Third and Final Month in TanzaniaBy: Rachel Potter

While serving over the last three months in Mbuguni, Arusha, Tanzania, I was able to immerse myself in the culture and daily routines. I benefited from Swahili lessons, interacted with people from the local village, and learned to cook and eat different African food. I experienced life-changing memories and formed relationships to last a lifetime! During my last month, I was able to travel to Moshi, Tanzania to visit the Kilimanjaro Leprosy Project. Unfortunately, there is still a stigma towards people who have leprosy and they are treated as unclean and untouchable. The people who live there, who have leprosy, do not have active wounds, and therefore, are not contagious. It was a wonderful experience to shake hands and

hug people who rarely receive any physical touch. It was amazing to give them the attention that they long for. Another day trip was spent transporting two people to the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi. A man who has a prosthetic leg had suffered a break in that leg, which put him on crutches. We took him to the hospital to have it fixed and when the procedure was over, he was able to walk without the crutches. The young girl who was with us, was in need of a new, larger boot to fit her foot. She was born with a foot turned where she walked on the top of her foot, instead of the bottom. parent meetings and informed the parents about how the attendance and test scores have increased with the food program being implemented at the schools. The food program is a partnership between STEMM, the school, parents, and the community. STEMM provides the cooks’ salary, cooking oil, and salt. The school, parents, and community provide the firewood, beans, and corn. It is important that this is a partnership because these people realize that they are helping with the program and see the progress that is being made. During my last week in Tanzania, I was able to visit Neyesu, the child I sponsor through World Vision. She is part of the Maasai tribe, which is

one of the only remaining tribes in Tanzania. It took five hours to get to the very remote village and the last two hours of travel were in areas with no roads. Neyesu’s family and community were extremely welcoming during my visit. We spent time talking and getting to know each other with the help of a translator, exchanging gifts, and eating goat. I would strongly recommend anyone who has a sponsor child to visit their child if they ever have the opportunity. Even though I had several opportunities for a variety of ways to serve, I enjoyed the time I spent daily with the 20 children who live at the STEMM Children’s Home and the numerous staff there. We played games, sang songs, ate together, and had a

special prayer time every day. I will treasure those times for the rest of my life. Lastly, I want to thank everyone for the prayers and financial support. Through your generous donations, I received enough to make this trip possible for myself, and also had money leftover to donate to a project at STEMM in Tanzania. The drip irrigation system that has been currently used at the STEMM farm, recently broke down and is in need of a new motor for the pump. The new motor has a price tag of approximately $1800 installed. The farm manager and workers did not have any hope of this being repaired in the near future, until we had a discussion as to where these additional donations could best be used to benefit everyone. I am pleased to report that a new motor has been ordered and will soon be installed, allowing them to continue to use the current irrigation system, as well as looking forward to the possibility of an additional system to help out in the future. Through the donations I received, I was able to pay for the pump to get fixed. This will help many people at STEMM from guaranteeing the farmers a job, to providing food for the children living at STEMM, and profit from selling the produce. Thank you once again…many good things happened this summer from the generosity of so many!

Pool Closed for Season - Still Making a Splash! The pool is officially closed for the season and we had another successful year. We had 45 season passes for the summer, which is similar to the last few years. For swimming lessons, there were 62 little swimmers for group lessons and 10 for private. Lessons were instructed by our certified lifeguards for the summer: Allison Graff, Anthony Gordon, Elizabeth Runneberg, Ethan Runneberg, Jadelyn Richardson, Jordan Saunders, Kennedy Tate, Rhianna Aschenbrenner, Riley Oxenreider, Sydney Harrold, and Tori Reese. Although the water has left the pool, we’re still actively raising funds for the planned repairs. Please send your donations today to be included in the Bellinghausen Challenge!

At the Library with Glenda MulderAugust 29, 2018

WooHoo! Three day weekend ahead! We all love those, right?! Naturally, we will be closed all three days. Be sure to stop at the library soon for extra checkouts so you don’t run out of books and movies this weekend! OK ladies, mark October 9th on your calendar and plan to attend our Women’s Self Defense Class! This will be presented by the North Iowa Women's Self-Defense Initiative out of Mason City. From their website, “Even here in rural Iowa, violence against women is a very real issue. One in four women will be the victim of domestic abuse in her lifetime. One in five will be the victim of sexual assault. One in eight will be the victim of stalking. Even children and teenagers aren’t safe. One in four girls and one in seven boys will be molested before the age of eighteen. Self-defense has many components; learning about predators and how they operate, situational awareness, assertiveness skills, verbal defense, your physical presence, and physical self-defense techniques that are easy to perform and easy to remember. Women who fight back against their attackers are able to get away successfully four times out of five.” This class is designed for women age 13 and up. No charge for this class, it will

be sponsored by the Laurens Public Library Foundation. New novels this week include: In His Father’s Footsteps by Danielle Steel, Leverage in Death by J.D. Robb, Safe and Sound by Fern Michaels, First Love by Beverly Lewis, Walking Shadows by Faye Kellerman and Texas Free by Janet Dailey. We also received the 2019 versions (how is this possible?!) of The Old Farmer’s Almanac and the Guinness Book of World Records. I don’t know where our Crafty Deb comes up with all these fun ideas! We (Yes, I think even I can do this one!) will be yarn wrapping and decorating wine bottles at our Take it Tuesday, September 4th. Stop by the library or check our Facebook page to see the sample, then sign up (We have to know how many wine bottles we need to empty!) to join us!

This will be the twenty-third tour of this “traveling museum”, sponsored by the Central Iowa Model A Club. Starting out in Johnston, north of Des Moines, the group plans to lunch in Fonda and see the many wonders of Gib and Jan Alpers’ Fonda Museum before continuing on. Some five million Model A Fords were made from 1928 to 1931. The public is welcome to take in this bit of America’s history, September 17th, with the first cars arriving shortly after twelve o’clock noon, and lining Fonda’s Main Street for the next couple hours. Be prepared for what these proud owners enjoy doing most: talking about their cars!

Grain Drying, Handling and Storage Handbook Now Available for DownloadMidWest Plan Service’s award-winning publication “Grain Drying, Handling, and Storage Handbook” (MWPS-13) is now available for download through the MidWest Plan Service website. The publication had previously only been available as a printed hard copy. The book provides information on the whys and hows of developing a total system for grain drying, handling and storage. It discusses how the design and location of a grain system can help avoid bottlenecks during harvest and how grain handling components can be tied to performance, capacity and convenience. It also includes information on the function and operation of equipment used for holding wet grain, maintaining grain quality after harvest, handling large volumes of grain and the need and importance of safety and automation. The publication was written by Dirk Maier, professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State University, along with experts from the other MidWest Plan Service university partners. “This handbook is in its third edition and has always been a collaborative project between engineers from several universities leading this field,” said Maier. “Our handbook has more than 150 pages packed full with expert advice on how to plan a modern grain drying, handling and storage system.” The downloadable format is available for purchase through the MidWest Plan Service website at https://www-mwps.sws.iastate.edu/catalog/grain-handling-storage/grain-drying-handling-and-storage-handbook-pdf, while printed copies can still be purchased. MidWest Plan Service is a university-based publishing cooperative dedicated to disseminating research-based, peer-reviewed and unbiased publications that support the outreach missions of the North Central Region land-grant universities. Established in 1929 and publishing since 1932, it is one of the oldest regional cooperative efforts of land-grant universities in the United States. The publication recently received the Blue Ribbon Award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE).

Yard and Garden: Late Summer PlantingsSeeds germinate fast when the soil is already nice and warm, which makes late summer a good time to rejuvenate lawns and plant fall vegetable crops of spinach, lettuce, peas and kale. Or plant a new tree. ISU Extension and Outreach horticulturists share tips on late summer and early fall plantings in the yard and garden. To have additional questions answered, contact the horticulture hotline at [email protected] or call 515-294-3108 When is the best time to sow grass seed in Iowa? Mid-August to mid-September is the best time to seed new lawns and overseed existing lawns in Iowa. A late summer seeding has several advantages over spring seeding. The seeds of cool-season grasses germinate quickly in the warm soil of late summer. The warm days and cool nights of early fall promote rapid turfgrass growth. The growing grass also has less competition from weeds as few weed seeds germinate in late summer or fall. Is late summer/early fall a good time to plant trees? Mid-August through September is an excellent time to plant pine, spruce and other

evergreens. (Evergreens planted in late October or November may not have adequate time to become established before the onset of winter and could be subject to desiccation injury and death.) Deciduous trees and shrubs can be planted from August through early November. Water newly planted trees every day for three or four days and then gradually reduce the frequency of watering. When watering, slowly apply water to the rootball and the surrounding soil. A thorough watering every seven to 10 days (in dry weather) should be sufficient three to four weeks after planting. Continue watering until the ground freezes in winter. Can perennials be planted in late summer? Late summer/early fall is an excellent time to plant many perennials. It is also a good time to move or divide perennials, such as peony, daylily, garden phlox and Oriental poppy. Perennials planted in late summer or early fall should be mulched with several inches of straw, pine needles or other materials in late fall. Mulching helps prevent repeated freezing and thawing of the soil that may heave plants out of the ground. Drying of the exposed plant crowns and roots can cause severe damage or death. Which vegetables can be planted in late summer? Several vegetables can be planted in late summer for a fall crop. For a fall crop, plant beets, carrots, Swiss chard, kohlrabi and kale in early to mid-August, plant leaf lettuce and spinach in late

August to early September, and plant radishes from mid- to late September. Seed germination in late summer is often rather poor due to dry soil conditions. To promote seed germination, plant fall vegetables when the soil is moist after a rain, sow the seeds slightly deeper than spring plantings and lightly water the row after the seeds have been sown.
