SAMPLE OF THESIS WORK

Exploring the question of how you “build an atmosphere” takes on multiple meanings through studies of space, light, shadow, materiality, assembly, and more. Atmosphere is explored through the senses and spaces that encourage the use of each particular sense (sight, sound, smell, thermoception, balance, chronoception, pressure, and touch) are designed. One space is then designed combining multiple senses and creating a full sensory experience unique to each occupant.

A STUDIO AND A RESIDENCE

Studio project - Spring 2014.

Given a predetermined site and the program of a studio space and a residence for the principal architect, this project became a study of structure. Working within the dramatic site boundries, individual spaces were customized to best suit each specific program and create a relationship between work and home.

A courtyard inbetween the two buildings allowed each space to see natural light and created a degree of separation between the office and the home.

A LIBRARY IN SWITZERLAND

Studio project - Spring 2013. While living and studying in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, the project prompt of desiging a library for the local community was given. The flat site is centrally located in town.

The library was required to include books and resources for all ages. A personal decision was to include a cafe in the project, along with spaces individualized for each age group to encourage lingering and reading.

The requirement that a wall section be included in final drawings was met with the self-imposed challenge to portray, not only a traditional section, but all drawings in a new way.

A TENNIS CENTER VIEWING PLATFORM Architectural Internship - Summer 2014.

During an internship with Glave and Holmes Architecture, the primary responsibility given to me was to design a viewing platform for a set of tennis courts at Christopher Newport University.

Along with my mentor, I proposed initial ideas to the client, worked with the firm’s principal to make design proposals, and further develop the top proposals in schematic design. Work included sketching by hand, code research, meeting with consultants, on-site surveying and measuring, and developing proposals in AutoCAD. Also included were presentation drawings for the client in Adobe Photoshop.

BLOCKOUT COMPETITION

Competition Entry - Spring 2014

An annual Virginia Tech AIAS-sponsored competition invites students to form teams and compete to design and build a temporary installation out of donated CMU blocks on the plaza outside of the school of Architecture + Design.

The winners were selected by a jury of faculty judges. My team of five fourth-year students created an installation that served as an ode to one of the great construction methods of ancient architecture - the arch. The installation ultimately earned us second place in the competition.

A ROOM IN A GARDEN

Studio project - Fall 2012.

Presented with the challenge of designing a “room in a garden,” the main goal became encouraging human interaction and immersion into the natural world. This was achieved by creating a structure that supported the transition between the two worlds.

To reinforce the connection between the man-made building and the naturally occuring conditions of the site, windows and aperatures were designed according to sunlight and win patterns specific to the area.

A one-foot separation between the overhangs on the two buildings was designed to allow rainwater to fall between the buildings creating a beautiful water wall and encouraging interaction with the water as occupants move from one building to the other.

AN ADDITION AND ALTERATION

Architectural Internship - Summer 2013.

Throughout the couse of a summer internship with M.B. Hearn Architecture, I worked primarily on an addition and alteration for a house that was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Tasks included on-site documentation of existing conditions and measurements, drawing existing plans and elevations in Auto-CAD, and assisting in proposing 3 schemes to the client. The job also included drawing a site plan and calculating things such as existing and proposed building and impervious coverage. Another responsibility was comparing the calculated numbers to town code allowances, which involved research. At the end of the internship, a packet was put together to submit to the town for a variance.

A MOUNTAIN RETREAT

Studio project - Spring 2012.

A site in Eggleston, Virginia that was situated on the New River was the perfect location for a series of mountain bungalows. Each bungalow was perfectly suited for one to two occupants and featured atmospheric qualities designed to encourage rest, relaxation, and reflection.

Stay overnight or spend a few minutes by a reflecting pool while being surrounded by the safety of the woods. Enjoy a picnic take a break during a hike to sit in one of these rooms and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
