On May 2 and 3rd the Alzheimer’s Association presented its 13th Annual Education Conference sponsored by Lafayette General Medical Center. Dr. James W. Simpkins, an internationally recognized expert on brain aging and the therapy for

age-related brain disorders, offered information and guidance in understanding the often complex world of neuropathology and research as it relates to Alzheimer’s disease. Lyn Fontenot was a guest speaker at the evening activities devoted to caregivers. Attendees enjoyed lunch sponsored by AAA Home Health & Hospice and snacks were provided by Correctional Food Services, L.P. and Home Bank. Exhibits were provided by PDI of the South, Kingsley Place, Griswold Special Care, Mobility Products Depot, Amian Health Services, St. Landry Homecare, Compass Health, Acadian Home Care and Evangeline Medical and Nursing Supply, Inc.

The Yandle’s Soiree: An Evening to Remember Ray and Marilyn Yandle were honored by the Alzheimer's Association for their long-standing work for the Association. A plantation-themed party in their honor was held in July at the City Club – River Ranch. The Yandles received a “Key to the City” at the celebration and also received special thanks from National, State and Local Alzheimer's Association officials. The event was a great time for all who attended and was a terrific fund-raiser to assist the effort to help those with Alzheimer’s.

On May 2nd Broussard-Kelly Financial Group sponsored a wine reception at River Oaks for doctors and psychiatrist who work with persons who have Alzheimer’s disease. Guests enjoyed fine wines donated by Philippe’s Wine Cellars and mouth watering hors d’ oeuvres and spent time talking with Dr. Simpkins to better understand Alzheimer’s disease.

Shown at the presentation ceremony is, Tammy Reardon, Alzheimer's Association Development Director for Louisiana, Joan Heymann Bergmann of Covington, LA, and Robert Stephens, Executive Director of the Louisiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

“Kiss-a-Pig” Penny Drive Contest Nets $1,000 for Alexandria Memory Walk

Kingsley Place Alexandria on Friday, August 17th became a Petting Zoo. It was complete with miniature horses, a donkey, a goat, a horse, baby chicks, baby ducks, rabbits, a baby pig and puppies! Refreshments were donated by the local Coca-Cola office. The Petting Zoo culminated a Penny Drive competition between Kingsley Place – Alexandria and Friendship House, an adult daycare facility. All proceeds were donated to the Alexandria Memory Walk. The Executive Director of the facility who raised

the least in the Penny Drive agreed to “Kiss a Pig”. To the dismay of Judy White, the Executive Director of Kingsley Place Alexandria, the winner of the competition was Friendship House. Looking on with great relief is Julie Morris, Executive Director at Friendship House.

Volunteer If you're unable to participate in the actual walk, there are still plenty of ways you can get involved to move the cause forward.

Contact your local chapter to find out how you can help.

Team captains – You don't have to walk to be a team captain! As a captain, your big job is rallying walkers and

motivating them to raise funds and awareness for our cause.

Event planning – Enjoy details? Help your local Alzheimer's Association coordinate the actual walk and help with tasks like securing a location, planning activities for before and after the

walk and being on-hand to cheer walkers on!

Local event committee – There are plenty of responsibilities – before and on the day of Memory Walk – that

need dedicated volunteers.
