Mary Cohen presents The History of W ine Mak-ing in California. Join us for a talk on the history be-hind California's success as a world class wine mak-ing region. From its earliest beginnings over 300 years ago to the difficulties of Prohibition to the best-ing of some of France's wines in the 1976 Judgment of Paris to today's infinite number of wineries across the Golden State, California's history of wine is im-pressive. Automobile Driving Museum (with private docent tour $10 Donation )

We will be taking a trip to the Automobile Driving Museum, one of Southern California’s premier desti-nations for car enthusiasts! Letters Of American History Joe Mardesich

Friday, July 7, 10:30AM [Valmonte]

Joe Mardesich, a former history and political science teacher, will give a talk and slide show on the current political climate and what we can learn from history, as well as how to come to terms with what is going on today. Joe Mardesich was the first college graduate in his family. He attended Pep-perdine and CSU Long Beach, and majored in his-tory.

[Hesse Park] Jill Amadio, Chasing Stories Around the Globe. As an inspirational speaker she brings her life experiences alive with visuals and weaves her adventures into her mystery series, "Digging Too Deep: A Tosca Trevant Mystery," and "Digging Up the Dead," that opens with an actual re-burial she attended five years ago for Ray-mond Chandler and his wife, Cissy. She is an experi-enced interviewer and counts among the articles she wrote an interview with the Queen of Thailand. Please sign up!

USS Iowa Presentation

Wednesday, July 12, 10:45AM [Valmonte]

Rich Abele is a former Contracts and Export Compliance professional who supported various mil-itary aircraft production programs including the B-1B Lancer bomber and the C-17 airlifter at Rockwell International Corporation and most recently the Boeing Company in Long Beach, CA. Rich also served in the US Navy which included two tours of duty in the Vietnam. He retired in 1995 following 32 years of service in the Naval Reserve with the rank of Captain. An avid outdoor adventurer and former marathoner, Rich has traveled to and run on all seven continents and continues to trek, explore and moun-tain climb on many remote and distant lands. When not traveling, Rich serves as a tour guide, training instructor and fund raiser aboard the museum battle-ship USS IOWA (BB-61) in San Pedro.

USS Iowa + Box Lunch

Thursday, July 13, 9:15 AM Entering service more than 70 years ago, USS Io-wa was immediately deployed to the South Pacific in the uncertain early years of World War II. The iconic battleship served with distinction in the war, and later during the Korean War. In the early 1990’s, USS Iowa concluded her active duty as the Berlin Wall crumbled. Battleship Iowa now serves as an historic naval ship museum. Forged in war, guardian of the peace, the proud ship keeps watch as the stately sentinel of the LA Waterfront. [Clinic] A local dermatologist, graduated from the Univer-sity of Pennsylvania with Honors. She received her medical degree from Georgetown University and internship at Columbia University Hospital in NYC. She completed her Dermatology residency at Howard University Hospital and the Veteran’s Medical Center in Washington DC. She is an active member of many medical societies and we’ll be in-troduced at a future Coffee Connection. She will be here on the 2nd and 4th Fridays each month. A schedule will be available in the sign-up book.

American Songbook Series

Saturday, July 15, 10:30 AM [Valmonte]

Please join Seth Becker for this hour program that includes a mix of music appreciation and history, while exploring the unique bond that binds us to the greatness in music. Seth Becker is a musicolo-gist who focuses on the American Songbook and Broadway history. The series covers wide-ranging topics from composers, productions and Broad-way seasons to the histories of individual songs. Different topics are chosen each month. We will both listen to and discuss the music chosen this month, as well as review the current Broadway shows playing today. Please come up and join us!

Peninsula Senior Lectures Wednesday, July 19, 10:00 AM

[Hesse Park] Dr. Lew Holzman returns for a presentation on the United States’ National Parks. There are 59 Na-tional Parks and Dr. Holzman has visited and pho-tographed 54 of them. Exercise Classes in the Exercise Studio: 1. Fitness Training with David Carroll, Monday, Wednesday & Friday at 9:15 AM & 10:00 AM: Each class begins with a quick topic of educational information related to health and fitness followed by a comprehen-sive warm-up and workout sequence, focused on full body strengthening and balance. 2. Balance Classes: Tuesday and Thursdays at 9:00 AM: Our PT, Dave Hone, will lead Level 1 Balance. Dave will assess your current balance level with simple standardized tests the first time and then retest at the end so you can see your improvement over the course. Classes kept small for 1-on-1 attention and safety. 3. Fullerton Fitness with Cathy Fullerton, Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Valmonte Living Room: Cathy leads a chair exercise class that relies on calisthenics, strengthening, stretching and light weights. Chair Yoga Classes: 1. Chair Yoga, Tuesdays at 1:30 PM: Chair -based yoga with Leslie Eichel is a one hour workout that is fun and re-laxing. Deep–breathing, stretching and meditation techniques help build flexibility, strength and confidence. 2. Chair “Body & Brain” Yoga with Marsha Takamiya: Tuesday & Thursday at 10:00 AM: Her fascination with the brain led her to train in Brain Education Yoga, which incorporates yoga, meditation, breathing and fun brain games to promote health, happiness and peace. With over 10 years of learning and experience, she has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and skills. She opened a studio 7 years ago in Westchester and now, Marsha shares this with you! 3. Chair “Body & Brain” Yoga, 1st and 3rd Saturday at 10:30 AM: Marsha Takamiya leads chair yoga, empha-sizing breathing techniques, stretching, strengthening and relaxation.
