both the wine merchant and culinary industries bring a unique perspective to their fermentation and distribution process. It’s no wonder they are a Sierra Nevada favorite with over 25 years of experience that combines the elegance of finely crafted wine and great food. When they first started in the mid 80’s, they set out to grow Rhone

Varietals which have made Northern California famous for its wine grapes. Bill Easton, a member of the Rhone Rangers, a group of El Dorado winemakers who specialize in Rhone winemaking, has a real focus on the quality and functionality of his wine above all else. But Rhones are not the extent of their winemaking portfolio. Beyond the typical Rhone wines which carry the Terre Rouge label, the Easton Label side of the winery creates equally fantastic wines out of other California native grapes besides the Rhone. The husband and wife duo and their dedication to creating balanced wines

that celebrate great grapes sets them apart from other vineyards which focus on only one type. The motto quality before quantity rings true in that they carry only 25,000 cases of top notch wine. However, between the Easton and Terre Rouge Labels there are over 30 vineyard designated wines. The wine selection at Terre Rouge and Easton is extensive and accessible. Meaning, every wine is made with the intention of being paired with a great meal. They go with a very European style of winemaking to create elegant, balanced taste and Jane includes lots of original recipes that work perfectly with their wines. What they are best known for is a killer Syrah, and currently, they make 8. The Terre Rouge label is also known for very refined old vine zinfandel. When asked what their favorites might be, both Jane and Bill say, “they are all favorites but it depends on individual likes.” Jane’s current favorite is their Vintage 2009, Terre Rouge Grenache called L’autre. which she can only describe as “absolutely beautiful.” Bill, the winemaker’s, favorite is a 2009 Terre Rouge Syrah made with DTR Ranch organically farmed grapes. Finally, their ambiance and events create the perfect atmosphere to unwind. The tasting room has a fantastic patio and a pétanque court. The owners say, “each tasting is centered around education in a really fun way. Whether you are just getting to know wines or already know a lot, it’s all about fun education.” So on your next wine tasting excursion, remember Terre Rouge and Easton. With frequent events you can enjoy wine all the time. On July 18-19, join them for an event called Get Horizontal where you can taste all their wines from the 2009 vintage. For more events or details about the winery, visit their website.

Oakridge Winery

BY EMILY GUERRERO

As the oldest operating winery in Lodi, Oak Ridge has over 80 years of experience creating fantastic wines in Northern California. Currently, it is owned by three families and produces wine under a wide variety of labels. In its early days, the winery was a winemaking co-op that combined the skills and grapes of all sorts of winemakers and vineyards for amazing tastes and wines. In 2002, when it was purchased by the families who currently own and operate it, the entire facility was modernized to make way for state of

the art winemaking processes. The winery receives its grapes from over 500 acres of vines, some of which are nearly 100 years old creating a depth of flavor that’s hard to find anywhere else other than the Oak Ridge label. Today the winery has a wide range of brands that it works with including well known ones such as Old Soul, Three Girls, Moss Roxx and Lodi Estates. With such an extensive reach in the Lodi wine market, you probably already have an Oak Ridge favorite even if you don’t know it.

L CAL LODI WINESTHIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL LODI WINERIES.

The Oak Ridge specialty is by far Zins. In fact, they are currently the largest grower of Zinfandel grapes in the United States. Many of the wines made from their Zin varietals have gone on to win major awards for both unique flavor and affordability. A customer favorite is the Moss Roxx “Ancient Vine Zinfandel” which uses grapes from 125 year old vines. Their OZV “Old Vine Zinfandel” is also the number one selling Zinfandel priced between $10.00 and $14.00. Among their extensive selection of other wines, the 2011 Merlot won Silver in the California State Fair Wine Competition in 2014 which is just one of the hundreds of awards. They also carry award-winning Chardonnay, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, and so much more we could list wines for weeks. In the end, what makes their wines so delicious are the family grape growers and farmers in Lodi that have their work down to an art form.

These wines have been recognized and sold internationally and locally with thousands of dedicated fans. The tasting room at Oak Ridge is open 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. They are currently in the works of expanding the winery to have over 3 million gallons of holding capacity which represents just how large of a selection you can expect to find at their tasting room. The tasting room itself is one of the most beautiful in all of Lodi. Its vintage, upscale feel with mood lighting and comfortable seating sets it up to be the perfect location for weekend getaways, day trips, or dates with that special someone. Whether you’re a dedicated wino or you simply enjoy a glass occasionally, Oak Ridge could not be a more perfect place for you. Keep up to date with their frequent events on the website and be sure to stop by this spring for a glass of fantastic wine.

TOWER Gardens

BY EMILY GUERRERO

Turn your backyard, apartment balcony or classroom into a beautiful space with a Tower Garden. They are an at home farm-to-fork solution to growing plants without the mess and hassle of soil. These tower gardens, a product of Juice Plus and sold locally by Rich Downing and Karalee Morris, use patented aeroponic technology that replaces dirt with water and air for year round gardening. The towers are only 2 feet wide and make use of vertical space to allow anyone with or without a green thumb to garden even in apartments or small backyards. Similarly, Tower Gardens have provided an amazing solution in the classroom. While most children are unable to harvest the things they plant in class because of summer vacation, Tower Gardens allow teachers to grow amazing fruits and vegetables with their students year round. What about at home? Rich Downing and his wife currently use their Tower Garden to grow 20 different varieties of tomatoes among other vegetables like lettuce. They grow year round and never have to worry about weather because you can easily move your tower garden inside. On top of the growing benefits, the gardens cultivate a relaxing environment with beautiful growth and soothing waterfall sounds. You can find out more about Tower Gardens at www.richdowning.com and or karaleemorris.juiceplus.com.

As one of the most refreshing spring vegetables, it’s time for you to get excited about cucumbers! As a member of the gourd family, cucumbers come in three varieties: slicing for salads and cooking, pickling for a tangy treat, and burpless a more exotic, sweet variety. They are well known in the health and fitness community for being a “negative calorie” snack meaning, it actually takes more calories to digest and eat them than is contained in a single serving. These green delights are an amazing vegetable, usually served raw that offer dozens of health benefits and a fantastic crunch for just about any meal. Whether you’re looking for a great detox agent or a fresh addition to lunch, cucumbers are a

powerful agent in promoting healthy body weight and hydration. They contain a lot of liquid and minerals like magnesium and potassium which is exactly why slicing them and placing them in your water with some lemon does the trick for bloat. And as summer begins to roll into the Sacramento area, cucumbers could be exactly what you need to stay cool. Their light flavor and hydration promote both internal and external cooling leading to better circulation. That’s why they work magic on under eye bags and your skin. So lay back with a slice of cucumber on your tired eyes and welcome summer in all it’s warm goodness.

THE BEST & WORST Mothers Day Presents

BY EMILY GUERRERO

When it comes to Mother’s Day, there a few universal do’s and don’ts for your mom. Women get a bad rap for being “hard to shop for” but the secret is finding a gift that says “I thought about you” instead of “I remembered the date this morning in the grocery aisle.” Here are a few best and worst presents for your number one fan this May!

The BEST:THE GIFT OF R&RWhether you are 15 for 45, the reality is that you stress your mom out and chances are, she does the same to you. For Mother’s Day, give your mother a gift that gives back. Anything relating to rest and relaxation may be just the gift you need to say thank you and ease her up. Think massages, facials, nails, and weekend getaways to give your mom just the dose of pampering she deserves for putting up with you. If you’re on a tight budget visit luxury bath stores like Lush for an at-home spa experience.

THE GIFT OF CHORES Now, this doesn’t mean you need to give your mother a coupon book good for one rotation of laundry and a day of mopping. That’s pretty much worthless because it will end up in the back of the junk drawer forgotten. Instead, think bigger. A creative gift for mom is a month of housekeeping, yardwork, or dog walking from a professional. Making her life a little bit easier is just the kind of thing mothers love. To make sure she doesn’t take it as a dig at her ability to keep her house neat, make sure the card clearly indicates you’re giving her a break, not a hint.

THE GIFT OF RETAIL THERAPYMost mothers we know trade in their morning beauty ritual for school lunches and last night’s dishes. Beyond that the purse and makeup fund is traded in for diapers and diplomas. Show your mom you cherish her sacrifices with gift cards to her favorite retail shops. A day of Nordstrom and Sephora just might say “I love you” better than handmade cards and Russell Stover. Whether you’re buying travel size perfume or showering her in gift cards, a little bit of fabulous goes a long way.

The WORST:CHEAPY CHEAPSKATESYour mom knows when there’s something cheap sitting in front of her. Things like drug store candy and dollar store bubble bath are a major no no. It’s not that you need to spend your life savings on a holiday, but instead putting thought into a gift reflects the thoughts you have towards her. If you’re strapped for cash, opt for a bouquet of flowers and making a homemade meal. Cheap gifts are a mother’s day faux pas you don’t want to be remembered for in her weekly book club.

BREAKFAST IN BED WAY TOO EARLYIn most homes, Mother’s Day is the day your mom gets to sleep in, no matter what. Breakfast in bed is listed as one of the worst Mother’s Day presents on numerous mommy blogs and we find it rings true. If you’re confident breakfast is the way to go, aim for a late brunch and make sure there’s a pot of coffee ready to go the second she’s up. Between the bed crumbs, spillable foods, and morning breath, breakfast in bed is most likely not the sweet gesture you had in mind.
