Laurie Fendrich, Professor of Fine Arts, Hofstra University. I am a painter who lives and works in New York. I have written several essays on the role of art and artists in society. Two or three times a week, I blog on a variety of topics for “Brainstorm,” The Chronicle Review’s blog: http://chronicle.com/blogs/brainstorm/author/lfendrich In 2010, my 20-year retrospective opened at the Williamson Art Gallery in Claremont, CA, and then traveled to the Montana Museum of Art in 2011. The exhibition was accompanied by a 96-page catalog with a catalog essay by Mark Stevens. I earned a B.A. in political science at Mount Holyoke College, and an M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I have had several solo exhibitions in New York and elsewhere. Reviews of my work have appeared in such publications as ArtForum, Art in America, ArtNews, The New York Times, The New York Observer and Partisan Review. In 2009, I was awarded a Brown Foundation Fellowship, which enabled me to live and work at the Dora Maar House in Ménerbes, France.
