Tuesday, Feb 9, 1869MEliza & I called at Mrs.&c. I went in to see Mrs. Walker afew minutes & then into Mrs. Pitman’s. Mrs. Shepherd had just gohome. Mother took tea at Mrs.Brown’s. In the evening I read to father again. I wrote to Grandm& Mrs. Jennison.

I ironed in the forenoon & went up to meeting p.m. Heard Sallie’s lesson afterward & then called at Mrs. Chase’s, Mrs. Goodwin’s, Mrs. Mayo’s & at Mayo’s Hall to see some velocipade riding with Mrs. Pitman. Found Mrs. Shepherd here & she spent the evening. I sewed a little. Thursday, Feb 18, 1869 Mother intended to go up and have her photograph taken, but it snowed some until the middle of the afternoon so that she did not go. I studied Latin and read all the afternoon. Called into Mrs. Pitman’s on my way to meeting, but found that then was to be home & came home & read in “Norwood”. Friday, Feb 19, 1869 Pleasant. Mother went to have her pictures taken & E. went with her. I cooked a turkey &c for dinner. I studied some & after tea went after the milk at Mrs. Walkers. Mrs. Douty & Lucy, Mrs. Meder called. I sat up until after the Express came in about eleven as Zach Favor called to leave word about Eliza’s going. Saturday, Feb 20, 1869 A little colder. Eliza left for Portland about five a.m. I made some cookies a.m. and heard Sallie’s lesson & read p.m. Finished “Norwood” in the evening. Sunday, Feb 21, 1869 A beautiful, warm day. Mr. Lee read a sermon from 2 Kings 5:18 a.m. Mr. Marsh preached from Rev. 22:19 – p.m. Mrs. Brown stopped here at noon. I went to prayer meeting in the evening. Monday, Feb 22, 1869 A little snow in the morning but it cleared off beautifully during the forenoon. In the afternoon I went with mother to the photograph rooms & then we called on Mrs. Dinsmore. I took from the library 1st vol. Stephen’s Travels in Central America. I sewed the most of the evening. Mrs. E. Mayo was in.

Tuesday, Feb 23, 1869 It began to storm early in the morning & continued the most of the day. I sewed all day & read in the evening. Wednesday, Feb 24, 1869 A very pleasant day. I ironed &c shoveled the front path a.m. & went to prayer-meeting & then called Mrs. B. C. Chase & Mrs. W. K’s G’s & then went into Mrs. Goodwins where I stayed until nearly nine. I found Mrs. Douty here when I returned. Thursday, Feb 25, 1869 Pleasant but quite windy. Capt Chase & uncle Elisha called in forenoon. In afternoon mother & I called on Capt C’s. wife at Mrs. Robinsons, also called at Mrs. Brown’s, Mrs. Landers, Mrs. Palmer, Blethen’s & Hall’s. An agent of the Florence S. machine called in the evening. Friday, Feb 26, 1869 We all went down to Mrs. Brown’s & took dinner and stayed until past four and had a very pleasant time. After tea I went down to the office & called into Mrs. Putnam’s and stayed until half past eight. Mr. Friend & C. Paine were at our house and stayed until about ten. Saturday, Feb 27, 1869 A heavy snow storm during the night. Our walk was filled up even. We sent for a man to shovel it out. I made pies &c a.m. In the afternoon I sewed a little & wrote to Frank. After tea went after the milk & then read until nearly nine. Sunday, Feb 28, 1869 Very pleasant, but quite cold. I went into the methodist church & heard elder Marsh preach from Daniel 5:5-6 a.m. P.M. at the same place I heard Mr. Redlow from Joshua 24:15. Attended a very good prayer meeting in the evening. After supper I played a few tunes on the piano. Monday, Mar 1, 1869 Very cold & pleasant. As we did not wash I got considerable time to sew and wrote to Seth. Mrs. Brown spent the most of the evening here.

Tuesday, Mar 2, 1869 Still quite cold. After dinner I went into Mrs. Pitman’s a few minutes to inquire about Mrs. Chase. After tea I went in to see her & bid her good bye but after waiting awhile I left without seeing. Read some. Wednesday, Mar 3, 1869 A beautiful day. Uncle Elisha M. called in the forenoon. I had to lie down about eleven and did not get up until nearly one. I finished my pillow cases in the afternoon. I lay down about five & went to bed a half past seven. Thursday, Mar 4, 1869 Quite pleasant until about two when the winds began to blow & it snowed some all the p.m. & evening. I wrote to Lizzie Rich & uncle Hannibal. In the evening finished the first vol. of Stevens’ Travels. Mother spent the day at Mrs. Brown’s. A few soldiers came in to see father. Friday, Mar 5, 1869 A little snow last night & quite blustering during the day. I went down to Mrs. Brown’s about ten and helped her quilt. Stayed as long as I could see to work. Went into Mrs. Pitman’s a few minutes on my return. Read the Journal of Chemistry & sewed a little before retiring. Saturday, Mar 6, 1869 The coldest morning of the season. In the p.m. E. Mayo & Stanley P. called. I stitched some pillow cases. After tea I went up to Mrs. Vaughn’s & Mrs. Goodwin’s & Mrs. Crocker’s. Began a letter to Frank on my return. Sunday, Mar 7, 1869 Very windy & quite cold. Mr. Pitman read one of Prof. Shepherd’s sermons from the text Math 6:22-23. Mother & I went to the Baptist church p.m. Mr. P. preached from Luke 23:22. Monday, Mar 8, 1869 Pleasant but quite cold & windy. I went up to Mrs. Goodwin’s before three o’cl’k & assisted some. About eighty old & young there in the

evening to a surprise party at which the gave her a salver, ice pitcher & two goblets. B. came home about half past twelve with Augusta. Tuesday, Mar 9, 1869 I was busy helping mother cook &c the most of the day. I wrote to Eliza. Went up after the milk and tried to read some but was so sleepy that I retired before mother returned from Mrs. Horston’s where she & Mrs. Douty spent the evening. More moderate. Wednesday, Mar 10, 1869 A little snow which turned to rain towards night. I ironed &c a.m. and wrote to Althea and cousin Hannah. Rec’d a letter from Seth in the morning containing a picture of himself & his friend Tredway. Read in the evening. Thursday, Mar 11, 1869 Very pleasant & mild. The Goodwin family took tea here and all but E.O. & J. stayed until half past nine. The three went to Mr. Brockways’. Friday, Mar 12, 1869 Mild & beautiful. Mother went up & invited Mrs. Douty and then I went over to invite Mrs. Pullen. I also called into Mrs. Cook’s & did a little shopping. Called into Mrs. Pitman’s carried Mrs. Longer’s plates home & Mrs. Walker’s pails. Mrs. P., D., Ms. Nonston & Mrs. Brown took tea & spent the evening. Saturday, Mar 13, 1869 Pleasant. After going to the office and carrying some plants to Mrs. Palmer, I went up to Mrs. G’s & marked things all of the forenoon & served some in the afternoon. Ld [?] lady Hale & Mrs. Buck & Mrs. Williams took tea there. I called on Sarah Abby and then went to meeting at Mrs. Crocker’s. Called for the milk on my way home. Monday, Mar 15, 1869 In the afternoon I went over to Foxcroft on an errant & about seven went up to Mrs. Meder’s and stayed until half past eight and then went over to Dr. Cook’s to watch with his wife. Isaac Blethen brought down the desks from Mrs. G’s for me. Tuesday, Mar 16, 1869 Came home about seven and felt nicely, although I did not sleep more than an hour during the night. I went down to Mrs. Brown’s in the forenoon. Mother went there in the afternoon & stayed until evening. I read & practised some and retired about eight. Mrs. Shepherd called a few minutes. Wednesday, Mar 17, 1869 Asa & Frankie were here to dinner. I went up to prayer meeting and Mrs. Parsons brought me home. In the evening I called for Augusta S. & went to the circle at Mrs. Wyman’s. Returned about half past ten. Thursday, Mar 18, 1869 I went out to the stores in the forenoon & read in the p.m. About eight mother & I walked down to Mrs. Robinson’s to a party of about one hundred & fifty. Mother came home about ten & I an hour later. Friday, Mar 19, 1869 I went up to Mrs. Goodwin’s after doing some errands. I did not stop long & went down to Mrs. Brown’s to get some milk for an oyster stew. P.M. I went up to the library, called at Theo P’s, and then went into Mr. Mayo’s to mark some things for Mrs. W. Returned about dark & found Delia & Carrie here. I went up to Mrs. G’s about eight & rode home with Mrs. Brown. Saturday, Mar 20, 1869 A little snow fell today. I went up after some milk at Mrs. Walker’s after breakfast. Mr. Merrill came to stop over Sunday. I was busy about house until about three & then mended my dress. After tea carried some boiled pork up to Mrs. G’s &

went to the hall to meeting, but there were so few there that they adjourned to the Methodist meeting. I came home. Sunday, Mar 21, 1869 Very windy. Mr. Merrill preached from Isaiah 52:1 a.m. & Deut. 32:31 p.m. I stayed at noon. After tea went after the milk and mother. I went to prayer meeting at the Methodist church. Mr. M. not feeling very well did not go out. Monday, Mar 22, 1869 Pleasant but cold and we did not wash. After tea I went up to Mr. Pitman’s store & looked over some book catalogues with him and then went up to Mrs. Goodwin’s but found no one at home. I wrote to Eliza & Seth. Dr. Cook called for me & I went to watch with his wife. Tuesday, Mar 23, 1869 Got home about half past six. P.M. made a square for Mrs. Cook’s album quilt. I retired about eight in the evening. Quite a storm afternoon & evening. Wednesday, Mar 24, 1869 Pleasant. I went down to the office, up to Martin’s & Mrs. W’s and then up to Mrs. G’s for a short time. A letter came from Frank & Eliza. I was too tired to go up to meeting. In the evening called for Mrs. W. and went to the circle at E. Hales [?] not many there. Thursday, Mar 25, 1869 Ironed in the forenoon. P.M. I went up to Mrs. G’s for a few minutes then went down to the office & called in to see Addie S. who returned last night. On my return wrote to aunt A. and then Lucy & Jennie came to tea. Mrs. Brown came about six & spent the evening. I went to meeting. Sixteen present. Friday, Mar 26, 1869 Pleasant and milder in the afternoon. I called at Mrs. Cochran’s to see her & Esther. Then I called on Eliza Woodbury. I went up to Mrs. W’s after milk and practised & read in the evening.

Saturday, Mar 27, 1869 Considerable snow in the night and rain in the morning but it cleared off very ___[?] & beautiful. I cut out patch work in a.m. P.M. called on Mrs. Nouston [?] Edes, Hayes & E. Mayo’s. After tea wrote to Althea, went after the milk & went into Mr. Pitman’s & Kitty’s piano was brought while I was there. Sunday, Mar 28, 1869 Very pleasant & mild. Mr. Kimball of Dexter preached from 2d Cor 4:17-18 a.m. & Romans 12:12 p.m. I went into Mrs. Meder’s a few minutes at noon. Mr. K. preached at half past six. Monday, Mar 29, 1869 Quite pleasant. I wrote to Eliza & Althea. Tuesday, Mar 30, 1869 A real rainy day. I worked on patchwork and evening read in “Travels in China”. Had a miserable feeling day. Wednesday, Mar 31, 1869 Some rain today. I did not feel well and had to lie down at noon. After tea I went after the milk & carried a letter which I wrote to Frank in the p.m. to the office. Augusta called for me to go to the circle at Mrs. Flint’s but I did not feel able & went to bed by half past seven. Thursday, April 1, 1869 Not very pleasant yet. I went to the conference at two o’clock & we had a good meeting although only about sixteen present. I called into Mr. Pitman’s store, & also to see Augusta S. & Mrs. Longre. After tea played a few tunes & went after the milk & went to meeting at the F. W. Baptist church. Monday, April 5, 1869 Pleasant. Aunt H. Mary Ann & Asa came about nine & left at two. After washing I took out the tacks in two chambers. In the evening mother & I went up to Mrs. Doughty’s & returned about ten. I wrote to Seth before I went. Tuesday, April 6, 1869 A fine day. We cleaned the chambers. After ten I went after milk, and called into Mr. Pitman’s. I read in “Noble Life” aloud for an hour & retired at half past eight. Wednesday, April 7, 1869 I ironed in the forenoon & went to meeting p.m. Called into the store with her and then into her house a few minutes. Thursday, April 8, 1869 We cleaned the front hall &c. Very pleasant. I went up to meeting in the evening and although there were only nine there we had a very good meeting. Friday, April 9, 1869 I started from home about seven and called at Mr. Jackson’s, Mr. Colcord’s & McKusick’s. I found Fanny at Mrs. J’s and she came part of the way with me. Saturday, April 10, 1869 Pleasant, but quite windy. I sewed some in the a.m. mother being away the most of the forenoon. I sewed, practiced & wrote to Mrs. Goodwin p.m.

Sunday, April 11, 1869 Pleasant. Mr. Redlow preached from 1st Peter 4:13 a.m. & Phil. 1:27 p.m. Mrs. Jackson handed Mr. Pitman the present from the ladies of twenty-nine dollars. The sermon or informal talk this p.m. was Mr. R’s farewell address. We had a very good prayer meeting in the evening. Monday, April 12, 1869 Pleasant but cloudy at night. I was busy at work the most of the day. After tea went into Mrs. Pitman’s a few minutes on my way for the milk. I began a letter to Seth. Mrs. P. came in here and stayed about an hour. Tuesday, April 13, 1869 Pleasant. Mother went away about six down to Mrs. Brown’s & they went up to Mrs. Jackson’s &c & returned about 11. I shook the back entry & stair carpeting before breakfast. Then ironed & put the carpets down. Wrote to Seth, mended a garment & got supper. In the evening went to a circle at Mrs. Flint’s. Sixteen present & we had a pleasant time. Wednesday, April 14, 1869 Arose at half past five. I arranged my boxes &c and cleared up my chamber to-day. Went to meeting at three. There were seven present and we had a good season. I called at Mrs. Cook’s, Mrs. R. Gilman’s, Mrs. Neath’s and Mrs. Cochran’s and got back about six. Went after the milk and returned about nine. Thursday, April 15, 1869 Very pleasant though rather a cool wind. A letter came from Eliza this morning from Portland. Mother & I attended meeting at the Methodist House. Mr. Pendleton preached from Job 5:11. Quite a good number out. Wrote to uncle Samuel. Went to a prayer meeting at the F.W. Baptist house p.m. & to ours in the evening. Friday, April 16, 1869 I watched with Mrs. Dr. Cook last night & slept only about half an hour. I finished “Tried & True”. Got home about six o’cl’k. After

clearing away and going to the office, I called into Mrs. Pitman’s a few min. & then went up to Mrs. Walker’s as she sent for me and helped her until about three. Went home & got my library book & exchanged it. Called into Maria Greeley’s. Retired about eight – wrote to Sarah Condit. Saturday, April 17, 1869 Pleasant. I sewed some in the p.m. Called to see Mrs. Washburn & Miss Holmes. Fanny V. Mrs. Hall and into Mr. Mayo’s to see Lizzie & her children who came with their father about one o’cl’k. After tea I began to read aloud to father “Seventy Years” by Mrs. Farrar. Carrie & Hallie were here to tea. Sunday, April 18, 1869 Cloudy in the forenoon but pleasant when services closed p.m. I started for our church but Mr. Pitman was sick with a cold and we had no meeting or S. school. I heard Mr. Pendleton preach from Ge. 28:12 a.m. Mrs. Brown spent the noon here & I went with her to hear Mr. Marsh – Text Eccl. 7:2. Went to a prayer meeting at the F.W.B. church in the evening. Monday, April 19, 1869 Somewhat rainy. After washing we cleaned the dining room and closets. In the evening I read in “Seventy Years”. Tuesday, April 20, 1869 A very heavy fog, almost rain. I sewed the most of the day. After tea practised about a.m. hour, then called into Mrs. P’s and went after the milk & read on my return. Wednesday, April 21, 1869 Very rainy. We cleaned the medicine room & porch & mother cleaned the tins. In the evening read aloud to father in the Tribune & then read to myself in “Seventy Years” until past nine. Mr. Guerney preached from Rev. 10:5-6 a.m. & Is. 45:15 p.m. Monday, April 26, 1869 Pleasant & quite windy. After tea I went down to see lawyer Robinson about having a school in the Academy. Called on Mrs. Tower & the Sawyer’s. Retired about eight o’clock. I changed my book at the library this p.m. Stanley called to see me about teaching at Brownville. Tuesday, April 27, 1869 A beautiful day. I ironed and packed away winter garments a.m. P.M. I went down to Mrs. Brown’s to mark some clothing for her. Mr. Guerney & Mrs. Pitman called there. After tea I called at Mrs. Heath’s to see Ella and went from there to Mr. Chamberlains where I spent the evening with E. & L Pullen Orman & Mr. Souls. Got home about ½ past 11. Wednesday, April 28, 1869 Quite a summer like day. Mary Lizzie Thompson & her two boys spent the day here. After tea I carried some eatables over to Ella & called also on old lady Bragg & Mrs. Crocker & Mr. Mayo. I found Mrs. Brown here on my return. She left about nine & I retired.

Thursday, April 29, 1869 Pleasant but not quite as warm as yesterday. Father took a little cold. I sewed some in the forenoon and carried some hominy up to Mr. Mayo’s. Went to conference at two – we had a good meeting – Called at Mrs. Meder’s. Mrs. B. & Mrs. ___ called here. After tea practised a little. S. Gilman called & Augusta came for me to go to meeting with her. Friday, April 30, 1869 Pleasant but quite cool. P.M. I wrote to Frank – Addie R & Mrs. Dismore called. After tea S. A. Thompson called. I spent the evening at Mr. Pitmans and played dominoes &c. Saturday, May 1, 1869 Eliza came about twelve last night. Very pleasant the most of the day. Mrs. Washburn called. Mrs. Shepherd spent a part of the p.m. Mrs. Hewitt took tea here. I wrote to Althea. Mrs. Brown & Mr. Jenks of Brownville accepting the offer of the school. I sang with Eliza a little in the evening. Sunday, May 2, 1869 Cloudy and cold and hail p.m. Mr. Guerney preached from 2nd Kings 4:5 a.m. & Mathew 26:38. Monday, May 3, 1869 Quite rainy. I was busy sewing the most of the day. In the evening Eliza played and I sang a little. I wrote to Seth. Tuesday, May 4, 1869 Somewhat rainy but we washed and put the clothes in soak. I prepared work p.m. and sewed some in the evening. Four of my Sabbath school class came here at seven to rehearse the concert lesson, but we adjourned until the next evening. Wednesday, May 5, 1869 Sunshine and clouds alternately, but no rain of any consequence. I went to meeting at three o’cl’k and did several errands. In the evening Addie Sawyer came up here to learn how to make paper crosses &c and I

also learned. Seven of my class came at seven. Thursday, May 6, 1869 Quite pleasant and warmer. I went up to the shoe store and ironed and fitted some work a.m. P.M. I visited the Academy and in the evening I went to meeting. Mr. Mayo, Lizzie & the children called p.m. & Mrs. Brown in the evening. Mother went with Mrs. D. to Mrs. Houston’s after tea. Friday, May 7, 1869 I went up to have my picture taken about nine and then went into the Academy. Addie S. called for me to attend the closing exercises at the Academy in the p.m. We called on S. Abby and Lizzie Thompson. In the evening E & I were at Mrs. Pullen’s. We left a little past ten & went home with Mrs. D. Saturday, May 8, 1869 A charming day. E & I cleared up the front yard in the forenoon. Miss Holmes called p.m. I sewed on my green dress. Sunday, May 9, 1869 Quite pleasant though showery at night. Mr. Pitman read a sermon of Prof. Shepherd’s from Acts 27:22 & 31 a.m. Mother & I went to the Baptist church p.m. and heard elder Marsh preach from Ex. 24:18 & Ex 33:22. Monday, May 10, 1869 A pleasant summer-like day. I was busy washing &c a.m. P.M. I went up to the library & into some stores & sewed the rest of the p.m. Mrs. Pitman came in a little while in the evening. We had our blinds painted &c today. E. sent a box to Q. Thursday, May 13, 1869 A little showery, but mother & I worked in the garden until about three o’clock. In the evening I went up to meeting, but as there was none I came home & went to sewing. Friday, May 14, 1869 I worked in the garden from five to six and a part of the forenoon and we got it in quite good order before it began to rain. After tea I went up to Mrs. Brockway’s for the milk, down to the office and in to Mrs. Sawyer’s. Found Fannie Favor here & she stayed until half past nine. Saturday, May 15, 1869 Very rainy and I had no idea of going away but hearing that a man from B. was in town, I hurried & packed my trunk. After dinner I went up to Mrs. B’s shop & Mr. Dinsmore’s & in to Mr. Pitman’s. I sat up until past ten helping Eliza make paper crosses. Sunday, May 16, 1869 Showery. Mr. Pitman read a sermon from O Earth &c heap to word [?] after which we had a Sabbath school concert which would have been good if there had been more promptness. I heard elder Marsh’s farewell sermon from 1st Cor. 16:10 p.m. Attended the Methodist prayer meeting in evening. Monday, May 17, 1869 Somewhat rainy. I did my washing in the morning. Mary Lizzie & Johnny spent the p.m. with us. Mother & I called at Mrs. Douty’s in the evening. I wrote to Miss E. Bartlett. Tuesday, May 18, 1869 Quite pleasant. I sewed some in a.m. About eleven Mr. Jenks called and a little past one we started for Brownville and had quite a pleasant ride over going through Sebec village. I am to board at Mr. Nason’s & think that I shall like. Wednesday, May 19, 1869 Pleasant but cold. I began school with twenty-seven scholars and there were only five boys. When I came from school I called at Mrs.

Perham’s & after tea I went up to Mrs. F. Brown’s. I walked down with A.E. & V. to meeting which was well attended and closed about nine. Thursday, May 20, 1869 Somewhat rainy. I read awhile after tea and then went up to see Mattie and had a pleasant call. I finished reading “Helen Maurice” a S.S. book and then retired. I had three more scholars to-day. Friday, May 21, 1869 I wrote to Frank in the morning. Pleasant but a cool wind. I read some in the “Galaxy” before tea and afterward went into Mrs. Jenk’s room. Then we “ “ & I went down to the office & then I called at Mr. Sparrow’s. In the evening I began to read “Pictures from Italy” by Dickens. Saturday, May 22, 1869 Quite pleasant but cool. I read some before school. After dinner I analysed a flower called Uvalaria Sassifolio and looked over the Arithmetic for Monday & then about three I went up to Mr. Brown’s. Mrs. & Miss Page were there to tea. I returned before dark & went back to the office to see if my trunk had come, but it did not. I read in the evening. Sunday, May 23, 1869 I wrote home in the morning. I could not go to church as I had no hat to wear & besides I did not feel well enough. I read the “Mirror” and began “The I Wills of Christ” a.m. After lunch & seeing the people all in church I lay down an hour. After tea I wrote to Seth. At seven o’cl’k I went to hear Mr. Cran’s lecture on Temperance. Text 1st Cor. 6:10 & Prov. 20:1. Monday, May 24, 1869 Warmer but a little windy still until night. I had one new scholar. Carrie E. After I wrote to uncle Samuel & then Lizzie N. & I took a walk and called at Mr. McPherson’s, Mr. Pratt’s & Mr. M. Brown’s, but at the latter place we found no one at home. Also went into the office. read on my return until past nine in “Pictures from Italy”. L & I also called at Mr. G. Briggs. Tuesday, May 25, 1869 A warm summer-like day. Eliza Brown was here to tea after which she, Lizzie, Miss Swett & myself went up to Round hill through the woods, then E & I called at Mr. Cran’s and he & Mattie walked back with us and called in here. I walked home with E. & Abby came as far Mr. W’s with me. My trunk arrived to-night. Wednesday, May 26, 1869 A warm morning. A heavy shower just before noon with some thunder. Two or three showers with wind p.m. After school I called at Mrs. Perham’s and stopped until after a shower. Wrote in my record book & analysed a flower. I went to prayer-meeting with Lizzie. Cold towards night. Thursday, May 27, 1869 Cold. I sewed about an hour in Mrs. Jenk’s room before school. After tea I wrote to aunt Maria and carried my letter to the office. Then I went into Mrs. J’s room and stayed until about nine. I read a little and retired about ten. Friday, May 28, 1869 I sat in Mrs. J’s room and made tattin about an hour before school. Mrs. D. Wilkins took dinner here. After tea I wrote copies in writing books and then Lizzie & I called at Mr. Page’s and Mr. Morrill’s – and then went into the Swett girls shop and into Mrs. Perham’s. It was a little past nine when we got home. Saturday, May 29, 1869 Warmer. It looked like rain in the morning, but cleared off at noon. I went up to Mrs. Brown’s about three o’cl’k. Lizzie went with me as far as Mr. Jenks and I called there. After Abby Sook, Miss Smith & I all over the house &c. I called into the shop and found Lizzie and she home with me about eight & read in “The I Wills &c” until past nine.

Sunday, May 30, 1869 A charming day. Lizzie took a walk in the graveyard after breakfast. Mr. Cran preached from Math 6:19 & Mark 12:43. Mr. C. preached out of the village in p.m. so Mr. Johnson read a sermon from Colassians 1:20. I attended a very interesting prayer meeting at half past five. I read some and then talked with Mr & Mrs. J. in their room. Monday, May 31, 1869 Somewhat rainy. I washed before school. After tea Lizzie and I called at Mrs. M. Brown’s & at the shop & also went into the store where Fred Morrill tends to get some elastic. I had one new scholar. Tuesday, June 1, 1869 Rain in the night and a very heavy shower in the morning. At noon it cleared off finely. I heard Lizzie & Carrie E. recite their first lesson in French at half past eight a.m. After school Lizzie & I went to the circle at Mrs. M. Brown’s. I paid twelve cts. & joined. I went home with Mattie Cran to stay all night. Wednesday, June 2, 1869 A charming morning. I left Mattie’s about eight. After tea I wrote to Althea & Frank & went to meeting with Lizzie. I had two new scholars to-day and got along pleasantly although I felt quite tired after school. Thursday, June 3, 1869 A warm day although there was a good breeze which made it very comfortable. I ironed and read some in Virgil before school. At noon I analysed three flowers. After tea I sewed in Mrs. J’s room and Miss J. Powers, Mrs. M. Brown & Nora and Mr. Cran. I rem’d in that room with the rest of the family until nine o’cl’k. Friday, June 4, 1869 A lovely morning. About eight o’cl’k, Lizzie, Maria & I went to ride about two miles & got back just at nine. After tea I sewed a little & then Lizzie & I went up to Abby Brown’s & had a treat of cold greens. Read a little on my return.

Saturday, June 5, 1869 A heavy mist all day. I wrote copies in the morning after sweeping & dusting my room & began a letter to Venah W. After dinner I finished & wrote to aunt Maggie. Then I went to the church meeting and sewed a little. About six L & I went out & called on Mrs. Billings & Mrs. Dunn & at the shop. Read in my S. S. Book until past nine. Sunday, June 6, 1869 Quite a cool morning but a charming day. Mr. Cran preached from Rev 5:12. A precious communion season immediately after. Addie Morrill Carrie Emery & Helen W. united with the church. Sermon in p.m. from 2nd Peter 2:17. Finished reading my S.S. book “The Village School Mistress”. Attended prayer-meeting at half past five. L & I walked home with E & G Brown & stopped a few minutes. Monday, June 7, 1869 Pleasant but cool. I washed and looked over the N. Arithmetic lesson. At noon analysed a flower. After tea I sewed a while & then called up to Mattie Cran’s. Read a little in “Cricket on the Hearth”. Tuesday, June 8, 1869 Pleasant and not so windy but cool still. I sewed some in the morning. At noon I heard L & C recite in French. All went to the lodge in the evening except little Marie and I, and they did not return until quarter of eleven. I talked with & sang to M. until half past nine and then sewed. Wednesday, June 9, 1869 Still cool. I began a letter to Frank in the morning after looking over my lessons. The two committee men & Mr. Wm Knowlton visited my school about an hour the last of the forenoon. After school at night heard the French class and after tea Lizzie & I rode down to Mr. Johnson’s and made a call. I went to meeting with L & Emma. Finished my letter & sent it to the office.

Thursday, June 10, 1869 Pleasant and a littler warmer. I studied & sewed a little in the morning. After school I went home with Lizzie, Jennie Morrill & came back about eight. Lizzie & I went down to the store & called into the shop & stayed until nine o’clock. Retired about ten. Received a letter from aunt Maria. Friday, June 11, 1869 Pleasant, but quite cool towards night. I sewed after tea awhile and then Lizzie & I went up to Abby Brown’s & stayed until past nine. Saturday, June 12, 1869 It rained hard early in the morning, but cleared off finely. I swept a part of the school-room after school and about two o’cl’k I went up to Mr. B’s and found Eliza & Lucy there. L. took tea at her aunt’s & Eliza & I went to meet her. Sunday, June 13, 1869 A perfect morning. I looked over Abby’s S.S. lesson with her & read some before church. We all went – I took a class in S.S. school. Mr. C. preached from Math. 20:26:27 &c a.m. & Mark 10:51. I went home with Mrs. B. after meeting. Abby & Lucy went to the evening meeting after which Mr. Morrill & wife & three children & Nora called. Abby went away to watch & I came home in company with her about nine. Monday, June 14, 1869 Lizzie Nason left about six for Garland & Lucy & Eliza left Mrs. B’s before that time. About half past nine it rained very hard & rained some all day. After tea I sewed a little and read in the evening. This is father’s birth-day. He is sixty-seven years old. Tuesday, June 15, 1869 Still unpleasant and at night there was a heavy shower. After tea I went down to the office and called in to see Mrs. Wilkins and stayed until nearly nine. I sat up with Emma until past ten waiting for Mr. & Mrs. Nason who had gone to the lodge.

Wednesday, June 16, 1869 Quite pleasant but cool. Eliza Brown spent the day here. I sewed after school until almost dark & then Eliza, Ellen & I went to meeting and we had a very good one although there were not as many there as usual. Thursday, June 17, 1869 Lizzie came about eleven o’cl’k last night. After school I read until nearly dark & then in the evening. After Lizzie got home from down street about half past nine she came into my room and we talked until twenty minutes of eleven. Friday, June 18, 1869 Somewhat rainy. After tea Lizzie & I called up to Mr. Rider’s about a mile distant & found nearly all sick with the measles. On our way back we called into Abby Brown’s & Mr. Moses Brown’s & had very pleasant calls. & also went into the Swett girls shop a few minutes and it was nearly ten when we got home. It rained a little the most of the time that we were out. Saturday, June 19, 1869 Cloudy & cool. After school I swept the school-room and after dinner I attended to miscellaneous matters & read some & then took my work into Mrs. J’s room with Mrs. N. I read some after tea and then L & I called at Mr. Powers, but Lizzie was away. Then I called at Mr. McP’s, Mrs. Jenk’s & the shop. Then took a walk with Addie Morrill & back to the shop again. Got home ½ past eight & read until ½ past nine. Sunday, June 20, 1869 Comfortably warm but the sun shone only in the morning. Quite a shower just as meeting closed in p.m. Mr. Cran was away and Mr. Johnson read two of Spurgin’s sermons. The texts were Zephaniah 3:17 & Romans 12:1st. No meeting at night. I read my S. school book entitled “Up Hill” which was quite good. Monday, June 21, 1869 Cloudy but no rain and it cleared off beautifully towards sunset. After doing my washing I wrote to Seth.

After tea I wrote to Eliza and then went down to the office and called on Carrie Emery & Angie Pratt. In the evening I read an account of the opening exercises of the “Peace Jubilee”. Retired about half past ten. Tuesday, June 22, 1869 A little rain today contrary to our expectations last night. Before school I wrote to Althea. At noon I heard Lizzie recite in French. After tea until ten o’clock I sewed in Mrs. Jenks’ room. Wednesday, June 23, 1869 Cloudy but not much rain. In the morning I ironed and studied. After school Lizzie & I went down to Mrs. Page’s and stayed until nearly nine. I received a letter from Mrs. Goodwin to-night. Thursday, June 24, 1869 Quite a summer-like day, but quite windy. I was awaked by mosquitoes about half past four & got up & wrote a letter to Lucy Goodwin before breakfast. Afterward Lizzie brought her work into my room & we sewed until school time & I learned a new kind of tatin. After school I went home with Delia Stone & called at Mr. Glidden’s. Read a little in the evening – Retired past ten. Friday, June 25, 1869 A pleasant day. After school I disciplined one of my scholars before going home. Then I went into Mr. Pratt’s to tea with Lizzie & M. Smith. We went home about dark and I read until nearly ten. Saturday, June 26, 1869 Pleasant. After dinner I read until three o’clock & then went up to Mr. Brown’s. I made a straw frame for her. After tea Eliza & I went up on the high hill above there & had a nice walk. I looked over their S. school lessons in the evening. Retired past ten. Sunday, June 27, 1869 A charming morning. I came home about ½ past eight and found a letter from aunt Almira & one from Eliza. Mr. Cran preached from Job 4:4-5

a.m. Phil 1:6 p.m. I had some cramp in my stomach but felt better at night. Went to prayer meeting at ½ past five. I read “Opposite a Jail” to-day. Monday, June 28, 1869 Quite pleasant during the day but rainy towards night. I sewed for L. on her dress after tea & heard her French lesson and then we sat & talked in the dark until nearly ten. It rained hard all the evening. I finished reading the “Guardian Angel” by O.W. Holmes today. Tuesday, June 29, 1869 Very pleasant and warmer. I studied an hour in the morning. After tea sewed a little & then I went to the store with Lizzie & bought a half dozen apples. Got a letter from Frank. Went up to see Mattie & came down with her and Nellie P. & Ander to Mrs. Parhams where I stayed until nine o’cl’k. Came home & sewed a little sitting up with E. & M. until Mrs. N returned. Wednesday, June 30, 1869 Very rainy in a.m. It cleared off pleasant but windy, about six. I ironed in the morning & did not have much time for study. I finished hemming the ruffle for L’s dress & then wrote to Frank after tea. I heard Lizzie’s French lesson and then we went to meeting. Thursday, July 1, 1869 Pleasant but windy. I was busy stoning raisins the most of the time before school. At noon wiped the dishes and after tea wrote to Father & then for Lizzie a little. Then we went to the office & the shop & returned about nine. Cold to-night & cloudy. Friday, July 2, 1869 A warm day. I studied a little while in the morning. Marie J. fixed my bonnet for me at noon. After tea I finished hemming Lizzie’s ruffle for her. Cal. Jenks L & I went down street with her & we called over to Mrs. M. Brown’s & then into the shop where we stayed until about ten.

Saturday, July 3, 1869 A warm morning. P.M. I wrote a letter to grand mother and after the conference I went home with Eliza Brown to stay all night. I had a small school today. Sunday, July 4, 1869 Very warm although there was a little breeze. I studied Abby’s lessons with her & came down home about half past nine. Mr. Cran preached a.m. from Luke 2:14 & Psalm 72:3 p.m. Mr. Jackson of Gorham preached from 2nd Cor 4:18. Read in the “I Wills of Christ”. Went to prayer meeting at ½ past five. We sat out on the door step until nearly dark. Lizzie & I took a little walk. Monday, July 5, 1869 A great change in the weather last night about ten o’clock. The wind blew up very cool. About nine I went down to the Hall with L. and assisted a little trimming cake &c. About eleven I went into the church with Mattie C to hear the oration &c & walk down to the table with her. I saw Dr. & Mrs. Thompson & Sophie Parker. Came home about three and had a treat of strawberries & lemonade. Tuesday, July 6, 1869 A fine day. I studied some in the morning. Sewed some after tea and then went down street with Lizzie. We called at Mrs. Brigg’s and then went into the shop and stayed until nearly half past nine. I received a letter from Frank to-night. Wednesday, July 7, 1869 A comfortable day. Cloudy to-night. I washed & studied in the morning. At noon read a little in the Atlantic Monthly. After tea sewed a little then went up to see Mattie and from there went to meeting. Received a letter from Eliza to-day. Thursday, July 8, 1869 Quite warm. I arose at quarter past five. E. K. M. & H. started for Blanchard about ½ past five. Before school I worked some button holes &c for Emma. After school L. & I went up to Mr. Glidden’s to tea and

got home about eight as it was beginning to rain. I sewed in the evening until ten. M. Smith was in here to stay all night. Friday, July 9, 1869 Somewhat rainy especially at night. In the morning after sweeping & dusting my room I studied nearly an hour. After tea Lizzie came into my room to recite French and Ellen & Marie also came and chatted awhile. Mr. & Mrs. Jenks were up here a little while. After dark I read a sermon on Woman’s rights by [blank] & then finished a letter to Ellen Jackson. Saturday, July 10, 1869 A fine day. Quite warm but a nice breeze. I sewed in the morning. About two p.m. Lizzie & I walked up to Mr. Gould’s about a mile distant up hill, calling at Mr. Lord’s on the way. We had a nice feast on strawberries. After tea we went out into the field where we had a fine view. M. Smith & I walked home & Lizzie rode with Mrs. G. I read in “Children of Cloverly” in the evening. Sunday, July 11, 1869 Very warm but a refreshing breeze. after studying my lesson &c I read in the “I Wills of Christ” until meeting time. Mrs. Cran preached from John 6:17 a.m. & Acts 20:7 – Rev 1:10 p.m. Read in “Children of Cloverly” until half past nine. Monday, July 12, 1869 The air clear and cool & quite windy. After washing I sewed until school time. After tea Mrs. Perham called. I heard Lizzie’s French lesson and wrote home and then L. & I went down to the office. I called into the shop while Lizzie made a call. I helped them hull some strawberries. It was half past nine when we got home. I rec’d a letter from Aunt Maggie with unpleasant news about Seth. Tuesday, July 13, 1869 A fine day. In the morning I studied. After supper hulled strawberries until half past eight. C. Jenks called.

Wednesday, July 14, 1869 Quite warm. Mrs. M. Brown & Nora spent the day here. In the morning I ripped my gingham dress skirt & then studied until school time. I went to meeting with C. Jenks & went home with Abby Brown. Thursday, July 15, 1869 Came home a little past seven & did my ironing & studied a little before school. At noon I heard L. recite in French. After tea sewed a little. In the evening read the account of the last three days of the “Jubilee” and then began the S. S. book entitled “Hopes of Hopes Castle”. Rainy after ten o’clock a.m. Friday, July 16, 1869 Studied before school. At noon and a part of the p.m. it rained hard, but cleared off finely so that Lizzie and I went home with Annie Merrill after school. Returned about eight. I read some in the “Atlantic Monthly” in evening & retired about ten. Saturday, July 17, 1869 Arose at quarter before five. Studied before school. About quarter past two called for Lizzie at the shop & then we went over to Mr. Jenk’s to spend the p.m. and had a pleasant visit. I rode home with Mrs. N. & Marie. In the evening read in “Times of Knox & Mary Stuart.” Mat Smith came over about nine to stay all night. Sunday, July 18, 1869 A fine day but a very strong breeze. Not feeling well. I did not go to church until afternoon. Mr. Cran preached from Math 11:28-30. I finished “Hopes of Hope Castle” or “Times of Knox &c”. After evening meeting I took a walk with Fanny & Sarah Swett, then went home with them and stayed until about nine o’clock. Monday, July 19, 1869 Quite a warm day. Fred Cran was in school all of the forenoon. After school I heard Lizzie’s lesson & after tea I ironed the breadths of my gingham dress. F & S Swett called with Lizzie and I went down with

After school Lizzie & I went up to Mr. Rider’s & took tea. We called at the two Mr. Brown’s and the shop on our way home. Wednesday, July 21, 1869 It began to rain about three o’cl’k. Frank called at my school-room door about eleven & then at noon & I walked up to Mr. Brown’s with him. Mother came over with him. We all went up on the hill, but could not stop as it began to rain. Thursday, July 22, 1869 I stayed all night with mother & Frank brought me down here about seven. I found a letter from Althea here. After tea I sat down stairs & sewed. C. Jenks was here & Mrs. Perham & Mrs. G. Wilkins called. L & I went home with C. Jenks and then went into the shop for awhile. Friday, July 23, 1869 There was a very heavy shower at noon & more the first of the afternoon but it cleared off beautifully. After school C. Emery came to see about her French lesson. After tea I nearly finished my gingham dress. I read a little in evening but was so sleepy that I retired about nine. Saturday, July 24, 1869 I studied &c in the morning. At noon I heard L’s French lesson and kept school in the afternoon. After tea I wrote to Seth & called up to see Mattie & walked down with her another way to the lodge. I went into Mrs. Pratt’s a little while and read some after nine o’clock. Sunday, July 25, 1869 Quite warm but a cool breeze. Mr. Cran preached from Luke 15:13 a.m. & Matthew 14:31. Went to prayer meeting at half past five and then walked up the road a little way with Mrs. N. and little Marie and afterward called over with Lizzie to bid Nora B. good bye.

Monday, July 26, 1869 Pleasant & very warm. At night sewed a little worked on worsted work & then called into Mrs. Butler. I heard L’s French lesson after nine o’clock. Called into Mrs. Pratt & had some ice-cream. Rec’d a letter from cousin Hattie. Tuesday, July 27, 1869 Foggy the most of the a.m. A heavy shower about five o’cl’k. I worked on my worsted work until nearly dark. Ellen & Lizzie went to the circle. Wednesday, July 28, 1869 Pleasant. After Marie & I went with H. about a mile away and got four qts. of strawberries. Went to meeting in the evening. Thursday, July 29, 1869 A heavy shower about noon. After school Lizzie & I went up to Mattie C’s to stay all night & had a pleasant time. I began to read “Gates Ajar”. Friday, July 30, 1869 A fine day. After school S & I went to Mrs. Perham’s and stopped until nine o’clock. Read until ten. Saturday, July 31, 1869 Finished “Gates Ajar” this morning and then swept my room and looked the Arithmetic lessons until school. In afternoon I wrote in my school register and finished some worsted work and after tea went up to Mrs. Brown’s and found Velina quite sick. Called into the shop and at Mr. M. Brown’s on my way up. Sunday, August 1, 1869 A beautiful day. I came down from Mr. Brown’s about nine o’cl’k. Mr. C. preached from Prov. 10:5 a.m. & Psalm 143:5. Read “Calm Rock”. Went to prayer meeting at half past five. Lizzie’s sister Hannah and her husband came last night from the West. Monday, August 2, 1869 Cloudy in morning but no rain and a comfortable day. At noon and after school I wrote to M. Hattie and Althea. After tea I called at Mrs.

Briggs and Mrs. Witney’s and then went down to Mrs. Dunning’s new house with Mrs. D. Ellen and Lizzie. On our return all the family were in the sitting room together until about nine after which L & I read until about ten. Tuesday, August 3, 1869 Showery. I analysed a flower & studied until school. At noon I heard L’s lesson and after tea wrote to uncle H. Went with the Swett girls & Mattie C. who were going by, as far as Mrs. Perham’s. I stopped in there a few minutes and then came home & read in “After Years” the sequel to “Calm Rock until half past nine. Lizzie went up to Mrs. Goulds. Wednesday, August 4, 1869 Pleasant and cool. Studied in the morning. After school L. & I went up to Mr. Lord’s to tea. Mrs. L & Ella came down to meeting with. I finished “After Years” after meeting. Thursday, August 5, 1869 Quite cold out of the sun. I ironed and wrote in the morning. After school I finished a letter to aunt Almira and went down to the office and into the shop to bid the girls good by. Friday, August 6, 1869 Still cool. I wrote to Eliza & cousin Laura A. and read in the evening. Saturday, August 7, 1869 A heavy shower at noon. About three I started for Mrs. Brown’s and called at Mrs. Smith’s on my way. After tea I studied Eliza’s S.S. lesson with her and then took a walk with the girls and were caught in a shower on our way home. I sat in Mrs. Mory’s room and had a nice chat for an hour & then studied with Eliza. Sunday, August 8, 1869 A fine day, but cool. I made Mrs. Mory a short call. Came down home about ten. Mr. Cran preached from Luke 2:40 a.m. – Ex 25:40 p.m. Attended a good prayer-meeting at half past five and walked down as far as the bridge with Eliza B.

Monday, August 9, 1869 Quite pleasant in the morning. I packed my trunk and it was carried home on a train. After school Lizzie & I went down to Mrs. Page’s and Ellen & Hannah were there. On our way home L & I met Emma & we went over to Mrs. Jenks with her on an errand. Found Mat. Smith & Clara P. when I returned waiting to see me. C & I walked home with Mat. Tuesday, August 10, 1869 Pleasant. Mr. H. Nason visited my school a.m. but was in only a short time as I fainted away & had to go home about recess time. Kept school a part of the p.m. and closed finally ½ past three. I rode up to Matties to the circle and a cup of tea so benefitted my head that I went into the quarry. L & I went up to Mr. B’s for my order. Wednesday, August 11, 1869 Last night on my return I finished my register. I arose about five and left in the stage about ½ past six. I met Eliza & Quincy at Chase’s corner and had a nice ride home. About noon Asa brought cousin Samuel & Hattie. On the afternoon we played “Jack straws”, “Great Events” and Croquet. At evening devotions led by S. he repeated “The Old Old Story”. Thursday, August 12, 1869 Mrs. Cook died this morning. After breakfast & prayers, Hattie & I took S. down to S. Dover to meet Asa & family to go to Jackson. Hattie & I went up street shopping after dinner & then played croquet. Just at tea time uncle S. & family came. After tea H. & I rode up to Mr. Hammond’s to carry a note for E. Mrs. Washburn called. We (N.Q.E & I) chatted until past ten. Friday, August 13, 1869 Hattie & I went up to A. Meder’s shop to see him and she got her pin mended. They all left for Jackson about ten. In afternoon I called on Bradicea & Mrs. Crocker and then played croquet. After tea Addie Sawyer called. In evening E & I

chatted with Q. until nearly ten o’cl’k. Saturday, August 14, 1869 Pleasant, but quite windy and the streets very dusty. About three o’cl’k I went to ride with Q. and returned about five. I called at Mrs. Jackson’s. After tea we played two games of croquet. I talked with father until he went to bed and then went into the parlor to chat with the others. Sunday, August 15, 1869 Cloudy but no rain. Mr. Gurney preached from Malachi 3:6 a.m. & Genesis 32:26 p.m. Prayer meeting at p.m. mother & I got a ride home as it rained a little. We had supper on our return. Eliza & I sang a little while & then I read aloud a part of one of Spurgeon’s sermons. Monday, August 16, 1869 Pleasant. I was busy about house during the forenoon & P.m. went about to solicit funds for the support of a teacher among the freedmen. After tea I called at Mr. Mayo’s to see Miss Gurney, at Delia M’s and at Mrs. Thompson’s to see their cousins from Hartford. Tuesday, August 17, 1869 Cloudy and cool. P.M. Mrs. McKusick was here to cut a dress for mother and I sewed. After tea Quincy & I picked some peas on the hill. I wrote to Seth & carried the letter to the office. In the evening Q. & I read and critized until nearly ten. Rec’d a letter from Althea. Wednesday, August 18, 1869 A very little rain a.m. but pleasant in the p.m. I ironed in the a.m. and made button holes on mother’s dress p.m. Received a letter from Seth. Thursday, August 19, 1869 I played croquet with mother, E & Q after tea and then Q & I called at Mr. Longer’s and stayed until nine o’clock, E calling for us on her way home from a call in Foxcroft. Friday, August 20, 1869 Rain in the night and a little this morning. Very sultry in the p.m. I

passed the afternoon with the Jackson girls & Fannie V. & Addie S. at Mrs. Crockers. After tea we went to the top of the new hotel & there we had a fine view of the place. Came home about eight and worked a little on my cushion. Saturday, August 21, 1869 A beautiful, clear day. About five o’clock I went by invitation to Mr. Sawyer’s to tea and had a pleasant time, playing croquet &c. About eight we all went up to the rehearsal at the church & from there we went into Mr. Thompson’s to hear Mr & Mrs. Dinsmore sing a little. Ellen J. came home with me. Sunday, August 22, 1869 A fine day. Mr. Gurney preached from Gen 1:3 a.m. Isaiah p.m. Called in to see Augusta Shepherd who has some fine on my way home. I went to meeting at ½ past five. Delia & John called. E & I sang some in the evening. Monday, August 23, 1869 Pleasant & quite warm. As soon as I finished my work I rode up to Lizzie Greeley’s to pass the p.m. Towards night L & I called on Miss Whittier, & on Bordin to bid her & her husband good bye and also into Mrs. Crocker’s for a few minutes. Tuesday, August 24, 1869 Pleasant. Miss Gurney called p.m. After tea Carl Bragg called, Ellen Sawyer & her two cousins, Mr & Mrs. Crosby and also Mrs. Brown. Mother & I went home with her to get some yeast and we all soon retired. Hattie Thorndike & Mrs. D. Brown also called p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 1869 We have had some fine refreshing showers to-day. Saturday, August 28, 1869 About three o’clock Quincy called me up to Mr. McKusick’s where I called and then went into Mr. Jacksons and stayed until nearly dark. Fannie N. and S. Abby were there also. Elmer brought A & I home in a pouring rain about dark. Eliza was soon after taken with a severe tooth ache and Frank Q. had a bleeding turn. I retired about eleven. Sunday, August 29, 1869 Pleasant and warmer. Mr. Gurney preached from Prov. 4:23 a.m. I could not very well go to church any more today. I arose about one a.m. & sat up the rest of the night with Q. who had to keep very quiet. Father is quite miserable. I wrote to mother. Monday, August 30, 1869 Pleasant but windy. I did not rise until about six. E & I did quite a washing. She dined at Mr. Mayo’s. Tina & Sallie Crocker called. After tea I dressed a chicken for father who has no appetite and is miserable. I wrote a letter for Quincy and carried it to the office & went into Mr. S’s to get a book. Tuesday, August 31, 1869 I was busy about different things nearly all day. A.M. I went down to Mrs. Brown’s & the office & up to Kittredge’s for some chloroform for Eliza. Her tooth was very much relieved soon after dinner. I wrote to Seth but did not get it into the office in season. Miss Holmes & her brother called in the evening. Wednesday, September 1, 1869 [blank] Thursday, September 2, 1869 In the evening Frank Q. had an attack of hemorrhage & we made up a bed on the sofa for him. E. sat up until two & then ________. Addie Sawyer & Lucy R. were in in the evening & we laughed considerably which was bad for Q.

Friday, September 3, 1869 Eliza sat up until two o’clock and then I got up but slept some on the lounge. I arose about six and left Frank for a few moments asleep – but while I was out he had another attack which weakened him very much. Saturday, September 4, 1869 Pensioners were flocking in all day & Frank got very tired & father was hardly able to attend to them & I had to assist him. Sunday, September 5, 1869 Mr. Pitman read one of Dr. Hitchcock’s sermons from Isaiah 64:6. I did not go out again for the day. Miss Holmes made a long call after the afternoon service which Q. enjoyed although he felt tired afterward. Monday, September 6, 1869 Pleasant. F & E. went to ride a little while in the forenoon. Quincy arrived in town last night & called here about seven a.m. & also two – three other times & left town about ten. Eliza & Frank started ½ past eleven & E. returned about five & F. went to Waterville. Nathan & Cynthia & the baby came about ten. Cy. left before five & Nathan stopped to court. Father not as well. Miss N. called to bid F. good-bye. Wednesday, September 15,1869 Father is rather feebler to-day. I preserved some peaches a.m. E was busy giving lessons nearly all day. A letter came from Frank this morning. Miss H. called after school. Thursday, September 16, 1869 Warm. E & I did a large ironing. I finished preserving peaches & picked currants & peas & weeded a little in the garden. Mr. Bragg, Addie S. called. Father is a little more comfortable to-day. Was abed nearly all of the p.m. & slept. I went up to meeting in evening & wrote to Althea on my return. Friday, September 17, 1869 Father is quite as feeble as yesterday. Cooker, the sun not being out much of the time. On the forenoon I cleared up the cellar & work about an hour in the garden with E. Dined at one. About four I went into the garden again & worked with E until nearly six. Nathan began to pick the crab apples. Mr. Mayo called in the evening. I knit a little & N & I sang a few tunes. Saturday, September 18, 1869 Unpleasant and a very little rainy. Nathan left about four. In the evening S. Gilman, & Anna Treat & her sister called, Eliza & I sang to father a little.

Sunday, September 19, 1869 Miss H & J & H & Mrs. B called in evening. A very little rain in the morning & p.m. but quite a nice day on the whole. Father had a comfortable night but Eliza was sick. I did not feel very well but went to church. Mr. Pendleton preached a.m. from Ps. 122:1 & Mr. Gurney p.m. 1st Sam. 8:7-8. I called in to see Augusta S. Monday, September 20, 1869 Father quite as comfortable. I was busy until nearly five. Mrs. wyman called. I sent a letter to M. Hattie. Mrs. Shepherd called. Tuesday, September 21, 1869 We ironed in forenoon. After dinner I went up to Mrs. Campbell’s to get some butter, but went in vain. Mr. Gurney called to see father. Carl Bragg called, Mrs. Vaughn, E & I sat up until after eleven some expecting mother. Wednesday, September 22, 1869 Damp & cloudy. Mrs. S. came in a few minutes in morning. Father rec’d a valuable letter from Seth this morning. Father had a very comfortable night. Mother arrived about half past ten. Thursday, September 23, 1869 A charming day. I sewed some & began to make preparations for going to Scarboro. Mrs. Douty called. E & I went into Mrs. Pitmans & I carried in a pin cushion as a bridal present for A. We went into Mrs. L’s. I called at Mrs. C’s on my way to meeting, only a few present. Friday, September 24, 1869 Still pleasant. I was busy sewing the most of the day. Did a little shopping at night. Saturday, September 25, 1869 Mrs. McKusick worked for me in the p.m. & Eliza & I walked part way home with her in the evening. Sat up until ten. Sunday, September 26, 1869 Mr. Gurney preached from 2nd Cor. 4:18 a.m. & 1st Chron. 13:10 p.m. Prayer meeting at five o’cl’k.

Cloudy. Mother & E went down to Mrs. B’s & Miss Holmes called in the evening. Monday, September 27, 1869 A severe rain storm which I enjoyed very much. I was busy sewing all day. Tuesday, September 28, 1869 I washed & ironed & pack my trunk &c. Mrs. Doughty, Ellen & Addie S., Mr. & Mrs. P. called. I went out after tea & called at Mrs. Crockers, Miss Holmes, Mr. Mayo’s &c. I did not lie down until past eleven. Pleasant but windy. Finished some writing for father. Wednesday, September 29, 1869 I slept some on the lounge. Arose about three & started in the stage about five & arrived in P. about two. Met Ellen in Thursday, September 30, 1869 Carrie & I called on Frank Q. about ten o’clock. Friday, October 1, 1869 Miss Pickering called for me to go visit her school and I had a pleasant time. Saturday, October 2, 1869 Pleasant. I sewed busily all of the forenoon, then Carrie went out shopping with me a little and then we hurried down to the depot and just got on the train. From the other depot C & I went up to call on aunt H. Left at three and uncle S. met me at the W. Scarboro depot. I sewed some on my dress that p.m. Sunday, October 3, 1869 Mr. Mason preached from John 9:25 a.m. There was quite a shower on our way home from church and it continued to rain all the p.m. and only uncle Seth went out to church. I read the Mirror & then began “Thoughts in my Garden” a Swedenborgian book. I went to S. School a half past nine with uncle S. & heard a class of boys. Monday, October 4, 1869 It rained the most of the day severely. About three uncle S. & I

started for Gorham to attend the institute. I was assigned a room with Miss Baker of Standish. In the evening there was a discussion upon school government and then a lecture by Dr. True upon Geology. Retired about ten. Tuesday, October 5, 1869 Quite pleasant but cold. I went out to walk with Miss B. before school. Lectures by Prof. C. on language & Dr. Tane on Spelling a.m. by Prof C. on Science of Teaching & Arithmetic. Prof Mason on Vocal Music & Prof Stone on History. We went to Maj. Robie’s to board after school. Discussion in evening on whispering & Lecture by Prof C. on Human Knowledge. Wednesday, October 6, 1869 Pleasant & cool. Carrie Jackson came out to the institute in p.m. Discussion on whispering continued and a lecture by Dr. Mayberry of Mass entitled “Poetry as an Educator”. Thursday, October 7, 1869 Pleasant & warmer. Ellen J. came out with Miss Pickering in p.m. & Mr & Mrs. W. Johnson also were present & I had the pleasure of meeting them. Mr. Johnson made some interesting remarks in the evening. Friday, October 8, 1869 A fine day. I took a walk at noon with a teacher from Westbrook. After institute I walked with Mary Mitchel to her boarding place & then took a walk to “fairy glen” with two other teachers. Discussion in evening on qualifications &c of teachers after which I went in to P. with the teachers from there & stopped with the Jackson girls. Saturday, October 9, 1869 About ten I went up to aunt H’s and found E. there. About three E & I went to the Jackson girls rooms & into some stores & then called on Frank Q & E. stopped there. I went out to Scarboro in the five o’cl’k train & found uncle S. waiting for me.

Sunday, October 10, 1869 Cloudy a.m. but the sun came out for a little while p.m. Mr. Mason preached from Prov 16:32 a.m. & John 4:24 p.m. There was no meeting in the evening. Monday, October 11, 1869 Aunt Olive S. came. A severe rain & wind in the night but it abated in the morning and the sun came out during the forenoon. I began school to-day with thirty nine scholars. After school I studied a little and then sat with aunt S. who was abed in her room a little while. After tea went with Howard to get my certificate but did not. Tuesday, October 12, 1869 Pleasant. I had four more scholars. Eliza came about six. I wrote to Althea in the evening after the others retired. My thirty second birthday. Wednesday, October 13, 1869 Very windy & rainy the most of the day. Susie & I stayed at noon. Howard carried us up and brought us back. One new scholar. Thursday, October 14, 1869 Quite pleasant but cool. After school I heard E’s first lesson in French and in the evening I, E & S. recite in history. I read in my “Teacher” sometime. I rec’d a letter from Seth today containing a check for twenty-five dollars as a birthday present. Friday, October 15, 1869 Rainy. Howard came after us at noon and carried us back. Aunt Olive went home. I heard E. in French after school & heard L. in history & assisted susie in Algebra & Arith. Read in my “Teacher”. Retired about ten. Began a letter to Seth. Saturday, October 16, 1869 Very rainy. A.M. I made some button holes &c on E’s dress, & sewed some for myself. By the advice of aunt S. & the rest E. decided to go to Boston the first of next week, much to my disappointment. Uncle S. came about five o’cl’k. I mended stockings & read a little in evening &

finished Seth’s letter after going up stairs. Sunday, October 17, 1869 A fine day which I can appreciate after having so much rain. The Sabbath school closed this morning. I had my class of boys. Mr. Mason preached from 1 Cor. 6:3 a.m. Monday, October 18, 1869 Pleasant but windy & cool. I had three new scholars. Eliza and Lillie went to Saco. They recited a lesson in history in evening. Tuesday, October 19, 1869 Pleasant. Eliza left about half past eight for Boston. Susie was away in the evening and I wrote copies in writing books & made measures for drawing maps. I began a letter home. Wednesday, October 20, 1869 I finished my letter this morning & sent it. I rec’d a letter from Seth saying that he had been sent for to come home. I fear that father is very feeble. I heard Lillie recite in history & helped Susie &c. Thursday, October 21, 1869 Quite pleasant. About half past five a.m. I was awakened by a slight shock of earthquake. Lillie went to Saco and so she didn’t recite in history & I wrote to Seth & Frank. Retired past ten. Friday, October 22, 1869 Somewhat rainy in the morning, but it cleared off beautifully. Aunt Susan felt some better and walked about some. After school I received a letter from uncle Mayo requesting me to come home immediately on account of father. Ten members of the choir came & we had a sing in the evening. Saturday, October 23, 1869 I packed my trunk, mended a dress & received a call from one of the school committee who gave me a certificate with an examination. Howard took me to the depot at noon. I found aunt Mary in the cars & had her company all of the way. We met uncle Kent at the depot.

Arrived home about eleven and found father more comfortable than I feared. Very rainy in evening. Sunday, October 24, 1869 It cleared off quite pleasant. Father suffered considerably today but saw quite a number who called. He was wandering in mind for sometime but his mind was clear in regard to religious things. He gave a good many messages in the evening. I did not go out to church. Monday, October 25, 1869 Pleasant & cold. I was busy about house nearly all day. Mrs. McKusick came in the morning and stayed until after dinner. E. Mayo & Mrs. Brown & Mrs. Shepherd called. Mrs. B took up mother’s gladiolas. I rec’d a letter from Althea and wrote to Eliza. I am to sit up with Mrs Sampson & Seth. Tuesday, October 26, 1869 Pleasant but cold. Father had quite a comfortable night. I slept about an hour. Mrs. McKusick came about seven & stayed all day. E. Mayo spent the most of the day here at work. Mr & Mrs McKusick & Mr. Foss are to watch here to-night. Wednesday, October 27, 1869 Father suffered a great deal with his right side. He was exhausted by exertion in evening and was unconscious for more than a half an hour. Stanly & Mrs. D. called. F. went down & got Ellen S, Fanny L. & Delia B. to come in and sing. Eliza came in the stage. We retired past twelve. E. Mayo was here awhile in the forenoon. Thursday, October 28, 1869 Father has been more comfortable today but unreasonable in some of his demands. Mrs. Foss came up the afternoon & helped me sew for him. I made a cushion for him. Seth left this morning. John & Delia were down in the evening. Eliza & I sang to father awhile. Retired about half past ten. Friday, October 29, 1869 The ground was white with snow this morning and it continued to

It snowed considerably today. Father was very delirious an hour in the night and a little while this forenoon. I went over after Mr. Flint to assist Frank in taking care of him. I walked up to church & heard Mr. Gurney preach from Ex. 14:15. I rode home with Mrs. Brown & she stopped here until past four. Father had a comfortable night and day. Aunt M., F. & C went to church p.m. Mr. Sampson & [blank] Monday, Nov 1, 1869 Quite a comfortable night father had and he has been able to talk considerably today though not as much as yesterday. Tuesday, Nov 2, 1869 Father had quite a comfortable night & has remained about the same through the day. We think he may live some time. Eliza left this morning for Portland & Boston. Uncle Mayo & Ellen S. called in the evening. Mr. Dexter & George S. are to watch. Frank & I went out to try & find a nurse for father but did not succeed. Augusta Shepherd was married today. Thursday, Nov 4, 1869 Father is about the same today. This p.m. he requested me to pray before him & mother and then to mutually bid farewell & seal it with a kiss. Friday, Nov 5, 1869 Father remains about the same. Aunt Mary & I sat up until twelve last night & then Frank got up. After tea I went down to Mrs. S. to get some milk. Saturday, Nov 6, 1869 Brainerd Smith & Frank watched last night & father was quite comfortable – but he changed a good deal during the day. Sunday, Nov 7, 1869 H. Davis & Frank sat up last night. Father seems more feeble this morning. A very little snow which turned to rain. I went to church a.m. and heard Mr. Gurney preach from Luke 24:26. I called into Mrs. Crocker’s on my way to church. After the afternoon service the sacrament was observed here by the family & Mr. Gurney & Mr. Mayo. Father was quite exhausted. At the close he asked us to sing one verse Nearer to Thee. Monday, Nov 8, 1869 A beautiful morning, but cloudy p.m. I sat up until two o’clock with Melln Prentiss. Father was very quiet and slept considerably. More feeble today than yesterday. I was busy nearly all day. Mrs. B, E. Mayo, Mrs. D, Mrs. L. called. I sent a letter to Mrs. G. I went over & got Ada L. to sing & play “Happy Land” and D_______[?]. Tuesday, Nov 9, 1869 Father had me read & pray during ______[?] with him. Father is nearly the same today as yesterday. By mistake no one came to watch & mother & Frank took turns. Very cold & windy to-day. I went out p.m. to Mrs. Brockway’s. Mr. Dinsmore’s saloon &c. I ordered a dozen of father’s pictures. Mr. Mayo came in in the evening. I wrote to Lizzie. Father wanted me

to sing Jesus I Know. I sang at his request. Wednesday, Nov 10, 1869 This far the Lord &c in the evening. Cold and windy. I sat up with Mr. Briggs until half past one and then called Frank. I didn’t finish ironing until after noon & then I sat with father until tea & in the evening from seven to eight. I retired about nine feeling half sick. Thursday, Nov 11, 1869 Mrs. Hall watched alone until two and then Frank got up. Father had a good deal of difficulty in raising today & I feared would choke to death. He said to me this p.m. “O where shall not be found.” I called to two or three places on errands this p.m. Mrs. P. & Ellen S. called to see me. I sat with father the most of the a.m. & a part of p.m. Friday, Nov 12, 1869 Mr. Burrill & Frank watched and father had to be moved several times. I was busy the most of the forenoon packing my trunk, putting my room in order &c. Mrs. Brown & Mrs. McKusick called. After tea mother & I went down to Mrs. B’s to see the wreath which she made for father. Father suffered a great deal from difficult breathing and I think can hardly live until morning. Saturday, Nov 13, 1869 A charming day. Left home about four in company with Miss Holme, Johnny & Harry to Danville Junction & the day passed quite quickly. I called at aunt H’s in V. a few moments and arrived at Scarboro about four & found all glad to see me & aunt S. rather better. Father coughed a good deal in the night but he was more comfortable when I left. George Sawyer watched. S. & I walked home at noon but Howard carried us back & came after us. I rec’d a letter from Frank & one from aunt Almira. In the evening I did an example for S. & sewed & read a little. Thursday, Nov 18, 1869 Very windy but quite pleasant. I arose at a little past six and helped Lillie some until past nine & then swept & arranged my room. I wrote to Frank & M. Hattie p.m. We played dominoes in the evening & then I looked over some lessons. Uncle Seth came in the nine o’cl’k train a.m. Friday, Nov 19, 1869 Mild and pleasant. On the evening H.L.S & I went up to Mr. Boothby’s to a sing & returned a little past nine. Bright moonlight & we had a nice ride. I rec’d two letters from Frank the last one written Tuesday. Father was then very low and could raise only with great difficulty. Aunt Mary had concluded to stay as long as father should live. Saturday, Nov 20, 1869 A severe wind & rain & the wind continued until afternoon when it cleared off finely. Mr. Mason came about two o’clock & stayed until half past eight. I made button holes in Susie’s cloak & dress. After Mr. M. left I wrote to Eliza. Uncle left for Augusta about four. (Father died at twenty min. before ten this evening). Also a letter from Seth & Mrs. Goodwin. I made measures for drawing maps, heard Georgie read & Susie recite. Wednesday, Nov 24, 1869 Some snow today which melted considerably p.m. One more new scholar today. I stopped after school to assist a scholar &c & got home about dark. Susie & I went to prayer meeting in the evening which was interesting. We sang together some. Monday, Nov 29, 1869 A fine day. I had one new scholar making just sixty on my list. In the evening I began to hear my Latin classes, after which I finished my letter to Seth &c. Retired about ten. Tuesday, Nov 30, 1869 A very rainy day. I stayed at noon. In the afternoon Mr. Mason visited the school and made quite lengthy remarks. In the evening I wrote to Ella L. to send in Seth’s letter. No mail today. Retired about half past nine. Wednesday, Dec 1, 1869 A severe wind the most of the day. I rec’d letters from Althea and cousin Hannah. In the evening I sang with L & S about an hour, read the papers &c and wrote to Althea. Thursday, Dec 2, 1869 Cold and cloudy. I sent a letter to Althea but the express did n’t go. I heard my Latin classes in the evening & after meeting they sang some pieces for Christmas. Friday, Dec 3, 1869 No storm yet. When I returned from school at night I found Mr. Mason here & he stayed until about eight. After tea Lillie & I went up after the mail but it did not come. We called at Mrs. Hights & Dr. Sewalls. We sang some on our return. I had one more new scholar. I heard Georgie read, studied &c until half past nine. I also wrote to mother. Tuesday, Dec 7, 1869 Howard carried us up to school in a wagon & we stayed at noon. H. came after me at night. I studied. I heard the Latin class in school today as they couldn’t recite last evening. I began this evening to hear Howard recite in Chemistry & Grammar. Wednesday, Dec 8, 1869 Pleasant & cold. H. carried S & I to school & on our way we stopped at the office & I got a letter from Frank & one from aunt Emeline at Waltham. S & I stayed at noon. Thursday, Dec 9, 1869 A beautiful day but cold in the morning & at night. S & I stayed at noon. I heard my Latin class in the evening & after that I heard Howard. Friday, Dec 10, 1869 It was so pleasant S & I came home at noon. After tea I heard Howard’s lesson & then called with Lillie & Susan at Mr. Mason’s & then went to Mr. Height to a sing. We had a pleasant time and came home about half past nine. Saturday, Dec 11, 1869 I put my room in order, ironed &c and wrote to aunt Emeline. After dinner I wrote to Seth & sewed a little. In the evening Lillie & I took turns in reading aloud in “Beyond the Mississippi” by Richardson. Aunt Susan went to Portland in the half past eight train & returned at six. No mail today. Sunday, Dec 12, 1869 Mr. Mason preached from Luke 18:1-8 a.m. 1 Cor 1:21 p.m. Very mild and a little rain at noon. Susie & I went to prayer meeting in the evening. It rained hard when we came home.

Monday, Dec 13, 1869 The rain turned to snow in the night but it cleared off in the forenoon. My class came down in the evening. Tuesday, Dec 14, 1869 A beautiful day. I received a letter from Eliza & one from mother containing one from Lizzie Greeley & E. In the evening Dr & Mrs. Sewall called & Mrs. Hight was here until nine. I have a sore eye and kept poultice on it through the evening & night. Wednesday, Dec 15, 1869 I scribbled a few lines to mother this morning & rec’d a letter from Seth to night. Mr. & Mrs. Hatch the former minister of this place came here to stay all night. Thursday, Dec 16, 1869 Pleasant. I got a letter from Eliza, mother & Lizzie Greeley. S & I stayed at noon. L & I sang a little before my Latin class came. The girls rehearsed their piece after singing. I heard Howard recite after nine o’clock. Friday, Dec 17, 1869 Some rain in the night & it was very slippery in the morning. I stayed at noon. It cleared off in the forenoon. In the evening I went to Eliza & Frank Quincy after hearing Georgie & Howard. Saturday, Dec 18, 1869 Howard took Lillie & I to Saco to do some shopping and we dined at aunt Rachel’s. We got home about four. I was very sleepy but I wrote to aunt Almira & Mr. Salisbury in the evening. Sunday, Dec 19, 1869 It rained hard in the night but cleared off before. Very windy all day. Mr. Mason preached from Acts 77:30. I did n’t go to church in the afternoon. Susie & I went in the evening. Monday, Dec 20, 1869 Pleasant. I stayed at noon and heard a Latin lesson & assisted Mary Ella M. in Arithmetic. I received letters

from Ellen J, M. Hattie, cousin Hannah & Frank. I wrote a few lines to Ellen J. to send in by aunt S. tomorrow. Tuesday, Dec 21, 1869 Pleasant. I stayed at noon. Aunt Susan went to Portland. Charles Snow came in in the evening with Howard & stayed until nine. I helped Lillie a little in making the fringe of her father’s scarf which she finished to-night. I began a letter to Seth. Wednesday, Dec 22, 1869 Snow in the night but a rain storm today. I read aloud nearly all of the evening. I finished Seth’s letter in the morning and sent it off. Thursday, Dec 23, 1869 Pleasant and not very cold. Very icy. I heard Georgie read in the morning as we expected mother this afternoon, but she did not come. Lillian, Susie & H. went to Saco this afternoon & they were at the church in the evening. I heard Georgie read & then read myself I the papers. Friday, Dec 24, 1869 Pleasant & a little colder. I stayed at noon & after school went into the church to see the trimmings & hear the pieces spoken &c. Uncle Seth came but mother did not. L. H. & S. were away all the evening to prepare pop corn for the tree. I sewed on some trimming. Saturday, Dec 25, 1869 A charming day. I was busy a part of the day fixing up a cap & wig for a Santa Claus which we did not have. We took an early tea and went up to the church a little past five. The exercises were very interesting & closed about nine. There were eleven hundred & fifty presents on the two trees. I had a bell from my scholars a book from uncle S, a bottle of perfumery & a work basket. Sunday, Dec 26, 1869 Very damp in the morning and quite rainy p.m. Lillie & I stayed at noon and had a nice time singing & I began to read “The Corner Houses or

Kindness wins” a S.S. book. Mr. Mason preached from Math 7:21-29 a.m. & 1st Peter 3:13 p.m. No meeting in the evening. Monday, Dec 27, 1869 Rainy. In the afternoon C Snow & Howard visited my school. H. went home at recess to get the wagon to take us home. I wrote to Frank & Althea in the evening – and also a few lines to Eliza to send in Lilla’s letter. Tuesday, Dec 28, 1869 Stilll rainy. I felt about sick today. H. carried us up & brought us back at night. We all retired about eight o’clock in the evening.

Wednesday, Dec 29, 1869 Quite pleasant but very muddy so we stayed at noon. Found Mr. Mason here on our return from school, who left about nine. Thursday, Dec 30, 1869 Pleasant. In the evening Charles Snow came down and brought our mail matter and I had a letter from cousin S. Augusta. I wrote to mother and began a letter to Mrs. Pitman. Georgie did n’t feel well & didn’t read. Friday, Dec 31, 1869 Georgie is quite nicely. A little colder & pleasant. Susie & I came

home at noon. Howard went over to Saco in the forenoon & brought over aunt Olive. Uncle Seth came in the nine o’cl’k train & he & aunt S. rode over to Gorham to the funeral of his only brother. They returned about six. After the others had retired excepting Lilla I finished my letter to Mrs. P. This closing evening of the year I feel that I have reason to express my gratitude to my Heavenly Father for his great goodness to me.
