USE OF LATTIX POST SELECTION CHARTS
Step 1 – Determine appropriate Wind Region
In Australia wind zones should be determined from Australian Standard AS/NZS 1170.2:2011 Structural
Design Actions – Wind actions. Figure 4 from the standard has been reproduced below for the
convenience of the reader. Post selection charts have been provided for wind regions A, B & C. Note, if
the sign site is installed in an exposed location, a selection chart for the next higher wind region should
be used.

Design Guide for Roadside Signs ‘’ March 2018.)
Step 2 – Determine Sign Area of proposed sign

Q-10506.00 Rev A Page | 2
For the proposed sign obtain the sign width (A) and height (B). To calculate the sign area multiply the
width by the height – i.e. A x B = sign area
Step 3 – Calculate the height to centre of pressure
The height to the centre of pressure of the sign is half the sign height plus the clearance from the
bottom of the sign to ground level – i.e H1 = H + B/2
Note that Lattix requires a minimum of 2m clearance so that a light vehicle can run underneath the sign
Step 4 – Select appropriate chart and determine post to use
Single-post selection charts:
If the sign width is less than 2.6m try the single-post selection chart first. For the single-post charts take
a vertical line from the sign area and a horizontal line for the height to centre of pressure to the point of
intersection. The next curve to the right of this point represents the smallest single Lattix post that can
be used.
Multiple-post selection charts:
For signs over 2.6m wide, use the multiple-post selection charts.
Take a vertical line from the area of the sign to intersect with the oblique line representing the height to
centre of sign. From there, take a horizontal line across to the right multi-post selection box to select
the number and size of Lattix posts that can be used. The most economic choice is to use the least
number of posts.
Example 1:
Proposed road sign in Brisbane, not in an exposed location, to be 3.0m wide and 2.2m high with a
ground clearance of 2.6m.
Step 1 – from AS/NZS1170.2 the wind region is B.
Step 2 – The sign area is 3.0 x 2.2 = 6.6m2
Step 3 – The height to centre of sign is H1 = 2.6 + 2.2/2 = 3.7m
Step 4 – Sign width is greater than 2.6m, therefore use multi-post selection chart for Region B (Sht 6)
Take a vertical line at sign area = 6.6m up to an intersection point just below the oblique line H1 = 3.9m.
Take horizontal line across to the box with number of posts. Result is two Lattix 4420 posts.

Example 2:
Proposed road sign is a 1.5m wide by 2.2m height located in Rockhampton, Queensland and not in an
exposed location. Clearance below sign is to be 2.1m.
Step 1 – Wind region from AS/NZS 1170.2 for Rockhampton is region C.
Step 2 – Sign area is 1.5 x 2.2 = 3.3m2
Step 3 – Height to centre of sign H1 = 2.1 + 2.2/2 = 3.2m
Step 4 –Sign width is less than 2.6m, therefore try single-post selection chart for Region C (Sht 3)
Take a vertical line from sign area = 3.3m2 to intersect with a horizontal line from H1 = 3.2m. Selection
line to the right is for a single Lattix 4425 post.
