John Rubel Agriculture ScholarshipAbby Bean, a 2020 Sioux Central graduate, has been selected as the 2020 recipient of the John Rubel Agriculture Scholarship! Abby is pictured receiving the $1,500 John Rubel Agriculture Scholarship check from John Pohlman and Ben Meyer, both members of Grace Lodge 519 in Laurens. This scholarship is administered by the lodge but provided by Amy Rubel, wife of the late John Rubel. John was a Christian, father, veteran, farmer, Freemason, neighbor and friend. The scholarship is to provide financial assistance to the recipient in pursuit of a post-secondary education in any area of agriculture: especially to the next generation of Iowa farmer. Abby will attend ISU this fall studying agriculture communications and feed technology. Congratulations, Abby!

Have you been following our Summer Reading antics on Facebook? It sure is different this year. We are living proof that you CAN teach old dogs new tricks! Every week we post a video featuring a fairy tale, since our theme is “Imagine Your Story.” Jeri, our children’s librarian, has been our narrator and Deb and I have had fun portraying the characters with puppets. We even got new velvet curtains with gold stars to spiff up our puppet theater. So far the fairy tales we’ve featured are: Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Bean Stalk, and the Little Red Hen. Since we can’t host a group yet, coordinating Grab-n-Go activity and craft packs are available for the kids to pick up at the library or when they pick up their lunch at school. New novels this week include: The Guest List by Lucy Foley, Don’t Turn Around by Jessica Barry, The Clutter Corpse by Simon Brett, Nothing Can Hurt You by Nicole Goldberg, The Girl from Widow Hills by Megan Miranda, Home Before Dark by Riley Sager and The Mountains Wild by Sarah Stewart Taylor. In nonfiction books we received The Rural Diaries: Love, Livestock, and Big Life
Lessons Down on Mischief Farm by Hilarie Morgan. This book is dedicated to the memory of Jim Runneberg by his mother, Dorothy Runneberg. It’s time to sign up for our July 7th Take it Tuesday class! This month, the class will paint pinecone flowers and mount them on a small board. Stop in to check out Deb’s sample, it’s really cute! Because of the Covid-19 regulations and the extra precautions necessary, class size will be limited to 8, and you must preregister and wear a mask. We are open our regular hours, but I totally get it if you don’t feel comfortable coming in the library yet. Let us know if you need materials delivered, or to arrange an outdoor pickup.
