“Let us thank all those who teach in Catholic Schools.Educating is an act of Love; it is like giving Life.”

THE LATIN PATRIARCHATE

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem (LPJ) was restored in 1847; its main goal is to promote the best interest of the local communities it serves in. Today, the Patriarchal Diocese oversees about 90,000 faithful in four countries, including the Galilee, The Palestinian Authority, Jordan and Cyprus, covering a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, religions and traditions. Serving all with special emphasis on the support and care of indigenous Holy Land Christians remains the enduring mission of the Mother Church, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

It is the LPJ goal that the family is the fundamental building block of the local community and of society at large. As a result, the Church takes a holistic approach in its work and assistance. While starting with the children and youth who are the youngest group in the society; LPJ builds outward to serve the immediate parents, the surrounding community and ultimately the society as a whole.

INTRODUCTION

Tla’ El Ali neighborhood is located in the northern area of Amman, capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The school of the Latin Patriarchate was founded in this neighborhood, in the year 1968 and used to include a kindergarten and a school from grade 1 to 4. In 2006 the education offer was extended until grade 9 and in 2015, the kindergarten was moved to a new location adjacent the school. So, nowadays the school offers from KG-1 to 9th grade and it counts 60 pre-school children and 278 students.

The building was renewed about 10 years ago and the spaces available for the students, like the yard and the restrooms, are in need of a rehabilitation and restoration, also according to the new regulation issued by the Ministry of Education.

BRIEF SUMMARY

1. Expansion of the yard

The yard of the school, to be in compliance with the new regulation of the Ministry of Education, need to be expanded to be suitable for the number of students attending the school. For this reason, the school was requested to promptly satisfy the new conditions established. The actual yard is 396 m2 and by modifying the existing upper level area it could reach the area of 537 m2 and be in compliance with the Ministry of Education’s regulations. The expansion consists first in the demolition of the

existing bathroom on the upper level of the yard, the demolition of the staircase and interior walls, and secondly in the reconstruction of new retaining walls and staircases and the leveling and paving of the yard.

2. Rehabilitation of existing bathrooms and building of new external bathrooms

The second part of the project consists in the construction of new external bathrooms to replace the one located at the upper level of the yard that will be demolished. The location for the new bathroom has already been identified, in a part of the school now used as storage.

Also the existing bathrooms in the basement floor of the school are in urgent need of rehabilitation. The new restrooms are designed to separate boys’ and girls’ toilets and to expand the actual ones, according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education.

BENEFICIARIES

The direct and ultimate beneficiaries of the project will be the staff members of the school including students, teachers, the school directors and the local community as a whole.
