The four cities served by theLaurentian Chamber have a sharedpast that revolves around a greatnatural discovery – iron ore.Eveleth, Gilbert, Mountain Iron and

Virginia are among a group of townsstretching across the low rolling hills of theMesabi Iron Range, one of the world’s best-known sources of iron ore. United by theirmining origins, each city also has a distinctand fascinating history of its own to tell.

EvelethThe beginnings of Eveleth began with thediscovery of ore deposits and the formationof the Adams Mining Company. On April22, 1893 the first map of the village ofEveleth was filed with the Register ofDeeds, which reported a population of 200residents. (The name of Eveleth was adopt-ed in honor of Erwin Eveleth, a timbercruiser who owned land upon which thecity is now located.) In 1902 the city wasincorporated, and City Hall was constructedin 1906. Today, Eveleth’s population isapproximately 4,000, and mining continuesto be a main source of business.Additionally, Eveleth has five sites on theNational Register of Historic Sites and hasprovided six members of U.S. Olympichockey teams.

GilbertOriginally named Sparta and situated near amining location that began in 1892, relo-cated to make way for iron ore mining.Simply taking the name of the nearestgroup of mines – Gilbert – the town movednear the city of Virginia and was incorpo-rated into a village in 1908. The road thatis now Broadway (State Highway 37) wasoriginally built from pine trees growing in

Gilbert, and was at once part of a twenty-eight-mile boardwalk connecting the east-ern Mesabi Range towns. Additionally,Gilbert was the eastern boundary of theMesabi Electric Railway, an interurbanstreetcar line that ran from Gilbert to thetown of Hibbing. Recently, the city ofGilbert reclaimed the historical landmarkLake Ore-be-gone, which was the result ofnatural flooding from three local iron oremines. With an approximate population of1,900, Gilbert continues to develop andgrow, and in 2008 will be proudly celebrat-ing its 100th year.

Mountain IronNamed for the Mountain Iron Mine, it washere in 1890 that Leonidas Merritt discov-ered iron ore. This is considered to be theorigin of iron ore mining on the MesabiIron Range. In August, Mountain Iron cele-brates this event with the annual “Leonidas

Merritt Days Festival,” and a two-and-a-halfton, 10-foot high statue of Merritt stands inthe heart of the city. A source of pride,Mountain Iron is known as “The TaconiteCapital of the World.” Taconite, an iron-bearing rock, became viewed as a newresource once the supply of natural orebegan to decrease. A process was developedto create Taconite pellets, and Minnesota’siron ore mining industry was saved.Because of that, mining continues to beMountain Iron’s central industry. CurrentlyMinnesota’s third-largest city in geographicalsize, Mountain Iron, with a population of3,500, carries forward with its proudmining tradition.

VirginiaThe history of Virginia, “Queen City of theNorth,” began with mining explorations.Settlers first came to the area in 1890 andin 1895, it was incorporated as the first cityon the Iron Range. Both iron ore miningand lumber milling were lucrative businessesfor Virginia, and at one time the city washome to both the largest white pine mill inthe world and the biggest ore-producingmine. Surviving two fires (one in 1893and one in 1900), Virginia perseveredand currently has fifteen buildings on theNational Register of Historic Places.Virginia’s population has varied throughoutthe years. In 1895, approximately 1,000people lived in the city. The population hadreached 5,000 before the fire of 1900, anddecreased to 2,900 shortly afterward. Nowwith an estimated population of 9,100,Virginia, proudly located at the heart of theIron Range and centered around theTaconite industry, continues to flourish.

With outstanding recreational facilities and vastexpanses of natural beauty, the areas served by theLaurentian Chamber of Commerce are a must-see atany time of year. Gorgeous lakes and skies, millionsof acres of forests, easy access to wildlife and nature,

a fascinating history and helpful hosts are part of what make thisarea of northeastern Minnesota so great.

Two of the region’s state parks offer differentperspectives of iron mining on the IronRange. A visit to the Soudan UndergroundMine State Park takes visitors on a half-miletrip into the earth via elevator and train toexperience first-hand how it felt to be aminer who worked daily in an undergroundmine. Most iron mines in the area eventuallyconverted their underground mines to stripmining operations, and the Hill Annex MineState Park offers an excellent example of this“open pit” mining experience. The result ofnatural flooding from three local mines,Lake Ore-be-Gone in Gilbert is a havenfor water-skiers, swimmers, fishers and scubadivers. With boat landings, docks, and picnic areas, there is much to enjoy.

The Iron Range is one of the most scenic hiking destinations inthe Midwest. There are over 175 miles of hiking trails anduntouched wilderness. Whether an avid hiker or a casual walker, there are trails to fulfill everyone’s adventures. Among things tosee while traversing the trail are soaring eagles, river gorges, andthree-hundred-year-old white pine trees. The area is home to 155nesting birds and 40 species of wildlife, and it is not uncommonto sight a moose! Popular casual recreation trails include Bear

Head Lake State Park, Big Aspen Recreation Area, McCarthyBeach State Park, Laurentian Divide, Lookout Mountain, GiantsRidge, and Carey Lake. The Mesabi Trail offers a variety of out-door experiences from walking, hiking, biking, skating, skiing,snow-shoeing and in some areas snowmobiling. Traversing through25 communities and currently spanning 70 miles, Eveleth, Gilbert,Mountain Iron, and Virginia all have direct and easy entry points. The trail also offers access to swimming, canoeing, camping andfishing.

For winter activities, curling, skiing, snowboarding, and snow-shoeing are readily available. The Midwest’s best-rated skidestination, Giants Ridge Golf and Ski Resort, is located here. With 34 alpine runs and exceptional facilities, it has everythingone would need for winter fun. Another popular sport inMinnesota is snowmobiling, and the Iron Range offers more than2,000 miles of excellent snowmobile trails. With an average snow-fall of over 100 inches and an extensive amount of tree cover onthe trails, the Iron Range’s paths open earlier in the season andstay open longer than most areas in Minnesota. Beyond a doubt, it

is a snowmobiler’s dream come true!

Some of the Midwest’s best golfing is also located here. GolfDigest ranked The Quarry at Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort“The Number One Public Golf Course in Minnesota” andThe Legend was ranked number four in Minnesota.Golfweek also ranked The Quarry number one in Minnesota.Giants Ridge was also named “One of the Top Six GolfDestinations in the World” by Golf World magazine. Thereare many courses to choose from in the area includingEveleth Municipal Golf Course, Hoyt Lakes Golf Course,Mesaba Country Club, The Legend at Giants Ridge, TheQuarry at Giants Ridge, Virginia Golf Course, WolfridgeGolf Course and The Wilderness at Fortune Bay.

Fishing is another popular sport in the area. There areoutstanding opportunities for both shore and boat fishing.Plentiful are walleye, bass, crappie, muskie, northern pike, andrainbow, brook and lake trout. Fishing guides are available atselected lakes and resorts.

In addition to the all of the above, movie theaters, bowling alleys,a casino and much more are located in or near the LaurentianChamber area.

& INDUSTRY

Because of vast natural reserves, much industry in the quadcities revolves around mining, forest products, and newlydiscovered resources. For over 100 years, iron ore mininghas provided thousands of well-paying jobs for people in thearea. The mining industry continues to hold strong because

of the discovery of Taconite (an iron-bearingrock). Found in large deposits in recent years, other minerals such as copper, nickel andprecious metals are also being looked at forpotential commercialization. The timberindustry contributes to the regional economy aswell. New innovations, such as the harnessingof wind energy and a clean coal gasificationtechnology will create a positive economic andenvironmental impact for residents of north-eastern Minnesota and the entire state.

Northeastern Minnesota is rapidly becomingone of the most technologically-equipped rural areas in the nation.Technology centers, high-tech industrial parks, training programsand an extensive telecommunications infrastructure are among thelist of efforts to equip the region for this new economy. Companiessuch as Northwest Airlines and Carlson Wagonlit Travel/SATOTravel have discovered that the region’s quality of life, dedicatedworkforce and business development incentives combine to form anideal operating environment. Technology centers, offering hi-speedInternet connections, computer labs, and business support servicesare beginning to emerge in the area as well. Existing technologycenters include the Itasca Technology Exchange and Ely AreaTechnology Center, and over 10 more technology centers areplanned for the future.

There are tax-free business opportunities in Minnesota. Under thenew Minnesota Job Opportunity Building Zones (JOBZ) program,34 communities and 58 sub-zones on 3,271 acres across northeast-ern Minnesota have been given this special designation. A widevariety of industrial sites and existing buildings in this area offergrowing and expanding businesses the opportunity to substantiallybenefit from tax exemptions until the end of 2015.

Northeastern Minnesota is well-known for its highly skilled, educated and productive employees. Turnover rate is low, and theregion has become a draw for companies looking for outstandingemployees. Labor statistics in northeastern Minnesota show aneducated workforce. 91 percent of Minnesotans have a high schooleducation or above, 17 percent have earned bachelor degrees and50 percent are professionally certified or licensed (source: Bureauof Business & Economic Research UMD School of Business andEconomics). According to a new

report from the Pew

Research Internet &

American Life

Project Survey, a

third of Internet users have accessed

information wirelessly at home, at

work, or while “out and about.”

Wireless devices with which people

have logged onto the Internet include

laptop computers, PDAs, web-enabled

cell phones and smartphones (i.e.,

BlackBerrys, Treos).

The Pew survey results indicated that

a quarter of all Internet users have a

cell phone that connects to the inter-

net wirelessly; one in eight use PDAs

to make that wireless connection. Some

40 percent of Internet users under age

30 who connect to the Internet via

laptop computer do so wirelessly;

another 40 percent use their web-

enabled cell phones; and 17 percent

use wireless PDAs.

The “New Convergence” 2007

At the 2007 Las Vegas Consumer

Electronics Show, Gary Shapiro,

president and CEO of the Consumer

Electronics Association (CEA), spoke

about the “new convergence” taking

place, forecasting that the consumer

electronics industry will soar to $155

billion in 2007.

“Everything is becoming digital and

everything with a digital heartbeat will

get connected,” said Ed Zander, presi-

dent and CEO of Motorola. “It truly is

the Internet in your pocket.”

Converged communcations, mobile

media, wireless, WiFi, WAP — the

runaway train hurdling through the

digital frontier shows no signs of

slowing down; marketers are jumping

on board at every stop.

The World is Going Mobile

The 24/7, worldwide connectivity

available through these new technolo-

gies reiterates what we already know:

we’re going mobile in almost every

aspect of their lives. Consumers are

spending less time with traditional

media; businesses are seeking ways to

reach those consumers through new

media.

For example, Gen Y young adults,

(ages 18-26) spend 25 percent less time

watching TV than Gen X, and 50

percent less time than Baby Boomers.

It’s predicted that well over $500

billion LESS will be spent on network

television advertising this year.

ABI Research found that by 2011,

some 250 million users will be making

and receiving phone calls over con-

verged fixed-mobile networks and

access points — around 10 percent

of households and 8 percent of

enterprises. In 2006, North America

achieved 93.2 percent wireless

subscriber penetration.

An Internet Week survey found that

traffic, gas prices and irritation with

waiting in line are driving consumers

to spend more time shopping online

than ever before.

Another report indicates that 87

percent of consumers research

products online prior to making a

purchase. Consistently growing

numbers of older adult consumers

are regularly buying products online.

One in 10 consumers internationally

now buys products and services

through their cell phones. The onset

of greater imaging capabilities

through cell phones and other wireless

handhelds will also boost sales.

Nokia’s new Ad Service will help

advertisers target messages through

mobile services and applications.

A Nokia spokesman noted that, “as

advertisers struggle to reach personalized

targeting with traditional media such

as print and TV, mobile advertising is

becoming an increasingly attractive

channel for brands.”

Technology is so advanced that, as the

CEO of Acuity Mobile points out, ads

The availability of such tools

invested in traditional media as these

new communications platforms and

technologies emerge.

Reaching Target Markets

Identifying and researching target

audiences is, and has been since the

inception of commerce and trade,

the bottom-line goal of successful

marketing. Convergence technology

allows marketers to deliver their sales

messages to tightly targeted niche

markets and core consumer clusters

across multiple media platforms,

much more cost effectively than

traditional media ever could.

Even before the product rollout and

ad campaign begin, research in the

form of surveys, product evaluation,

even focus groups — all can be

conducted in a short period of time

with immediate, measurable results

through converged communication.

Traditional media may languish to

are pouring billions of dollars into

a world of converging and converged
