A fundamental part of the Australian Cricket Pathway, the Cricket Australia Under 15 Female National Championships have been the largest contributor of talent to the National team since its establishment. Lauren Cheatle played in the WT20 World Cup in India last year at 17 years of age and other stars such as, Jess Jonassen, Ellyse Perry and Captain Meg Lanning have all trodden the same path you are about to undertake.
As players, you enter an exciting phase of your sporting journey, I encourage you all to embrace the opportunity by exemplifying the cricketing spirit.
I wish you all the very best over the next 7 days and I look forward to witnessing your development into the stars of the future in the seasons to come.

AMANDA-JADE IS PROOF DREAMS DO COME TRUE4
At just 15 years of age, Amanda-Jade Wellington became the youngest ever player to represent South Australia in a senior match. Wind the clock forward four years and she’s now mixing with her idols having made her One-Day International debut for Australia in front of family and friends against South Africa in November.
Developing her skills as a youngster with her brother at Smithfield Cricket Club, cricket was always a big part of the Wellington family.
“Growing up, cricket was a part of the family, back yard cricket, indoor cricket, outdoor cricket, state and then nationally, cricket always reminded me of my family,” said Wellington.
Wellington’s skills with both bat and ball didn’t go unnoticed and she soon found herself in her first representative team at the age of 10.
“At that age I didn’t even know women’s cricket was a thing, I was just hitting the ball on Tea Tree Gully oval while my brother had training and then someone approached me and told me I should go try out with the SAPSASA team.”
Her progress continued at a rapid rate, competing at her first Under 15 National Championship well before her 13th birthday and being named Player of the Championship in 2011–12.
At 15, Wellington played her first match for match for South Australia’s senior side and in the same summer, came agonisingly close to breaking fellow Scorpion and Adelaide Striker Sarah Coyte’s (7–17) record bowling figures with 7–20 at the Cricket Australia Under 18 National Championships.
“Cricket for me has always been enjoyable, I love cricket and can’t get enough, I could sit down all day watching cricket doesn’t matter if it’s T20 Blast or the South Australian Redbacks - whatever cricket is on I’ll go and watch!”
A cricket fanatic, Wellington soon found her idol in fellow South Australian and Australian all-rounder Shelley Nitschke.
“As a young spinner I always worked closely and looked up to her, she is very professional on and off the field.”
Wellington proved she was a star still on the rise on New Year’s Eve last year when, playing alongside Nitschke, she bamboozled the Perth Scorchers, snaring three wickets to help the Adelaide Strikers claim victory.
Following a string of impressive performances for the Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars (women’s Australia ‘A’) and yet another stellar season with South Australia, Wellington was called up to the national team in November to live out her childhood dream – taking a wicket with her first ball.
“Making my debut for the Southern Stars was amazing and really special, especially because it was in front of my family and my partner.”
Having reached a level so many can only dream about, Wellington’s aspirations are pretty simple.
“To maintain my spot in the Australia squad as well as learning things about my own game throughout my career but more importantly, going out of my way to help the next generation of cricketers.”

Have you played cricket in the past? What level did you play?
Yes, I currently play for Melton Cricket Club and previously played at an under 17 state level. I am a current member of the Australian Women’s Indoor Cricket team and have been playing cricket for the past 20 years. I love the game and enjoy competing at all levels. I have travelled to South Africa, England, Sri Lanka and New Zealand playing Indoor Cricket.
What’s your coaching philosophy – what’s your mantra, key messages to your players?
My coaching philosophy is to develop and foster a positive team culture and encourage an environment where athletes can learn and develop skills as individuals which will contribute to the team’s success. I believe in creating an environment that allows athletes to be innovative, train hard and enjoy the experience both on and off the field. Trust, communication and feedback are very important to me and my coaching style.
What is your approach to a National Championship?
Some would say winning and losing isn’t an option (said with a smile of course). We will approach
the Championships with a positive attitude around learning and enjoying the moment. The squad has been training hard and working on developing skills and match awareness which will put us in good stead for the National Championships.
What message would you have for aspiring coaches?
Seek every opportunity and control your own destiny. You are not just a coach but a mentor, teacher, friend, councillor and whatever else the athletes trust you to be. Appreciate the people around you and learn from others.
What is your experience at national carnival level and above?
Since 2000 I have been attending National Championships as a player, manager, assistant coach and coach, so let’s just say it’s in my blood and something I love to do. Fortunately, I have also been travelling at International carnivals getting to see how other countries operate. For the first time this year went to Japan and Samoa as the Japan Women’s Head Coach which was an experience that tested all communication skills, and the ability to adapt culture differences - an amazing coaching experience!

The National Championships provide a pathway for not only players and coaches, but umpires as well.
The National Championships provide a challenging environment for umpires, who are required to umpire day-in-day-out, standing in matches with often new partners and managing unfamiliar teams at sometimes foreign venues. The Cricket Australia Under 15 National Championship umpires have all been appointed by Cricket ACT. The Cricket ACT State Umpiring Director has appointed all umpires for each match of the Championship. Each umpire will be provided assessments and feedback on their performances to help them on their journeys through the umpiring pathway.

2016/2017 CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEWThe competition will be fierce at the 2016 –17 Cricket Australia Under 15 Female National Championships, with the best junior talent from across the country competing for the honour of being crowned national champions.
Eight squads will vie for that title in Canberra, in what promises to be a highly entertaining week of cricket.
ACT/NSW Country claimed their first ever underage title last year after defeating Queensland in the Final. For the first time ever, Victoria Country have been invited to field a side to compete in the nation’s capital along with their metropolitan counterparts. The Victorian Country side replaces the Cricket Australia XI who competed at last year’s competition.
In what promises to be a very memorable carnival, each team has the opportunity to play on the beautiful Manuka Oval and experience the thrill that comes with playing on an international quality venue.
The competition will see each side play each other once over the course of the competition, which consists of four 40-over matches and four Twenty20 matches across six days.
2015/2016 CHAMPIONSHIPS REVIEW In the tournament’s most recent edition, ACT/NSW Country won their first ever National Championship title over the highly fancied Queensland.
ACT/NSW Country skipper Rachel Trenaman scored 21 and then took 4/17 from 7 overs in the final to help her side take down Queensland in an entertaining final at Lindisfarne Oval in Hobart.
ACT/NSW Country batted first, and accumulated a competitive score after being bowled out for 134 in the 39th over. In reply, the Queenslanders were in trouble early after being reduced to 2–19 and Rachel Trenaman bowled the ACT/NSW Country side to victory inside 30 overs with an excellent display of leg spin bowling.
Victoria finished the Championship in third place while NSW Metropolitan rounded out the top four. The CA XI participated for the first time last, finishing seventh.
