Two Rivers Pistol League Starts January 13The Pocahontas Rifle and Pistol Club will continue the long-standing tradition of competing in the annual Two Rivers Pistol League. Teams will fire the first match of the season the week of January 13. The Pocahontas club will again have two teams, and will compete with 11 other teams from Humboldt, Fort Dodge, Royal and Storm Lake. All matches are shot at indoor ranges. The league lasts 10 weeks. The Pocahontas teams have five “home” and five “away” matches on the calendar. Matches will be fired Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday evening of each week. The league is open to all shooters, regardless of experience. Scores are tabulated for individuals, as well as a team score. Technically any .22 pistol is suitable for use, but most competitors will use “match” type guns. More experienced shooters will also compete with “center fire” (.32 caliber and larger) and “.45” guns. Iron sights, red dot or scope sights are acceptable. The Two Rivers League is one of the oldest “shoulder to shoulder” competitions in the country, dating back to the 1950s. The goal of the league is to promote competitive marksmanship in a safe and enjoyable environment. Shooters will compete with other shooters within their NRA classification. Unclassified shooters will receive their NRA classification card at the completion of the season. Awards for competitors will be presented at the annual banquet after the season ends.

Anyone interested in participating or with questions about the league should contact Pat Storr 712-335-4393 or [email protected].

Happy New Year! We are looking forward to another year working with the great patrons of the Laurens Public Library! We received a few new novels this week, including: River Murders by James Patterson, Hindsight by Iris Johansen, Lady Clementine by Marie Benedict, Vanishing by Jayne Ann Krentz, Topeka School by Ben Lerner, All That’s Bright and Gone by Eliza Nellums, Forever Hidden by Traci Peterson, Such a Fun Age by Riley Reid, Mr. Nobody by Catherine Steadman, Moral Compass by Danielle Steele and Treason by Stuart Woods. January Book Club Choice is This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel. This is a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick also. The novel has been described like this, “a novel about revelations, transformations, fairy tales, and family. And it’s about the ways this is how it always is: Change is always hard and miraculous and hard again, parenting is always a leap into the unknown with crossed fingers and full hearts, children grow but not always according to plan. And families with secrets don’t get to keep them forever.” You’ve got plenty of time to read this, we don’t meet until January 27!

Democrats to Caucus in LaurensOne of Iowa's famous Presidential caucuses will occur at the Laurens-Marathon school at 7 pm on Monday, Feb 3, 2020. People who live in the Swan Lake precinct (who vote at the Laurens City Hall) are eligible to attend. The caucus selects leadership for the Democratic party in Pocahontas County by choosing one man and one woman from each precinct to form a county-wide central committee. It will also begin the process of choosing a President of the United States by naming delegates to a county convention in March. Presidential candidates who have more support at the caucus will win more of the delegates. The Laurens caucus will be called to order by Amber Evans, but anyone can then run for the office of caucus chair. Caucus voters may also offer platform planks for the party to adopt and will be able to help Iowa candidates get on the ballot by signing their nomination petitions. The caucus will last about an hour. Voters who are not already Democrats may change their registration on the night of the caucus. Anyone old enough to vote next November may participate. Children are welcome. Persons needing a ride should call 845-4496. The location of any Iowa caucus can be found at https://iowademocrats.org/2020-caucuses/

Women, Land and Legacy MeetingDo you think you are really not spending that much to manage your household, but just don’t have a way to prove it? Do you ever wonder if there’s a way to recognize how well you have been doing to keep family living costs in check? Are you concerned that there’s one household expense that‘s too sensitive a topic to discuss? Benchmarking can help you come up with what you need to address these kinds of questions. Annie’s participants will learn in the ‘new’ one-hour workshop how to compare farm family expenses with data, establish a reality check on how much living expenses a family can expect the farm to pay and explore how benchmarking helps make better decisions. Explore how the business skill of ’benchmarking’ is used for production agriculture when comparing farm financial performance. Go beyond traditional benchmarking that producers and lenders use to measure a farm’s financial position and performance over time. Experience benchmarking’s value when applied to farm family living expenses. Carol Ehlers from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is going to speak about what is new in Family Living costs at the Pocahontas Extension Office Thursday, January 9 at 1:30 p.m. Please RSVP to Lexie Seuntjens at 712-335-3103 or [email protected].

Dry Manure Applicator Certification Workshops Offered in FebruaryIowa State University Extension and Outreach, in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, will offer manure applicator certification workshops for dry/solid manure operators on six different dates and locations in February. These workshops meet manure applicator certification requirements for both confinement site manure applicators and commercial manure applicators who primarily apply dry or solid manure. “The information in this workshop will benefit not only those needing certification, but anyone using dry or solid sources of manure as a nutrient resource,” said Dan Andersen, ISU Ag and Biosystems Engineering assistant professor and coordinator of the manure applicator certification program. The workshops are free to attend and open to all. Applicators will be required to submit certification forms and fees to the Iowa DNR to meet manure applicator certification requirements. Register for one of the workshops by calling the number listed with the selected site. All workshops begin at 1 p.m.• Feb. 10, Adair County, Warren Cultural

Pocahontas Master Gardeners to Hold Winter Webcast SeriesThe Pocahontas County office of ISU Extension and Outreach will host the Master Gardener winter webcast series February 11, March 10, and April 14 at 5:00 PM at 305 N Main, Pocahontas. Speakers for this year’s series were chosen based on current issues and Master Gardener volunteer interest, according to Susan DeBlieck, Master Gardener state coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach. Participants will learn about climate change, native plants, and get tips for designing gardens that encourage children to spend more time outdoors. “The webcast series gives Master Gardener volunteers a chance to continue their learning, which they can apply to their volunteer projects within the community,” DeBlieck said. Contact the Pocahontas County office of ISU Extension and Outreach for specific details about how you can participate. All webcasts count toward Master Gardener continuing education hours and last an hour. Topics and speakers: • Iowa Weather: With a changing climate, Iowa will be warmer and wetter. State Climatologist Justin Glisan, PhD, from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, will share what people can do to adapt to changing growing conditions. • Bring Kids in the Garden: State Master Gardener Coordinator Susan DeBlieck wants adults to help get youth outdoors every day. She’ll share ideas for Master Gardener volunteer project sites and youth landscape design tips. • Explore the Ada Hayden Herbarium: Love native plants? Deborah Lewis is the curator of the Ada Hayden Herbarium. Learn about early Iowa botanists, explore the herbarium and Deb’s favorite native plants. What would we find if we had full-access to the Ada Hayden Herbarium for an hour-long scavenger hunt without worrying about “museum rules” and damaging the specimens (or getting squished between the moveable rows of cabinets)? First, we might find out what the Herbarium is, how its samples (specimens) are stored, and why the Herbarium is important in teaching and research. Next, participants would track down some favorite specimens – old, rare, lovely, recent, odd… Then, from these specimens, we could perhaps find clues to the stories of a few of the many collectors of Iowa’s native plants who are represented in the Herbarium – and how their specimens and research results are still being used! The scavenger hunt list includes: Indian-grass, packet, Louis Pammel, morel, plant press, orchid… and, of course, Ada Hayden.

Writing Your Retirement Paycheck- PocahontasHow can I be sure my retirement funds will last my lifetime? This important question will be addressed in an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach workshop January 16 and 23, 2020 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Pocahontas County Extension Office, 305 N Main Street, Pocahontas, IA 50574. Writing Your Retirement Paycheck is designed to provide information needed by those approaching retirement within the next ten years. The workshop outlines key factors to consider prior to retirement and describes two strategies for structuring your retirement income. “For most of us,” says Carol Ehlers, Human Sciences Specialist in family finance, “our paychecks have been determined by someone else all our lives. But in retirement, many of us are responsible to write our own paychecks. How will we know how big it should be?” According to Ehlers, who will lead the workshop, topics include: inflation, health costs, Social Security, required minimum distributions, annuities, and more. “Individuals need to make their own decisions about retirement,” says Ehlers “but clear and non-commercial information is a necessary ingredient for decision-making.” Ehlers points out that even those who work with a trusted financial professional must ultimately make the decisions themselves. A financial professional can suggest or recommend products and strategies, but it is the consumer who decides and then lives with the results of the decisions. A fee of $35 for the Writing Your Retirement Paycheck workshop will help to off-set direct expenses and to support the Human Sciences County Extension Program. Register online: http://bit.ly/wyrp14270 , by January 13, 2020. For questions contact Lexi Seuntjens at 712-335-3103 phone or [email protected].

Confinement Site Manure Applicator Workshops Scheduled Confinement site manure applicators and anyone interested in learning about manure issues should plan to attend a two-hour workshop offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in January or February. These workshops are offered in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. There is no fee to attend, but applicators will need to pay certification fees to complete certification requirements. “Iowa law requires confinement site manure applicators to attend two hours of continuing education each year of their three-year certification period or take and pass an exam once every three years,” said Dan Andersen, assistant professor, ISU Ag and Biosystems Engineering and coordinator of the manure applicator certification program. A total of 62 counties will participate in the confinement site manure applicator workshops. In addition, a series of six dry/solid manure applicator certification meetings will be held in February. ISU Extension and Outreach county offices have a complete list of workshop dates and locations, and a list is available at http://www.agronext.iastate.edu/immag/certification/confinementsitebroch.... The workshops serve as initial certification for those applicators who are not currently certified, recertification for those renewing licenses and continuing education for those applicators in their second or third year of their license. Due to uniform certification deadlines, applicators are encouraged to attend workshops prior to March 1, to avoid being assessed a late fee of $12.50 for those who are re-certifying. Those unable to attend one of the workshops need to schedule time with their extension county office to watch the training video. Due to scheduling conflicts, many extension offices will no longer accept walk-in appointments to watch these videos but do offer scheduled dates and times to provide this training. If you can’t attend training during one of the scheduled reshow dates at your county extension office, you will be charged a $10 fee to view the training at your convenience. If attending the workshops or watching the two-hour training video is not convenient, confinement site manure applicators may contact their local DNR field office to schedule an appointment to take the certification exam to meet certification requirements. Applicators also have an online certification option, in which an applicator can take the training online at the DNR MAC eLearning site, https://elearning-dnr.iowa.gov/. The applicator will need to sign in and get an A&A account. Contact Pocahontas County Extension and Outreach for more information about the Manure Applicator Certification Program, or visit http://www.agronext.iastate.edu/immag/mac.html.
