Dear Friends,It is with great pleasure that the Embassies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Spain, and the special guests, Portugal and Uruguay, bring to New Zealand the 11th Latin American Film Festival. This year, the Festival has been extended to include a growing number of cities around the country with Auckland, New Plymouth, Wellington, Palmerston North, Tauranga and Dunedin all set to enjoy the delights that Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese cinema will offer. The 11th Latin American Film Festival is a window through which we have the opportunity to gain an insight into other countries and their cultures. This year the Embassies have carefully selected a wide variety of films, each in its own way a sensory experience serving to represent the country in which it was made. The main purpose of the 11th Latin American Film Festival is to show and share a part of our identity through these films, bringing Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese cultures into New Zealand cities, while also creating links within the local community. Year after year, we have received remarkable support from a number of organisations that recognise the importance of this event and we are extremely grateful to all of those involved. As the Festival now moves into its second decade, we wish to reiterate our sincere gratitude to all the sponsors and other supporters who have ensured that this remain a regular event on this country’s cultural calendar. Finally, we wish to convey our thanks to our respective Governments and of course to the talented filmmakers from Latin America, Spain and Portugal who have made their work available for all of us to enjoy.

Aballay was a bad tempered gaucho. But sometimes the image reflected

by a mirror makes a man reconsider his whole life. After killing a man, the

terrified look of the victim’s son raised Aballay’s consciousness about his

savagery. Years go by, Aballay makes a promise and keeps it: he doesn’t kill or steal again. He becomes a sort of saint to people’s eyes. But that kid’s

look doesn’t leave him. Aballay knows that the kid will look for him... And he

will find him.

“Estômago: A Gastronomic Story” Estômago

Some people eat, while others get eaten: such is life. Raimundo Nonato, our protagonist, finds an alternate path to face his challenges: he cooks. While working in the kitchens of a bar, an Italian restaurant and finally a prison, Nonato learns how to get by in a society driven by the acquisition of power. Estômago is an adult fable about power, sex and cooking. Literally delicious. Inspired by the short story “Presos pelo Estômago” (Caught by the Stomach) by Lusa Silvestre. Voted the best Brazilian feature movie of 2008 by the Brazilian Cinema Academy. Winner of 18 prizes, being 14 at international film festivals.

Year 2005

During an anti-globalisation protest, seven candidates are assembled for the final stage of the selection process for a single high-level position at

a multinational company. The tension becomes palpable when they realise they must compete

against one another in a ruthless new American HR test known as the Grönholm Method. Their

first challenge is to identify a corporate mole in their midst - and eject them. As the questioning

turns accusative, vicious and humiliating, no one knows who to trust, what their next challenge

will be, or how far they’ll have to go. Based on an acclaimed play by Jordi Galcerán, The Method is

an intelligent thriller about the suspicion, paranoia, and betrayal at the heart of corporate politics.
